ITunes 12 - Sort album with numbers in title by natural order

Hi All
Searched but cannot find a solution to this.
Now I've got iTunes 12, I noticed that when I added a new album titled "Triple J Like A Version 10", it sorts this album at the beginning of the sequential list of albums. i.e.:
Triple J Like A Version
Triple J Like A Version 10
Triple J Like A Version 2
Triple J Like A Version 3
etc
It should appear after Triple J Like A Version 9.
My other albums added on earlier versions of iTunes are fine. For example Triple J Hottest 100 Volume 10 comes after 9 & before 11 where it should be; Volume 20 comes after 19 & before 21.
Is there any way to change the sort order to sort numbers in their natural order?
Thanks
Craig

Pad out the sort values with leading zeros so the sort names become:
Triple J Like A Version 02
Triple J Like A Version 03
Triple J Like A Version 09
Triple J Like A Version 10

  • Problem Sorting on Artist Name with numbers in title

I just upgraded to iTunes 7.7 and when I sort by artist, all the artists with numbers in their name (3 doors down, 10,000 Maniacs) appear after the "Z's" at the very end of my library, I want them before the "A's" as the first block of songs in my library, can't firgure out how to do that, it was always that way in my previous iTune versions, but with the upgrade it changed by itself
Can anyone help, I am sure this should be easy as I never had to do anything before to get this sorting behavior

This was changed in version 7.3.

  • ITunes Sorting Issue - By numbers? (not "track numbers")

How can I get iTunes to sort using the defaulted numbers in List View. The header cannot be clicked in List View, but can in Grid View. Is there any way it can be clicked or tricked into sorting using them? It's very handy. Thanks.

If you click on any column header, it will sort the entire library in numerical or alphabetical order based on the listing of whatever column header has been clicked on.
So if you click on "Name", you will get:
    2 Minutes To Midnight - Iron Maiden - 9 of 16
    8 Mile Road - Grant Lee Buffalo - 9 of 14
    A Bad Night - Cat Stevens - 19 of 19
    Badlands - Bruce Springsteen - 1 of 10
    Classico - Tenacious D - 2 of 15
    etc.
If you click on "Artist" then the exact same Library will be re-ordered as:
    Badlands - Bruce Springsteen - 1 of 10
    A Bad Night - Cat Stevens - 19 of 19
    8 Mile Road - Grant Lee Buffalo - 9 of 14
    2 Minutes To Midnight - Iron Maiden - 9 of 16
    Classico - Tenacious D - 2 of 15
    etc.
By default, iTunes should be recognising the "Artist" column as the main sorting definer, with album track numbers being the secondary sorting consideration within artists.
If for some reason your sorting order has fallen foul of this, then to get it back on track, firstclick on the "Track #" header, to sort your songs by track number: 1 of 10, 2 of 10, 3 of 10, etc. and then click on "Artist".
This should get it back to how you want it.
If this [still] isn't working for you, then you need to perhaps check that your songs are tagged correctly. Make sure that all tracks from the same album all have the track numbers filled in, in both the first and second fields in the "Track Number" spaces, ie: X of X.

  • ITunes sorting albums in grid view

In the grid view, my library lists albums multiple times if there are various artists on the same album. I have tried to reset my view options (Sort Albums, By Title) but cannot "uncheck" the By Artist option. I am very irritated and at my wits end! Does anyone have a solution for this?

  • Photos with numbers and titles.

I have transferred folders of photos from my PC to my iPad and found that the order of the images the Album has changed despite the fact that they were numbered in the original file folder.   Also on iPad Albums they loose any titles.
What I would really like in a photo App is one that maintains the order of the images whether being viewed as a 'SlideShow' or just viewed one at a time. In addition, when the photos are being displayed in full screen I would like to be able, by the touch of a finger, be able to see the title of the photo overlaid at the bottom of the screen, and equally as simply, removed from the screen when read.
    My questions are
Will iPhoto do this for me?  I don't really need all the image processing that iPhoto offers because I do all that work on my PC before downloading images to my iPad.
Does anyone know of an App. that does?

  • ITunes sort 'Album by artist/year' problems

I've been having problems sorting _some_ albums. I'll give you a specific example:
I rip Simon and Garfunkel's 'The Concert in Central Park' which has 19 tracks. I want them to play in continuous mode, and in order.
I show track number in the columns, make sure all the tracks are of the same album and artist and I don't specify and sort options.
Now I click on the column header 'Album by Artist/Year' and I see that track 16 is first followed by 18, 19 then 1,2,3, etc.
I'm not sure why 16,18 and 19 are out of order, but they are and I don't know what other field it is using to apply this sort order since I've turned off the sort fields. I should say that I think the sort fields are turned off since I selected all tracks, hit command-I and made sure that the artist and album are the same, then went over to the sorting tab and selected each checkbox and made sure that the field was blank. Clicked on OK, then went into each track one at a time and verified that the general info and sort info were as I specified.
If I change the sort column to be just 'Album' then it sorts correctly - I think that the year is messed up, so I add the year column to the display and see that it is 1982. I click on the year and the sort is just fine. I set it back to 'Album by Artist/Year' and the same bizzare sort shows up. The same mis-sort shows with 'Album by Artist' so I do a check on the artist name (even looking for leading or trailing spaces - nothing).
I could probably delete the album and re-rip it, but I would rather find out why the sort is messed up so I can correct this problem if/when it shows up again. I'm aware that I have a few other albums with similar problems.
    Thanks,
    -Mark

    Reply to my own question.
In the sidebar a similar question was asked (if I could learn how to post the right question in the first place I probably would have found it).
I reset the disc number then the tracks showed up in the correct sort order. I'm pretty sure that the tracks had disc number 1 of 1 before, now they just have _ of _  (blank of blank).

  • Sort artists with numbers as their names first

Not to long ago, iTunes used to sort artists that had numbers in their names (311, 2pac, 50 cent)
first on the list, which i loved because numbers should always come before letters, but in the recent updates with itunes, numbers are now last after the Z's
Can someone give me a solution for this? a registry key or something maybe?

I did a litle cheat. I have some artists that I WANT to list at the top and before I did the
    1. [artist name]
    2. [artist2 name]
But since they decided to list these at the bottom (stupid decision), I mass updated the info on each artist to start with a.1, a.2, a.3, etc. This now lists the artists at the top in the order I want them in. A very nice easy workaround. No telling what Apple will do down the road, it's obvious they think #'s should be after letters. Contrarian company, I swear.

  • How do you keep 2 albums with the same title in separate folders

    Hi There,
I have 4 albums that will not go into a seperate playlist folder.
2 of them are title "ultimate collection"
the other 2 are titled "super hits". (obviously they are greatest hits cds)
All 4 albums are from different artist. I have read some other forums and what there saying is just change the title. Thats all fine and stuff but surely there is another option that i am unable to find.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kryten

I had the same problem with ac collection album, what you do is change the artist name. Im pretty sure it will go different folders.

  • Sorting albums with 10 discs or greater

When I upload an album that has more than 10 discs, the 10th disc always sorts between the first disc and the second. I cannot seem to make it sort in the correct numerical order, after the 9th disc. Who knows how to sort discs 10 and greater in the correct numerical order?

Maybe it would sort correctly if you put a zero in front of the single digit numbered disks? 01,02, etc. I actually have had the same kind of problems in Quick Books at work, and I think this should work.

  • ITunes sorting album issue

    Hey guys,
I had an android so when it came to copying music I just drag and dropped my mp3 folder and all was sweet. But if I want my album to look neat I have to go into every single folder and id3 tag them all, is there any way around this and just resort to file path as its structure?
I've included a pic  to illustrate what I'm trying to say, I don't just want to have to do that process every fricken folder I have it is a huge pain in the butt
Whats even stranger is I have to change Album AND Album Artist in order for them to be grouped together as one album.

Generally setting a common Album title and Album Artist will fix things.
For deeper problems see Grouping tracks into albums.
You may find it easier to use the old version of Get Info which you can get to by holding down alt/option as you right-click > Get Info.

  • Sort Albums - within albums - by title

    Hi there.
When I import a compilation into iTunes, one album with different artists, I get an image for every track instead of just one image for the album. It's irritating as I like to keep my library tidy and have just one album image per album.
When in grid view, I right click on "album" and have the option of sorting albums, but the "within album" section is greyed out with the default "by artist" ticked. How do I access this menu in order to tick "by title"?
Or is there another way of compiling all the different artists and tracks under one single album?

Fantastic! Thanks for that, and just to help you out,VWJettaIpod, here is the thing to do:
select all your tracks that should come under one album only, get info, in the "multiple information" box, choose "options", tick "part of a compilation" and choose "yes", that's it!
    Thanks again tt2.

  • Sorting Albums by Year

When sorting albums by year, albums with the oldest title go first. That's ridiculous because an album never could have been released before the latest title has been released. Sorting albums by the latest title track would make more sense...

I think the distinction is about which "year" is used to sort compilations/anthologies when different tracks have different dates. I suspect iTunes uses the year of the first track of the album rather than the latest value across all tracks which might make better sense. iTunes supports only the single year value rather than extended year & time (date) for the original recording & the release in question. Including these would enable iTunes to sort correctly when an artist releases more than one album in the same year.

  • When I rip a CD to iTunes. All goes well until I click on All Albums. If there are other artists named with the Title Artist they are shown as different albums so I end up with 16 albums containing 1 track instead of 1 Album with 16 tracks. Can I fix this

When I rip a CD to iTunes all goes well until I click on All Albums. If there are other artists named as well as the Title Artist, I end up with what appears as 16
Albums with 1 track instead of 1 Album with 16 tracks. Can I fix this ?

Had a similar problem with two tracks from a cd being segregated in a separate list, but with the same album title and artwork as the other 19 tracks. I found that by double clicking the artist field next to the album icon you can then edit that info.  In your case it sounds as if you might want to erase the artist info altogether. Once you have done that, all the tracks magically group together, as they should have done in the first place. Oh there might be a dialog box first, asking if you really want to do this.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help with iTunes/iOS Album Sort

We all know the Music.app since iOS 7 (for most of us) as been a disaster. Due to the expanded view of the albums for artist, it's a PITA for people whom have artist with even 3 or 4 plus albums. For me, I love E-40 and have 16 of his albums.
My concern is the organization of the albums he's released since 2012, on my iPhone (top to bottom in the music app) it's organized like this (and it drive's me crazy). I have included the release date of the albums but it's not actually in the album title, it's just for reference.

Here is a horizontal screenshot how how it looks on my phone. Any help on how to correct this would be very much appreciated. I know I have to change some info in the SORT ALBUM column, but I don't know what to use to sort it properly.

So I noticed that when I go to the ALBUMS tab in the music.app its organized properly with NO changes what-so-ever.
But when I use the GENRES tab or ARTIST tab it's organizing by Year then Title  in reverse chronological order. I have no clue how to get the albums to appear in this order while in the GENRES tab or ARTIST tab:

  • Bug in sort of numeric values in ( title and album ) string.

The Bug in the sort-function of the iPod results in mixed up track list.
An album with more then 9 tracks will be sorted in the wrong way, when only title or filename or album field is just to give a track a number. The play order is 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 2, 3 , 4 , 5, 6.... instead of the correct order 1,2,3,4,5,6...10,11, 12...
For example: After playing the track named "The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 1 - Yellow Submarine" the ipod will play "The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 10 - Baby, You´re A Rich Man" instead of "The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 2 - Hey Bulldog."
The programmer have to search the string for numbers and join all numeric values to a single number.
Example: Sample data :abc123. is "a" a number? no. is "b" a number no. is "c" a number no. is "1" a number? yes. store. is "2" a number? yes. join to "1". (now we have "12"). is "3" a number? yes. join to "12". (Now we have "123") -> EOL
Is "123" largen than "99"? yes! is "123" larger than 124. no!
Thats it. In perl you need 1 line of sourcecode, in c and c++ this can be done in 10 lines. In java (there a objects for this type of sort).
And every user will be happy and nobody has to do the 01, 02, 03 workaround or reimport their audiobooks.
Alternativly Apple should thing about storing the original filename in the ID3 tag or itunes database. This would make sorting the files without id3 tags (believe me or not, there are many people using mp3 for 10 years and have no id3 tags in there mp3-library) in itunes possible. (there is a god free tagger for mac os but no for windows.)
A company like Apple should have the ability to correct the error / bug in the iPod-firmware (have the same issue in classic and iphone) or itunes-softwar.
This is a wellknown and very common error done by newbie programmers or people who have not read the documentation of the software-libraries.

I still have an H140 in the cupboard. As I recall that needs leading zeros on filenames to sort properly. Since both WMP & iTunes include leading zeros it was never really an issue. THE Rename should be able to extract the track numbers from part of the filename and is also able to generate counters, along with the usual functions of setting tag fields from part of the file and/or folder name. Unfortuanetly THE Rename is still on the complicated side - I suspect there would be no easy way to lump together the variety of options that it has while keeping it very simple.
Once you've used an external program to adjust the tags you can make iTunes re-read them just by selecting the group of files in question, using CRTL-I to "Get Info." and then clicking OK +without making any changes+. iTunes will recheck it's database against any values in the tag and update as required. Given the lack of existing tags I would imagine that you don't let iTunes reorganise your music at the moment and would suggest you keep things that way at least until you are sure that all the tags have been correctly applied and you have a suitable backup. I stick to a Artist/Album/## Track structure which I don't let iTunes manage so that I can always recover details from the filesnames if I should ever accidentally edit more tracks than I intend.
