ITunes 12 - sorting unplayed podcasts recent/oldest

Hi All,
I'm liking the look and feel of iTunes 12, but I am having one annoying issue.  My list of unplayed podcasts is now listed in alphabetical order as opposed to the chronological order I had in iTunes 11 that I had and wanted.
I right-clicked on "Unplayed Episodes" in the side-bar and selected "Podcast Settings" but it doesn't seem to do anything.
So basically, it seems that it will be one of four things:
1. I am missing something simple.
2. There is a bug which means the Podcast Settings window won't appear.
3. My version of iTunes hasn't downloaded correcty
4. There is no way to change it.
Has anyone else figured this one out?
Thanks.

  • ITunes removing unplayed podcasts...

Before I update iTunes from 6 to 7, I could set my podcasts to be removed after I listened to them. It seems that with iTunes 7 as soon as I play my podcasts, and sync my iPod they are removed from the Podcast directory. Is this the way iTunes behaves now? As soon as I play a podcast it is gone, whether I have completed listening to it or not.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
iTunes now seems to be marking podcasts as played as soon as you listen to them at all. Thus, the podcast is played and is deleted based on the preferences you have set.
You could change the preferences in iTunes for iTunes and the iPod to something else (keep the last (or last two) episodes, for example) since you don't listen to them all at once. Also, not syncing the iPod until you are done could work, but isn't convenient (and defeats the purpose of new podcasts, in a way).
I would also send feedback to Apple...

  • Can I sort my Podcasts on my IPOD, NANO by episode from oldest to newest and if so how?

I have an Apple, IPOD, NANO, purchased in 2009:
Problem: I would like to have a Podcast Playlist sort podcast episodes from oldest to newest broadcast date; I have done so on my P.C. based ITunes player and have synced same to my IPOD NANO; however, when I do so the podcasts on my IPOD NANO are not sorted from oldest to newest; rather, from newest to oldest.
Question Summary: Can I sort my Podcasts on my IPOD, NANO by episode from oldest to newest and if so how?
    Thanks / Ed

You can try changing the the password for your iCloud account that may work.
Otherwise you will have to get him to sign out of Messages by go to Settings>Messages>Send and receive and tap your Apple ID and then tap signout.

  • How do you remove unplayed podcasts in iTunes 11.1

How do you removed unplayed podcasts from iTunes 11.1?  The new version lists all of the available podcasts, including those that have already been played.  As a result it is necessary to scroll through very long lists of podcasts to see what is available on the next podcast.

What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization.  With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options.  If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast.  I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why?  How is this making it a better program?  I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was).  But to not give users the option to delete that list?  It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating.  I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature.  It smacks of rank incompetence.
What improvement were they trying to make here anyway?  There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions.  Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
And reverting to a previous version is no solution.  I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.

  • All Unplayed Podcasts - Not Syncing

Seems like there is a problem with syncing and Podcasts. iTunes is reporting 167 unplayed podcasts but the iPhone was only syncing 60 of those. I updated to the new iTunes today and that helped (iphone now sync's 123 unplayed podcasts) a little but I am still not getting all of the podcasts.
I've got the 16GB iPhone with 10GB of free space so space shouldn't be a problem.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Any fixes?

I sort of had the same problem. I usually transfer podcasts manually to my Touch. Recently, (not sure if it was before or after updating iTunes) I couldn't transfer podcasts at all. I tried manually and with sync. The only thing that would happen was about a one second long "syncing" message on the Touch's screen. After syncing, all of my podcasts were gone. The Podcast section was totally empty.
Two days ago I found out that my podcasts were actually in the Touch. They showed up in the browsing window of the Touch. The Touch was treating the podcasts like a music genre. To make the podcasts available to play (since they were actually on the Touch) I made a playlist of the podcasts. They now show up on the playlist where I can play them. Apple certainly needs to look at the newest iTunes and fix this podcast problem. It is an annoying fix.
To see if your podcasts are on your phone or not use the browse button on iTunes while your iPhone is highlighted on the directory on the left side of the screen. If your podcasts are there you can make a playlist in iTunes and set your podcasts in there. The will then transfer over.

  • Can I adjust the sorting of Podcast as displayed on the IPOD itself

Itunes by default sorts my podcast with the newest podcast at the top.
If I want to redisplay the sorting within iTunes, I just click on the release date column and they re-sort with the oldest at the top. This doesn't change the way they sort in the ipod window. The ipod still displays the newest at the top.
I'm just learning about the sort order field in itunes - info - sorting but I don't see how this can set up the change of date option as a permanent change to sort by date descending. Any advice or am I just trying to mess with my ipod too much.
    Thanks,
    Nyimbo

Don't worry about messing with your ipod too much. It is probably the best way to learn about it.
So far the best way I have found is to create a playlist, I usually use the same name as the podcast, sort the podcast by the release date, select all of them and add to the playlist. Then just play the podcast from the playlist.
Someday Apple may wake up and realize people, their customers, would like to install podcasts onto their iPods in the same order they are in iTunes.

  • Unplayed podcasts not marked with dot at top level list

    Hello,
Since I recently upgraded to iTunes 11.2, I've been having all kinds of trouble with podcasts.  Here's the most recent headache.
Today, my "Podcasts" item in the side menu on the left says there are 6 unplayed episodes.  When I click on "Podcasts", there are only 4 podcasts marked with the blue dot indicating that they are unplayed.  Where are the two additional unplayed podcasts?  It turns out that there are two podcasts that have unplayed episodes, but they're not marked as unplayed in the list of podcasts.  If I click on the arrow to the left of the podcast name to expand the list, I can see the unplayed episodes there, marked with a blue dot.
So, for two (and only two) podcasts, unplayed episodes are marked with an unplayed blue dot next to the individual episodes, but the top-level listing for that podcast in my list of podcasts doesn't show the unplayed blue dot.  There are two issues with this.  1) These "hidden" unplayed episodes don't sync to my iPod (i.e. only 4 podcast episodes went to my iPod this morning, even though I have 6 unplayed episodes), and 2) I can't tell which podcasts have unplayed episodes without expanding all of the listings for my podcasts, which is obnoxious.
I previously solved this problem by unsubscribing from the offending podcasts and resubscribing.  However, the problem is back now.  I'd really prefer not to have to delete and resubscribe every week.
Are there any other better podcast handlers out there than iTunes?  I'm getting so tired of the slow decent into the abyss with this bloated, dysfunctional piece of software.  Every time a new release comes out, something breaks or some feature I use is taken away, replaced with some iOS-centric Apple-store-linked "BUY NOW" button.  Ugghh.  I just want to play my nerdy NPR podcasts in peace, Apple.
    Thanks!
    Adrian

Did you ever figure this out? I just realized I posted a similar question. 9 months later and no Apple staff have answered this question nor have they fixed this (if it is a bug)? Not particularly impressive.

  • Older unplayed podcasts don't sync

On several podcasts to which I subscribe, I have older (non-current) unheard episodes which I am unable to sync to my iPod. iTunes is set to sync "all unplayed" episodes, but it only seems to sync NEW unplayed episodes. For example, in one podcast I have listened to the five most recent episodes, but not to the sixth. As I continue to download new episodes they will sync, but these older unplayed episodes will not.
I have verified that I am using the most current version of iTunes and the most current iPod software. I also tried restoring my iPod, but the problem persists. Based on comments here, I have double checked to see if the podcasts are being added into a playlist, or if I can find them under Genre -> Podcasts on the iPod, but they aren't there.
iPod Nano 1GB   Windows XP   iPod and iTunes software are current

I'm having the same trouble that you're having. I discovered my favorite podcasts long after they were created, and I would like to catch up.
iTunes currently syncs "most recent", "most recent unplayed", and "most recent new." I would love for a fourth option: "Least Recent Unplayed." Only three at a time, of course, because I have a iPod Nano.
Manual syncing is fine and all, but it's not automatic.

  • HT3281 How can I sort the podcasts I download so that the smaller ones download first

    Hi All
A cool feature that I am looking for is a way to sort the podcasts that I downlod by size, so that I can download the smaller ones first and fast and then keep downloading untill all pocasts are downloaed.
So for example: I subscribe to a podcast from Scientific American called 60-second science. Now this is a minute or so long commentary about some interesting scientific topic. Typically the podcast is in the range of 1.5 to 2.0 MBs. It downloads in seconds, and I also subscribe to Audio podcasts from London School of Economics which typically are 1.5 hours and the file is in the 30 to 35 MB range and some times even larger.
So when I make the list of podcasts to downlad, I would like to be able to clik on the headers of the coumns in iTunes and have the entries isted just kike Windows Exploer wuld sort, and then click download and the podcasts will download fast and then slow down as the file size gets larger.
Is this feature in today's iTunes 10??? Or could it be introduced in future versions?
    Thanks
    Wassim

I think you can use download manager, just try to find it in google and install it. Most of download manager has waiting list or queues.

  • Sorting my Podcasts/Smart Playlist

I used to be able to sort my podcasts in a smart playlist, from my highest rating to lowest rating.
I must have done something, but now my podcasts are no longer in the same rated order after syncing to my iPhone.
I know I am doing something wrong cuz I did this before, but cannot figure it out.
    Any help would be appreciated

Smart playlist sorted on Release date still out of order on my touch. How can it not make sense to the Apple people that a serial podcast should be played in order of release date. And multiple related podcasts selected in the same smart playlist should all be played in temporal order. Even filtering on smart lists cannot be based on the release date. IE I want all of the podcasts "RELEASED" in 2008 in a list and I want to play them in temporal order. It is such a no brainer that I cannot believe that I am writing this again for the FOURTH itunes release!! Smart lists?? More like moron lists!!
Seriously regretting recommending apple to friends. WIth this much incompetence they are likely to come out with the latest and greatest new tablet device and forget to put a camera in it.

  • Can't see shared iTunes U or Podcasts from Mac on iPhone or iPad

Since update to iOS6, I don't see my shared iTunes U and Podcasts from my Mac on my iPhone or iPad.
What can be the reason and is there a solution?
    Thanks.

OK, I think I solved this issue by a workaround -
Uninstall the Podcasts and the iTunes U apps, restart the iOS device and then connect to the shared iTunes library from the Videos app on the iOS device.
BTW, I also noticed that the TV shows are not sorted anymore since the upgrade (looks like a bug to me).

  • Sorting library podcasts by song rating

I can sort my Library/Music easily by rating but I can not sort Library/Podcasts by rating. Songs that I do not like I mark with a rating of one star and I desire to sort by rating and delete all with a rating of one star.  Can this be done? Is there an alternative way to do what I desire?  I'm using latest version of iTunes.

You could create a smart playlist that contains all your podcasts and then sort that by rating.
    Hope this helps.

  • Feature Suggestion - Playing Unplayed Podcasts

With several different Podcast subscriptions and multiple episodes per, it would definitely be nice to click the play button on the "Podcasts" menu option and play all unplayed Podcasts. I find I have to use a smart playlist for unplayed Podcasts to have sort of the same effect; however, the smart playlist is not "smart" update until I resync my iPod.

Well, I've got a smartplaylist that is quite long, but is quite useful . . . I have a playlist that EXCLUDES all other playlists, thus only listing the songs that 'aren't anywhere'.
    Make sense?
It works really great. The only troublesome thing is if you create a new playlist, you have to remember to add it to the list...
    Good luck, and have fun!

  • ITunes combined two podcast subscription lists

We have always  maintained two machines (one mac one pc) with iTunes keeping separate podcast subscriptions but  linked libraries for music.  11.1 decided to download all subscribed podcasts on both machines to both machines.  Our tastes diverge on podcasts so keeping them separate is a good idea.
I'm guessing we are stuck with this but what is the best strategy to deal with separating the two lists?  The best option I have so far would be
his and hers playlists If the my stations list actually functions as a play list....  On the up side I can now just put a big harddrive in a NAS on the network and be done with duelling libraries.

Well, I hear your response, and it confirms what I understand about the issue. I'm trying to understand how it's "Not allowed." Usually Not Allowed would preface a rule to prevent some sort of disorder. However it seems that moving something as simple as a url subscription from the ipod to an itunes program would be a simple matter and would not require any code of ethics.
Now it may be that it has yet to be part of the itunes program, but it certainly should be, or perhaps there is some sort of work-around.
You see, on my computer with the latest subscriptions, iTunes does not properly sync the podcasts for which I have subscriptions, but just 'renews' al;l the podcasts I have already listened to, and my older subscriptions iTunes seems to function a little better for whatever reason.
