ITunes 12 starts spontaneously

OS 10.10.2, iMac with 4 GB RAM
iTunes is spontaneously starting up and beginning to play songs after a user logs in and starts doing something else.  The time after log-in for iTunes to start seems to vary from a couple of minutes to a half-hour.
This has happened for iTunes 12.1 and iTunes 12.  I haven't observed this happening in my admin account.
Anyone know a reason for this and a way to stop this?

Figured my issue out - it was Tune Instructor causing the issues. Somehow when I updated iTunes, Tune Instructor got reset to open at login and open iTunes store page. Reset the prefs and all is fine.

  • ITunes 10.4.1  on Osx 10.6.8  starting spontaneously

For the last week or so, iTunes has been spontaneously starting.
I do NOT have any iTunes plugins, and don't have an CD's in the machine or any other devices connected to the iMac, I don't even have my iPod plugged into the iMac.
I see that this is a frequently reported problem, but have not found any solution.  Why won't Apple address this problem or provide any guidance about what's causing it or how it might be fixed or prevented.
My only guess is that some web-site I've gone to is trying to play a sound file, and for some reason iTunes thinks that it should startup to play the sound.  But I haven't been able to identify any web-site thats causing the problem, the only web sites that I usually have open when this happens are facebook and yahoo.
How do I determine which file types iTunes will try to open?

Did you accidentally turn that feature off in iTunes? Connect your iPad to your Mac and launch iTunes on your own. Select the iPad on the left side under the devices heading. Click on the Summary tab at the top of the iTunes Window on the right - actually that's the default so you should already be in that window. Make sure that you have a checkmark in the box next to Open iTunes when this iPad is connected.
If that feature is greyed out - go to the iTunes menu at the top - iTunes>Preferences>Devices and see if you checked - prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing atuomatically. If you uncheck that - the Open iTunes option should be available now for you to select. But now you will sync automatically again.

  • ITunes stops/starts songs every time certain keys are pressed, whether application is open/active or not.

iTunes stops/starts songs whenever ENTER,"/" [num pad] or DELETE is pressed, whether the application is open/active or not.  Updated to most recent version a few days ago, though this began seemingly spontaneously today, possibly tied to an iPad sync although I really have no idea how it could have started.

  • Itunes wont start and i get no error messages

i just downloaded itunes 7.3 and itunes wont start any ideas how to fix?

Okay. I'm still wondering about your firewall. A "persistent" iTunes.exe in your processes is most consistent with a firewall blocking iTunes, iTunesHelper and/or QuickTime from accessing the Internet. (Norton Internet Security 2005 is by far the worst offender in this regard, but it can be produced both other firewalls too.)
Head into the Firewalls settings and make sure that iTunes, iTunesHelper, and QuickTime are all being allowed full access to the internet.
If iTunes still doesn't launch after making sure the firewall is correctly adjusted, reboot the PC and try the suggestion from the following document. (It's a much rarer issue, but it can also produce that persistent iTunes.exe symptom in conjunction with an error-message-free iTunes launch failure.)

  • ITunes wont start up

Hi, i had a look on this answer to a topic : itunes wont start :
+The QuickTime problem is most likely causing the iTunes launch problem. So let's try swapping out your QuickTime again taking a few additional explicit precautions.+
    +Head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.+
+Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.+
+1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).+
+2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.+
    +3. Open Program Files.+
+4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.+
    +5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.+
+6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)+
    +7. Restart your computer.+
+Next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.+
+Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.+
+Go into Add/Remove and select itunes. Click "Change" and then click "Repair".+
but when it comes to install/uninstall an error comes out : An error ocured while installation
and i cant get rid of it. Pls help. Any ideas? Thx. J

but when it comes to install/uninstall an error comes out : An error ocured while installation
Let's try getting the program uninstalled by other means then.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Now run the utility (“Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up”), select any QuickTime entries in the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, and then click “Remove”.
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)
    7. Restart your computer
Does the repair install go through properly now? Or do you get another error message when you try the repair install?

I have installed iTunes on my Windows computer (XP pro sp2 x32) but not in any way iTunes will start when new iPad 4 is usb connected with computer
    what can be wrong?

I recommend you do as LexSchellings and I are telling you to do. If you have uninstalled iTunes and the reinstalled it from Apple's website and it still does not work, you will have to contact the Apple Technical Support section for them to guide you through steps to try and get it working.

  • Itunes wont start, computer says to download latest version 7.5

iTunes wont start, solution computer gives it to download latest version 7.5. nut when i download it and install 7.5 on my computer, which i have done several times, it doesn't work and says i should download the latest update.....which i already have! is it Vista related, or is relating to version 7.5?....please help me!!

I'll post the same thing I posted in another thread; it might help you. Reinstall itunes again according to my post. Some of the information is irrelevant to your problem, but hey, i'm kinda feeling lazy. You'll get the idea. Here it is.....
"this is just a suggestion. If you reinstall itunes again, make sure you follow the directions in the support section of this site for uninstalling itunes and quicktime. Another thing they don't say in that article that I did when i had to uninstall itunes was to do a search. You know, pressing the start button and then "Search". Make sure when you do, click the search "All files and folders". Then set it to look in "Local Hard Drives (C:)" and type in the "all or part of the file name" itunes. After the search is done you should have a bunch of different itunes components in the results. Btw do the same for quicktime as a search. Make sure to DELETE every itunes and quicktime file there. If some of your music files happened to come up in the search use commone sense. Get rid of every component so itunes and quicktime is completely erased from the system. Make sure that you do this after you've restarted your computer once (according to the uninstallation article). Then just empty your recycle bin, reboot your computer, and finally reinstall itunes. Hopefully that will work to at least get rid of that APP error. Good luck and ask me anything you have some questions!!"
    Hope that works!

I have multiple (3) user accounts on a windows (Vista) computer. When I start iTunes from one account iTunes wants to also start up on each of the active windows accounts and continues to attempt to start iTunes after some time period (90 seconds?).
I get a error screen on the attempts for the User that should not be starting iTunes that reads:
You cannot open the application "iTunes" because another user has it open.
Ask the other user to quit the application, then try again.
I want iTunes to run within only one account. How do I stop iTunes from starting up in the other active accounts?

Connect iPhone - iTunes will launch
select iPhone in iTunes' left column
in iTunes' main window untick "Automatically sync ..."

Ipod touch not being recognized by itunes (but is registering as an external drive by the computer itself) have updated and reinstalled itunes, stopped/started apple mobile device and removed any mobile programs associated with my non apple cellphone. This seems to have started happening after the last Itunes update I did as I was able to put music on my ipod touch a month or so ago. Is there some way to go back to an older version of itunes? I really have no idea what else to do since I followed every step on the trouble shooting page for windows 8.

I had this problem too and my roommate solved it!
    Go to 'Settings'
    'Music'
Scroll to the bottom and enter your password to log onto your home sharing
Then connect to iTunes and sync!

At present I have no power to the Gen 7, so need to get some power to it I think.  I pressed the buttons as you suggested, but nothing is showing up at this point.  Thank you for your response as the more I can rule out before  I take it back the better I think.

Is there a way to prevent iTunes from starting up when connecting an iPad to my Macbook?  We use Apple Configurator and would love to be able to set up the MacBook to open Apple Configurator when we  plug in an iPad.

When you connect the device open iTunes and select it from the sidebar. Click on the Summary tab in the main window. Uncheck the option to automatically connect to iTunes. You will find it in the collection of options near the lower part of the window.

See this knowledge base article. Also, you might want to update to 10.6.8 (don't know that that will fix your problem, but it's the latest version of Snow Leopard).
