Itunes 12 won't add video file

I've been using iTunes as my primary video player/manager for years now (and obviously to sync files into my iPhone/iPad).
Today for my surprise after going to File>Add to Library... to add another set of video files, NOTHING happened.
The videos are always added to the Home Videos section so I can re-arrange them to Movies/TVShows/Music Videos, etc. but this time they are NOT showing up there.
Strangely enough, the files do get copied to the Home Videos folder, within iTunes Media (I let iTunes auto organize folders/files), but yet they do not show up anywhere in the library.
It's important to inform that:
As I said, yes I checked into the Home Videos section and it's not there.
Yes, I tried adding while running iTunes under safe mode - no glory.
Yes, I restarted the computer and did it again - nothing.
Yes, I looked into the recent added list, both under Movies and Music, and they are not there.
Yes, the files do have the right codec/format, as they are .mp4, they all run on Quicktime, and I compare the codec format against other video files that are already in the library and they share the exact same features.
I'm currently running iTunes 12.1.0.50, iOS Yosemite 10.10.2, on a MacBook, and the whole library is running out of a 4TB external HDD (WD My Book).
HELP PLEASE, starting to fret here as I exhausted all troubleshooting options that I know!
Thanks in advance...

Nevermind. When I added another video file the ones that were not showing up magically appeared together with the one I just added.
Go figure...
I guess it could've been some sort of corrupt issue with the iTunes Library.itl file...
Now I'm golden

  • ITunes won't add large files to the library

I use software to convert my personal DVDs into Apple TV format via H.264 decoder for 720p resolution. The resulting files are typically larger than 3GB for a 2 hour movie. Now iTunes won't add them to my library so I can't sync them or stream them to my Apple TV.
Any advice? Is there a setting in iTunes that I overlooked?
I have tried the mpg4 conversion setting for 480 resolution and those files will load into iTunes and stream to Apple TV, but they are grainy and a horrible quality. So for those saying I don't need to use the H.264, I am picky and want a high quality resolution.
Thanks for any advice and help.

It is possible that there is something else wrong with my files. Several mp4 files worked fine prior to getting a new iMac and transferring the files over (using ext HDDs, not the migration wizard). Quicktime won't even open the files in question. It states that they are not movie files.
Sounds odd, they may be corrupted.
Try enusring the file extensions are either .mp4 or .m4v (or .mov perhaps).
3GB+ for a file intended for AppleTv 2 hours long sounds excessive and may exceed AppleTv playback specs but it shouldn'tbother quicktime. If the files don't open in QT they may well be corupted.

  • ITunes won't add pdf file to library

Using iTunes 10.7 on Mac OS 10.6.8
Simply trying to add a PDF file (created in Word for Mac 2011 v. 14.2.4) to my iTunes library so I can upload it to my iPad.
I have done this many times before with no problems. Suddenly my iTunes will not add my files to the library.
I did just run an automatic Mac software update (not sure what it was), and an recent update from Microsoft, but nothing out of the ordinary and I can't see why that would affect whether iTunes adds files.
Tried looking in HELP function but fould nothing remotely related.
Have no idea what to do now.
Any suggestions?  This is something that I do a lot of so I'm having a real breakdown here!
    Thank you for any help.

  • ITunes won't add mp3 files to library

I recently downloaded some mp3 files and for some reason I can't add them to my iTunes Library.  I've done this before without any problems.  The mp3 files play fine on my iMac, but I can't open them from within iTunes nor add them to the iTunes Library.  I've tried to drag the files into the Library or into a blank play list in iTunes and nothing happens.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Some mp3s are somehow coded with something iTunes does not like.
You can try the MP3Scan&Repair utility (do a web search).
You can use a lossless mp3 editor such as MP3Trimmer, Fission, or AudioSlicer ( this one is free and works on my G4 but maybe not on newer computers).  You can open the mp3 and save it again and maybe iTunes will like that copy better.
You can re-code the mp3 back into mp3 using a third party tool or maybe Garageband (I don't have that).  This is undesirable because there will be lossi n quality.

  • Itunes won't add movie files since updating to version 12.1.1.4

I have always added my own movie files in mpeg-4/mp4 format to iTunes in the past with no problems until I updated to 12.1.1.4.  Also, when I try to play a movie in iTunes, it says "This movie requires quicktime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes." Suggestions?

You may need to install the version of iTunes here: iTunes for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards).
And then repair/reinstall QuickTime 7.7.6 for Windows.
Next time Apple Software Update or iTunes tells you there is a new version revisit the first link. It should be updated with a new "for older video cards" version that will work with QuickTime.

  • ITunes won't add files or folders

For the last couple of days I've been having a problem where iTunes won't add files or folders for no discernible reason. Yesterday I was able to add a few videos, then I wasn't. Today after reinstalling iTunes it added my music just fine, but when that was finished and I wanted to add something else, nothing. I don't know why it's doing this. Drag and drop doesn't work, either. When I try to bring a file over, I get a little red circle with the line through it saying it can't do it.
    Help?

Ok. So its finally working again. Not sure why, but maybe my experience will help someone else.
All I can say is that I have been trying a relentless combination of mounting and mounting the drive, checking and unchecking the 'copy files to iTunes Library', running 'consolidate library', and everything in between. One of them finally kicked it back into action.
Nice Apple. 9.2.1 isn't buggy at all...that's sarcasm.

  • Used to convert all my videos into iPhone mp4 format using Any Video Converter - then add it to my iPhone 3GS. But last few days, I cant add video files to iTunes. and the iTunes doesnt even specify the reason except for that "files are not supported"

Everyting was perfect earlier. Used to convert all my videos into iPhone mp4 format using Any Video Converter - then add it to my iPhone 3GS. But last few days, I cant add video files to iTunes. and the iTunes doesnt even specify the reason except for that "files are not supported"
    Everything is fine.
    -They are the right format
    -Quicktime is updated
-I have tried simply dragging them into the 'movie' library
-I have tried going to file<add file to library
Nothing works, has anyone else had this problem and found a way around it?
    Any and all help appreciated.

In addition to Mike's suggestions,  you only have 4GB of RAM and Mavericks does use more RAM than other versions. You may also want to look at the apps that startup on login and the possiblity of upgrading RAM.

  • I am not able to add video files to my itunes after installing itunes 10.7

I am not able to add video files to my itunes after installing itunes 10.7.0.21

I Have been using, Ipad for only around a month or so (Ipad 2), and it was only yesterday that i tried to use the Itunes. I first downloaded the latest itunes (10.7.0.21), and took backup of all my Ipad data.
After this, I wanted to add some video to my ipad, as it was essential to add the same to My itunes first, I roceeded to do just that. I went through this command {File - Add File to Library}, and then went on to select the Video file. There's just a flicker, and then nothing happens at all - the itune screen remains, and there is no error message too. Whereas, I can easily add Audio Files.
After this, I even downaload the latest Quick time (7.7.2), as I had read somewhere that the same is necessary. When I tried to open the Video file in Quick time, it did not open. After that I downloaded the codec DivX and DivX player. Though the Video plays in DivX, it refuses to open in Itune and does not play properly in Quicktime (slider moves, but sound and video is not there).
    Frankly, I am utterly confused.

  • After upgrading recently I got this message: "The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." The music/video files are still on my MacBook Pro.  Is it because I'm still on 10.5.8?  How do I fix this?

For your reference I’m using a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8.  Several weeks ago on a Monday I received an upgrade for iTunes. When Tuesday arrived I attempted to log in so that I could download the latest freebie song(s).  I was met w/this message: “The file ‘iTunes Library.itl’ cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.”
The music/video files are still on my Mac (I’ve verified that via Searchlight), but I’m unable to open the program.  Since I know that 10.5.8 is rapidly becoming prehistoric, could it be that the newest iTunes isn’t compatible w/this particular OS?  I’d like to switch up, but understand that the newest OS won’t work on a Mac of this vintage (6 years old).  In addition, my Adobe products (all CS2) won’t work w/anything newer than 10.5.8, so I’m reluctant to go to a newer OS (I just can’t afford the Adobe upgrade $$$ @ this point).
Is there any way to get a download of an “old” iTunes version?  If there were, I’d simply refuse any future upgrades until my personal economy allows me to stop working as if it were 2006.  Please advise, somebody!

I don't know how you received an upgrade for iTunes.  You make it sound like it was sent to you.  At most your computer will tell you of a new version and you tell it to download it and install it.  However, a computer will not do this for a version which is incompatible.  iTunes 10.7 came out a few weeks ago but your computer would not notify you and even if it did, 10.7 would refuse to install on your computer.  So this part isn't making a lot of sense.
Two ways to get the 'newer version' message.  One is to open your library on a computer running a newer version, and then try to open it with an older version.  Usually happens when the library is on an external and used with multiple computers.  The second way is if you have multiple versions of itunes installed on your computer.
The newest (and likely the last) iTunes for OSX 10.5.8 is iTunes 10.6.3 which has been out for quite a while.

  • Unable to add video files to Library

    Hello, good evening.
(I don't even know how to start...)
I'm having some problems while trying to add video files to iTunes' library. No matter if I try to drag it in, or use the File > Add file to Library option, it just doesn't show up on the Video category (or any other category either). However, it adds music files and downloads podcasts perfectly. Also, everything in the library syncs to the iPod without problems, including the videos that were already there prior to the iTunes 6 to 7 update.
The video is already a .mp4, converted with the Videora iPod Converter. I'm using iTunes 7.0.1 on Windows XP. If other detail is needed to answer my question, just ask.
    I guess this is it...
    PC   Windows XP

Wierd. When you say it doesn't show up in the Video category, you mean "movies" category, right? Because there is no "video" category.
I don't think iTunes would mistake it for a music file, and it probably wouldn't show up in TV shows (and I'm sure you already tried that), but did you check under Podcasts?
It doesn't give you an error message when you go to import? Can you play the file within windows?
