ITunes 32 bit or 64 bit?

Greetings, I have windows 7 64 bit and have iTunes 9.2 32 bit installed, I woulkd like to use the 64 bit version of iTunes 9.2, my question is, can install the 64 bit version over the top of the 32 bit version, or is a separate 64 bit version installed, or would it be best to uninstall the 32 bit version and install the 64 bit version by itself?
Any help/answers would be appreciated?

From what I understand, itunes is a 32-bit program. When you install the 64-bit version, it is just the drivers (mostly for your PC's video card) that are 64-bit. The apple website is supposed to be able to figure out which operating system version you have - easy call to the OS for the version for 32 or 64 - so what you are seeing may be normal.

However, as soon as I try to install a non-windows program it automatically defaults to the ‘stopped’ setting and issues the error message about not being able to verify the package being installed.
I followed the steps to unregister and reregister Windows Installer too, also to no avail.

You are correct but to a point. I thought so too, however, like you, I am "second in command"...under myself.
I was in the same situation and tried others' successful workarounds. Nope. Actually, an ongoing frustration for a few months to no avail...until I came across this link, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_programs/ this-installation-package-could-not-be-opened/40c3cf33-b155-4dc7-b21e-ca5acce105 f3. It shows you how to access the Administrator login, literally. It worked for me.
This is from a Microsoft support page (SJ has probably been alerted, so I don't have much time, LOL). I did not want to hit that "final" option and reinstall Win 7. The first time was trying enough and I was about to give in.

I was opposite on this one. What led me to think it wasn't the above was seeing this user " ` " , also known as Accent grave. The Users first file is labeled " ` " and has a little gold lock on it. When I scanned Task Manager, under Processes Tab, the User Name column showed " ` " attached to certain processes. I knew it was me, but did not realize it was the Alpha me
I cannot say if the system automatically did this or I or Alpha (I'm blaming Alpha). If there is a way to change this I do not know, and if I should. Either way, I will do some more research and pray another personality isn't isn't lurking about

Let's say this again to make sure it is clear (there is obviously a language barrier here): there is no version of ITunes for the 64-bit version of Windows XP. Users have had some limited success in forcing the version iTunes that is intended for the Windows Vista 64-bit onto Windows XP, but it is not easy and does not always work.
If you are unable to make it work, you will not be able to run iTunes unless you are willing to go back to the 32-bit version of Windows XP or to upgrade to Vista or Windows 7.

I install itunes 10.3 64 bits on windows 7 prof. and all icons of the other programmes are replaced by itunes.

When I install itunes 10.3 64 bits all icons of other programmes change to the itunes icon. I am using windows 7 pro.

You experience may varry, but when I tried the installation ran for a while and ended with a message saying Quicktime could not be installed. I checked the Programs menu and iTunes was not listed after this failure.

When you download iTunes select the option to save the installation instead of running it immediatly. After the download completes right-click on the installation and select properties. The error you are getting has certainly been associated with a failure of Windows updates, but I don't know if the one you mention is an issue.

That one can sometimes hit people if they've used the PC Mover utility to transfer a 32-bit iTunes program onto a 64-bit system. Similar issues can arise if a 32-bit Bonjour or 32-bit AMDS get transfered across to a 64-bit system by PC Mover, so it might pay to keep a weather eye out for that (if you've used PC Mover).

There are 3 issues I have, as it reads in the title.
1) I am running iTunes on a Win7 64-bit ThinkPad, and iTunes shows up as a 32-bit application in the Task Manager, always. I tried even the complete uninstalling (after removing Bonjour, Apple Mobile Service, deleting the folders, etc.) and yet, it shows up the same way.
2) When I run diagnostics, it says 'Secure link to iTunes Store failed'. I've tried many things from whatever I've read in the forums and nothing seems to be changing that.
3) Every time I click the 'Info' tab on any iDevice (I tried it with a 3GS and a iPod Touch), I get a 'SyncMapiInterfaceHelper_x64 has stopped working' message thrice. I don't know the significance of thrice but it just does come.

That one's normal. On 64-bit systems, iTunes is a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit componentry. The itunes.exe is 32-bit.

Could you walk us through what happens when you try to connect to the Store, please?
The issue is when I run diagnostics. I happened to run it last night while updating my 3GS to iOS 6, and there was a 3194, and a search to solve that, led me to running the diagnostic.

ITunes for Windows 64-bit (oops, doesn't install under XPx64)

Just as the subject states, whenever I try to install iTunes 7.6 64-bit, it declares that I must have Windows Vista in order to install this. If it's not supposed to work for XP x64, then why post that on the download page? Hopefully if you were trying to be nice and provide us with an XPx64 copy, this trouble will be corrected sometime down the road?

The 64 bit version of iTunes will not install on my machine either. The setup program only checks for Vista 64 and if its not then it won't allow you to install. If there's no major difference in how iTunes works under XP and Vista then It seems like all it take is for the setup program to check for Windows XP x64 then allow iTunes to install.
P.S. I've installed the 32 bit version of iTunes on XP x64. It works but is not stable; It already crashed twice.

Can't install itunes on windows 64 bit system

I tried to install itunes on my 64 bit machine, but with verson 6.0.5, it says this software doesnt support 64 bit systems. I tried to install an earlier version i think its 6.0.4.2 not sure, but it does install on my computer. When I try to open the program and quicktime, I get error box saying the program had a problem and couldn't open. Is there anyway to fix this problem, and is there a way to have the newest version of itunes to work on windows 64 bit?

iTunes and QuickTime have never been supported on the 64-bit version of Windows (look here for the official statement). Some people have managed to get it working (at least tolerably), but from what I've read, a recent update from Microsoft has caused a lot of problems. You might try rolling back recent Windows updates and see if you can get things working again.

I keep finding conflicting info on this topic. There appears to be a version of iTunes for 64-bit Windows, but task manager shows itunes.exe as being 32-bit.

The itunes.exe process itself is 32-bit (on a 64-bit install). Most of the iTunes program files are also 32-bit.
The miniplayer is 64-bit, and there are 64-bit plugins for Outlook. (You'll see those items in the iTunes folder in your "Program files" rather than in the iTunes folder in your "Program files (x86)".)
The GEAR drivers itunes uses for burning will be the 64-bit versions on a 64-bit system.
The iPod service will be 64-bit on a 64-bit system.
Apple Mobile Device Support is 64-bit (so you'll have the 64-bit Apple Mobile Device Service, and usbaapl64.sys and netaapl64.sys rather than usbaapl.sys and netaapl.sys, on the 64-bit system.)
Some of the bonjour componentry on the 64-bit install will be 64-bit.
Most everything else is 32-bit (QuickTime, Apple Software Update, Apple Application Support).
(Apologies for inaccuracies ... it's been a wee while since I checked the noir-household 64-bit Vista box for locations. The precise details of what is 32-bit and 64-bit can change between versions. For example, one of the big changes between the itunes 8.x 64-bit versions and the itunes 9.x 64-bit versions was the iPod Service going 64-bit.)

How to reinstall 64 bit over 32 bit iTunes installation

Best as I can tell, Apple Software Update installed the wrong iTunes update on my system. I've been running the 64 bit version of iTunes since I got this system up and running (Win7 x64, Intel Core2Quad, etc).
Today, I elected to go ahead and let iTunes update. No worries, except now I've got iTunes running in 32 bit mode (and slowly at that).
Because my library is in excess of 90K songs, I'd sure like to get the little boost that running in 64 bit mode offered.

This is by design.
There is no "true" 64-bit version of the ITunes.exe - but this should not be a problem, my library is about 40K songs and ITunes is usually using not more than 150M of memory. As the adress space limit for a 32-bit process on a 64-bit system is 3 GB, this should give you plenty of headroom ...
What the 64-bit version adds are 64-bit device drivers. These are required as you cannot run 32-bit drivers on a 64-bit system.

ITunes 10.5 64-bit resetting preferences and library

I have been reading the discussions here, but have not found anyone with the problem I am experiencing with iTunes 10.5 64-bit. The problem is as follows: Each time I start/restart Windows 7, iTunes reverts all settings and the library to the default settings from installation. I store my music files on an external drive and esperience no loss of files, album art, podcasts, playlists, etc. upon start/restart. This issue has only appeared since work upgraded the laptop to a 64-bit machine, on which Apple will not allow a 32-bit version of iTunes to be installed. I have saved a backup copy of all the files in the C:\Users\(user)\My Music\iTunes folder once iTunes settings and library were updated to point to the files on the external drive. However, no matter what I try iTunes returns to the "installation" state everytime the computer is started. Note: As long as the computer is running, I am able to open and close iTunes without losing the settings and library.
Keeping fingers crossed in hopes someone can help!

After following instructions for three different solutions that did NOT work; I found the solution that did work
on the support site for Syamntec.
Readers - Please, you must be VERY familiar with pc jargon and windows vernacular to accomplish the reset
of ALL the permissions in your registry.
Follow the ditrections below and pay attention to the notes for those running 64bit Win7.
Step one, back up the registry.
Step two, go to the MS KB:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf -ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en and download the file that installs subinacl. It is an MSI file, and will do a quick install of a few Microsoft files. Hint: Look in the folder listed below, "subinacle.exe" may already be there.
Step three, create a batch file (subinacle.bat) with the following commands: (Use Notepad - copy & paste, not the red stuff)
cd /d "Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (only for 32bit/x86 machines)
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f

Step four, run the batch file. Let it run until the Command Prompt screen closes, may take 30 minutes or more.
Step five, reboot the machine and run the install again.

ITunes 10.1 (64-bit) slow performance

I have recently bought a new pc, a very fast machine (see details below), but I'm experiencing bad performance with iTunes 10.1 (64-bit) for windows.
I don't have a lot of stuff in iTunes, I have about 120 apps, 500 songs, 1200 photos, couple of ringtones and 0 videos in my library. The whole iTunes interface responds slowly. Like clicking on Music, Videos, my iPhone in the side menu makes iTunes freeze for a couple of seconds and then switches to the screen. Even after loading a screen iTunes is freezed for a seconds before it's responsive.
I've googled around for a while, and got some tips to disable some options in the preference window, so I've set all unnecessary things off, like: crossfadings songs, automatic update checking, looking for devices, automatic organizing, ping, genius, shared libraries, etc. but it doesn't speed up iTunes much.
It gets even worse whenever I connect my iPhone 3G (Fw 4.2.1, 16GB, Black). iTunes simply freezes for like half a minute and the pc makes a few beeping noises because of connecting an usb-device. Even Windows 7 slows down a lot while connecting. iTunes gets responsive once my iPhone appears under devices in the side menu.
Software I have constantly running in the backround are: AVG anti-virus free edition, SQL Server 2008, Steam and Skype. Turning off these softwares doesn't make a difference as well. There are no virusses or whatever on my pc. I let AVG anti-virus do a complete scan like once a week.
Taskmanager shows iTunes using about 240,000K of memory, followed by steam with 70,000k of memory and skype with 30,000k of memory.
Anyone else experiencing slow performance or know how to resolve this ?

Windows 7 64-bit
Intel i7 950 @ 3.06GHz quad core processor
6gigs of ddr3 (1600mhz) memory
Ocz vertex2 ssd (The O/S and all music, photos, apps are on this disk)

Same with me! I recently bought a new laptop, and iTunes 9 was working just fine. It takes like 5 seconds to scroll down one line. Clicking on different tabs and things takes forever as well. I am not sure what is causing it yet, but like you, I have disabled all sorts of iTunes settings which has not helped yet. Hopefully Apple will fix this problem soon! Let me know if you find a way to solve this.

Fallout75, good catch on the eXo plugin. To remove it, in the Finder click "Go" on the menu bar and pull down to "Go to Folder" and then type ~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins
When that Finder window opens, you should see an "eXo" subdirectory. Just delete that "eXo" folder and iTunes should start without the error.
