ITunes 5.01 won't start

I recently updates my itunes to 5.01. Once I installed the update my itunes will not start. In the task manager the program is running under processes however under applications it is not listed and it never comes up. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 5 times without different results. The last time I uninstalled itunes was removed but Quicktime was not. However, the program does not show up in Add/Remove programs and it won't let me remove the progam but it does not appear to be installed correctly.

I had similar problems and finally had success today
hi Cam!

  • ITunes and QuickTime won't start

    Hi!
The problem is that I've installed iTunes, everything went fine, but when I'm trying to start it with iTunes.exe, it won't start.
I can see iTunes.exe in the task manager, for about 5 seconds, and then it disappears.
The same happens with QuickTime player(I don't really care about QuickTime but I thought it can help solving the problem).
I know there is a lot of topics about this on the internet, and yes I've googled it, but nothing solved my problem.
I tried a lot of things already:
    * start iTunes.exe with administrator rights
    * start iTunes.exe with XP and Vista compatibility modes
    * reinstall iTunes with XP and Vista compatibility modes
    * uninstall iTunes (and any other apple software), clean any leftover iTunes registry entry, and then reinstall everything again
    * boot my windows 7 in safe boot mode, and try to start iTunes.exe
    * turn off bonjour service then restart computer and try to start iTunes
    * create a new user account, login and try to start iTunes
Nothing helped on Windows 7 32bit, though I have a Windows XP installed as a Virtualbox guest(the host OS is linux), and there is everything works fine, but I would like to use Windows 7.
I had the same problem with the previous version of iTunes. Now I'm trying to install the latest iTunes downloaded from the Apple's site.
I would really appreciate any suggestions!
    Regards,
    Ferenc Nagy
p.s.: Sorry for my english, I hope you can understand me!

Many thanks. Yes, let's first try uninstalling the ACE pack and seeing if iTunes will launch now.
If iTunes doesn't launch, the pack may have left behind old QuickTime version 6.x componentry in unorthodox locations in your Windows 7 system files. So we'll go looking for that.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
    1. From the Start menu, click Computer.
    2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now, in Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • ITunes 8.2 won't start? Possible solution

After a bunch of software updates downloaded to my wife's iBook (G4, 14", 1.33 GHz, 768 MB RAM, OS X 10.4.11) last week, iTunes wouldn't start.
I tried other discussion suggestions (temporarily removing .itdb files in the [username]/Music/iTunes folder and deleting the folder's iTunes Library). iTunes still wouldn't start.
I trashed iTunes and followed other suggestions to remove all traces of it. I emptied the trash, restarted and reinstalled: Did iTunes work? Nope.
The crash report mentioned Quicktime. I tried to start it. No go. Hmmmm.
So I trashed Quicktime.app and all traces of it in /Library, /Library/Preferences and ~/Library (get to those by choosing Finder/Go/Go to Folder . . .)
I noticed the Quicktime folder for Library/Preferences also contained files for Flip for Mac WMV. So I deleted the Flip for Mac application, too. I emptied the trash. Two items wouldn't delete: an apple service -- can't remember what -- and a Flip for Mac service. The Mac said they were in use. So I emptied the trash again after the restart to delete those things.
Then I reinstalled Quicktime (7.6.2 for Tiger).
Viola. iTunes (and Quicktime) started working.
I suspect Flip for Mac and its parts were the culprits. I can't prove it. It was an older install and possibly incompatible with the latest update.
At the very least, removing Quicktime and reinstalling it solved my problem.

    same boat...8.2 won;t install.
Trouble shooting advises to uninstall itunes and QTime and download, can't download, machine locks up everytime at 97% complete. Now I can;t acces itunes at all...
And of course no support from Apple. Can't find anyone to answer an email or get a number to call...//
    Anybody?
If you get something please respond and I will do the same...

  • Updated iTunes, now it won't start at all

I had last used iTunes about a week ago. Last night, I went to open it again, which it did fine, but then immediately informed me there was a new version (which it seems to do almost weekly!) I told it to get the update, it took me to the site, I downloaded the Windows version, and let it start the install. Somewhere near the end, while installing (yet another) copy of QuickTime, it stalled and wouldn't finish. I had to force the PC to shut down. When it rebooted, I tried to start iTunes, got the hour glass cursor, and then the machine locked up solid...no keyboard or mouse input accepted. Had to force another shutdown. When I got it back up, I decided to retry the installation. This time it got to the final screen saying the install was done, but at that point, machine was again locked from accepting keyboard or mouse input. Powered down again, rebooted, and tried to start iTunes. Again, hour glass cursor appeared, then system locked solid. It was working fine before the install (note that iTunes originally opened up fine, before telling me there was a new version), but now I can't get iTunes to start at all, and reinstalling didn't seem to help. I don't see any way to get "official" Apple help on this site, as it seems to be limited to this forum. So what is the next step in correcting this mess?? Note that the machine always has Norton AV and Windows Defender running for protection, and is scanned pretty regularly with Windows Defender, Spybot S&D, and Pest Patrol, so doubtful there's anything bad on the system. I did disable Norton AV during the second install, in case that was a problem, though I've never needed to do that before. But right now, system refuses to start iTunes successfully.

Norton interferes with iTunes installs all the time. There are thousands of posts about it here on discussions.
One of them by NWA Capt in your own thread!
Turn off norton, run the install from your hard drive (not the internet) and see if iTunes will open.
    Then turn norton back on.
If it is Norton 2005, you might need these Lorraine M directions to set up Norton to allow iTunes

  • ITunes 10.5 won't start

    Hi,
I've had nothing but problems with iTunes 10.5 on my Windows 7 x64 system since I have made the upgrade. iTunes will sometimes start, but most of the time I launch iTunes and nothing happens. If I go into task manager, I see that "iTunes.exe *32" is running. Killing the task and trying to restart iTunes causes the same problem.
When iTunes gets to this state, I have to reboot. And rebooting hangs my computer at "Shutting down" so I have to do a hard power off. iTunes will run fine after a restart, but after some time will fail again after closing and being launched.
I've completely removed and uninstalled iTunes 10.5 to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? Is going back to the previous version of iTunes even an option when I am running iOS5?
    Thanks!
    Dan

I have had the exact same problem since allowing the 10.5 version of itunes to update on my computer. I spent over 1 hour on the phone with the apple support team, and they couldn't fix it. After they couldn't fix it, they tried to blame my  Norton 360 security, even though I tried to explain to them that it is a Windows error, and it even happened after I deinstalled the security software. (and yes, disabled the Windows firewall.) I ended up deinstalling all apple programs, quicktime, bonjour, and itunes from my computer. I then googled "itunes apps. downloads" and found a website where I could download the previous version of itune for free. it's not ideal, but I was stuck in a situation where I couldn't use my ipod at all. I can survive like this until Apple realizes that we're not all crazy, and fixes the problem.

  • Itunes download mac won't start

I have a newer macbook pro.  I need to update my ITunes to the latest version 11.1.  When I go to the website it seems to function well, and it sends me to the Thankyou screen, but the download never happens.  This should be simple but it just won't work.

    Hi WVhillbilly,
If you are having issues with downloading iTunes, you may want to try the following link and see if the issue persists:

  • ITunes downloaded applications won't start on my iphone

Hi there, I have updated my iphone to the new version of 3.1.2 and I have noticed that any applications downloaded from itunes, whether it was through my pc or the iphone, do not start on my device. are there any suggestions on what I should do?

Have you rebooted your device by holding the power button and swiping the top red slider to shut down first?
I've seen small instances of that where the app crashes cause this...
Otherwise, I'd suggest that you go back into iTunes and do a re-restore process on the phone again... Somehow something didn't occur accurately if the reboot doesn't help.

  • Itunes Setup file won't start up - please please help!

hi, i recently reformatted my computer and once downloaded the latest version of itunes i can't get it to start the installation
i click on the setup file, the hour glass flickers, then nothing
i've downloaded from different browers heaps of times and i tried to use an older setup file version of itunes and still the same thing
can anyone please help, i have no idea what could be going wrong!???
    thanx

Normally it is not a good idea to put your PowerBook to sleep whilst there are external drives still attached. It is best to eject/unmount any external peripherals prior to putting the PB to sleep. What is also not a good idea is to force it to shutdown in the manner you have described.
The first thing I would try is a PMU reset.

i think the last stable config i had was 10.6 for my iphone 4.

    Urgent help needed,
    mac user [marcus]

It appears, then goes again shortly after.
That's more consistent with malware than most other things ... however the AVG Antispyware typically catches that.
Let's check to see if you've got an atypical set of symptoms of a broken QuickTime. (Following up again on that error message that you get when you click on the QuickTime control panel.)
Let's try swapping out your existing QuickTime.
    let's try this technique first.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching QuickTime again. does it launch properly now?
If the QuickTime is launching properly, is iTunes launching too now?

  • ITunes and Quicktime won't start up.

I've tried installing and re-installing iTunes about three times now, and each time it'll seem to have installed successfully, but whenever I try to tell the program to start up, it just literally does nothing. I tried to uninstall Quicktime it starts the uninstall, then comes up with an error saying "Fatal error during" with no other text. I click Ok, the window closes and the uninstall is cancelled, with nothing being changed. please help

    *Replying to eddy*
An exception occurred while trying to run “C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL“C:\WINDOWS\system32\QuickTime.c pl”,QuickTime
    Perfect! Thank you eddy.
Okay, we're not just dealing with a broken QuickTime here. Some other application (of the same general type that I asked about earlier, or possibly a game) has installed older versions of QuickTime program files in your \system32\ folder. That's what is causing the QuickTime (and iTunes) launch problems, and it's also interfering with your QuickTime uninstalls (producing that fatal error message). So we're going to have to clean that stuff out as well (or else your QuickTime and iTunes are still not going to launch, even after we've fixed your QuickTime).
    Preliminaries
Download and save a fresh copy of the QuickTimeInstaller.exe (QuickTime installer file) to your hard drive. (Don't try to run the install on line, and don't start the install just yet.) Get the QuickTime installer that doesn't mention iTunes:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
*Uninstall and clearing program files and folders phase*
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from Microsoft:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install CleanUp"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries, and click "Remove". Quit out of CleanUp.
Now we'll clear away the leftover QuickTime program files and folders.
Open My Computer. Go "Tools > Folder Options" and click the "View" tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected and that "Hide extensions for known filetypes" is unchecked. Okay out of the Tab.
Now open "Local Disk (C:)" or whichever drive your Program files are installed on.
    Open the "Program Files" folder.
Right-click on the QuickTime folder and select "Delete".
Go back into My Computer and open your C drive.
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "system32" folder.
Look for any files or folders with Quicktime in the file name. Delete any such files/folders that you find. (Can't tell you precisely what to look for, because what QuickTime componentry gets dumped in there depends on which program did the dumping.)
Now empty your recycle bin and restart the PC.
    *Reinstall phase*
Don't open any other applications after the restart. Now start the reinstall by doubleclicking the QuickTimeInstaller.exe file you downloaded earlier.
Does that install go through okay? If so, do QuickTime and iTunes start launching again?

  • Itunes 5.0 won't start because of Quicktime

I'bve tried all of the fixes I've seen listed here. Even though my installer seems to have worked fine, I get an error when I try to start Itunes (2093) saying "Quicktime failed to initialize".
    Any suggestions?

What finally worked for me was to go through the install process for Itunes yet again, then to go back to the Quicktime page and do the standalone installation for the most recent version of Quicktime. (You have to look in the lower right part of the page to see it). Again, be sure not to choose the download that says Quicktime with Itunes-do Quicktime by itself. Hope this helps.

  • Itunes 7 installer won't start

Hi guys, i downloaded all versions of itunes 7+ and they never could install. once i clicked on the install icon, the timehour icon loads like its about to begin but then suddenly stops and nothing else happens. My itunes 6 that came with the ipod cd worked fine. Anyone that can help ???!!!
    I'm running xp SP2

I have a similar machine. iTunes upgraded fine, looks great.
But nothing happens when I try to start a song playing. No crash or lock up, the song just doesn't play.
I too wonder it if is something to do with this model.
Does this suggest they don't even bother to test software on models more than a year or two old? I don't mind beta testing if someone tells me that's what I have been given.
