ITunes 5 poor performance in mini player view

When I switch the iTunes 5 interface to the "mini player" view (green plus button), iTunes consumes ~65% CPU time continuously. This isn't the case when iTunes is minimzed, and when the entire interface is visible it only takes ~15% CPU time continuously. This wasn't the case with iTunes 4.x, in which the mini player mode didn't appear to consume any more CPU time than any other view mode. It's terribly annoying since it heats the computer significantly and forces my laptop's fan to spin nonstop.
I can only attribute this behavior to the new "skin," but is anyone else seeing poor performance from iTunes 5 in the mini player view?

No, I just downloaded iTunes 5 a few days ago and I don't have any add-ons. I should clarify that this is on my 867MHz Powerbook G4.
I've been observing the CPU usage some more, and it seems to take a huge hit with songs/labels that are very long; i.e.: ones that scroll sideways across the yellow display on the second line. I've noticed this behavior with Podcasts--the Podcast name will be short and will not scroll, then it's description will roll up and will be long enough to require sideways scrolling. The poor performance comes only whin scrolling titles are being displayed, consuming 45-65% CPU.
Playing music with short artist and album names consumes 10-15% CPU continuously, with spikes to 35% when the artist/album rolls upwards on the yellow display window. If sideways scrolling is displayed, again CPU usage stays high.
If iTunes 5 is in mini player mode and not playing anything (only the Mac logo in the yellow window), then continuous CPU usage is <1%.
It seems to me that text animation in the GUI has taken a huge hit with the upgrade to iTunes 5.

  • ITunes stopped playback of podcast when switching to Mini Player view

I'm using iTunes 10.1.1.4 and noticed that when I was playing a podcast and switched to the Mini Player view using the pull down menu (View -> Switch to Mini Player), the playback stopped completely.
I don't use iTunes a lot, but I would not have thought that this is a set up issue, most likely it is just a bug. I repeated the steps again later and it behaved correctly. But I have reproduced the playback stoppage issue several more times today listening to other music podcasts. I also had problems attempting to re-start a paused playback - I had to try several attempts before forcing it to re-load.
    Anyone else experiencing this?
I tried to file a Support Ticket so that I could report this, but I was unable to navigate through without getting to a "pay for incident support" - I just want to report this to Apple.

Thank you "the fiend" - I have submitted some feedback using the link that you gave, let's see if anything happens. It does not look like it is the appropriate place to report an issue, but it might lead to a case being created?
    Cheers!

  • ITunes always opens in Mini Player?? Help

Can't go into much more detail except that every time I open my iTunes, it opens in the little mini player. I should clarify by saying this by saying that by "open" I mean run iTunes after it has been QUIT after the last usage.

    Hey,
I am facing the same problem. Everytime i open iTunes on my mac, it always opens as the mini player on the left top corner of my screen(its never opened at any other position). Then i change it to the normal player with <shift>+<command>+m. Later, when i quit and reopen it, the normal window appears.
I've tried reinstalling it but the problem persists. Is there any way to fix this bug?
Using OSX 10.7.1 and iTunes 10.4.1.

  • Since iTunes update 8.1.1, iTunes keeps switching to mini-player mode

As the title says, when I open up iTunes after my macbook has been booted it keeps switching to mini-player mode instead of the full library. Sometimes does it when I open up iTunes whilst playing music as well. Never had this problem before seems to have started after the 8.1.1 update.
Any ideas how I could fix it or is it a new bug, tried deleting the preferences file in my home directory.

Thanks for that. The answer was really quite simple! For some reason with iTunes 8.1 it is necessary to turn of Airport Express speakers in order to watch music videos on the computer: before the videos played normally (without audio through AE speakers).

  • ITunes keeps opening in Mini-Player format

A few days ago I hit Ctrl-M (instead of Ctrl-N) and now find iTunes opens each time in Mini-Player mode. How can I get it back to opening in full screen mode?
(I have already tried the on-line help and can't find anything relevant. Also, I have checked and the tick-box in Edit/Preferences/Advanced is NOT set to keep the Mini-Player window on top of all other windows.)

Sorted it out myself ... somehow

  • Poor performance mac mini

    Hello,
I have a MAC mini originally equipped with 4GB memory but now updated to 16GB. The computer boots up quickly but it is very slow when I use the Safari web browser. It takes a long time to go from one page to another. I have made a clean reinstallation of the MAC OS X 10.9.2 and then only installed an Adobe Flash Player.
I have tested the MAC mini with Cinebench with the following results:
    Memory16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    OpenGL 15,03 fps
    Ref. Match 99,3%
    CPU 255 cb
    CPU (Single Core) 107 cb
    MP Ratio 2.39x
Does anyone have any clue what is wrong with my MAC mini?
I'm greatful for any help in this matter.
    Kind regards
    Ingemar

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Any change?
Select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
    Stop plug-ins to save power
    Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

    Hi Brad,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Take a look at the article below, it provides suggestions for isolating an iTunes issue in Windows. If you're only seeing the issue in one user account, you may be able to resolve it by pulling the preference files and reconfiguring iTunes.
iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717
If you experience the issue in one particular user account, the suggestions below may resolve the issue. Before proceeding, you'll need to make hidden files and folder visible in Windows using steps 1-5.
Remove iTunes Preference files. Some of the files that iTunes stores settings and preferences in may be unusable. iTunes saves its preferences in two folders. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The locations for the preference folders are:
    c:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
    c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

  • Win7 Pro x64 and iTunes - poor performance

    Hi all
I'm running iTunes on Win7 Pro 64bit, and iTunes is terribly slow when I connect either my iPHone 3Gs or my iPad.
Last night it hung using 14% of the CPU (i7, so plenty of power, far more than iTunes should need) for more than 10 minutes, so I cancelled the sync on my iPad.
I removed all the Apple software on my PC, and was installing the 64bit version again (same as last time), when I noticed that the installer sees the 64bit version as 32bit. I'm not sure if this is related, but I thought I'd mention it.
Is anyone else having this problem with 64bit? Any solutions that anyone is aware of?
    Any help appreciated.
    Alex

That's a blast from the past. (The bulk of my troubleshooting on the nVidia Windows 7 bug was about a year or so ago ... then a lot of PCs started shipping with the hotfix preinstalled and reports of the nVidia chipset thing pretty much died out.)
Strange though ... although your symptoms are actually more consistent with the nVidia thing than the P55 thing, that particular hotfix only used to affect nVidia chipsets rather than the Intel P55s. I wonder what's going on?
Ah well ... if it works, it works. Fingers crossed for an end to the trouble.

  • ITunes will not re-configure due to mini player

This morning, I had my iTunes open as the "mini player" and I closed it in that view. Now, when I try to open it, I recieve these three notifications in order:
"Please wait while Windows configures iTunes" -Gathering required information-
"An error has occured while attempting to create the directory C:\ProgramFiles\iTunes\iTunesMiniPlayer.Resources\da.lproj" -Retry or Cancel-
If I click Retry, I get the same message again.
After clicking cancel, I recieve the error message:
"The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2330.
Does anyone know why the heck my iTunes was preforming fine, and now I cant even open it, let alone re-install it (I recieve the same error code) just because I closed it out as the mini player? And if not, would anyone by chance have someway to contact support, I have done nothing but circles on the Apple/iTunes homepages trying to find an email that I can contact someone at?
    Thanks,
    Taco

  • ITunes Mini Player Not Available?`

Hey, I have an iBook G4 with the latest OS X version of Tiger and of iTunes. However, for some reason, I do not have an option in the Advanced preference to turn my iTunes window into the mini player. Oddly enough, I do have the option to keep the mini player floating above other windows. Is there some new feature in 6.0.1 that eliminates the mini player? Is my iTunes flawed?

    I've got another tip.
To make the mini-player zoom to real 'mini':
Click (and hold) on the bottom right corner of the mini-player and move the mouse to the left.
At a certain point the window will collaps to show only the control buttons.
To expand the mini-player to show the song info again, click on the bottom right corner, hold, and drag to the right.

  • Meta data (song information) not updating in mini player for radio stream

I notice in the mini player view, the meta data does not update for radio streams.  This is a big deal for me because I listen to radio stations all the time, and I don't want to have to switch between the mini player and full player to see the song information.  This wasn't an issue in iTunes 10 (and previous versions as I recall), where I could just click to toggle between the name of the station and the meta information.

I understand your concerns, but regarding the headphone jack, this is standard procedure. While you may have checked these things, and know more about the player, a lot of people will not check the basic things before contacting support. The Advisors have to check these things with you first to make sure they've been checked.
As far as transferring data goes, it is true that unfortunately we cannot transfer data over for you or make a back-up. Doing this for all the returns for different players would require a lot of resources, time and money, making the RMA process a lot longer for everyone. In some cases, it's even necessary to replace the harddri've or the whole player.

  • Mini-player album info stays no matter what, instead of fading.

For Itunes 11.1.1, when I open the mini-player, it shows the album info on the top and play, pause, skip, etc on the bottom.  It's supposed to show that when I have the mouse hovering over the art. But it shows the info no matter what.  Even after I move the mouse off of it.  Once or twice a couple weeks apart it suddenly DID fade the info off.  But once I closed Itunes and started it back up, it happened again.  This is how it is 99.9% of the time. Any idea why?  I included a screen shot of how the info over the art always looks.  This is only how it's supposed to look with the mouse over it but it's always like that. I know it's an incredibly mundane complaint, but I'm kind of crazy like that and it's driving me INSANE!  Please help.
    Thanks,
    MB

Update: while command-clicking on the album art thumbnail in the mini player in 11.0.4 no longer launches the album art in a second, resizeable, window, it does work if you click on the album art thumbnail at the top of the expanded window (i.e., while not in the mini-player view).
I know that I tried this in 11.0.4 before posting my first question last week and it did _not_ work then, so I'm not sure what I did differently today to get it to work, but today I have a separate album art window that I can resize to my heart's content, while still having the mini player showing me the progress bar at all times.

  • Mini Player always opens in center of screen

When I used iTunes on a Mac, I could move the Mini Player to another part of the screen, and iTunes would remember. With iTunes for Windows, the Mini Player always opens in the center of my screen.

  • Mini player always on top spoiled?

    Hi there,
there's is an issue concerning the mini player:
When you start iTunes and (before) checked "Mini player always on top" it isn't on top. If you enter options it is checked, though.
So, uncheck -> ok -> check (using Ctrl+, to enter options) makes it always on top. But as soon as a track is edited (using Ctrl-i), mini player isn't on top any more. So again unckeck -> ok -> check and it's always on top again.
Does anybody else see this behaviour?

  • General poor performance of my Mac mini

I have been using my mac mini for over a year, it continues to frustrate me how slow and unresponsive it can be even though I do very little with it, i.e organise photos and browse the web - usually looking for solutions to the poor performance problem!
I came a cross this app that has given me lots of information, unfortunately with my limited IT know-how there is nothing here that gives me any clues, as to the cause of the problem. I guess the red font is not good?
I'm sorry i can't be more specific about the problem other than to say that iPhoto and Safari the two programmes i use way more often than any other, keep giving me the beach ball. My internet speed is ok 25 Mbps down - 4.5 Mbps
Is there anything here that stands out as being wrong? if so any suggestions/ instructions for what I should do?
p.s. i had to quit Safari while writing this and have a report for this if it helps?
    Any help much appreciated.

    Hi Linc Davis
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I got this information from a time when I was opening up iPhoto, and then going to the iCloud folder. To be honest it wasn't the most disastrous of events, I did get a few beachballs and when I opened up a shared folder the photos weren't loaded as normal. As I get more lengthy delays in carrying out any activities I will post back the console results.
Just as a bit more info, I don't consider my problem an update to Yosemite problem, if anything since updating performance has been improved from Mavericks.
Do you have any comments about upgrading RAM from the 4GB I have?
Should I act on any of the messages in red from the EtreCheck report?
    Many Thanks
    Duncan
