ITunes 5 Won't Install -- Hangs on Unscheduling Apple Updates

Windows 7 64bit
Trying to update from last version to new version. Install goes until it hits the part where the dialog box says "Unscheduling Apple Software Update," the green bars goes a partial way, stops, retreats. Another dialog box appears and says "There is a problem with this Windows Installation Package. A program required for this installation could not be run. Contact..."
Then it backs out and reverts to the original/last iTunes version.
Tried disabling AV and Firewall...no joy.
Any suggestions?
Thanx!

using MSICUU2.exe didn't help me.  But,  the new replacement app did:
  http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
I fixed my problem like this:
Here's the deal -
1.  can you install itunes via the APPLE SOFTWARE updater?
I couldn't  so I downloaded ITUNES and tried to install it that way.   Hence  I got the same error hang as you.  Nothing worked,  (Multiple attempts at uninstall reinstall,  stopping of Services,  Reg cleaners  etc..)
2.  If answer is NO to #1 you must fixe the APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE Program.
OK  so I couldn't find a Download for this.   But:  if you have WINRAR,  open the ITUNES.EXE and extract the APPLESOFTWAREUPDATE.MSI file.  Execute the APPLESOFTWAREUPDATE.MSI separately.   And you will not be able to install it and have a similar issue as per your Itunes install.   This of course leads you to believe that the Itunes.exe  install is also installing all of these components including the applesoftwareupdate silently.   It must BOMB at that portion of the install and you are done.
3.  Your goal now is to get the applesoftwareupdate installed.   How do you do this.  Well -  here is what I did.
  a.  downloaded and RUN a PC  Installer FIX it tool from Microsoft.  This is a replacement for the older MSI fixer they used to use.
  http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
b. It will list programs to attempt to fix.
  choose  AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
c. Once it is done,  then reinstall apple program updater using
AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
Finally it should install since the Microsoft tool appraently fixed corrupted installation files in your registry for this application.
(Please note:  that I also disabled any apple related services such as BONJOUR or IPOD DEvice RUN:  services.msc to get there -  although this man not be necesarry.)
Hence Launch this APPLE UPDATE SOFTWARE (Click the ICON in your Start menu)  it should list ITUNES
select ITUNES from here and it will update.
KEY HERE is to ONLY UPDATE APPLE Stuff via the APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE program.  If that program is not working fix it.  Then Bingo.
I am sorry to see folks having this problem for weeks.
APPLE,   Spread the word.  PC's can get corruption in the registry on your product should the update be stopped or computer shut off during an update.  etc...   Please improve your software updater program to check for invalid registry upon launching the app.  This will prevent people thinking it is an APPLE issue.  It appears to be a problem on your PC's registry settings for the APPLE Software update.

Itunes won't install. Error message: Apple Application Support not found.  What is the fix for this?

It is always these four updates that fail.  I've tried downloading and installing them seperately from apple downloads.  I've tried various recommended fixes, and nothing I can figure out works.  Before these problems, itunes worked on the computer for a year.
Thank you again for wanting to help me.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • ITunes won't install. PLEASE. HELP. URGENT.

iTunes won't install. My PC got reformatted. Now, I can't install iTunes. I've been trying to install it for like 3 months now, then it still won't. I've tried to remove it completely, following the guidelines Apple has given. AND ALMOST EVERYTHING.
Then the other day, I was really really happy that I got it installed, I removed AVG Anti-virus from the PC and turned off ThreatFire. I thought that was the end of my problem, then yesterday, when I opened iTunes it won't work again! So I tried to re-install it, following every guideline. Still, it won't install! In the installing process, around "Registering iTunes automation server", I ALWAYS get the message "Some of its required files are missing. Please re-install."
I REALLY DO NEED YOUR HELP.

Describe what happens when you try to open iTunes - do you see anything? If there is an error message give it in full.
If there is no error message open the task manager (ctrl alt del) and look on the processes tab, do you see iTunes.exe there and does it stay there.
Try opening Quicktime - does that work normally, iTunes cannot work if QUicktime doesn't. If it doesn't work, describe what happens and give any error message.

  • ITunes won't install on my OS 10.3. Will Tiger 10.4 run it?

My PowerMac G4 is running Panther 10.3.9. I have a 733 MHz processor. iTunes won't install nor can I view any videos. If I go to Youtube the system crashes. Some sites tell me I need a flashplayer upgrade, but it won't install. An Apple tech told me to upgrade to Leopard 10.5 and it would solve my problems. My understanding is that Leopard 10.5 needs 867MHz to run. If I upgrade to Tiger 10.4 will that solve any of my problems?

    Hello marwhi,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
Yes, OS 10.3.9 cannot run the latest iTunes 9. You will need at least Mac OS 10.4.11 and above to run it. Your problem with YouTube may just be with your browser if you are using Safari. For now you might want to try Camino 1.6.9 and see if you have any better luck. Camino 1.6.9 tends to be a slightly more updated version of browser than the last version of Safari that runs on 10.3.9 Panther. If you do upgrade to Tiger 10.4.11 though you would be able to use a more updated version of Safari which will "play" nicer with sites such as YouTube and Google etc.
Hardware and software system requirements for iTunes 9 can be found at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
And here are the "Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger System Requirements". You will need to purchase a "full retail" version of Tiger 10.4 install discs from a third party reseller such as on ebay etc. and the discs tend to sell for a premium these days. General idea of price can be seen by going to ebay and searching for "full retail 10.4 Tiger install" and then clicking on the "Completed Auctions" link in the left column. This should give your a good idea of what they tend to sell for on the resale market when available. Do not purchase machine specific or "upgrade" discs.

  • 10.5.4 won't install-hangs on Configuring Installation

10.5.4 won't install-hangs on Configuring Installation and I have to force quit the installer. I've tried to wait it out for over an hour, but the progress bar never moves. This is with the Combo Updater. I've also tried using Software Update, but the progress bar for checking for new software stops about 3/4 of the way, and hangs forever. Any advice? Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Unfortunately such problems do occur for some people, not necessarily through any fault on the part of the user. Interruption of an update can cause problems for which there are solutions.
    Which update was it?
Go to the Apple icon and select Software Update and see what it recommends if anything. Don't actually instal, rather just quit SU and let us know what the result is.
Secondly, open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. Select your hard drive in the LH column then Repair permissions from the lower part on the RH side of the window. It will take about 10mins to complete its task. If there is a list of permissions finishing with a message permissions repaired rerun this to make sure there are no more. See whether the odd behaviour continues.
If it does, insert the original installation dvd and restart holding the C key until the Select your language window appears. Do this & on the next window Select Disk Utility from the Tools menu. Again select your hard drive but this time choose Repair Disk. If there are repairs indicated and they are completed rerun this too to check that no more are needed. When this is finished rerun Repair permissions as well if there were any repairs carried out. Restart the computer normally and see how it all goes.

  • ITunes won't install. Says error writing to file C:\Program Files\itunes\itunes.resources\da.lproj\AboutBox.rft

    iTunes won't install.
Says error writing to file C:\Program Files\itunes\itunes.resources\da.lproj\AboutBox.rft
Does anybody know what I need to do to fix this?

I am the administrator, so this can't be a rights problem. The error message says "error writing to file c:\program files\apple software update\softwareupdate.exe. Verify that you have access to that directory".
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive, as per the following document:
How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Itunes won't install. AMDS won't uninstall

Itunes won't install. I've tried to uninstall itunes and all apple software so that I can install the latest version. But it won't let me uninstall apple Mobile Device Support. Can anybody help? How do I get iTunes back? Whenever I try to install the latest version it gets stuck just after checking the AMDS.

There is no text error message. The install of itunes just freezes on the "Checking Space Requirements" bit (which is immediately after it checks AMDS.
Hmmmm. Possibly a disk/file damage issue there, tom. If so, running a chkdsk over your C drive might help.
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.

  • ITunes won't install.  No music.  help

iTunes message came up saying the software wasn't installed properly to recognize my iPod. I tried to upgrade and then it wouldn't install saying encountered errors before itunes could config. I followed som tech help situation resolutions and removed itunes & quicktime and disabled startup items. still iTunes won't install. i get same message. i've rebooted 4 times.

iTunes and quicktime are a bundled thing, iTunes uses parts of quicktime in the background to play audio and video. Try uninstalling iTunes AND quicktime, then download the latest iTunes from apple.com Disable your antivirus and install it (Installing iTunes installs quicktime too). Doing this is to make sure both iTunes and quicktime are current and up to date.
If it still will not play music, see if the progress bar is moving while it plays a song, even tho you hear no sound. Try going to, in windows, control panel>quicktime>audio tab and make sure "Safemode" is checked.

  • ITunes won't install after I click license agreement page

iTunes won't install after I click license agreement page

I had the same problem as many are having, I am running Win XP Pro and after installing the latest greatest version fresh no go, tried all the fixes mentiond around the net and no go all you get is the dam agree screen ... so I had enogh, I completly uninstalled the new version and then installed version 10 and it works fine so I think they droped the ball in the programing of the latest release thats my 2 cents. I am so glad i always keep older versions on hand because many times new versions are buggy or just do not work NOTE TO APPLE DO NOT FIX IT IF IT AINT BROKE comes to mind ... the older just work and the new junk fails don't they test the programs anymore? accross the dif supported platforms? whlth all these peole having the same problems I would say they botched the program code or installer.
It says after the install there is a newer version great after waisting all this time I will not be updating till they claime and prove they have a big prob and fix it and then test it compleatly.
Important my problem started on first installing Itunes ona newely set up XP comp so I had no settings or anything and did not care a full uninstall worked for me. Not sure with those that have tons of stuff allready in the iTunes system,
Complete working version 10.0.0.68 works fine in win XP Pro ...
