ITunes 6.0.1.3 won't save new music library location

I want to change the default location of the music libary, so I went through the edit | preferences | consolidate library processes...which seemed to work fine. However, every time I load iTunes, it creates a new iTunes directory in the old default location even though the "new" location is supposedly being used.
What the heck is going on?
I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling, and there is obviously not a complete uninstall because after the reinstall, the "new" directory was still being used and it should have been the old default directory.
Any thoughts? Thank you.

This method will change the location of the iTunes Music folder but the the iTunes folder itself will be left behind in its original place: C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Documents\My Music. This makes iTunes (and by extension will also make you) much happier and in this case you'll be well-advised to let it have its way.
Note that all the actual music files you now have, as well as those you will add in the future(which take up the bulk of the space on your hard drive), will be in the new location. The iTunes folder will be left behind with the iTunes Library files which don't take up much space at all ... if that's a concern.

I have just over 100gig of music in my iTunes library plus what ever else I add in the future. Because of the amount I had to save my music library on an external drive as my laptop did not have the memory to hold it all. I want to back up my iTunes library and save it on a different external drive, one I store all my back ups on. Is this possible? If so how can I do it?

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

  • IPad (4th Gen Retina Display Wi-Fi) (iOS 7.0.4) won't sync new music from iTunes (Windows).  Only solution found was to uncheck "Sync Music" under Music tab, apply, then recheck "Sync Music" and apply. Any other solution?

iPad (Retina Display) (iOS 7.0.4) won't sync new music from iTunes (Windows).  Only solution found was to uncheck "Sync Music" under Music tab, apply, then recheck "Sync Music" and apply.  This is timely and aggravating.  Any other solution?
I have also tried a hard reset.  I have also gone into settings and checked "display all music".
Anyone know if the new update will have solutions to this problem?

    Successful experience with Apple Care.
If anyone is having the same problem, there's a chance it's an issue with the Mobile Device Manager for iTunes. The key is to ditch the old/corrupt file and replace it via clean iTunes installation.
Here's the fix that worked for me:
    1. Trash iTunes (uninstall); don't forget to trash it from your dock if you have it there.
    2. Head to /System/Library/Extensions/ and trash file AppleMobileDevice.kext
    3. Head to /Library/Receipts/ and trash AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg  ( * this may or may not be there * )
    4. Restart computer (& empty trash)
    5. Download fresh & clean iTunes and reinstall.
Voila! The content is now properly recognized by iTunes, the capacity bar registers the correct amount and type beyond "Other", and now I can put music back on the iPad.

Why won't my new music purchased on my iPad not coming up on my iPhone??

On your phone, go to settings> App Store and iTunes> Turn on Automatic downloads for Music.  This should cause music purchases made on other devices to be downloaded automatically to phone.

You buy one and only one download.
As it should have been transferred to your computer when you synced, you can contact itunes support and ask for an exception.

Earlier back up is corrupted. Thank you in advance. No longer have my old iPod but getting new one.

If you had the hard drive from the original machine, a backup of the same, an iPod with the media, or a subscription to iTunes Match then there would have been hope, but alas no.

  • Why doesn't iTunes add protected MPEG-4 audio files to its music library?

Why doesn't iTunes add protected MPEG-4 audio files to its music library?  I copied these files to my iMac from an old PC laptop that no longer has internet access.

After downloading via iTunes, I move MP3 files from the default iTunes podcast folder to another folder (on an a external disk), I also change the name of the file and I change some MP3-tags.
You download from the iTunes store, delete the podcast, mess with it, move it around, rename it, change the tags then try to add it back to iTunes?
I want all my files in one index, the iTunes Music Library
In iTunes, right click - get info, click the Options tab and set *Media Kind:* to Music.

  • ITunes won't sync new music

I recently put some new albums on my iTunes, but my iPod won't sync the music! I also updated some things with other albums by the same artist(I added album artwork) and it showed those updates. Then I got another album and put that on there, and that album syncs! These three albums just WON'T sync to my iPod...why is that? I checked and they have the right information for the artist/album artist, album, genre, tracks, all that stuff. What would keep music from being synced?

Well that's weird they won't sync, then - if they play in itunes, your PC is authorized OK for those songs if they are purchased, and if they are not purchased, it's a file type itunes can recognize.
    Any errors?
Are you actually syncing the music to the iPod, or manually managing the music?
Where did you get them - download, ripped from CD using itunes?

  • ITunes Won't Recognize My Music Library on Ext Hard Drive

    Hey All,
Just got a iBook G4 and I'm trying to access my music on iTunes, but I can't. Is there a trick I'm missing here? I set the folder location to the Ext Drive, but still nothing. Everything work with out issue on my old iBook G3.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Pointing iTunes to a folder simply tells iTunes to put all new music there. You need to File -> *Add to library* then select that music folder.

  • ITunes 9.2 won't read my music library

After upgrading to iTunes 9.2.0.61 last night, iTunes will no longer read my music library. I can place each song in the library by playing it from the music folder itself, but with 8700 songs, that will take a while. Any one know the solution to this?

I have the same problem. Anybody?

  • Itunes needs help finding a 1/3 of my music library. is there an easier way

this is my 3rd post to this question with no responses as of yet. please help
"a couple of weeks ago i decided i needed to move my itunes folder to an external hd to save space on my macbook. everything was smooth except for itunes not being able to find a quarter of my music and me having to locate the songs one by one. i bought an iphone yesterday and decided my life would be much easier to move the music back to the computer and make room by moving other things off the macbook. i was also thinking this may remedy the missing file problem. nope. i know how to find the songs and they're in the right place, just wondering if there is an easier way then locating 3000+ songs individually? not sure whats going on. thanks "

Again many thanks. I have tried to tidy up the folders as per your idiot guide- which term is appropriate for me
Under iTunes Media though I do not have  folders for Books,iPod Games, Mobile Applications, Movies, TV Shows so I only have  Auto Add to iTunes, Music, Downloads and Podcasts - My question here is is this OK.
Next - Library files that you mention are there but do not end .itdb
Next  - in the main iTunes folder followingon from Artwork and Media folders  there is some other  iTunes database stuff like Library Extras, Library Genius, Library and Music Library(xml) all dated 10/02/12 plus MimiPlayer .dll dated 21/02/14 and Set Up Short Cut dated22/03/14
AND there is also a Programme Files folder with a sub folder holding file folders called CD Configuration,iTunes Resources, iTunes Help Resources, iTunes Mini Player Resources and Mozilla Plugins all dated 24/03/14 ( when I downloaded the new iTunes) and then a lot of application extension stuff from 2011
To recap I unistalled the old 32 bit iTunes and installed the new 11.1.5 (64 bit) version over the weekend  SO is any of the old stuff listed above required.
Outcome right now is that as previously I can only call up the Downloaded music not Podcats or CD copies.

  • Lost iTunes Libraries After Changing iTunes Music Library Location

I followed the iTunes topic: Moving Your iTunes Music Folder article. Now when I hook up my iPod, I get an error message saying that my iPod is synched to another library - my only choice is to "Erase and Synch" or "Transfer Purchase" copies to this library...meaning that I would lose dozens of personal CDs that I have copied into the library. HELP!!!

I too have tried lots of things as my music collection outgrew my laptop, so stored all tunes on an exteranl hard drive and found that, when i wasnt looking, crafting old Itunes had changed my storage location to default. I posted on here, and like this thread got lots of people wanting to know the answer to the same thing. One outcome seemed to be that if you start itunes before your computer has recognised the external drive that itunes is looking for, it will regiaster the drive as not available and revert, without telling you, to default location.
    Extremely irritating...
just a little add to the last comment about the software.. i agree, for a product that has sold millions and is downloaded millions of times i find it hard to believe they cannot get this right. Stupid things like this, not giving a notification that its changing to default location, abnd only realising when half my music and podcasts have gone missing, not rescanning the itunes folder for new tracks automatically on opening or by refresh to find new tracks added by, shock horror to apple, other download stores. Not allowing you to set several pre determined folder paths so most like most people you can have 3 maybe 4 completely different areas to save your music in and still ask itunes to not only find it every time, but update from it as and when you need to, not when it thinks you might want to, ie, never, and have the ability to recognise everything else added not via itunes.
For a world wide product it is simply awful. It would seem to me that one person in their spare time is developing this.
oh and last thing, maybe that one person should concentrate on doing proper updates and stop bugging me with a new 7.6.5.4.8.5.23 update over 7.6.5.4.8.5.22 i updated yesterday, and 7.6.5.4.8.5.21 the day before...
rant over... apologies if i bored anyone...
