ITunes 6.0.2 is unequivocally spyware

As of 6.0.2, iTunes:
- Automatically sends data about users' music listening to Apple's servers, without informing the user even at the time that it is doing so, much less giving warning beforehand.
- Uses this stolen information for the deplorable purpose of assailing users with spam hawking Apple's products.
- Relies on intentionally deceptive documentation in order to sucker users into installing this tainted version. "Performance and stability improvements" my foot.
Yes, the current version does include a small unlabelled button by which you can disable this "feature" after it is already too late. No, that is not anywhere near good enough to make this anything other than an astoundingly offensive disregard for privacy.
I love Apple and their products, but this is one of the few crimes ghastly enough to cause me to warn anyone who'll listen that they are untrustworthy.
  Mac OS X (10.4.4)

-----
Though I should point out that we don't actually have verified confirmation from Apple that they don't store this information, and we certainly don't have a guarantee that they won't do so in the future. All we have is one Macworld story that claims that "a source" within Apple assures us that they're not storing it now.
I'm not sure if this link will come through. I'm still not real proficient with cutting and pasting links:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303066
You'll note there that they say when the store is hidden, no data is sent regarding the highlited track. If you want to get upset with what they might do in the future, I suppose that is a legitimate concern. But from everything I've seen Apple/iTunes do, it seems to me that they're trying to be very careful about user's privacy. There's a feature in the main Music Store called "Just For You". It only recommends stuff that you tell it right then and there that you have/don't have/don't like, etc.
The fact that the MiniStore keeps recommending to me stuff that I've already purchased from them reinforces my belief that they are not storing the data. Otherwise they would be recommending to me stuff that I haven't bought yet.
Given that Apple's goal with this feature was to plaster advertising all over my display, I have a hard time ascribing purity and altruism to their decision making process.
They didn't plaster it "all over your display", they plastered it in the bottom 1/4 of your main iTunes window. You can make that go away, several ways. Among the 2 ways already mantioned, you can minimize the itunes window, you can turn it into the little mini player. Your -display- will have no advertising.
There's a difference between your display and the iTunes main window.
I'm afraid that you are assuming incorrectly. I am aware that it "only" sends information about tracks that are selected. I fail to see, however, in what way that's substantially less offensive.
An application that wishes to send any of my private information outside my computer needs to have my explicit knowledge and consent, and have them before it ever does so. Whether it's a few songs or an entire playlist does not alter Apple's violation of this simple principle.
No need to be afraid. My assumption wont hurt you.
What they're doing is what some people refer to as Web 2.0. They've made it interactive. If iTunes sends information that isn't stored, and they use that information to recommend other music, then what's the harm if you can make the advertising go away? Lots of shareware out there has advertising built in that you can only make go away if you register the program. With iTunes all you need to do is click a button.
Also, did you read the licensing agreement before you clicked on "I Agree"? If you clicked on "I Agree" then you gave them consent. It's only your own fault if you did not have explicit knowledge. It's your job to read the fine print. Apple cannot send a person to every person's house to explain it verbally and have them initial next to each point in the agreement.

I think I have this on my computer, am getting popups & they're getting more frequent...I've run adaware but they still happen. read somewhere to go to startup in msconfig but i dont know which things are important & which arent so i'm afraid to disable anything on there, although a few have shady names:

Anyone know anything about this? Sorry to post the unrelated thing but people on here seem to know what they're doing w/ computers...

Well, just to give you a heads up, this post goes against the Terms of Usage, particularly the second bullet of #2:

What I'd generally suggest is Googling for applications you don't recognize. Some are real, some aren't. I've seen ones with weird names like that last one you listed that turn out to be real (one was a wireless driver, I think).

  • Itunes.exe has generated errors...videos wont transfer

I have Windows 2000 w/service pack 4 and all updates.
itunes and ipod work great with the EXCEPTION of when I try to transfer downloaded VIDEOS from itunes to my LIBRARY. The downloads are on my hardDrive but when I try to transfer them over to the ipod a PROGRAM ERROR alerts that itunes.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows...and shuts down. Yes I have already TWICE removed and reinstalled itunes with all virus scans and spyware OFF, downloaded the stand alone quicktime.Still no luck.
What the heck is causing this???
    HP Windows 2000 amd-K6 3D

If you know where this error log it generates/creates is, copy and paste it here in a post so we know whats happening.
Just to cover basics, run antivirus to check for viruses on your PC, run any malware program you use to check for ad/spyware, and after that turn off or disable any antivirus/security programs you have before installing iTunes. there is a slew of post here on both Norton AND Mcafee and how they have interfered with installs of iTunes
Someone may correct me on this but seems like your installer files are corrupt. run Microsofts "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" and anything listed as iTunes or Quicktime remove with the cleaner. You can get the clean up Utility at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

  • PLEASE READ ITUNES ACTING Weird

I recently dicovered that my itunes hadnt been functional when i had installed nortan anti virus. so i uninstall then reinstalled and now when i run the program the liscence agreement pops up for 2 seconds then disapeers so i cant access itunes please help.

You might have spyware then, if your iTunes is malfunctioning like this.
Reinstall Norton, but Disable it when you use iTunes.
Download Ewido FIRST, it's an anti-malware scanner that keeps things from screwing around with iTunes. after you run a full system scan (may take 15-30 minutes), reinstall Norton, then try opening iTunes and see if it functions okay.
Repost this if there are any more problems with this, otherwise please mark this Solved so other users know what to do in this situation

  • ITUNES LITE PLEASE

Spyware + ituneshelper + quicktime + IPOD what for I do not need it !
If I wanted to buy a Ipod I would have done so 2 years ago.
Would Apple please be so kind as to provide a Itunes only version with no "spyware" ituneshelper or Quicktime and please no Ipod stuff.
I only want a Itunes music player with a visuaizer or maybe do it "ITUNES LITE"
I only need Internet radio + music Library + Visualizer as all the music bought on ITUNES was lost when my Pbook died.
So obviously I will not buy from Itunes again as Insurance will not pay for lost Itunes downloads even though I have the reciept of online purchase.

    I will never use Quicktime
You use QuickTime every time you use iTunes. As I said before, QuickTime provides all the actually playback services; iTunes is basically just the storage and display application. So again, no QuickTime, no iTunes. Presuming you're running a Windows system (you're in the iTunes for Windows forum, though your profile indicates you're on a Mac), you can remove the QT icon from the task bar; go to the QuickTime control panel, select the Advanced tab, and uncheck the box at the bottom of the window.
As to a Spybot search, I don't see what that has to do with anything, since neither QuickTime nor iTunes, as I said, contain any spyware. Once again, the only information that gets sent to Apple is through the iTunes Ministore window, and all you have to do is turn that off. And since you said you don't care if information is sent to Apple, I don't see what your problem is here.
The "does nothing" only applies to the iPodHelper.exe; once again, QuickTime is absolutely necessary for iTunes to work.

  • How do I get my Ipod driver back in my device manager?

    Ok, it goes like this:
Brand new Ipod, replacing one that was permanantly locked up, is not recognized by my cpu. Have uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes, have checked for viruses and spyware, have done every thing tech support and this site suggested to a letter.
A tech savvy friend of mine theorized that I may simply need the Ipod driver downloaded onto my cpu, and then the cpu would recognize the Ipod.
Does this make sense, and if so, can someone point me in the right direction?
    Please and thank you...

This might be the problem I'm having.
My 5G 30GB iPod's working fine but isn't recognised by my computer. It won't even charge on my computer. I've tried it on another computer and it works fine.
I've uninstalled, re-installed, done everything i can find on the support pages and it still won't work. The USB ports on my computer are fine as my mobile phone connects and charges and synch's with my pc just fine in the same port.
    I've switched ports as well.
Uninstalled any newer programs that may have caused the problem since i last connected. Nothing!
What is going on Apple - sounds like a lot people are having the same sort of troubles.
Edit - it's now charging, but still not recognised...

  • Whatsspp virus?

May i know can downloading of pictures in whatsapp cause a spy instrusion?
If so, will backing up in itunes cause the backup of the spyware as well?
Can reinstalling of whatsapp eliminate the problem?
    Anyone can help?
What i understand that if any applications that uses notification services will go straight to apple iphone's IOS?

No I dont jail break my devices. In that case can a virus invade apple devices when we click on a link in an email?
At this point, what possibilities are there that someone could listen to the environment surronding via iphone or ipad? i suspect my devices has been compromised.
Is there a way to verify if the phone security has been compromised?
I also understand code can be imbeded in a picture and send to a party via messages (whatsapp or sms). By clicking it to view, if whatsapp's notification is turn on, it goes to the main source thereby affecting the iOS?

while synchronizing my iPhone 4G with just freshly actualized Apps in the small window at the top of iTunes site appeared the word "aerogram", which is not an App. is it spyware ot what else?

I was curious when this popped up as an app that I could not synch because the computer I was using was not authorized.  I had just set up my Iphone and had only installed five app.  After a web search I believe the Aerogram is actually part of the id for the Yahoo Mail app as it was the only app that was not listed of the five installed. On another site I found the following info.
    App Name: Yahoo! Mail
    Bundle ID: com.yahoo.Aerogram
    iTunes ID: 577586159

  • RE: New iTunes Spyware?

I love my iPod. I love the itunes store. I love my Mac. I think Steve Jobs is a genius. But I'm sorry people, enough is enough.
The new iTunes upgrade has lowered itself to the level of SPYWARE.
In a real sense, it IS spyware.
Why should some bot or person, or marketing company in Utah or wherever, be logging what I am playing (like a wiretap for iTunes), every time I play whatever 'it' is???!!
I'm angry. Not just because the latest marketing ploy blatantly invades my privacy, but also because this kind of approach is (or should be) beneath the high standards of Apple.
I shop all the time on the iTunes store. Must my loyalty be repaid with more advertising and privacy invasion?
Apple, I just know there is a another way. Time to correct a faux pas and implement a better way.
    iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.8)
    iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.8)
    iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

To the people saying "what makes you think something untoward is going on?" I would ask the reverse question -- what makes you think something isn't? I love Apple and use their products almost exclusively where I can, but if they weren't tracking our information, they would say so. And if they aren't tracking it, they should let us know ASAP, because having no statement out there just fuels the fire.
Privacy statements are a way for companies to tell their customers what data is collected, how it is used, how long it is stored, etc. Apple silence on this issue speaks pretty clearly, and frankly, I'm not really inclined to give any company the benefit of the doubt when it's so easy to be clear about it.

  • Spyware in Apple iTunes 5.0?

I've notice my firewall was detecting the follow service trying to access the internet even before I open iTunes. What is this software, and whats is it trying to to do?
    Bonjour Service - Apple Computer, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe
At first I didn't know it was Apple Computer, cause my firewall service didn't know who published it. All that appear was Bonjour Service. Not untill I ran HiJackThis did it tell me who it belong too.

Just notice a website from Apple that explane what Bonjour Service is: http://developer.apple.com/softwarelicensing/agreements/bonjourwin.html
From what I can see this is a P2P type of service in a way that Apple benfits that once a consumers download a song, and another consumer is looking to download the same song, insted of downloading from the Apple Network servers, it downloads the song that another users has from their computer, saving Apple Inc. bandwith, and computer resource. Using the consumer computer has a network P2P. Not good business to be using consumers computers to transfer product Mr. Apple Computer. You should be paying me for using my bandwith.

  • ITunes and spyware doctor

Every time i open iTunes, it shows me a windows installer window, and then it opens. When i then quit it and do an intelli-scan using spywaredoctor, i get a risk. It is called Adware.PodcastbarMini and it is a high risk. I tried opening other apple software, but it doesn't give it when i open that. I totally uninstalled all the apple software on my computer, and then installed iTunes and Quicktime again, and i didn't open it yet, i just ran a intelli-scan again, and i got the Adware.PodcastbarMini risk again. I have no idea if it is a problem with iTunes or if there is some type of a virus on my computer. Please help. Thanks

When you wrote "It works ok in safe mode", do you mean that you booted up Windows 7
in Safe Mode, or that you used Firefox and EI8 in their Safe Mode option.
Now depending on your response from above you can go many ways.
If you started the web browser in safe mode then it means that both or one of
the software got corrupted and needs to be reinstall, or it means that the add-ons
used in one affects the performance that it makes it not respond. But that wouldn't
be the case with IE8 because it doesn't really have any add-ons that would make  it act
that way, unless one of it vulnerabilities is being exploited and makes its act like that.
If the add-ons are the problems on Firefox, then you can disable all, and the enable one by one,
or three or any number at a time and see which one causes the problem, and remove it.
Also try and delete the cookies and all data store on both browsers, see if that works.
You can try older versions of the browsers and see if that works better.
Have you scanned your hard drive for malware or viruses?
Also try Safari, the PC version, of the web browser, see if that also goes down or it works fine.
Hope this helps a little bit.

  • ITunes Spyware

How disappointing to learn that Apple pulled a SONY with the latest release of iTunes. Applaud the OPTION of having my music playing information sent to Apple so they can better tune the advertising to my tastes on the music store, but deplore that it was done without my knowledge or the option of turning it off.
SHAME!! especially in light of all the grea updates that were launched this week.

I agree with macmonte. I was shocked when I restarted my computer after allowing the latest upgrade and started listening to music I have in a private playlist that the Music Store was monitoring what I was listening to and posting suggestions of what I might like to buy based on each selection. I never gave anyone permission to spy on my listening practices. I was never told how to turn this feature off, and if I had not queried "help" after searching for a way in preferences, I would never have found this discussion group.
I am also irritated by the fact that I have to sign up to acquire an "Apple ID" to even make a complaint. There is no longer anyway of contacting Apple directly. Apple seems to feel they are free to spy on me, but I have no way of even finding them!
Clicking the icon on the bottom right of the screen did indeed make that window go away, but how do I have any assurance Apple is not connected to my computer anyway - just because that window is gone - they put up that window without my permission. What else are they doing without my permission? It's a trust issue! Apple has broken mine.
I intend to avoid using iTunes when I'm connected to the internet in the future to try to avoid this spying, and I am turning off access to the Music Store in my preferences. I find this practice deplorable, and like macmonte, I used to love iTunes (and still love aspects of it - the stuff that was there before this latest "Upgrade"!)
That's my two cents for what it's worth.

  • Itunes program not responding and wants me to send error report

I have read many posts and answers to this problem and have tried about everything that I have read. When I try to open the itunes 7 program on my desktop, it says the program cannot respond and must shut down. It also asks if I wish to send an error report. I have installed and uninstalled the itunes 7 program several times. I have disabled my spyware applications and my norton antivirus programs and then tried to re-install and I get the same thing. I have also tried to install Quicktime 7 stand alone program and when I try to install and run this program another message comes up that states that it cannot install this Quicktime program because another more recent QT program is already installed on my computer. I am really starting to go crazy here. Can anyone help?

    okay, let's try this first.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall
    QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files
    and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or
double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click
    Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and
    QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your
PC by doing a repair install of
    itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications
    prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change"
    and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the
PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch
    properly now?
i tried all above as i am having the same problem, but i still get the message "itunes has encountered a problem and must close" and quicktime still does nothing when i try to open it...
