ITunes 6.0.5 crashes with older CDs!

I am running a PowerBook G4 550mhz (yes an oldie but goodie) and i have discovered a new problem with my iTunes 6.0.5. when i insert an older CD (from maybe pre 1996?) and hit play or import, it crashes my iTunes. I have to do the whole Force Quit routine. With newer CDs (2005 CDs work), there is no problem. I'm not sure what the cut-off date is because I haven't done enough research but this is a strange thing.
Does anybody have any ideas? It is real annoying and I'm sitting on some old CDs that I would love to download. Is it my computer, the iTunes or something in between?

As a workaround, you could possibly rip the old CDs on another computer, burn them and use the new burn in your 550.

  • Itunes crashes with audio CDs

Recently, I've had very frequent problems with iTunes crashing when playing commercial audio CDs. The crash usually happens at one of the following times
    - When a CD is inserted (if it's a new CD, the crash happens after iTunes has retrieved data from CDDB, but before the CD appears in iTunes).
    - When starting to play a CD.
    - When a CD has finished playing.
    - When ejecting a CD.
Sometimes it also crashes in the middle of playing a CD, but the crash usually happens at one of the points listed above.
The crashes started about a month ago, after I updated to iTunes 8.2. I tried reverting to iTunes 8.1.1, but that didn't stop the crashes.
Here's what I've tried so far:
    - reinstalled iTunes (tried both 8.1.1 and 8.2)
    - deleted preferences
    - rebuilt library
    - repaired permissions
    - used DiskWarrior to rebuild directory
    - re-installed OS X (archive and install)
But it's still crashing after all of that. It doesn't crash when playing mp3 or AAC files from my iTunes library, but it's crashing almost half the time I try to play a CD.
Any ideas of what might be going wrong or what else I might try?
Looking in the console log, the crash generally seems to be either a segmentation fault or a bus error.
Here's what I think are the relevant portions of some of the iTuunes crash logs:

More crashes... One other time it crashes that I didn't mention above is when I insert an audio CD that I haven't played before. iTunes queries CDDB and then crashes pretty consistently. That and when a CD finishes playing are probably the most common, though it sometimes crashes in the middle of playing a CD (often when I've just done something else, such as editing information for some tracks in my library).
Not that anyone seems to be paying attention to this thread, but here's some more crash log excerpts. I'm noticing that most of my crashes are happening on thread 0 at 0x00003bd5 0x1000 + 11221, though there are a few on other threads (though thread 0 also seems to be at 0x00003bd5 0x1000 + 11221, even though it's not the thread that crashed)
The most common error I'm getting is a segmentation fault:

  • ITunes 7.5 - major bug with playing cds! ?

when i play cds and deselect tracks, i often get spinning wheels that freeze itunes and make me force quit. it happens with both cd drives, and with a dozen different cds, all brand new.
this only happens with 7.5. if i use 7.4.2, it never ever happens. and it never happened with any itunes version before 7.5. it also happened with 10.4.8 and itunes 7.5 before i upgraded to 10.4.11.
the thing is, it only seems to happen right when i deselect the track on a cd, and usually at the very end of the track. this is quite unusual, but i've got it to reproduce very consistently.
try unchecking say, tracks 1-3 on a cd, then on track 4, uncheck it as it's playing at the last few seconds of the track, like at 2 seconds left. if it doesnt happen, re-select it and try again, and if not then leave it unchecked and try the same thing on track 5.
i cant use 7.5 b/c of this bug.
    thanks

ha, yeah i see that - thank you! yours sounds like the same problem. i cant believe nobody else posted about this. it happens on every cd! and apple tech support today said they had no knowledge of this problem. the itunes techie couldnt test it out on his end b/c he said they are prohibited from having cds at work. this is insane considering that playing cds is a major function of itunes, so how is itunes tech support supposed to diagnose cd related problems when they dont have any cds!!? jeez

  • Itunes 10.2.1 crashing with windows XP

We have downloaded itunes 10.2.1 on to our PC with windows XP. It just crashes whole computer.
Did the same with 10.1.1; removed the program and reloaded 10.2.1 but still crashes.
    Any suggestions?

Can you describe what happens when your computer crashes.
Do you see any error message, if so give the error message in full.
Does the computer freeze so you ahve to restart, or do you get a blue screen stop.
If you get a blue screen, can you give the error numbers. Also if any file is mentioned in the error give that too.
If the computer just freezes with not error message, look in you Event Viewer after restarting to see if there was an error message there.
Does Quicktime work normally, or does that crash too?

  • ITunes 7.1.1 crashes with dial-up

I am getting frequent crashed when using iTunes (with a music CD) and my dial-up. I can’t pinpoint whether the problem is with the ISP, iMac, iTunes, or Mac OS X, so I’m starting with the iTunes forum first.
There are 2 problems with I use iTunes while connected via dial-up. Either 1) the whole screen dims and a dialog box comes up asking me to restart the company or 2) the internet connection is dropped.
When I already have iTunes opened and a music CD in my computer, I connect to my ISP, then when I go to get the song titles using the menu choice in iTunes, the connection drops. More frequently though is that after the song titles are retrieved, I eject the CD, then the connection dropped, this happens every time.
When I’m already connected, I insert a CD, iTunes should automatically opened (as I set that in prefereces), but it takes a while and the color ball spins, then less than a minute later, the screen dims and the restart dialog box appears. I notice that the disc is mounted on the desktop but not showing up in iTunes.
I’ve spoken to my ISP and not surprisingly, they have no clue to this situation. Hope someone can help.

  • Safari 3.2.1 crashes with older Pithhelmet: upgrade PH to 2.8.4

I upgraded OS X to 10.5.5 a while back, but I stayed back on Safari 3.1.X for a while without trouble, until yesterday. In the first few hours after several restarts, Safari 3.2.1 would crash a lot. I could crash it repeatedly at, say, Apple site (menu Apple->mac OS X Software) and several others. Looking at the console logs, there were malloc-related complaints about an access to memory that had earlier been "freed," segment violations, and finally "bus error" when Safari crashed. Consistent on all the failure logs.
Per the other threads here, I tried the "turn off warning of potential bad sites" in Safari->Preferences->Security. This did not fix.
I tried a Apple phone support call, (ticket 112860855), and we tried the "Fix disk permissions" file system repair, also mentioned on threads here. We tried a sandbox "test" account. There were permission "things" that got "fixed" but still crashed in my first five minutes of using Safari 3.2.1 after restart.
Then I noticed PithHelmet shareware had a note on their site for a new release to fix crashes on Safari 3.2. I've updated PithHelmet and thus far, an hour of use with no crashes. So folks, are you using PithHelmet, and have you updated?

    Hi
Go back to the other thread as I have added a comment about the Tab problem.
Regarding Concierge, this Safari add-on was last modified in 2006 (have a look here - the link to the developer's site no longer works).
As Safari evolves, add-ons have to maintain their software code consistent with Safari's evolving software code. Safari 3.2.1 must have introduced a change triggering the incompatibility; hence, the crash.
Glad this was easy to sort out (iBod has the eagle "software" eye. )

  • Itune 8 installs but crashes with BEX error

    Problem signature:
I am getting this when running itune 8 in 32 bit vista home preminum.
It works however when run in xp Sp2 compatibility mode.
7.7.1 was working before in vista before the upgrade so it's not problem with other softwares.
Can't believe 8.0 still has vista problem...it's like we are beta testing for apple. If the software is not ready for prime time, please change the release date and fix it instead of rushing it like that of "ME" mess out there.
Now I am not even sure if I want to isntall my iphone 2.1 that might also brick my phone.
This is a strange problem since the same itune 8 install and runs fine in my office computer with xp sp3 and my dell laptop with vista also.

  • Itunes 11.1.5 crashes with ntdll.dll error

After trying everything it seems I could find on the discussion groups about this error, I finally managed to solve it on my machine.  Win 7 64 bit...
I turned off error reporting which was creating the minidump file. (Set it to none).  It makes no sense but now I can make it through a sync without itunes crashing...

In Windows 7.  Control Panel/System/Advanced system settings/Startup and Recovery Settings/
Leave Write an event to the system log checked and Automatically restart, unchecked, and where it says Write debugging information, choose (none),  then OK at the bottom.

  • ITUNES FAILS TO IMPORT OLDER CDS AND FREEZES

HI ALL--FIRST TIME POSTING LONG TIME READER!
As the description heading indicates, my itunes has started failing to import older cds and hten freezes up? Anyway to circumvent this? How do i import these cds--should i burn same first to a nwer CDR? Please advise. Is this a common problem?

You are getting the opposite of my problem. For me, newer CDs give problems not older ones. There are several options available. No particular order, not all options.
Import as mp3 with another program. (Rip with another program, import with iTunes)
    Update drivers for current drive.
    Replace drive.
    Uninstall then reinstall iTunes/Quicktime.
    New computer. :-}

  • Itunes 10.5 crashes with no error when trying to play any music, video, or import/scan from the library folder on the compter with Windows 7 Pro.

Fresh install with all older itunes un-installed as well as other Apple software.
Now cannot get any songs, videos, or even scan library folder for songs to work on the computer.
itunes just simply crashes with no error comments.
This is itunes 10.5 on a Windows 7 Pro system.

Same here, though on XP. Have tried cleaning registry, reinstalling, deleting preferences. Created a new user with no library and I have the problem there, too, so it's not the library.
Is there no one to call about this??

  • Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

    Requirements for iPhone 5:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    iTunes 10.7 or later
The highest version of iTunes you can install is 10.6.3 which will not sync with the iPhone 5.
    Roger Wilmut1 wrote:
It's always a good idea to check the requirements before purchasing.
The person I spoke with at 1-800-MY-APPLE gave me totally different info...she said the iPhone 5 would in fact sync with the older version of iTunes and that I could restore from my previous iPhone 4 backup and also bring in my music that way.  Hmmm....
I'm inclined to go by the published specs, but now I have to jump thru a bunch of hoops I wasn't expecting to.

  • ITunes won't connect to iTunes Store with my Apple ID and repeatedly crashes with "An unknown error occurred (-50)."

I've been unable to use iTunes for over 3 weeks now.
Initially, it would prompt me to Sign In with my Apple ID and password each time it tried to start, and when I clicked Sign In, it'd respond with variations of:
"Your device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance."
        or
        De-authorize/Authorize.
Frustrated, I'd click Cancel, and it'd crash with:
        "An unknown error occurred (-1008)."
        or
        "An unknown error occurred (-50)."
More recently, I don't even get the Sign In prompt any more. iTunes now just crashes immediately with unknown error (-50) as soon as it tries to start.
It is clear that this issue has more to do with the Apple ID than with iTunes specifically, because some of the apps I purchased directly from the App Store (OmniFocus, Fantastical and Forismatic) now prompt me to Sign In with my Apple ID and password each time they try to start, and they never did before. And when I try to sign, they respond with the error:
"Your device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance."
Apparently, this is an issue a whole lot of people are experiencing, judging by the long list of Google search returns on the subject; but I'm yet to find a definitive, "official" Apple solution to the problem.
My Apple ID is the same as it's always been.
If anyone knows what's really causing this and/or can offer a fix, please H-E-E-E-L-P? I'll even pay to make it go away. I abandoned Windows after 26 years, only to discover that no platform is spared the blackhole of unknown errors.
