hi audape!
first quickly check on these two issues:
iPod not recognized and Windows Device Manager is empty
Strange iPod behavior when Windows confuses iPod with network drive
... but if no joy with those, try steadily working through this document:

  • ITunes 12 does not detect my iPod nano

    Hi there, please help!
6th generation iPod Nano is not detected in iTunes 12.0.1.26 BUT does show up in Finder (OS X Yosemite 10.10).
iPod 4 IS detected in iTunes.
I use my iPod a lot and would love to be able to update it! I have already searched for an answer and tried various solutions but to no avail so far.
    Many thanks.

Have just plugged in an old 1st generation iPod Touch - this is also detected by iTunes, just NOT the Nano

  • ITunes does not detect my iPod-- please read and help?!

I tried all the help Apple told me to do. I reset my iPod(didn't work) and then I downloaded the newest version of iTunes. That didn't work either. My iTunes still does not detect my iPod. The newly downloaded iTunes was at least supposed to tell me that my iPod was "corrupted" but it didn't. So... I'm not sure that it is. But that is the only reason Apple tells you could cause this. So yeah, I'm pretty lost right now! Does anybody know anything to help(by the way, I own a 5th generation iPod nano)? Thanks

Take a look at this web page and see if it helps. Some of the suggestions are ones you say you've already tried, but there are other suggestions, one of which may help:

I'm not certain I understand the problem: have you re-installed iTunes 6 and now are unable to purchase iTunes Store music?
I have an iPod Mini and have used it flawlessly with iTunes 7 on both a G5 iMac and a G4 Cube under 10.4.7, so "incompatibility" is not the issue here.
iTunes 6.0.5 indeed does continue to allow iTunes Store music purchases...if your problem persists, get back to us here with more info!

It sounds like you are not able to see any iOS devices in iTunes on your PC. I recommend the following article to help you troubleshoot that named:

  • ITunes does not detect my ipod

Much to my chagrin I made the mistake of upgrading Windows Vista to Windows 7. Then I d/l the latest version of iTunes and now iTunes can not detect my iPod. I receive the message "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install iPod's software."
I have completely unistalled iTunes numerous times and then ran into issues attempting to reinstall. I attempted to change the registry key which did not work so had to install Windows 7 again to fix issues.
When I run the iTunes diagnostics it tells me I have 2 issues:
    1. iTunes Helper is not running
    2. No iPhone or iPod found
I have attempted all the suggestions that come up in the help section for "iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes". I am hoping that someone out there can help me. I am going insane trying to fix this issue and am cursing myself for jumping on the Windows 7 bandwagon. At least I had all the Windows Vista issues figured out and my computer actually worked.

    Does anyone have any ideas????

  • ITunes 10 does not detect my iPhone

i recently upgraded to itunes 10, and i have a 1st gen iphone. after upgrading, i synced my iphone and everything went fine. soon after that, i had a totally unrelated hard disk drive failure. luckily all my data were backed up, apple replaced my hard disk, and i restored all my data. however, when i tried to connect my iphone to itunes to sync, itunes would not detect the iphone. i tried many fixes, the only one that worked was to reinstall itunes 10 (which is a pain, because you have to get rid of lots of files.) last night, after reinstalling itunes 10, i connected my iphone and itunes detected it and synced. i thought the issue was solved for good and maybe was related to the restoring of the backed up data. however, i just tried to sync again, but the problem has re-appeared. my itunes does not detect my iphone.
the console message i get is as follows:
9/7/10 3:56:17 PM usbmuxd[30] connect_toport (thread 0x100581000): Could not connect to USB mux port 32498 for device 2: Connection refused

i thought that usbmuxd is built for linux, but is it doing in itunes 10? but it must belong to it, because i also got this (i think when booting, but i am not sure):
    9/7/10 3:33:40 PM com.apple.usbmuxd[30] usbmuxd-201 built for iTunesTen on Aug 12 2010 at 17:33:03, running 64 bit
what is going on? i don't want to reinstall the **** itunes every time i have to sync. any solution? thanks

  • Itunes 10.5 does not detect my ipod touch

I recently update my itunes to 10.5 and when I connect my Ipod touch to my computer Ituens will not detected. My Ipod will show up on my computer but not on Itunes. Any ideas how can I fix this???
I try restaring my Ipod, REinstalling Itunes but nothing work.. HELP PLEASE!!!!

    - Try moving the existing backup file to a safe location so iTunes has to create an entire new file.  It is located here:
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory.
    - Directly download and install the iOS 5 using the information here:
iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download

  • ITunes does not detect iPhones/iPods - tried everything

Okay, so 2 months ago I got my new Macbook Pro 17". iTunes wouldn't detect my iphone or any other iphone. I tried everything suggested on these forums (hopefully not true), but couldn't get it to work. I gave up and was hoping some sort of itunes update would solve it. Well itunes has been updated and even the OS has been updated to Snow Leopard. It didn't help
I am willing to try anything you suggest, so please keep them coming. Really want to get this sorted now.
Thanks so much for all your help.

Great to hear you have resolved the problem. I am running Tiger 10.4.7 not your 10.6.1 which I beleive is Leopard which I cannot update to as my computer is not suitable. Have you heard if anyone with my OS version has had success. I have tried removing iTunes v9 and then downloading v8.2.1, however I am still unable to gat iTunes to open when I connect my iPhone and iTunes does not acknowledge the connection in the side bar.
    Suggestions please.

  • Updater does not detect my ipod.

I plug in my ipod, but the updater does not recognize it. It doesn't do anything. When I try to go through the menus of my Ipod it gives me a folder with and exclaimation point. I have tried everything they have suggested and nothing seems to work. Am I supposed to Manually install it or something? I just bought it and when I tried to restore it, it took 2 hours and nothing happened so I unplugged it and now it will not respond or detect it again.

    If you haven't already...
Put the iPod into disk mode then attempt to restore it (link below)

  • ITunes 11 does not detect my iPhone 5

I recently downloaded iTunes 11 on my MacBook Pro and it is not detecting my iPhone 5 (running on iOS 6.0.1) and consequently, not allowing me to sync. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

    Hey Sarah,
So I was having the same issue. iPhone 5 on iTunes 11. iPhone wouldn't come up on iTunes 11 on a new MBA (less than a week old), or even iPhoto! So after reading many forums and trying many things this finally did the job:
Quit all your applications, turn off the mac and deselect the button that says reopen windows when log back in so that is not ticked:
Then restart the computer. Your iPhone should now come back on iTunes as visible when you relaunch iTunes or iPhoto and reconnect it.
Hope this helps you, it would of saved me hours had I read this sooner.
    Yeison
