ITunes 6 - Splitting the library over two drives

Hi,
I have a powerbook with a 60gb hardrive. Currently my music library is around 25gb. To add to the "damage" I have recently trasfered around 15gb of music from my old desctop to the external drive. Now the external drive has more then enough space for the music but the internal does not. Is it possible to split the library such that some songs are on the internal and some on the external, and if so will it cause iTunes to perform worse?
Thanks for your help,
Stanislav Jidkov

  • Splitting a library across two drives?

I'm running out of space on my 2tb external drive which is solely for iTunes.
Can I buy a second 2tb drive and split the library across both? I was thinking I would just change the default library location to the new drive so new itunes content is downloaded there and it would still be able to access the old stuff in the old location.
Alternatively do I need to buy a larger capacity drive to keep it all together in one place.
Obviously I would prefer to split it as a second 2tb drive would give me 4tb in total for less than a new 3tb drive if I had to consolidate.
If any of this is relevent to the question iTunes is the latest version on a 2010 iMac running Snow Leopard and we watch the content on Apple TV.
    Many thanks
    Anthony

  • ITunes library on two drives?

Is it possible to run iTunes with a split library on two drives? i.e. TV shows on one and music on another. I have a laptop and run out of space. I also do not want an external drive since I am not mobil anymore. Any idea? Bye

Move the content you want on the second drive to it manually, delete it from iTunes, open the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences, verify it's set not to copy content to the iTunes Music folder when it's added to the library, and import it from the second drive.

  • New iMac itunes not recognizing library on external drive

I'm trying to move my itunes media from my older powermac to my new imac. I kept my library on an external drive, so I thought it would be simple to just move that drive over to the new imac and create a path in the media folder location in itunes preferences to the library. I've done so, but the library is not registering in the new itunes. Obviously I'm doing something wrong here, and I haven't found anything that describes my exact scenario. All I'm doing is keeping the external drive on which the library and contents are stored and moving it from the old computer to the new.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Peter

Thanks Jim. I have tried what you have suggested, but it hasn't worked. iTunes isn't populating (for lack of a better word at the moment) with my music. I'm able to select the library and seemingly iTunes accepts the library, but I'm not able to access the media. I tried reconnecting the drive back to the old computer to make sure iTunes worked on it, and it worked fine. I'm stumped.

  • Split iPhoto Library into two?

If one has an iPhoto Library that is too large to burn to a CD (or DVD), is it possible to split the iPhoto Library into two libraries?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

I used this method of duplicating the library, renaming, and then deleting appropriate rolls from the two resulting libraries. After doing so, however, my iPhoto applicaton developed some nasty quirks. First, it would not let me rename my rolls. Secondly, it would on occasion unespectedly quit. I do not know if this was a result of my duplicating/splitting libraries, or just bad karma. I tried correcting it by copying back my original iPhoto library from a backup volume, with no results. I repaired permissions, repaired disk, and ran DiskWarrior with no results. Finally, I booted from a cloned drive, checked that iPhoto worked properly on my clone, and then copied the iPhoto library from the clone to my main hard drive, and all was well. So, now I have a working iPhoto, but am stuck with my original large library. As I said, this may have just been an unpleasant coincidence, but I am afraid to attempt to split the library again.

  • Why are there so many more choices on the USA iTunes Store? Surely having an iTunes account should let you access all itunes availability the world over? Also how do you request films/tv series to the UK itunes?

Why are there so many more choices on the USA iTunes Store? Surely having an iTunes account should let you access all itunes availability the world over?
Also how do you request films/tv series to the UK itunes? There's tv series I'd like but they're incomplete like The Batman & Xena Warrior Princess. And films theta aren't available for download but you can purchase in a store like HMV?  Apple isn't doing itself any favours by secluding countries by their store. They'd make billions if you could just select the iTunes Store you want to search & purchase from just by signing in! If anything what they're doing is putting themselves into a corner, other companies like Samsung & HTC are already on too of them for innovation & ease of use. The people they're attracting are predominantly existing Apple users not new customers. What do you guys think?

It's not Apple's choice, they can only sell a particular item where the content provider/rights-holder has granted them a license to sell them. Content is licensed by the rights-holders to Apple on a country-by-country basis, each country therefore has to have its own store, and you have to be in a country to use its store - they want control over where their content is available.
You can try requesting that an item be added to the UK store via this page, but unless the rights-holder agrees to then Apple won't be able to sell it here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html

  • Splitting the Company into Two Entities

Our company is currently using SAP ECC, SAP SCM and SAP CRM. We have planned to split the company into two to manage the existing two different businesses in separate landscape. (i.e business A & B are operated under one company code). In future state, business A and B will be operated in separate landscapes.
Has anyone carried out similar company split activities in the past? What are the challenges encountered in such a large transformation program? What are the key points to be considered in such transformation?

    Hi,
That is one of the approach but it is very time consuming activity. Other thing I can suggest you to do the archiving of the data that is not required in the new landscape and then delete the data based on business process and other scenarios.

    hi BoJ,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
If you're referring to having an extended display , you will need to have an external monitor and enable extended mode by pressing the Winkey+P and select Extend.
If you want to split the screen to work with 2 documents or 2 windows at a time, you can snap the windows by pressing Winkey+ Left or Right arrow - check this article in reference.
    Hope this helps

  • How to split  the records into two parts

    Hi experts,
I have a field with 75 char length, this field have records also, Now i want to split the field into two differnt fields. That means upto first 40 char goes to one field, from 41st char to 70 char goes to another field, for that how to split record into two parts.
    Plz advice this,
    Mohana

    Hi,
    Do the following:
    f1 = fsource(40).
    f2 = fsource+40(30).
where fsource is the 70 character original string and target strings are f1 (length 40) and f2 (length 30).
    Cheers,

  • How do I import an iTunes library from an external drive if that drive has been simply removed from a dead computer, without prior measures being taken to ensure it is possible to transfer the library over?

Basically, my issue here is, I had a fully functioning iTunes on my previous Acer laptop which I used to store my music for my iPhone, I have over 2000 songs on this iTunes and as the laptop suddenly died due to motherboard failure, there was no way to follow out the instructions given by apple on how to properly transfer one iTunes library to another.
The only source of music I have comes from source files on the HDD, which, stupidly I chose to organise myself.
A large quantity of this music was deleted from the iTunes library but stayed on the HDD in the source folders (I do not know why)
By simply dragging my music folder from my HDD to a new iTunes, all the files do go over, however many of them are duplicated (due to 320>120 bit rate MP3 creations) and a number of them are simply not wanted.
Is there a way to transfer my old library straight into this new one? bearing in mind I have all the program files and everything that had iTunes running on my old computer stored onto this USB drive?
    Thank you!

When I have done this, all I did was network the two machines and copy the contents of the iTunes folder to the other machine, and that's it.
My understanding (which may not be 100% correct) is that the one file that is absolutely necessary is iTunes Library, and that the XML file is actually a copy auto-generated from the iTunes Library, appearing in a different format only for non-iTunes apps that take advantage of the iTunes Library data.
As far as I know, if you simply have the Library (database) file and all your original music files, iTunes on that computer should operate as it did on your old computer. I believe that the Album Artwork, Genius Data, and XML files can be regenerated from the Library file. Not sure about the Extras file.

  • SSD & HDD setup - knowing how to split OS & Apps + Docs over two drives

    Hi
I have a new 128GB SDD drive I want to use in my Mac as well as a SATAII 1TB hard drive I have already.  I already run Snow Leopard and Lion due to hardware not supported by Lion I still need to use.  As Mountain Lion is coming out soon, I have read about keeping the OS and Apps on an SDD drive and Data on a separate larger standard HDD (as much cheaper than an SSD is).
I use Lion for probably 90% of the time and Snow Leopard for the other 10%.
What would be the best way to do this.  I am happy to start off again with a clean install, only transferring the files I need from an external hard drive to my internal HD together with backed up emails etc.  I can't see why I would use Lion by the end of July when Mountain Lion is out, unless any of my other hardware is not supported by it.
If anyone has already done this or know of any websites with this info on, please let me know.  I have already checked a few websites, but not found the info I need.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Thanks Bill.  We see so many systems with a raid0 boot drive nowadays, I didn't even consider it to be an issue.  Noel Carboni on the Photoshop forum is proud of his multi drive SSD raid0 that he uses for _everything_, although Noel is only a Photoshop guy, and software engineer.  I also have an MSI laptop that came as standard with two SSDs in a raid0 for the boot drive (MSI GT70).
Regards recovery tools, I have Shadow Protect, but have not used its boot drive image feature up to now.  I don't know if that would cover me for a lost boot drive?
BTW  I have worked out how and when to install the drivers.  I am also committed to the two drives now, so just have to decide how to use them.

  • Split library between two drives

I'm sure this has been talked about but I couldn't find it. I have all my photos stored in the Aperture library. The Aperture library has out grown my 750GB drive. I want to add a seconded drive and have the library continue on that. How can I tell Aperture to continue on the seconded drive?
    Thanks

    Ian Wood wrote:
The images are always visible in Aperture whether they are referenced or managed. Basically, as long as the master files are online (the drive they are stored on is powered up and mounted) there is no practical difference inside Aperture between referenced and managed Masters.
I suggest you have a look through http://www.bagelturf.com/aparticles/ref/index.html for more info and pros/cons on referenced Masters.
Except for being able to back them up to an Aperture Vault. You'll need to backup your referenced files manually.
You didn't mention what kind of RAID you have. As long as you're backing up your Library, why not a larger concatenated RAID?

  • How do I stop iTunes copying the library to other computers?

I have an iMac and an MacBook Pro. I have my iTunes library on an external drive connected to the iMac. I don't want anything whatsoever in the iTunes library on my MBP, there's not enough space for it.
However, at some point in the past I have set up the two instances of iTunes so that whenever the MBP version detects that there's new stuff in the iMac version, it starts copying it over to it's own library. It does this for everything new that it detects - music, apps, video, the lot.
All I want to use iTunes on the MBP for is connecting to the iMac's library over the network and playing music that way. I don't want anything at all in the MBP iTunes library itself.
So, how do I stop this transfer process? What settings do I need to change, on which machines?
    Thanks,
    Owen

Why is it that I only work out what the problem is by typing out a question on the Discussion forums?
I went to my MBP iTunes and selected the iMac's iTunes icon in the sidebar on the left, then Settings on the bottom right, and turned off Automatic Import of everything.
    Done!
