Itunes 6 thinks 200gig Ext. HD is INSIDE the 30gig INTERNAL HD!

I know this sounds ridiculous but:
Tried to move 4.5 gigs of music over to a 200gig firewire external harddrive, but when ever I select "Consolidate Library," itunes gives me a "Not enough disk space" on INTERNAL DRIVE error, where "internal drive" is the name of my int. laptop harddrive.
I believe this is because the OSX path for an ext. hard drive is written like this:
INTERNAL HD:VOLUMES:EXTERNAL HD
I think Itunes 6 thinks the ext. hd is a volume INSIDE the int., and thus scanning the int. hd for space for enough space first. (But if I had enough space on the int. I wouldn't NEED to move the music!) What should I do? Do i just have to clear enough space on the int. hd to TRICK it into copying onto the ext.?
Powerbook G4 15 inch 1.67 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

In the end i was able to solve the problem. I'm not sure why this happened, or why it worked, so if someone who understands better than I does, please feel free to explain.
1) cleared off enough space on the int. hd to actually fit 2x the number of mp3s i had on it.
2) went to itunes, selected my ext hd as the new library place, and selected "consolidate."
3) this time no error msg, and the "consolidating" dialog. box came up, did its thing, and finished.
4) checked my ext. hd, and the files were there, but also noticed that avail. space on the int. hd was noticeably smaller. exactly as if duplicate copies of the mp3 files had also been copied onto the int. hd as well.
5) opened a shareware prog called FILE BUDDY that lets me see invisible files, and checked the int. hd. Sure enough, in a folder called "volumes" on the int. hd, there was a folder with the same name as the ext. hd, and in it were duplicates of all the mp3's. DELETED the duplicates using FILE BUDDY.
problem solved.
now i don't know much about unix boxes or OS stuff and am essentially a noob so i don't know if this is normal, but i noticed that this whole "referring to the ext. as a folder inside the int." started happening alot more when i re-formatted my ext. as MAC OS EXTENDED (journaled) (it had previously been a UNIX format, but used to have all kinds of much worse problems...)
Anyone know how or why this happens?
Oh, and spcl thanks to FILE BUDDY. (wish it had a longer trial period tho.)

  • I retned a movie from Itunes using my I phone; however, I can't see the movie listed under videos, nor does it appear in my I tunes library on my laptop.  on my itunes store app, there is a "1" inside the red dot that is blinking.

I rented a movie from Itunes on my Iphone; however, i can't find where to watch or view it.  The movie does not show up in my videos or movies yet ther is a blinking "1" in the red dot on my Itunes app on the bottom right of the screen over the "more" tab? any ideas on how to get to the movie?

ah, ok yes i did do that last night. I just did it again and relized that ther is a "Downloads" tab. I selected it and stated that there was a download error. I'm currently retrying it now. and it is now showing in my videos.
thanks for helping me focus a little more to get where I need to be.

  • ITunes is truncating enclosure URLs to 511 characters, but only inside the 'iTunes Store' panel

URLs for my audio and video files are usually about 600 characters long. Inside the <enclosure> of my podcast feeds, I use a shorter URL that redirects (HTTP 302) to the longer URL.
This normally works fine. I can add an RSS feed in Advanced > Subscribe to Podcast, and it works fine. I can find the podcast inside the iTunes store and subscribe to it, and that works fine also. iTunes manages the podcasts as expected, downloads new episodes, and plays them back without a problem.
What doesn't work is when I find the podcast inside the iTunes store and try to play the episodes right there instead of subscribing. On that page (you know the one, it shows the podcast title and info and lists the latest ten episodes) when I try to preview any episode by clicking the play button on that episode, it fails to play. This feature works for most podcasts, but not for the ones I'm publishing.
I've inspected my network traffic and found that iTunes is going to the shorter url and following the redirect as expected, but when it sends the second GET request, it only uses the first 511 bytes of the longer URL. I can only assume that this is because somewhere in the iTunes codebase, it's storing this URL value in a C string inside a 512 byte buffer and truncating anything that doesn't fit.
    I'm using iTunes 10.5 on OSX 10.6
Has anybody seen this before? Is there a workaround? Is there a version of iTunes that this doesn't happen in? Is it a known bug?

600 characters! I don't think I've ever seen an URL that long - though a bit of quick research shows that this question has been asked about browsers and apparently the maximum limit for IE7 was 2048 characters, though somebody testing this with IE8 found it could handle 4095 characters.
As to the iTunes Store, no-one in these forums would have any way of knowing whether there is an imposed limit in iTunes - only the programmers would know, and you know how secretive Apple is. If you are finding that long URLs fall over, then obviously you've hit a brick wall with it, and I don't see any change of it changing. I imagine you've already considered using a shorter URL, and are using a longer one for a reason, but in the end I doubt you have any option but to change your practice, as I would think the chance of Apple changing theirs is approaching nil.

  • Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple.  Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"

Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple.  Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"
I moved my iTunes library to my external hard drive some time ago and I followed the directions listed here on the apple support page.  It did copy my library and now is on my hard drive... I can open iTunes and use it to sync all of my devices but I would like to play my music... I can see all of my music files but can not play them if I click on an album or song it says the following:  "(file name) could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"  I click locate but do not know where to go from there?  I need a way to access all files and not to hunt down one at a time on my hard drive... I am pretty sure I deleted the original library to make space on my internal drive which was the reason for moving it.  I have tried and tried to fix it and do not have a lot of time to do so with a one and two year old at my house who do not like it whenI sit down at my computer.  What to do???  Any help is much appreciated!!!

See Make a split library portable. Move all of the bits of the library together in the the correct shape and it should work. Or undo exactly what you did and then start over.
If you're a former Windows user don't try merging two folders together that have the same name by dropping one into the same folders as the other, as that goes badly on a Mac.

  • ITunes Library on one ext. HD, used by two computers -- is it possible ?

I "dittoed" my iTunes folder to an external FW hard disk. I then changed the location of the "iTunes Music" folder in the Preferences->Advanced. This worked OK for the original user (user "A") that built the library. For other users on the same computer, it only works if I share the library of user A.
Now I thought, if I hook the FW HD to another, regularly authorized Mac, I should be able to use the very same library, at least as a shared library. Alas, no dice. The second computer has no music. If I change the location of the iTunes Music folder for any user, nothing happens. If I turn on "look for shared library" nothing happens either -- well that's expected because the library is supposed to be shared by the other computer, which is off.
So, it's there any way around? I would like to listen to the same music on the two computers, which I use for different purposes, without replicating and synchronizing the library all the time.
    Thanks!

Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447
On your OTHER computer, same thing. Plug in the external hard drive, open using the above instructions and point to the external drive to start using it from that location.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • Tricking iTunes into thinking an external hard drive is an iPod?  Possible?

    Hi
There is a lot of info out there about using your iPod as a hard drive, but I am wanting to the opposite, namely use my external portable hard drive as an iPod (this says something of my contrary nature).
The reason being that my iTunes library is made up of Apple Lossless files, and I would like to take advantage of the "convert higher bit rate songs to 128kbps" feature in iTunes, but by syncing to a portable external hard drive rather than an iPod.
I am aware that there are various methods of converting all my Apple Lossless files for use on an external hard drive, but none of these (as far as I am aware) synchronize with iTunes (i.e. update tags/ratings in the converted files if changes are made in iTunes). Because I would need this feature, I am wondering if there is a way of tricking iTunes into thinking that my external hard drive is an iPod (here my devious nature comes to the fore), or some other method of achieving what I am looking for?
    Thanks for reading
    Nick

I just need my 128kbps tracks to be updated if changes are made in iTunes, such as tag changes, rating changes, tracks being deleted, new tracks being added.
When you play the ALAC songs or change ratings and such, you want to sync that info to the 128 songs on the external?
And wen you add/remove anything from the internal, you want those to be converted/added to the external?
Absolutely no idea how this could be accomplished.

  • I think we should have been given the option to move books from iTunes to iBooks. All mine were downloaded CD booklets and inserts which were in their right place in iTunes. What do others think?

I think we should have been given the option to have our books moved from iTunes to iBooks. All mine were CD booklets and inserts downloaded with the CDs, and the obvious place for them was in iTunes. As it is now, I can no longer use my own convention for naming, sorting etc. The sort facility in iBooks does not work. What do others think?

  • How do I trick iTunes into thinking imported songs are purchased?

MOST of my library is imported, and I really bugs me when when I can't listen to it in the store, only in my library. So I was wondering if there was any way to trick iTunes into think it is.
I am running ios 7.1.1 on an iPod 5 16gb.

Subscribe to iTunes Match.  Every song in your library will be either matched or uploaded.  Then you will be able to listen to all your music from the Cloud.

I copied this from an extremely knowledgable iTunes for Windows user in another discussion. Maybe this will help.
In Windows, you can restore much of the look & feel of iTunes 10.7 with these shortcuts:
ALT to temporarily display the menu bar
CTRL+B to show or hide the menu bar
CTRL+S to show or hide the sidebar
CTRL+/ to show or hide the status bar (won't hide for me on Win XP)
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit (iTunes) > Preferences > Store anduntick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
If you don't like having different coloured background & text in the Album (Grid) view use Edit(iTunes) > Preferences > General and untick Use custom colours for open albums, movies, etc.
With iTunes 11.0.3 you can enable artwork in the Songs and playlist views from View > Show View Options (CTRL+J) making it more like the old Album List view.
If you are a Mac user, all you have to do is start navigating through the menu items at the top of the screen to find just about everything that is mentioned here.

  • ITunes sometimes 'thinks' the iPod is corrupted

iTunes sometimes thinks the iPod is corrupted. But it only thinks so if I connect the iPod WHILE itunes is running. If I connect the iPod and then start iTunes there isn't a problem. Or if the message below appears I can click OK.. stop itunes, restart itunes and then iTunes can see the the iPod just fine.
    http://codethought.com/images/itunesfailmsg.png
I've tried reformatting the iPod - same thing. I've also flushed my OS installation out.. reinstalled OS X from scratch.. and the problem went away... until today. Now the problem is back.
Any thoughts on how to determine what the root cause might be, or how to diagnose it?

I am having the same problem with my old iPod. I just bought a new iPod an hour ago and same thing.

  • I bought an itunes card thinking i can make a purchase through the steam app, is there a way i can make a ummm, how do i say it?... transfer or trade the $60 of the $75 i have?

    Please help me!!!!
I was suppose to buy a steam card but the walmart near me didnt have it, but i got itunes instead thinking i can make a purchase a game through steam, please help me...

iTunes gift cards can only be used to buy content from the iTunes store, app store, Mac app store and iBookstore. They can't be used with the steam store, and Apple (for info these are user-to-user forums) don't give refunds for gift cards - you could try taking the card back to the store that you bought it from (assuming that you haven't redeemed or scratched the silver strip off the card) and see if they will refund you, or (if it's not been redeemed) do you know anybody that you could sell it to ?

  • ITunes store shows "accessing iTunes store..." for few seconds and after that its blank with an apple logo inside the status bar.

    Hi,
I have recently installed iTunes latest version (10.5.1.42) on Win XP SP3.
The problem is, when accessing iTunes, It connects to the internet, I can sign in (It shows my username in sign in bar), But nothing is shown in the iTunes store window in iTunes. It shows "accessing iTunes store..." for few seconds and after that its blank with an apple logo inside the status bar.
    ANU SUGGESSION???

Sorry, no. The screen image you see is specifically saying you need to connect it to a computer. You could take it to an Apple retailer for help.
