ITunes 6, WinXP, port 5353

my iTunes insists on trying to access port 5353 every so often, no matter what I do. I've gone through the iTunes preferences three times now, disabling anything having anything to do with network traffic, and still failing. I have disabled sharing my music, accessing other people's shared music, stupid apple wlan speakers that only work with iTunes, and disabled pod casts, I couldn't care less about them. It seems the macs in my network are bombarding my machine, too, with the same annoying feature. Oh well.
How do I tell iTunes not to try to access that network port, ever, for any reason? By uninstalling it? If the options are either uninstall or blocking it permanently from my software fire wall, I rather uninstall it and find a software that does what I tell it to, and nothing else. Too bad that probably means I have to throw away my 40GB iPod, but that's life.

Yes, I saw that 5353 was used for Bonjour/music sharing. However I have uninstalled that service...iTunes keeps using it, though.
(apologies, working from potentially-unreliable memory here, filtered through a lack of basic understanding of the technology ... most of the Snoop Dogg and toonz posts i saw on this have been in threads deleted recently.)
my understanding is that all itunes versions with music sharing apart from 5.0.0.35 contained a cut-down "internal" version of the Bonjour/Rendevous technology. 5.0.1.4 reverted back to the version of the internal service used by 4.9.
so i figure that 4.9 version of the internal service (or something similar) is still going on with 6.0.x.

  • Firewall blocking mDNSResponder data port 5353 on office network

    Hi All,
Is there a way to allow mDNSResponder through the firewall???
I had a similar problem a while back and during one startup the firewall asked if I wanted to allow mDNSResponder and I said yes. But now the window does not come up. I have added itunes to the list of specific apps which also include: Safari.app, ntpd, Executor.app, LogMeIn.app, nmblookup, nmbd, krb5kdc, qmasterd, NetAuthAgent.app, iPhoto.app, Screen Sharing.app, RealPlayer.app and quitTime Player.app.
    Am I missing something?
It seems to be related to port 5353 being blocked by my apple firewall set at "Set acess for specific services and applications". As you can see below it is doing it for my computer and others
May 13 09:54:58 Jim-Mols-Computer Firewall[52]: Deny mDNSResponder data in from 192.168.1.64:5353 uid = 0 proto=17 [my computer address on the network]
May 13 09:48:56 Jim-Mols-Computer Firewall[52]: Deny mDNSResponder data in from 192.168.1.90:5353 uid = 0 proto=17 [another computer in the building]
I can see where the firewall would might block other computers but am I to assume my computer is trying to talk to itself and being denied?
    Thanks for your ideas
More stuff below that I don't understand:
    May 13 09:54:58 Jim-Mols-Computer Firewall[52]: Deny mDNSResponder data in from fe80::20a:95ff:fe9c:7800:5353 uid = 0 proto=17

Well, it wasn't blocking anything (other than Bonjour) to begin with, so what's the diff? If your Mac gets taken over, it will be via one of those many server apps you are running for which you've punched holes in your firewall. But if you remove them from the firewall, they don't work. So what is the point of the firewall again?

That screen is asking you to connect the device to iTunes to restore it.

Do just like the diagram indicates:  connect your phone to your computer, open iTunes on the computer and then restore.

  • Even after doing the recovery of my iphone 4,  still i am getting a picture with itunes and usb port in phone.  showing only the emergency call

I did a recovery of my iphone4.   After extracting,  recovery and verifying  completing,  my iphone restarted.    But still i can only see the picture with iTunes and USB port in the iphone 4.   Only the emergency call is allowed.
After recovery and re-start of my iphone4  the itunes doesn't detect my phone.       What should i do now

DFU Mode and restore again, if it doesn't work, well then...I suggest you try using a custom firmware maker (sn0wbreeze), NOT for the jailbreak, just to try and fix your phone.

  • Opening Firewall Port 5353 solves problems?!

    I found this by Google:
If you have tried to operate AirTunes with an Airport Express on a Windows XP PC with the firewall (or a third-party firewall) enabled, then you will realise you have problems.
Rather than disable the firewall, you can just open port 5353 and all will work fine.
Having said that if you have router with NAT and DHCP this acts as a hardware firewall and computers on your internal network do not need software firewalls. Though some people like them for security and to stop unauthorised (ie spyware) outgoing connections.

I thought I recognised my own writing...
Opening port 5353 in the Windows XP Firewall to enable an XP PC with SP1 to configure the Airport Express and use AirTunes
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/2005.html
Principles are virtually the same for XP SP2

  • ABSEn automatically maps Port 5353 UDP to internal computer without asking?

I only have a single port map to an internal computer. It is something like:
    Port 60000 WAN 65.123.456.789 -> Port 22 LAN 192.168.1.200
Looking at the AEBSn logs however I see something like this:
    Feb 10 20:55:10 Severity:5 Binding added for udp, 65.123.456.789:5353 to 192.168.1.200:5353 with lifetime 3600
I know that Port 5353 is for Bonjour, but why would it map to an internal machine if I have not explicitly told it to do so? Or am I misunderstanding the log?

The log is not showing a port map.
The log is showing only the communication between the AEBSn to the remote computer.
Port 5353 is not mapped to the remote computer.

  • How do I fix Apple TV/iTunes Sync issue (port 3689)

I am having a port 3689 issue, I looked through all the other topics on it here, seems common, I only just bought my Apple TV unit and thinking about returning it, the guy from Apple support tried his best but still no fix.
iTunes says port 3689 is blocked, I have tried the following to rectify
    1) Opened up port 3689 and 5353 on the modem
    2) connected the Apple TV box directly to the Netcomm modem avoiding the wireless network
    3) Called apple for assistance
    4) disabled my firewall completely
    5) re-instated the firewall and opened up ports in the firewall itself as a rule
After all this still says it's blocked.
    Any other ideas?
    Please help

I had the same problem. I tuned off the firewall, rebooted computer, unplugged the router and turned off AppleTV, then I turned them all back on.
    Then it works fine.
If I do all that but leave the firewall on, AppleTV syncs correctly the first time iTunes is loaded. After that I get the error and need to either turn off iTunes or simply reboot the computer and the sync goes back to working (again, first time only).
While it it definitely seems like a firewall issue, it seems to be a problem within iTunes/AppleTV and I doubt there is a way it can be fixed permanently by managing the ports (i.e. wait for the next update for the real fix).

  • Port 5353 : how to open it?

    Hi,
Bought one of the first ATV. Impossible to connect, not even through direct Ethernet. No show in iTunes under "device". IPod works fine, iTMS too (I buy a lot of music), ATV goes to iTMS fine through Wi-Fi acces. I have 2 Macs : iMac and Macbook. None sees ATV. Went through tons of posts. Nothing helped.
Finally gave ATV to a Windows friend. He switches it on ang gets it IMMEDIATELY in iTunes for WXP. No fuss, nothing, just as in the manual. We share a Wi-Fi network, the same. Same subnet. He did through DHCP. No MAC adressing.
I scanned my ports again and saw that my 5353 was not LISTENing. How to open it? Firewall is disabled, no anti-virus, no NetBarrier, nothing. Music is shared (I see it with the Macbook and the iMac sees the shared Macbook music).
So, I am lost. The 5353 thing is the last chance. But the most difficult to bear is that Windows did it with no trouble.
Thanks and sorry for such a long post.
    Alex
Macbook Intel iMAc intel ATV (not connecting)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I install all updates through automatic update. So, I guess it just can't be a wrong version. And I DL'd and tried to install the version you kindly mention in your post. Everything works, I do not have even the slightest problem with both Macs. My .Mac account works fine, my syncing with all my 3 cell phones (Nokia, Motorola, SonyEricsson) work perfectly. IPod works great, Sony cam works great, 3 brands of digital camera connect fine.
In fact, everything is fine. My only problem is the ATV.
    Sorry to unpack it again:
    - Mac OS X 10.4.9 installed with auto update
    - All security updates and all firmwares and Apple updates
    - iTunes 7.1.6
    - Firewall disabled
    - All services opened
    - No NetBarrier
    - No Third party software (except some widgets)
    - ATV works fine with a windows PC on the same router
    - I have only one subnet
    - I can ping it from my Mac
    - ATV can connectr to iTunes
    - When I plug an ethernet cable (working) nothing happens.
    - iTunes music shared
    - My Macbook sees and plays music from the iMAC and vice versa
    - Searching for ATV checked
Once again, it works with WXP faultlessly, with DHCP settings. It connected quicker than a bear disappears on a hot day.
Thank you for any idea, because I am stuck. I feel that it is something easy, but can't find it.
Many thanks to all following this thread.

  • Ipad 2 cant get it to shut down, itunes logo and port on screen

i went to upadate my settings, and it told me i didnt have enough space to download IOS 7, then it locked and a iTunes screen appeared on screen with a picture of port plug, now i cant get it to shut down ive tried the home button and the shut down button, nothing works. when the screen goes black, for a minute the Apple logo comes up then goes off and the iTunes and port plug come back.

The image means that the iPad has gone into recovery mode - you will need to connect it to your computer's iTunes, that should recognise the iPad and allow you to reset it back to factory defaults, and you can then restore/resync your content to it. Whilst it's in recovery mode you might not be able to turn it off (I'm not sure whether it's possible or not)

  • When starting iTunes (for WinXP) and go to Store, crashes with R6002

As the subject says, when I try to start iTunes on this WinXP machine, and it is set to go to the store (or I start it otherwise, and then choose to go to the store) it crashes (freezes) and gives a R6002 floating point support not loaded error... I tried this on an identical machine (Compal CY25) (the wife's) and worked fine (in fact I had to use her computer to register my iPhone!).
ANy one else had this, have ideas? I have searched the internet to no avail (other then a bunch of MS garbly-goop for C++ programmers). HELP...

Well, since I have gotten a whole zero of replies, I will add this: It now works with the latest version of iTunes. Sooooo, whether a known problem or not, it is now fixed. "never mind"

  • Possible? iTunes on WinXP via wirelessrouter to Airport Xpress?

Decided to buy an Airport Xpress, but before I do that, I was wondering if it will work with my setup:
WinXp environment, connected to a router (Netgear in this case) via cable or wireless.
Want to use Xpress to use iTunes to my stereo and possibly connect other PCs to the xpress (don't want to pull cables...).
Can't find an faq - if there is, sorry, jsut point me to it.
    Thanks

Yes! you can use your Airport Express in a Windows environment using a netgear wireless router.
The key to set up is to turn off any encrytption on your wirless router and then search via the Airport software for your airport express. Then configure your Airport express to match your security settings. Then re-enable your security setting on your router. When you reboot your Airport Express, it should then be connected to your wireless network.

  • ITunes for WinXP  on network....

    The setup....
I am an IT tech for a public school district and I need some help. We use Novell, Windows XP (on HPs), and Deepfreeze. We setup a computer under one profile and then copy it's profile to the "default user" then freeze the computer. That way when any user logs in they get the settings of the Supervisor's profile.
    OK... now the problem....
We want to add iTunes and an iPod to one computer and then have anyone that logs onto that machine be able to the use one (same) library/database with the same iPod. I can create a "Thawed" drive so that music can be added to the library.
I tried this, but when ever a new user logs in, they get the iTunes usage agreement and it says the iPod is associated with a different library.
Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated!

Most likely due to the way iTunes saves information. iTunes knows one ipod from another, probably using serial number, this information has to be saved on the machine. I think that iTunes is saving something to an area Deep Freeze wipes on restart.

  • Reinstalling iTunes on WinXP

Due to virus problems, space problems and daughter's computer problems, I decided to uninstall iTunes and iPod. Both appeared to uninstall okay. iPod reinstalled readily, but the iTunes installer states that I do not have sufficient priveleges to complete the installation for all users of the machine. "Log on as an administrator and then retry this installation." I have administrator rights. I've seen several posts concerning this problem and I've tried to identify the possible solutions recommended but nothing seems to work. The error message begins with a file name under 'WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\{501---and so forth}' I can't get to this file to erase it. Any thoughts?

There is some anecdotal evidence that the scripts on the Apple site that are supposed to detect the version of Windows you are running may fail for some users - jumping straight to the "Thank you for downloading ..." page with the installer not having been downloaded.  As an alternative, you can go directly to the relevant downloads:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe
See turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for more details if you're still having problems with installation.
