Itunes 7.0.1.8 / xp --- momentary black screen w/white lines at startup

I upgraded to itunes 7.0.1.8 about a week ago. It's been fine, except now when I start up itunes a black screen with white lines flashes momentarily, then everything reverts back to normal. I'm pretty sure it just started happening in the last couple days. Also, I just noticed that it only seems to happen when itunes starts up maximized. Otherwise, it's fine. The only thing out of the ordinary that I've done recently is to run an old DOS game that I never ran before. I guess I'm concerned that maybe the game may have done something to cause this. Anyone else out there getting the black screen with white lines at start up?
Thanks.

UPDATE/EDIT FROM PREVIOUS POST:
Ok. The new 7.0.18 does repair the volume slider audio issue. HOWEVER, Simply installing the new update (at least for me) did **NOT** fix the problem. After posting my previous post, I tried to remove Quicktime and iTunes completely and try reinstalling.
It turns out that when I uninstalled Quicktime from Add/Remove Programs, it didn't remove all the Quicktime files and it was not reinstalling Quicktime afterwards!!
I only noticed when I downloaded the standalone version of Quicktime and tried running it and it said a "newer version" was on my computer, though it did not show up on my Add/Remove Programs file listing.
So I looked in the usual places and found that I had a Quicktime folder remaining in the Program Files folder and one in the C:\Windows\system32 folder. I also had to manually remove the following files from the C:\Windows\system32 folder:
Quicktime.qts, QuickTimeMusicalInstruments.qtx, the Quicktime.Resources folder, QuicktimeVR.qtx and the QuickTimeVR.Resources folder.
The main problem is that iTunes didn't let me know there was an issue with the QuickTime installation. It just wouldn't run iTunes. There should have been a notification.
Anyway, after all this, I reinstalled iTunes fresh and checked the volume slider and LO' And Behold! The volume slider issue was repaired.
However, there is a LOT of skipping occurring that never happened before. Not sure what's up with that. CPU usage stays low and then I get a few skips per minute...UNACCEPTABLE!!! That didn't happen before and that issue will still need to be fixed. Until then, back to WinAmp. Thx a LOT Apple...you *#^@ing hosers!

  • Black screen with white line

I have a late 2009 Macbook.  Ocasionally when i open it up, i get a black screen with a bright white line at the bottom of the monitor.  Rebooting and closing the laptop doesn't change anything.  I can connect it to an external display and the display appears pefectly on the other screen, while the mac remains black with a white line at the bottom.  If i take off the bottom cover plate, and touch a new random things, the screen will return to normal, but flicker initially. This has now happened 3 times, and i can't seem to make any sense of it.  After reading online i can't see to find any problems on this MC207ll/a macbook.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You obviously broke the screen when the phone was dropped.  Apple doesn't repair the screen on an iPhone 4; it will replace the phone for $149.

  • Black Screen with white text at startup (??)

    Hello All:
I have a 2010 15" MacBook Pro, just got it in June. Had to send it in for a logic board replacement and now have it back. Everything works great except now instead of having the standard Apple greyish startup screen, I have a black screen with white text that scrolls through all of the startup stuff. I figure they changed some line on a plist somewhere so they could watch the startup and make sure everything was OK, then forgot to change it back.
Although I know it is good to know what's going on under the hood, I would rather it started up the regular way. Anyone know how to switch it back? I would call Apple, but would rather not sit on the phone for a long time for what I believe is probably a very simple fix. I did a search but couldn't find my problem listed....
    Thanks everyone...

    Kappy:
Thanks for the reply. I looked at the plist, but the -v was not there. Here is a copy of the plist:

    <key>Kernel Flags</key>
    <string></string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
At least I know what it is called now - a "verbose startup".
Again, thanks for the help. Learn something new every day.

  • PLEASE HELP!!! Black Screen with white curser at startup...

at startup after grey screen fan turns on and screen turns black with a white curser in the upper left. Then one line of text shows saying something to do with single user mode failed with a bunch of other text. (sorry I didn't write it down) It then vanishes for a minute with just the white curser remaining and repeats.
    Ran hardware test... everything OK
I have repaired permissions which took almost an hour of CD.
I tried repairing disk failed " Invalid Key Length, volume check failed" twice.
I am currently running os off external backup HD.
I tried doing a archive and install but said I could not because the my os software(10.4.11) was newer than my original CD (10.4), is that correct?
I do not know what to do? Please help!!!!

You will need to reinstall OS X, but you cannot do an Archive and Install until you repair the drive. See the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Black Screen and White text at startup

Greetings, I recently installed the latest security update so I don't know for sure if this is the cause or a coincidence. When I startup my iMac G5 1.8Ghz PPC I now get a black screen with a lot of white text instead of the ususal grey screen with the apple logo. The computer does startup and seems to function OK however but this is total weirdness. I downloaded and reinstalled the 10.4.8 combo PPC update. I booted from my backup drive and it still does this. While booted from backup I ran repairs on permissions and disk repairs and then I ran DiskWarrior. Still flakey. Last week the power suppluy and logic board were replaced as part of the iMac G5 repair extension program from Apple but this behavior started immediateely after the latest Security update was installed as recommended by the software updates application. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks for reading this and thanks in advance for any help.

I zapped the PRAM and all is well now.... Weird! Thanks to all!
One of the settings in the PRAM can cause the Mac to act like a specific keyboard shortcut was pressed at startup; in your case, it was the verbose mode shortcut, which is Command+V. Some utility software packages can toggle this setting, and it can be changed from the Terminal.

  • Black screen with white line after dropping

MY husband dropped his iPhone and now it has a black screen with a white line from top to bottom. The phone can take calls but the screen never changes. Is this a screen problem that would be fixed if we replace it or is it something internal? He can press buttons but it only does the emergency call and then you can hear a bunch of buttons being pressed even though he isn't touching the screen. Any help would be great!!

  • Black screen with white circle every 5 seconds, after water damage

my ipod touch (3gen.32gb) had water damage 3 days ago. now as it dried, i connected it to itunes and restored, but it keeps showing black screen with white circle every 3-5 seconds. could this be a software problem or is it all because of water?  i put it in recovery mode, and restored again, but it did not help, is there anything i could do to stop it ? thanks

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

my i touch has a black screen with white lines and will not reset

What happened whenyou tried to restore the iPod as suggested in the article I refernced:
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

I can't trasfer music from my library in itunes to my iphone 3GS. A black ring with a line through it comes up when i try to move music onto my iphone from itunes. How can I fix this so that I can load my phone with music?

How are you trying to transfer it and what are your setting on iTunes.  I'm not on a computer that has iTunes at the moment so I'm going from memory and similar issue.  If iTunes is set to sync music then I don't think you can select and drag, if set to manual manage music then you can.  Also make sure you are dragging to music on the iPhone.
    Hope this helps

  • I don't know what's wrong with my 3GS. It only shows the black screen with white apple. Turning it on then off doesn't help.

I don't know what's wrong with my 3GS. It only shows the black screen with white apple. Home button and turning the phone off then on doesn't seem to do anything.

    Thanks Lucas,
I've tried doing that with no results. Same screen keeps showing. Maybe it'd be more helpful if I told you a bit more info.  My phone was randomly playing music, and the voice control would also suddenly start without me touching the phone.  Then I let the battery die and started to recharge when on the screen it indicated to plug into my computer/iTunes, I tried to restore but was getting an error message (can't remember what it said now). Battery died and now my current issue of the black screen with white apple.  I'd love to be able to restore my phone but now its not showing as a device on my iTunes. HELP! Any other suggestions?

  • Black screen with white apple logo won't go away! Help please.

Last night I turned theipod completeley off and restarted it. The black screen with the white apple logo came on and hasn't went of since.
I've tried everything I could find in the forums and on the support page.
iTunes will not recognize my ipod which has continously tried to start up again every 5 minutes.
I don't know what more to do, ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dana

I did try that. When I do that the red slider bar to turn the ipod off doesn't come up.
Its still trying to reset itself but won't go any farther than the black screen with white apple.

Hi there did you end up getting this resolved?  I have the same exact same issue with my Ipad 4 when updating to 8.1.3....frozen on the apple logo.  Tried resetting as advised by other users but just goes back to the same logo.  Tried connecting to iTunes but device is not picked up at all.  Left it over night to run flat hoping charging might kick start something....but when I put on the charger it shows the battery charge icon but won't actually charge it.  It's really doin my head in trying to find a fix - cheers Morgan

  • Frozen screen, black, screen with white whirly circle

my ipad seems frozen, black screen with white whirly circle, before this happened, kept going to the apple logo on the black screen

It might be time to restore your iPad. Recovery mode might be needed as well.
iPad: Unable to update or restore
Before you try recovery mode, connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Click on the iPad on the left side under devices. Then click on the summary tab. See if that works and if it does, click on Restore and try that way first.
iTunes: Backing up, updating and restoring iOS software
If that doesn't work, then you will probably have to resort to using recovery mode.

  • Is there a way to set the iPhone to have a black screen with white text?

I found the "Invert Colors" option under Settings > General > Accessibility, and like it a lot. It provides enhanced readability.
The problem is that it inverts all colors, even for apps. So when I view a web page in Safari, all the colors are inverted for the images.
And when I view my photos in Photos, these are also inverted as well.
Is there a way to set up the iPhone to default to a black screen and white letters for the OS, but allow the apps and photos, etc. to
be viewed in their regular colors. For example, can I run Photos to view my photos on a black background but view the photos in their
    normal coloring?

I'm afraid that is not possible, maybe this could bee a step in that direction if you use the mentioned Zoom function:
    Invert Colors and Grayscale
Sometimes, inverting the colors or changing to grayscale on the iPhone screen makes it easier to read.
Invert the screen colors. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility, then turn on Invert Colors.
See the screen in grayscale. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility, then turn on Grayscale.
Turn on both effects to see inverted grayscale. You can also apply these effects to just the contents of the zoom window—see Zoom on page 150.

I installed Mountain Lion in my IMac and now, some times, when I start up my mac it looks with a black screen and white text. I'm really worry about it, can somebody help me?

Don't worry, this is probably just Verbose Mode. It's perfectly harmless.  If you're not specifically invoking it, than it's probably down to an unwanted setting in NVRAM.  See this article on resetting NVRAM if it continues to bother you.
