Itunes 7.0.2 crashes whilst updating library

Hi All,
I have just logged onto my itunes and found out that itunes 7.0.2 is available. D/l 7.0.2 and went to run, accepted the user agreement, itunes opens with a message saying 'updating library', gets about 3/4 the way through and i get the message "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close".
I read several items from support and forums, so far i have;
- checked for viruses
- completed disk clean (defrag not necessary)
- tried to reinstall 7.0.2 (same message)
- deleted the quicktime files and did a repair to itunes
- deleted itunes ISCFinfo
NO JOY with any of these actions. Can anyone else shed some light on this problem for me....
Cheers, dan

Hi B-Noir
I have had no success with either of the options you offered.
1 - having used the previous version of the library (from sept with only 2400 tracks) itunes crashed in exactly the same way with no option to view any of the tracks as suggested in the tips.
2 - the help point taking the xml file onto the desktop and deleting the itl file never worked either.
What happens next....?
Thanks, dan

  • Updated to newest version of itunes and now it tries to update library and freezes, how do I get it to just play music again.

Updated to newest version of itunes and now it tries to update library and it stops responding and won't let me cancel the little update bar that appears. I just want to know how to get it to the point where I can play music again.

This is happening to me too, very frustrating

  • ITunes problems after upgrading - progress bar "updating library"

after upgrading iTunes to the latest version I open iTunes and a progress bar appears "updating library". After a few seconds it stucks and I do not get a response at all. I have to cancel the program in the Windows Task Manager. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers

You might try rebooting your computer. Select Shutdown and let the computer turn off. Then start it up again and see if the problem is corrected.

  • ITunes 7.3.2 crashes while "updating iTunes library"

Just upgraded to the latest version available on the iTunes site, and now iTunes crashes each time I try to open it about 90% of the way through the "updating iTunes library" process. I went through the 5 suggested steps on the apple technical installation help page, and also reinstalled iTunes 7.2 (which works fine), deleting podcasts, and then re-installing 7.3.2, all with no luck.
    Any ideas?

that might be being caused by the update choking on a song file (or files).
finding which song file is causing the freeze can be tricky. but some folks have been having some success using Roy B's instructions in the following post:

  • Itunes 11.1.5 crash, wiped out library and now not opening files

Itunes 11.1.5 crashed on my Mac OSX 7.5, wiping out my Itunes library and playlists. I have the albums on my hard drive but can't even open them with Itunes now (I can open them with other programs). I've tried redownloading Itunes thinking that somehow the program was damaged, but same problem with the fresh download. I have my playlists etc on my Ipod but don't want to do connect it until I'm sure that Itunes is functioning correctly- am reluctant to risk losing the data on my Ipod too.
What's wrong with Itunes that I can't open or add any files? And once that is fixed, is there any way of recovering my past library and playlists? Or if not, how do I safely transfer my Ipod's data to Itunes? It is not all Itunes purchases.

Okay, an update. Weird. I tried importing a cd into Itunes, and not only did that work, but when it was completed all the music from my hard drive's Itunes media library appeared in Itunes too. Not the playlists, but at least the albums. Odd, since for hours this morning I couldn't import even a single song. Assuming I have to manually recreate the playlists, that there's no easy way to recover those. At least Itunes appears to otherwise be functioning tho.

  • ITunes 10.6.1 crashes after update

    Hello there!
I'm running iTunes on a Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 7 Enterprise.
Today I updated to 10.6.1 and now iTunes freezes as soon as I click on any song. (I get the message "iTunes has stopped working", and the only option is to close it down.) I looked around and found that some suggested to download the update directly from the site, so I did that, with the "repair" option. Nothing. Everthing looks fine, but it freezes immediately.
I don't know what my previous version was. I don't use iTunes all that often, only to update my iPod and iPhone when I get new music. I imported some music today (and all was fine and just like normal), but then I decided to upgrade the software before syncing. Now I have the music, but can't listen to it. Sigh.
What do I do now? I could uninstall iTunes completely, I guess, but would prefer to just uninstall the update, if possible.
I'm not very "techy", so be patient.

    @orthorad1
I had the same issue with my iTunes 10.6.1 hanging when i was trying to sync with my iPhone. I'd plug in my iphone and itune would just hang, and the only way to get out was to force quit the application. After numerous attempts at completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, the resolution that i found was to go to the "~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices" directory and rename the "local" file to "local.bak". After a relaunch of iTunes, I was able to sync once more. I hope this helps.

  • Itunes 7.1.1.5Crashes while updating Library

Help! I'm trying to upgrade to the latest version 7.1.1.5 and everything seems to go smoothly until I open the itunes and the program starts to update the library. About half way through itunes freezes and I need start over. I've tried reinstalling but it doesn't help.
Any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be appreciated.

If you are having a lot of problems and don't have a restore point created, you can uninstall Itunes and your Ipod and then go to oldapps.com and click on Itunes. At this point, you can go back to Itunes 7.0.2 and download it to get it working again. The only issue I had was that it wouldn't install properly until I uninstalled my Ipod as well. I am going to stick with this version for the time being.

  • Aperture 3.01 Crashing on updating library

This all stems from my G4 MacBook 17" being stolen. My Aperture programme was on the laptop but luckily my library was on my office hard disc. This has a mixture of imbedded files and referenced files on a variety of media - CDR', DVD's and hard drives.
Laptop has been replaced with a new MacBook Pro 17" this week and loaded with an upgrade for Aperture 3 and Final Cut Express 4.
Aperture has been updated to 3.01 via software updater.
Aperture will run with the sample library but after upgrading my main library which went fine everything was OK until i quit and restarted the next day. It then crashes 30 sec's after starting and restarting continuously the same repeats itself.
I have created a new empty library and imported the updated library into it and again all is ok until I quit and restart, then back to crashing after 30 sec's.
The sample library after all this opens and works OK.
This is very frustrating as all my work is in the library and I am at a standstill.
    Help!!

It seems that the problem is something inside that library itself. Make sure you have a back up. Then launch Aperture while holding the command and option keys. In the resulting dialog box read what each option does and choose Repair Database. ( I doubt its permissions, but you could try that too.) This will take a while perhaps hours depending on the size of your library.

  • ITunes 7.0.2.16 Crashing during "Updating library"

    Hello,
iTunes 7.0.2.16 seems to install just fine, along with Quicktime. My problem comes when I open iTunes. It wants to update my library (I do not know why), and I seem to have no control over preventing it from doing so.
Anyway, it proceeds to nearly finish. Within' the last 5% or so, it crashes. The box that appears is one of those "Would you like to send this crash information to Microsoft" boxes that give little more than techno garble about what the error could possibly be.
I haven't found anyone else experiencing this problem yet. I've tried uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime both, and reinstalling. But to avail.
    Can anyone help?

the library update may be crashing on a song file (or files).
tracking down which file is associated with this can be a trial. but some folks have been having some success using Roy B's technique from the following post:

  • ITunes crashes while updating library

For the past few months, whenever I start up iTunes, it automatically begins to update my song library. This is fine and all, but once it gets about 4/5 of the way done, iTunes crashes. There is no apparent way to stop iTunes from updating the library, since it wont let me select the window with the progress bar or the main iTunes window itself. I've tried reinstalling iTunes twice and fiddling around with quicktime, but nothing seems to change. I've posted this topic before and I came back an hour later and it was on page five with zero responses, so that sort of lead me to believe no one had an answer for me, but I'm becoming very sick of having my iTunes and thus my entire music library bricked. So please, any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated.

The last time I saw that (although it has just been the once), the problem was caused by a damaged library file. Given that you're getting the error when iTunes is doing the library update, I suspect it's the same issue.
Try an iTunes library recreation as per the instructions in the Re-creating the iTunes Library file section of the following document:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists
Does that get you past the error?

  • ITunes 7 hangs while trying to update Library

I installed 1Tunes 7 onto my Jukebox Mac - contains 16,450+ tracks, 90Gb. iiTunes hangs when trying to update the library. I keep all my actual music files on an external LaCie D2 160Gb drive. Even if I move the drive to a different Mac, and attempt to update the Library there, it also hangs.
    Has anybody got a suggestion?

Sorry to not be of any direct help, but I'm having the same problem and my situation is almost identical. iTunes 7 in general has been buggy for me and I'm wondering if it has to do with the fact that I have 100GB of music which is located on an external drive (not an uncommon set-up). I've tried the reinstall from the download of 7.02 as well as software update and have tried repairing permissions vs. not. I've also trashed the itunes plist files in my usr library.
And now I'm just reflecting on how practiaclly everytime I update something from apple I have to spend days trying to figure out how to fix it. I would consider myself a pro user as well which makes me wonder what the millions of novice mac users do to keep their systems running... oh yea, I almost forgot, for $350 for 2 years beyond the year you get for free (175/yr) apple's novice apple 'care' customer service staff will attempt to help you fix their faulty, seemingly untested (in a real world working situation) upgrades (or they'll just deny the fact that the problem exists and make any attempt to blame it on the fact that you probably just forgot to plug your machine in). Makes me wonder if the faulty upgrades and applecare have anything directly in common. Is Steve Jobs republican?
Sorry, years of dealing with apple products, just had to vent...

  • Itunes 10.6.1 crashing after update

Itunes had been running fine after the 10.6 update.  I applied the update to 10.6.1 (as every good apple customer should) and now Itunes crashes everytime about 30 seconds into starting the program.
I tried starting in safe mode with the same results. Unfortunaly i don't see a easy way to downgrade on my macbook pro to an older version now and i can't seem to get this working after researching on the internet and apple boards. I have uninstalled, rebooted, downloaded a new copy, installed, reboot then start up iTunes 15 time over the last 2 days. Only to have it crash/ freeze/ ceased to function and shut down 10 second into boot up. The version available on www.apple.com was iTunes 10.6.1 each time. Until the 15th time where upon it was iTunes 10.6.1.7 that was available to be downloaded. I can't say that I'm please with this exercise in frustration. Next time around I'll be checking out the forum before updating ANYTHING that iTunes pushes my way.

  • Itunes 9.0.2 crash after moving library to external HD - gathering informat

    Hello!
Strange stuff going on - but probably because i did something wrong
To give a quick overview : i bought an external HD (LaCie) to store my music library that was getting too big (45 GB) for the small internal HD on my Macbook. I changed the location in my preferences and later on itunes started copying the songs/videos/apps to the HD. The change of location was not immediately accepted. i had to do it a few times before itunes kept the new location. I checked if the new location was working by deconnecting/reconnecting my external drive. Indeed, everything worked. But when i closed itunes and restarted something went wrong.... Genius seems to make itunes crash - it always says : gathering information about your library (and then it stops halfway and itunes crashes). Maybe i have to do everything all over again but i don't know how as itunes keeps on crashing and i cannot change anything anymore.

  • Installed lates version of iTunes. Now it hangs 'while updating library' Any ideas?

Running iTunes for Windows, on 64-bit Vista PC. I tried uninstalling iTunes and re-installing, but it still stops running while 'updating itunes library'.

I searched this forum for simlar problems. I found:
    Start iTunes in Safe Mode
Open iTunes in Safe Mode to isolate any interfence with plug-ins or scrpits not manufactured by Apple.
Hold down the Shift and Control keys while opening iTunes. If performed correctly, you should see a dialog that says "iTunes is running in safe mode" before iTunes finishes starting up.
After clicking Continue, determine whether the issue you were experiencing persists in Safe Mode.
If you see the same issue while iTunes is in Safe Mode, proceed to the Create a New User Account section below. If you do not experience the same issue, consult iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins for steps on how to remove thrid-party plug-ins.
The library fully updated after a few seconds. I then closed iTunes and started it normally. It runs fine now. I'm not sure what caused the problem, but it was fixed. I hope it works for you. For the full article click:
