ITunes 7.0 wiped contents of my iPod!

The first time I connected my iPod to iTunes since upgrading to 7.0, it came up with an error saying something along the lines of, "iTunes cannot read or write to this disk".
The only option in this error box was the "OK" button, so when I clicked it iTunes automatically and immediately started to delete the entire contents of my iPod! I only realised this when it was about 75% deleted because I noticed the reading for the amount of Gigabytes used on the iPod was increasing, and within about 30 seconds I was left with an empty iPod! I have never had the iPod connected to any other computer than my mac. My iTunes has always been set to update iPod manually, and after I updated to 7.0 that setting is still on manual.
After 7.0 had emptied the iPod, I disconnected it and all the songs were still listed in the iPod, it was still showing as having 8000+ songs in it (as was the case before I connected it), but when I selected a track to play, it just played nothing and flicked from song to song, I presume in search of some actual data to play.
All is not lost, because my music is still on the mac, but something in iTunes 7.0 has caused this to occur. Anyone else have this problem?

Did you try actually doing what the message on the screen said ("Use the iPod Updater to restore the iPod to factory settings")? Cause that's the only thing that's going to fix it at this point.

  • ITunes Reports "iTunes Cannot read the contents of the iPod...."

This morning I connected my 2 week old iPod Classic to my laptop via the USB cable and iTunes came up and displayed a message saying "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod MHAM'S IPOD". It suggested a restore, which I have not tried yet. I have faithfully used the "Eject" function in iTunes to disconnect. After reading some other posts in the forums, it appears that others are having a similar issue. I'm concerned that this is normal operating behavior for this product. Given that this is my first Apple brand purchase, I'm a little turned off to the brand. Does anyone have a suggestion that doesn't involve me wiping this thing clean and starting over? And is this something that I should just expect? I ran a diagnostic and the results are below.

The iPod updater logging file cannot be found.

I had this same exact issue happen to me this morning, and I lost 40 gigs worth of transferring in restoring it. I put a few albums on for the day, and when I tried connecting again this evening, the same thing happened. It hit me when it happened the second time that both times I had the iPod locked when it connected it to the computer. I'm pretty sure I've never accidentally connected it while locked before. My guess it that it is unable to read the content since the iPod is locked, and somehow this causes some sort of corruption that prevents it from seeing the files until a restoration is done. I would think Apple should be able to release an update which would detect if the iPod was locked and tell you to unlock it rather than to go through this process of losing all your music from the iPod. It scares me to think this could happen again simply if I am absent-minded in the future and forget to check whether it is locked or not before I connect it.

  • "iTunes cannot read the contents of the ipod", How can I fix this?

Hello everyone, I am having trouble with my iPod touch 32GB and getting iTunes to detect it. I'm using Windows 7.
When plugging it in tonight, I got the message "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod (Name). Go to the summary tab in the iPod preferences and click restore to restore this iPod to factory settings". I attemped to do this, but I then got an iTunes error "3184" and was unable to install the iPod software.
    I've tried...
    - Using a different computer
    - Using a different USB cable
    - Rebooting the iPod
Nothing seems to work. I've read a solution as to delete one of the iTunes files on the iPod, but the iPod doesn't show up in my Windows Explorer, so I am unable to do this. The computer does however charge the battery when I have the iPod plugged in. I'm also able to still listen to music on the iPod as well.
One other note, I had the same thing happen to my previous iPod touch. I got my original iPod touch back in December 2010. In October 2011, the iPod just died one day and I was not able to turn it on at all or charge it. When I'd plug it into the computer, I got the exact same errors and was unable to restore the iPod. I sent it in to Apple as it was still under warrenty and they sent me a replacement. Now 3 months later it's happened again. Of course the warrenty starts from the day you purchase the original, so this is no longer under warrenty despite having it for only 3 months. The only difference this time is that the battery still charges and I can still turn it on and listen to music.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    hi Angie!
hmmm. is there an Apple Store convenient where you can take the ipod for a check-up?

  • Error message: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod."

I wanted to get my dad a new iPod for Xmas and transfer all his music from his ancient Classic. But when I connect to my MacBookPro, I get the error message: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod." I see that 90% of the ipod drive is used, but I don't see any songs listed either on the iPod screen or in iTunes, which is worrying. Is there anything I can to save the music? He will be so upset that it's all gone...

My suggestions, when Restoring the iPod.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your iPod to the PC, using a high speed USB 2.0 port at the back of your PC.
Disconnect all other USB devices, except the mouse and keyboard.
Stop all other programs except iTunes.
    Good Luck!

  • ITunes cannot read the contents of the iPod " my iPod's name ".

I'm having problems with syncing the 5th gen nano to iTunes 9 on my early 2008 MBP. I had one since September when they came out. It was fine for a while, but then I would get the error message: iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "<my iPod's name>". It got to where it was happening every other night or every night when I would try to sync. Of course it goes without saying that this makes the video camera unusable, since one can't count on retrieving the videos.
I talked with Apple Support on the phone. They were very good. Led me through a rescue-restore. This was described as more thorough than a normal restore. It involves a non-trivial button sequence. Also per suggestions I quit using a non-powered hub. I had been hooking both my iPod touch2 and my nano5 up to the hub to sync (not enough USB ports).
We tried the rescue-restore and things looked OK, but then a couple days later on the evening sync, the message came back. I should also mention that I use the pedometer feature in always-on mode, so of course that data gets lost as well.
I then went to the local apple store genius bar, and they saw the same error message I got when they plugged it in, so they decided to give me a new nano5.
I figured this was really it, but last night, on the second evening sync since the initial setup, the same error message is back with the new nano5. Feel bad because it now seems likely there was nothing wrong with my first nano5 (unless both are bad the same way - seems unlikely), but at the same time, I can't use any nano5 like things are now.
So now it's time for some detective work. I have both a nano5 and a touch2, and I use pedometer in always-on mode on the nano5. I wonder if those might be clues. Last night when the error occurred, iirc I had previously sync'ed the nano5 ok and ejected. Then I had sync'ed my touch2. I unplugged the touch2 and went to sync the nano5 again to update for some playlist changes, and that's when the error occurred. I wonder if iTunes is somehow getting messed up and thinking it is still dealing with a touch2, and it trounces the nano5?
It's probably a long shot, but I think I read someone else here with the same error message, and had a touch.
Any ideas, would love to hear. I'm planning to try only syncing the nano5 on a fresh start of iTunes for a while, and see if that prevents the problem.
    Thanks,
    Joe

OK. How do I uninstall iTunes to reinstall it? Is there an uninstaller? Do I have to chase down plist files or other hidden system things I don't know about? Kind of a dumb question maybe, I've been on a mac at home for like five years now, but uninstalling apps is not something I need to do (that's a good thing).
So, yes, the problem happened again, with the new nano, on the second or third nightly sync (not sure how many days have gone by) since the plane to sync the nano first before the touch. Been using the right usb port also, in case that matters. Used to always use the left. The left port has a non-powered hub that has my time machine disk and a super-duper disk on it, along with an iLoc key. Tonight the two usb disks were not plugged in due to being in the process of be traded out for my other pair (I keep a pair offsite as well - backup-paranoid - but that's another topic).
Do you think it could matter what's plugged into the opposite USB port? Not the nano and the touch only go into the right port straight away - no hub.
Kind of a bummer, this. I hope we can figure it out. Thanks for helping...
BTW, I alway keep all my software up to date.

  • ITunes cannot read the contents of iPhone/iPod Touch?

After following these instructions to update iTunes https://discussions.apple.com/message/21853130#21853130 , Whenever i connect my iPod Touch 5th gen i get this message:
iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod “(my ipod name)”. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.
i click ok then iTunes says:
The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly, and you must manually eject the iPod before each disconnect. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod’s software.
I am NOT restoring my iPod as i know this is iTunes' problem. I went to the apple website and downloaded iTunes for mac and then installed it Installer said it was succuesful but after opening itunes i get the same problem. What do i do?
I WILL NOT DO ANYTHING IN TERMINAL. I never touch terminal and never will.

    Hi,
    I've the same problem too.
I had made iPhone sync on my PC in the past. But my HDD went in trouble and I had to buy another and reinstall Windows, so I lost my iTunes library.
Having no sync was ok, since I was comfortable with the photos, applications and music in my iPhone.
But yesterday my iPhone went out of disk space, and my problem started. I then needed to sync. I tried to extract my paid applications from iPhone using "transfer purchases from my iPhone". Unsuccessful, since it did not copy every application. I've tried to download the applications again, but iTunes say I need to pay for them. And now, after some unsuccessful purchase transfers and backups, iTunes says "iTunes cannot read the contents of iPhone", so I think I'm forced to restore the original settings.
    What should I do?
I don't want to pay again for the applications I already purchased.
I don't want to loose my application data.
I don't care about my music, photos and videos, cause I can get them elsewhere anyway.
Is there a way to save my iPhone, applications and data?
    Thanks

  • ITunes cannot read the contents of my iPod?

I wanted to put some new songs onto my iPod, but when I plug it into the computer, a message pops up; 'iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to its factory settings.'
I tried this, but when I connected my iPod to the computer again, the same message popped up. I have switched my iPod off and then back on, reconnected my iPod and downloaded iTunes again, but they all didn't work.
Does anyone know what to do?

    Reboot the computer
    Try another USB port
    Try aoterh cable

  • When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. All my music appears to have been erased  iPod yet 41GB of data is on it. Help!

When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. If I do this I will lose the contents of the iPod. The iPod shows no music on it yet 41GB of data is on it under "About" on the iPOD itself. It would appear that the music files are still there. I don't want to reset the iPod as it will mean reloading a significant amount of music i.e. my entire CD collection. Any suggestions? Has my iPod died?

(I'll lose all my music right?)
That is correct. A restore wipes all content from the device, resets all settings back to their defaults, and loads a fresh copy of the iPod's software onto the device.
See this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

After all the music is safely in iTunes again, go ahead and restore the iPod to factory settings as it says.

    re-installed itunes
May i please have a solution WITHOUT the restoring to factory settings :\ i would lose alot of time spent on playing games and such.. also all the gears i bought with in-app purchases

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

  • TS2771 itunes cannot read the contents of the ipod

Has anybody found a way to fix this error?  I have restored my ipod several times, but keep getting the error every week.

I am having the same problem as the original poster on my IPOD CLASSIC.  Here is a link to the product page on IPOD CLASSIC for those who may not know what it is.
I keep getting the error over and over.  I am able to successfully reformat the device, and reinstall all my tunes etc. and everything's good.  I do nothing in particular, maybe listen to a podcast.   A week later, the tunes and podcasts are GONE and the iPod says there is no music, however all my photos are present.  I plug it in.  My disk data is present (I have it enabled for disk use) however iTunes blows the following error.
iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod “MYPOD”. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.
Here is the SMART data for the iPod Classic's internal hard drive.
    Retracts: 7
    Reallocs: 0
    Pending sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours:2849
    Start/Stops: 7201
    Temp: Current 32C
    Temp: Min 9C
    Temp: Max 51C
(those are very good numbers by the way, indicating a healthy drive.)
Any ideas?  This started happening constantly several months ago,  If I recall there was an iTunes update around that time.

  • How can I replace my iTunes Library with the contents of my iPod, including the playlists?

I tried transferring the purchases, but it didn't move my playlists over. I have also tried backing my old library up to a disc, and putting it in my new computer, but it still didn't transfer my playlists.
Is there any way I can transfer my old itunes library from my old computer to my new computer, including the playlists?
I have heard people talk about replacing itunes with the contents of the ipod, but I'm not sure how to do it.

if you have an iPod Touch, there are PhoneView and iRip.

  • How can I reinstall iTunes without losing tune content of my iPod

I had a major Windows system 32 problem and had to reformat my hard drive. (Computer was backed up before incident.)
Later, I got a message about a corrupt iTunes driver and found iPod and iTunes in recycle bin.
    Long story short:
I have installed updated iPod software and now need to re-install iTunes. I read somewhere how to re-install updated iTunes without losing what is already on my iPod...but I forget where I read it.
Of course, I DON'T WANT TO LOSE the content in my iPod.
My understanding is that, if I do nothing to prevent it, when I download iTunes and connect my iPod to the PC, I will lose all my iPod content because the new iTunes library will be empty.
How do I get iTunes back again, without losing my iPod tunes?
All suggestions and help very much appreciated!!

  • "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod"   ***!?!?!

my ipod is no longer recognized by itunes. ofcourse the only fix would be to restore it, but i can't restore it unless itunes recognizes my ipod..... quite a catch 22, ehh? so what the heck are we supposed to do now apple? it sure doesn't seem like i'm the only one having this problem. below is the error message i get.
eMachines T-3092   Windows XP   AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 2.17Ghz, 960 MB of RAM

    Daniel,
We'd like to get a copy of your iTunesDB file out of /iPod_Control/iTunes/ on the iPod disk itself. Can you get that file using Windows Explorer and mail it to me. You may need to turn on the option to Show hidden files and folders from the View tab in Folder Options (from the Tools menu in Windows Explorer) to see the iPod_Control folder on the iPod disk.
After you send us that file, the next step is to update to iTunes 7.0.1.

  • TS1591 Itunes cannot read the contents of the Ipod "Name of Drive"-  Is there ANY fix for this?

I have an Ipod Classic.  I am looking at my library- all my songs appear there, but are GONE from the Ipod.  This is the 2nd time it has happened.  The 1st time I restored and lost everything.  This 2nd time I have tried every supposed fix that I could find on the internet, including the "repair" option.  Nothing has worked.  Don't want to lose all of my music again!
Of course I am really irritated, Apple has us buying all of our music from Itunes and then has an issue with their product that wipes everything that we have paid for out.
If anyone has a fix, I would SO appreciate it!
