ITunes 7.1 breaks smart playlists for podcasts

All previous podcast-supporting versions of iTunes built smart playlists that reflected the order of the files in the RSS feed... but not iTunes 7.1! Its smart playlist order reflects the order the files were added to the iTunes library.
You know how iTunes downloads multiple episodes in newest-to-oldest order? Well, that's how they show up in a smart playlist now.
And no, it's not a problem of sort order. I have tried every option related to sorting by name, artist, and album - nothing makes a difference.
So, in one of my podcasts (a radio feed recorded from 13:00 to 16:00 Monday-Friday), I now have:
- CH0703151335
- CH0703151306
- CH0703151435
- CH0703151406
- CH0703151506
- CH0703151535
- CH0703161306
- CH0703161406
- CH0703161335
- CH0703161535
- CH0703161506
- CH0703161435
Those are dates & times (2007-03-15, 13:06, for example), and of course the files are in correct date/time order in the feed. You might be able to guess how I figured out what it's doing. (If you didn't figure it out, here's the story: I updated the podcast while the episodes were being recorded.)
If you have seen this, did you figure out a way around it? Thanks! So far, I haven't, and it's really annoying. As I said, this is new in iTunes 7.1, and it persists in 7.1.1.

After more tinkering, I have figured out what's going on here, and I think there's a bug here.
For all of the podcasts I mentioned, the "Sort Name" is identical. In the case that the "Sort Name" is identical, I would think that the "Name" field would be used when sorting by name. Instead of sorting on name, however, iTunes is sorting on the date the file was introduced into the iTunes library. That seems to me to be a bug.
I have made a change to see if I can empty the "Sort Name" field, to see what that will do. Hopefully that will sort correctly.

  • Did Apple get rid of the Smart playlist for Podcasts in iOS 6

I can not figure out how to do a smart playlist consisting of Podcast with apples latest ios.  I had no problem making smart playlist with podcast when the podcast were included with the music app.

But I have at last found a fix that has worked for me, at least. I deleted the Podcasts app from my iPhone 4 (and from iTunes on my Mac), re-started my iPhone, and - Happy Days! - the unplayed podcast episodes I was looking for have returned to my smart playlist in the Music app, as they are in the iTunes smart playlist on my Mac.

Can one create a smart playlist for multiple podcasts and to play one after the other on your iPod? I want to combine podcasts of the same topic in a smart playlist. When I tried to do this I chose smart playlist, album starts with, and then did it again for each podcast I wanted. That didn't work. If it can be done how do you do it?
I have a fifth generation iPod which is always updated to the latest as well as the itunes.

Say for example I want to put different car related podcasts in one smart playlist. Car related podcasts such as Wall Street Journal Car Cast and NPR Car Talk. Can it be done and if so how?

Click on a station and drag to the left. The playlists sidebar will open up. Drop on the playlist you want to add to.

  • Smart playlist and podcasts

I have a 160gb iPod classic. I would like to listen to my podcasts like I do my music, one right after another. I made a smart playlist for my podcasts, right clicked it to copy to play order and synced my iPod. The smart playlist is in iTunes, nowhere to be found on my iPod.
    Anybody have any suggestions?

@woodp Interesting approach. I guess I never noticed a Podcasts Smart Playlist as you describe it.
In my testing when I had the Automatically include option selected, none of the selected playlists from the Include Episodes from Playlists section synced, while all of the episodes from the Automatically include option did. It may be that the rules of your Netcast Smart Playlist were transferred and your iPod is evaluating those rules on the content that was transferred from the Automatically include option.
As I've always seen it, Smart Playlists provide much more control over the content that I sync with my iPod. First I have way more podcast episodes than will fit on my iPod, or any iPod available. There are some combinations available from the Automatically include, but not enough for my tastes.
As an example, I want the most recently added unplayed episodes for some podcasts, like news podcasts. At the same time I want the least recently unplayed episodes of other podcasts, like audio dramas I'm trying to catch up on. Some times I want a playlist of episodes 5 minutes long or less when I'm likely to be interrupted. Smart Playlists allow me to include all of these, and manage the space they take up on my iPod with greater control than previously available from the Podcasts tab of my iPod.
To get around the limitations of the Podcasts tab in iTunes 8, I like most of the people posting here created playlists and synced them through the Music tab. Apple has taken care of this work around and now I manage Music from the Music tab and Podcasts from the Podcasts tab.
I guess the thing that would have made this transition less frustrating would have been if they had taken a couple extra minutes during the demonstration of iTunes 9.0 at the Keynote to show how podcast syncing was improved. Still Steve Jobs did say the day was going to be about Music, and it was.

  • 3.1.3 Software Update and Smart Playlists with Podcasts

I did the 3.1.3 update last night and now my smart playlist containing podcasts is gone.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?
    Any idea on a fix?
    Thanks

For whatever it's worth, 3.1.3 appears to have fixed my problems with Smart Playlists...
In 3.1 and 3.1.2 I'd get the same contents of a Smart Playlist between iTunes and the iPhone, but a very different order.
e.g. I have my Podcasts smart playlist set to order by ascending publish date. A bit annoying because I wouldn't get them played back in chronological order on the iPhone, but only an annoyance.
Now since applying 3.1.3 - with no mods to filters or Live Updating I might add - they've back to showing the right order on the iPhone as well as on iTunes. Which is a relief. Long may it continue!
PS: I did also update iTunes to 9.0.3... I don't suppose this would help those on the list having troubles would it?

  • How do I create smart playlists for albums?

    Hi,
I have a lot of albums and each album has their proper track listings meaning their proper track songs. I would like to create smart playlists for all my individual albums and for every individual album has a smart playlist with the proper track songs in the smart playlist for the album?
1.) Would doing this be possible?
2.) If so, how could I do this?
I forgot to mention a lot of my albums are multiple CDs, and a lot also include bonus CDs.
I don't know many tracks or CDs off the top of my head, but here are some album names as an example.
Road Trips vol. 1 no. 1
Road Trips vol. 1 no. 2
Road Trips vol. 1 no. 3
Road Trips vol. 1 no. 4
    And the list goes on.
    Thank you,

An album in iTunes is a collection of tracks that have the same Album name and the same Artist or Album Artist. Older iPods only work with Artist. The iPod has menu listtings for Artists & Albums built in, so again no need to duplicate with playlists. Any tracks you put on an iPod will, if correctly tagged, show up in their relevant album, and in the artist listing, the genre listing, any playlists that you include, etc.
For tips on organizing tracks in iTunes and on an iPod see the Grouping tracks into albums article. It needs some updated images, but the information is otherwise still relevant.

  • Cannot create Smart Playlist for tracks to upgrade using iTunes Match

I just subscribed to iTunes Match and am trying to use a Smart Playlist to identify the tracks that can be upgraded following the instructions in this article:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1163620/how_to_upgrade_tracks_to_itunes_match_fa st.html
When I try to create the smart playlist, I get "This smart playlist contains one or more conditions which are empty or conflict with each other. This will result in never matching a song. Are you sure you want to save this playlist?".  I've narrowed it down to the iCloud Status settings.  I can create a playlist with either Matched or Purchased; however, I get the message above when specifying both.  Any ideas?

You need to make sure the rule for these 2 is Match Any, not Match all.

  • Multiple libraries/smart playlists for different disks, or sort by location

    Hey.
My iTunes music is physically stored on my computer's local hard disk, on an external hard disk, and on a remote server from which I stream online. When my computer is disconnected from my external hard disk or from the internet, I don't want to seeing unreachable tracks in my iTunes library; I'd rather have a list of songs which are available for me to play. I'd like to create multiple libraries, one for each disk.
Or I'd like to create smart playlists which automatically fill with content from specified locations (as opposed to content added by artist, duration, last playtime, etc).
Or I'd like to be able to sort my library based on physical file location.
As far as I've searched, this isn't yet possible. Anyone know how to make this work, or know how to suggest this feature to Apple?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. This worked but it doesnt seem to be consistent.. not sure if the fact that I have a smart playlist based on another smart playlist (only because I want 5 anded conditions + 1 or'd which is playcount=0) and hence something goes wrong?
Any better way overall to manage these?  I now have 4 pairs of these.
Also, any way to have a Smart Playlist that selects only video?  They have the Media Kind = Podcast, but no Media Type = Video..
    Many thanks,

  • ITunes doesn't show some playlists for sync with iPhone ...

I've got a few smart playlists.
The annoying thing now is that some of them do not show up under "my iphone" / Music / Playlists.
So I can't sync them to my iPhone ;-(
I used to have this smart playlist in the iPhone section of iTunes - but I can't remember when it disappeared.
For instance, I've got a smart playlist that contains some of the latest episodes of some podcasts.
It is populated fine, but it does not show up in the playlists for sync with my iPhone.
Another smart playlist (which I call "random pop") contains some music from my music collection.
This one does show up in the iPhone section of iTunes ...
BTW, just in case you wonder why I have this smart playlist containing some episodes of the podcasts: first, there are some episodes that I don't care for on my iPhone; second, with this little trick I can jump by a simple double-click to the next episode, no matter which podcast it belongs to, while listening to my iPhone.
Any insights, tips, and suggestions will be highly appreciated!
    Best regards,
    Gabriel.

  • ITunes won't sync smart playlists

So I have 8 smart playlists plus 6 normal playlists in my iTunes, it's all been working well and it's been syncing all of them until about a week ago. After I synced it, I noticed that only the normal playlists were on the ipod, not the smart ones while they are still showing in itunes, I tried re-syncing but it didn't work, I still only have normal playlists.... PLEASE HELP!

After some experimentation I have a solution that I find satisfactory for a smart playlist containing only podcasts, and not referencing any other playlist, AND still leaves the "Live Updating" checkbox selected.
    What I did was...
    - removed any references to other playlists in the Smart Playlist options.
    - changed it to "Genre" "IS" "Podcast"
    - added "Plays "Is Less Than" "1"
    - Selected "Limit to" (in my case 25) "items" checkbox. (I coincidentally, also chose "by Artist" but it didn't matter.)
    - Unselected the playlist, under the Podcasts tab, while the iPhone was connected...
-- Sync'ed the iPhone once without it selected.
-- reselected the Playlist under the Podcast tab of the iPhone options, and
--- re-synced with the playlist now selected again.
I have to say I am more than pleased that it not only is keeping the same order in iTunes as well as on the iPhone, but it also removes ON-THE-FLY! the podcasts as I completed listening to them - in the iPhone, without any sort of syncing enabled.  I had always hoped that would work someday.
    Thank you Apple.

  • 'Playlist is' criteria breaks Smart Playlists  on iPhone 3G?

I am using the 'Last Played and' 'Playlist is' criteria for my 3G's Smart Playlist. This method works great in iTunes but does not seem to update on the 3G. Essentially, the music track I just played does not remove itself from the playlist.
Using 'Playlist is', I have tried to target static and smart playlists. Neither work.
Interestingly 'Last Played' does update when used by itself on the 3G.
Has anyone seen this behavior and is there a work-around?
    many thanks in advance
    Graham

I am having the same issue. It's really frustrating trying to figure out what criteria will or will not break the live updating of the smart playlists on the iPhone 3G. Is there a maximum number of critera you can specify? Please Apple could you document this?

  • IPhone 4, iOS not syncing my SMART playlists of Podcasts

    So weird...
I listen to a LOT of podcasts, and I have several smart playlists, with live updating.
I can rate them, and group them by theme, etc. And I don't have to put the whole podcast list (from "Podcasts") on my phone, if I don't want to.
So far, for years, it's been awesome, and flawless.
But now, with the new iPhone, and new iOS, the playlist is no longer on my 1st-Level in "playlists" on my iPhone, it's tucked into a "Smart Playlists" folder (which is where it is in my iTunes, but it didn't next folders before).
Okay. That's fine. It helps fight the clutter... but there's NO SONGS IN THERE !
I have a "Smart Bands" folder, with several bands, and THOSE sync just fine. Those songs are all THERE.
Does this have something to do w/ Podcasts specifically?
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    AAGH !

    Okay, I tried something.
I changed the TYPE of file from Podcast to "music" and now they sync...
But not being able to alias Podcasts in Smart Playlists? That's not cool

  • Can't create a smart playlist of podcasts in iOS 7?

I've got to iPhone 4Ss, one on iOS 6, the other on iOS 7. On the iOS6 device, I have created a Smart Playlist that contains my podcast subscriptions for the last two weeks. This playlist is the major use of my iPhone. However, on the iOS 7 device, The Recent Podcast playlist is there in the Music app, but it is empty. Is iOS 7 forcing me to listen to podcasts only through the useless Podcasts app?
