ITunes 7.1 broke iPod mini syncing

All worked fine until the 7.1 update. Now every time I connect my iPod mini (6G, through firewire), about a third of songs and audiobooks is re-downloaded onto the iPod. This is absolutely uncalled for, as those files were not changed.
Worse yet, now the iTunes syncs audiobooks one way only, meaning that the bookmarks for audiobooks listened on the iPod are lost upon syncing with iTunes. Unless I am doing something wrong, this seems like a serious bug.
Does anybody else have the same problem and maybe found a solution? Or ss there a way to revert to the previous iTunes update?
Thanks

From what I've seen, there's no reason to "copy" the artist field into the sort artist field... If you leave the sort artist field blank, it appears to sort by the artist field. So you only need to set the "sort artist" field for any items that you want sorted differently from the artist field.
I'm going to wait a few days, because I suspect very strongly that some very useful Apple scripts will show up at, for example, this site:
http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/
The one I want is a script to take all of the songs I've selected and set the 'sort artist' to be the artist name in "last name, first name" order. So then I just select all of the songs that are by a single artist, run the script, and probably 98% of my desired sorting changes will be made. I see some of the first scripts for manipulating sort tags are showing up, and I bet it won't be long before some really useful ones appear there.

  • IPhone isn't recognized by iTunes 9, but my iPod mini syncs fine

Uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled iTunes (multiple times), put iPhone in recovery and DFU modes, and nothing. Windows only recognizes it, and when I put my iPhone in recovery mode, it was "installing the device software", but later failed saying "the file specified could not be found". Apple Support was of no help. Any suggestions?

I've gone through the steps of that article already. I'm all set with the USB port and the cable. It's been recognized perfectly on my computer before, I just connected it a few days before I updated iTunes. The software on my iPhone is fairly recent too (3.0.1). My iPod mini is several years old and is still being recognized by iTunes. The Apple Mobile Device service is running and I've restarted it several times. I have McAfee VirusScan 8.5 and Malwarebyte's Anti-malware.
Is the iPhone recognized correctly on another computer?
Since the issue didn't occur until you updated iTunes, you may want to look at the security software on your PC.
You can try restoring McAfee to defaults, as suggested in this application conflict article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1609
You may be able to bypass some conflicts by putting the PC into a selective startup mode, as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2292

  • ITunes has killed my iPod-mini

A few days ago iTunes started saying my iPod-mini was "corrupted" and would no longer sync (or add new stuff).
I was suspicious that this was not true, but in order to ever add anything else I had no choice but to allow iTunes to reset the iPod, which means it is now EMPTY.
Then I resynced and iTunes claimed to have put everything back on the iPod, but when I try to eject the iPod-mini, iTunes hangs, and I have to "Force Quit." Meanwhile, the iPod-mini remains empty!
So now I have an empty iPod that iTunes claims has content and whenever I try to eject the iPod, iTunes crashes!
My nano seems to be syncing without any problems.

    More details:
Since trying to eject the iPod-mini from iTunes crashes iTunes, I also tried ejecting it from the desktop. When I do this NOTHING happens.
Naturally, if I just remove it. I get an error message and the iPod is still EMPTY even though iTunes claims to have just put all then content on the device!
    This does not make sense!

My Ipod mini syncs, but when I go to play, no sound.  I've tried multiple speakers and headphones. No Go.  What next?
My latest problem is that the Apple site will not recognize my equipment by it's serial number.  I know the mini is old, but I like what it did for me and don't necessarily want to "upgrade".

  • My itunes says that my ipod is synced with another library when it is not and cannot update or sync without wiping it and all its data

My itunes says that my ipod is synced with another library when it is not and cannot update or sync without wiping it and all its data
    Can anyone help me

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your iPod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
All media content will be erased during the first sync, but you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • ITunes cant communicate with iPod Mini

Recently I plugged my iPod mini into my computer to update the songs, only to have my iPod freeze up. After a while it worked again and all my songs were gone from my iPod. When I plugged it back into my computer and opened iTunes to load all the songs back on, iTunes froze and wouldnt work, when I unplugged my iPod a message would pop up saying something like "the software needed for iTunes to communicate with IPod is missing, please reinstall iTunes" after reinstalling both iTunes and the iPod software, I still have this problem.

    So...
You have updated to iTUNES 5.0 and iPOD Mini version 1.4?
Some reports are up around the web about people having iPOD update problems after installing iTUNES 5.0.
Apparently, Apple will be issuing an update next week to fix the problem.
My iPOD updates fine, but I am getting a pop at the beginning of each song when I play iTUNES through my stereo using my Airport Express with Airtunes.
Never had a popping problem with the previous version.

  • Itunes is sayin my ipod is synced to another itunes library how can i fiind that other library

This is driving me crazy i cant sync music on my ipod my music is gone from itunes library and everytime i sync my ipod to itunes it says "this ipod is sync to another library"So how do i find that old library?

    - It sounds like you cousin messed up your computer.
    - I would search the computer and see if the music is somewhere on the computer..  If it is just sign nto iTunes on the computer and authorize the computer and import the music.
    - You can redownload some iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - You can transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - You can transfer non-iTunes purchased music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - After everthing in in your iTunes library, connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup

  • Synch not working, ITunes won't recognize ipod mini

With a new pc, my mini is no longer recognized by my itunes set up, very annoying. Ipod is working, but now "locked" to old setting, won't reset or resynch with each charge.
Have tried replugging in, flicking "hold" toggle, holding down select button, all to no avail. In "file" section, where I once was able to select "synch," it is no longer available (with light lettering).
When I run diagnostic, screen reads "no ipod detected," even though mini is plugged in.
This Itunes also locked up a month ago, and started gradually wiping out songs I had previously on my ipod.
Any help in this area would be appreciated. I'm considering heading to the Apple store, but don't know if they'll be able to help, and the support on the Itunes site is fairly poor.
    Help?

    I'm having the same problem.

  • ITunes plays songs but iPod mini skips whole songs

I have an iPod mini with the latest version (1.4) as well as the latest version of iTunes for Windows. I have imported songs into iTunes and they play fine, they also seem to upload to my iPod just fine. But when I go to play these certain songs on my iPod it skips right over them. It shows the song and acts like its about to play but just as it should start playing it skips to the next song. Anyone heard of this?

Hi Josh and welcome to Apple Discussions.
First, make sure you've played at least some of the purchased song in iTunes to authorize it.
If you've played them in iTunes and the still skip, try this. De-authorize the computer in iTunes/Advanced menu, then to re-authorize it. You re-authorize it by playing one of the songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store in iTunes. It should ask you for your Apple ID and password, then the computer will be authorized again. Sync you iPod with iTunes, and those songs should play again.
Another common cause of this is not having the latest version of iTunes. If you don't have the latest, you can get it from here.

  • Ipod mini sync issue

Cannot sync 2005 ipod mini to 2013 itunes.  Any ideas?

Usually Apple doesn't actually replace the battery, but instead places it with an exact model.  So yes, your data will be lost, so be sure to back it up to your computer if at all possible before sending it in for repairs/replacement.

  • ITunes no longer recognizes iPod mini

Things with my ipod mini have been going downhill lately. Along with reduced memory (down from 4G to 3.77G last time I checked) and a weaker battery life, then it had when I first bought it. Now for the first time, the ipod is NOT SHOWING UP IN iTUNES! I realise the thing is getting old (almost 2 years) but I'd really rather not replace it yet, until it totally craps out on me and stops working (is that time coming soon?).
When the device was new and I connected it to my PC via the usb port, iTunes would open and the mini would be displayed on the left hand menu. Now it isn't showing up at all, I've given it some time, and it still isn't present. The mini beeped a few times when I first connected it, and the logo showed the cross circe with the "do not disconnect" logo. and then it went to the battery filling, only the graphic does not show the battery filling with the logo "charging" as it used to but instead the battery is 1/4 full and there is no movement in the graphic. Every once in a while it flashes back to the "do not disconnect" and beeps before returning to the battery graphic.
The iPod is of no use to me if I can't update music on it, unless I want to listen to the same songs over and over, but I'd really like to be able to update them, that's what I bought it for. Last time I charged it via the usb port on the computer it had difficulty (it did show up though) and I thought it had to do with my music library finally exceeding the mini's limits. The mini wouldn't charge and instead kept trying to update the libray of music, when it was too much for it to handle. I managed to go around the obstacle by deleting music off of it and dragging new music from my library onto the mini's icon in the menu (then it was in the mini's music.
After that incident I haven't had a need to update music on the mini and I have charged it using outside ports, which have work normally with the mini behaving like it used to and charging completely.
I'm hope my post is understandable, I'm not a very technical person, so my language might be amatuerish. I really would like to enjoy my mini again though so any help is appriciated.
    Thanks, Ashley

Update: I disconnected the mini for a while and just now tried re-connecting it. This time the ipod showed up in the menu after a minute or two. It still doesn't want to charge through the usb, but I can continue to use the wall port for that if I have to. Good news is I can now update my songs again =)

  • Plug in 30gb video ipod Recognised in iTunes as a Silver ipod mini.

this other day liek a week ago i plug in my ipod video 30GB with software 1.1.2 and iTunes recognises it as a Silver iPod mini.. so then when it finishes updating as an iPod mini i have no more videos/photos/song photos/etc. but when i re-plug it its ok..

If everything is working fine now, I wouldn't worry about it. If it happens again, post back.
A glitch can occur when iTunes reads the iPod and cause this. It can be because of a bad USB port, an older version of iTunes, a USB hub, etc.

  • To big Itunes library for my Ipod mini

I've got a problem. I just bought my Ipod mini and I'm a novice so I wonder if you need to create a "Library selection" as Itunes suggest when I plug my Ipod in to the computer? I thought I just might create playlists and ad them to my Ipod. My problem is that I haven't figured out how to get the playlists on to my Ipod.
    Please Help me...

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    The option to
i Automatically update selected playlists only
on your iPod is one of it's least documented features.
Fortunately, it's fairly straightforward when you make your way to the iTunes Edit menu > Preferences > iPod tab.
There's a picture of what to expect towards the bottom of this page .
    Any further questions, post back.

  • ITunes 8 - thinks my iPod was synced with another library

Installed iTunes 8 - no issues with installation.
Plugged in my iPod - message pops up that my iPod is synced with another library (which it has not been). Choices are to Erase and Sync, or Transfer Purchases.
If I Erase and Sync I'm going to lose all of my playlists.
But if I Transfer Purchases won't I lose anything I've downloaded since the last time I synced?

  • "localdisk" icon shows up in itunes instead of my ipod mini

when i plug my ipod mini in, itunes does not recognize it. instead of my ipod mini icon showing up, an ipod icon that says "localdisk" appears in itunes. i have tried resetting it and that doesn't work. i have also tried re-installing itunes and that doesn't work either.
    help!

    Stephanie,
I believe your iPod is in disk mode, instead of regular mode and that's why it shows in iTunes as "localdisk".
Try this: Connect your iPod, open iTunes. Wait until the software recognizes it and then click on the iPod icon on the bottom right of iTunes.
When the new window opens, click the "iPod" tab on top and then the "Music" tab a bit below. Under the box, if there's a check next to "Enable disk use" then uncheck it.
    Does this help you?
