ITunes 7.1 Locked

I recently upgraded to 7.1 and now whenever I try and launch the application, I get an error message stating "The iTunes Music Folder is Locked, is on a Locked Drive, or you don't have permission".
I have gone through all folders regarding my iTunes folders, even the iTunes application itself and nothing is locked.
Why can I not use iTunes? What is the deal?

I´m having trouble launching the new iTunes 7.1 after the upgrade.
Any time I try to launch iTunes it quits and gives the option to Try Again, Report (which I have), or Quit. Even though I re.try many times, restarted the comp, and verified permissions, it just will not work!
By the way, I keep my Music files on an external HD.

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

  • ITunes Extras file locked on External iTunes Server  - Help Appreciated

    Hi all,
    Here's the set up.
I've just put our entire iTunes library (it's all housed within one iTunes account) on a new LaCie Wireless Space NAS unit. So basically everyone in the household (me, wife and two kids) can access the same music library etc.
I've pointed everyones ITunes preferences to the external library on the NAS and they can all individually access and play tracks OK.
The problem seems to arise when, for example my son fires up iTunes on his MAC starts to play some tracks, but then my daughter wants to do the same, she cant get on to the music library on the NAS as we get an error message that says- "The iTunes Extras is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"
I've tried trashing various .plist files, checking access privileges, but cannot seem to solve the issue.
She can access the library OK when it seems no one else is doing the same, it seems to be an issue when multiple users try to access the same iTunes library on the NAS.
Any help, suggestions or work-arounds would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Is iTunes running on MB A when you open iTunes on MB B? If so, that is probably the reason iTunes is saying the file is locked. Only one iTunes can read/write to the DB files at a time.

  • ITunes keeps on locking up...HELP.

    Hey guys,
Recently iTunes has been locking up a lot and I had to press altctrldel and stop the process. It keeps on saying Not Responding every time I try to exit and it is not doing anything. I tried to uninstall and reinstall iTunes and its associated applications, but I have still had the problem and do not know why it is happening. I have a relatively fast computer with 3.0 ghz P4 processor and 2 gbs or Ram. I don't understand why this is happening. Let me know if you have a solution. Thanks
    What I've done so far:
-Checked for plug-ins and removed, there were none
    -Recreated iTunes library
    -Removed iTunes preference files
-Uninstalled iTunes and associated apps and reinstalled
    -Checked for Viruses, spyware, adware....etc

I just got an iPod Touch for Christmas, and halfway through loading my CDs onto it, iTunes now locks up without fail. I cannot even complete one CD without having to restart my computer. This pretty much renders iTunes completely worthless and disallows me from adding my music. Please advise soon or I'll be forced to return all of the products I have purchased.

  • ITunes Library File Locked

    Hi,
Have been using iTunes 10.5 on my WinXP machine - no problems.  During a movie download tonight, iTunes crashed.  Tried to reopen and got the infamous error "iTunes Library file locked or on a locked disk..."  Tried several remedies listed.
Verified that MyMusic folder and contents are not READ ONLY.  I am unable to rename, edit, or move the file...she's locked up tight.
Tried repairing the Windows Registry assignment using the Tweak UI utility discussed in another thread.  No joy.
Tried starting iTunes from another account on the PC - iTunes boots fine.
Pulling my hair out (what little is left)...Any ideas out there ???
    HELP !

Fixed.  For those using WinXP...Here's what I had to do:
It was a file properties thing as mentioned in other posts, but to change the file properties...
    1.  Boot Windows in SAFE MODE by holding F8 down during bootup
    2.  Log on as Administrator
    3.  Navigate to the iTunes Libary.itl file (My Music/iTunes)
    4.  Right Click and pull up the file properties
    5.  Under Security, re-add the user account to the file permissions
    6.  Then change file permissions to FULL (Read/Write/Edit...)
    7.  Reboot & Viola !
Once you unlock the write protected status (which got defaulted to the Adminstrator account), iTunes opens just fine.

  • I upgraded my OS in my Mac and now I cab't open iTunes. Error message says the iTunes library is locked, in a locked disk or I don't have permission to write.

I upgraded my OS from Lion to Mountain Lion. After that I can't access or open Itunes anymore. Message says " Itunes library is locked, in a locked disc or I don't have permission to write permission for this file.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • ITunes library is locked or on a locked disk windows 7

    Hi all,
I recently downloaded some software called Jamcast which allows you to view iTunes / Spotify files on your Xbox360.
Since then my iTunes has been having problems.
I have a large number of mp3s on here 110Gb so it's causing me a bit of annoyance.
I'm getting the error iTunes library is locked or on a locked disk...
If I hold down shift I can get into iTunes and do the scan for media which brings back all my music but it loses the smart playlists and then when I come out of iTunes and go back into it brings back the same error message again.
My computer only has two accounts Mark administrator and Guest so I doubt it is a permissions error.
Also I seem to have far too many folders in my iTunes folder in my Windows 7 library.
    I have
    iTunes
    subfolders
    iTunes Media
    Previous iTunes Libraries
    Mobile Applications
    iTunes Music
    iTunes Plug-ins
    iPod Games
    Album Artworks
    iTunes1
    subfolders
    iTunes Media
    Album Artwork
    and
    Playlists
    Recorded Radio
    License Backup
    iPod
and my iTunes library fles I have
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    itunesPrefs (2).xml
    iTunesPrefs.xml
    sentinel (2)
    iTunes Library.xml
    iTunes LibraryBackup.itl
    iTunes Library Extras (2).itdb
    iTunes Library Genius (2).itdb
    iTunes Library (3).itl
    iTunes Library (2).xml
    iTunes LIbrary (2) Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library (2) Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library (2).itl
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    itunes Library Genius.itdb
    sentinel
A lot of the itl and itdb files seem to have a sort of locked icon on them.
Please could you let me know what the xml files and itl files do in iTunes thanks.

Copy the following (bold text) into a new document in Notepad (Don't use Word or Wordpad - they add formatting and it won't work)
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas]
    @="Take Ownership"
    "NoWorkingDirectory"=""
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas\command]
    @="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F"
    "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas]
    @="Take Ownership"
    "NoWorkingDirectory"=""
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas\command]
    @="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"
    "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"
Save it under "All file types" as "ownit.reg". Save it to your desktop.
Double Click it and click OK when prompted. You will now be able to take ownership of ANY file on your sytem with just a right click.

  • All tracks in my iTunes Library got locked

I don't know how or when this happened, but I was just going to paste some lyrics into a song in iTunes 9.0.3 and the Lyrics pane was grayed out. After checking things out, I find that most of my tracks in iTunes are somehow locked, as if they were DRM protected, although most of what I have was ripped by myself. I was able to convert the one track to mp3 which gave me an unlocked copy, but I don't want to have to convert thousands of songs.
I also somehow got all my tracks in iTunes UNchecked not long ago and didn't know it until I was trying to play stuff on my iPod and nothing was there. Getting them checked again wasn't a problem but I am pretty sure it happened on its own. Now iTunes is locking tracks on its own. I hope someone can offer a solution.

I solved it myself. I moved the whole iTunes folder to the root level of the hard drive it was on, rather than inside the user folder and now I can access lyrics and other options for each track in my iTunes Library. I don't know why after several years of no problems, iTunes suddenly decided I shouldn't have access to those features.

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.
