ITunes 7 - 2 user accounts 1 music folder sharing issues

I just downloaded iTunes 7 this afternoon. I imported some music from my CDs into my account. My wife and I have a shared music folder. I then logged onto my wifes account and added the music to her library. Her accound moved the music files from the original folder to an Unknown Artist folder losing the file information. Does anyone know why this is happening?
I apologize if this is topic has already been posted.

If you have a folder on the hard drive called anything you want (Shared Files for example) and leave it in the root directory, anyone should be able to access it. If one of the user accounts doesn't have administrator access, writing to that folder may be an issue.
To fix this, control-click (right click) and select get info. Go to the permissions tab. Use the little arrow next to 'Details' to make sure it shows the details. Select the group 'everyone' and allow them to 'Read and Write'. Click on the checkbox 'Apply to enclosed items'. You'll need to do it from an administrator account.
Should sort you out.

  • Library problems with two XP user accounts accessing music in shared folder

I'm sorry if this has already been answered; I have not been able to find the answer. My wife and I each have a different user account on the same Windows XP machine. I recently combined our iTunes libraries into the shared folder on the computer. I correctly pointed iTunes (in each of our accounts) to the correct location for the music files. I did an "Add Folder to Library" to make sure each account had all of the music. When I did this, I got duplicate listings of all of the songs that also had exclamation points. When I did a "Get Info" on these songs, I found that each song was correctly pointed to the correct file location. I laboriously deleted each "exclamation point" song one at a time (in each account). Now the problem I have is that whenever my wife or I close iTunes and the other person opens iTunes in their XP user account, none of the songs can be found. The best way I've been able to resolve this is to (unfortunately) delete the entire library, and do an "Add Folder To Library" to find all of the song locations and include all of the songs back into the library. Surely this can't be how this is supposed to work.
    So, my questions are:
    - Do I need to add new albums / songs one at a time to avoid duplicates (rather than use the "Add Folder" for the entire iTunes music folder again)?
    - How do I setup iTunes so that my wife and I can each go into iTunes in our seperate XP accounts and have all of our songs right where we left them (WITHOUT having to delete the entire libary and "add" again.)
FYI: I'm using the latest version of iTunes and (again) I'm using Windows XP.
My wife and I really want to each get a new iPod Nano, but if I can't trust iTunes... forget it.
    THANKS!!!

I have this setup at working. Two accounts with all files stored on a shared folder, mine is a network drive. Each account has its own library and can access all files. We also use one iTunes account for rare purchases.
This is how did initial setup:
Make a folder in the shared folder. I called mine itunes.
This is where iTunes stores its files.
With second account point iTunes at shared folder.
Import the folder you created earlier.
This worked for me without duplications. The only complication is that when importing from CD with one account the other doesn't know it. The other account must do import on the folder for the CD just imported. We keep track of this with a spreadsheet updated to show which account has which CD files.

  • I have itunes on one computer. my account says that I have 2 computers authorized. I want to have itunes on both users accounts on my computer. how do I do this? thanks for any help!

I have itunes on my computer in my main user account. I want ot have the same itunes on the other user account on my computer - under the apple account info- it says that I already have 2 computers authorized - how do I find out which 2 they are talking about?  the only button nearlby is one that says to 'deauthorize all' etc.... thanks,. I have a pc.

You can only deauthorize all your itunes computers once a year, so I would avoid clicking that at the moment.  Log onto the 2nd user, and open itunes.  Go to Store> Authorize This computer.
As an alternative, you could point the 2nd user itunes library to the primary itunes folder.  So both users would use the same itunes folder.  You can do this by holding shift, clicking itunes icon.  There should be an option to browse for an existing library.  Locate the main computers itunes folder. (Most likely under: C:\Users\*Account name*\Music where *Account name* would be your main user accounts name.
    Good luck!

  • Can I install iTunes in separate user accounts on Windows Vista 64-bit?

    Hi,
My wife and I use different user accounts on Windows Vista 64-bit. Before I go and mess things up on my computer, I wanted ask some questions:
    1) Has anyone has successfully installed iTunes to multiple user account?
    2) If so, has anyone successfully shared the same music root directory for 2 different iTune instances.
I'm thinking with iTunes very tight integration with the music files (for indexing/searching, etc), that it would be bad to have add/change/delete on the same music root from 2 independent installations.
    Experience OR opinions welcome!

) Has anyone has successfully installed iTunes to multiple user account?
You don't install the iTunes application more than once. Each user account in Windows will have its own iTunes library.
If so, has anyone successfully shared the same music root directory for 2 different iTune instances.
Many people have done so. This should help:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
Note that iTunes has no folder-watching capability, so if you add a track in one user account, the other user will have to add that new item manually, either by using the Add To Library command or dragging the item into the iTunes window. There are a couple of potential solutions from other developers, though:

  • Can i use a 2nd iphone if i install itunes on another user account.when i tried to create a second library i messed up both phones, the second one now has all my contacts and when it sends txts it either says its my other phone or email address

can i use a 2nd iphone if i install itunes on another user account.when i tried to create a second library i messed up both phones, the second one now has all my contacts and when it sends txts it either says its my other phone or email address. i can cope with the first phone and getting it back on itunes but dont want to syn the 2nd phone until i know it is independant of the other one. Does it matter that both phones use the same itunes store account?

Deleting the account on your phone only removes if from your phone.  The account and it's data remain intact and doing so will not effect your daughter's phone.
To do this, first go to Settings>iCloud on your phone and turn any synced data (contacts, calendars, etc.) to Off, and when prompted, choose to keep the data on the phone.  When finished, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  Then set up a new iCloud account with a different Apple ID and turn any data you want to sync with iCloud (contact, calendars, etc.) back to On.  This will upload your data to your new iCloud account.

  • How can I share my iTunes library between user accounts in iTunes 11

Since upgrading my iTunes library to Version 11 I can no longer share the library between user accounts on the same Mac.
The 2nd user is asked to create oir use an iTunes library, but when it is pointed to the Media folder it cannot share it.
Previously in iTunes 10 it all worked fine.
How can this be done please?
The library is in a shared areas that we both have Read/Write permissions to.

that works for anything he purchases after he creates the new account.  What about his current music that currently resides in my itunes library?  How can I get his current music out of my library into his new account/library??  Thanks..
Copy it to his computer into his iTunes library and authorize his computer with the iTunes account used to purchase them..
You cannot tranfser items from one iTunes account to another. Purchased items remain part of the iTunes account is was purchased with.
iTunes account - used to purchase items
iTunes library - where purchases (and CD RIPs) go on the computer

  • One iTunes Library, multiple user accounts?

    Hi,
I recently purchased a new iMac 21.5" for my Family and want to share my iTunes library with my wife's OS X user account so we can both access the same music/media on both accounts. Is there an easy way to do this? Maybe place the files in a "shared" folder?
Also, What's the best way to move my iTunes media to my new Mac from my old PC?
    Thanks,
    C

The Apple store will move everything from the pc to the mac or you can call Apple Support and they will help you do it.
If you type "share itunes library" into the search bar at the top of this page next to "Support" and find articles to show you how to do this.

  • Sharing itunes with different user accounts

I just got Windows Vista. I have the latest version of Itunes. I'm trying to set it up so that my wife and I can share songs with different user accounts in Windows. I followed all the instructions. I moved the iTunes music folder to a public folder. But everytime I log off my account and return, itunes can't find the song files. Any suggestions?

They can be transferred to another iTunes library but not another iTunes account.
    Just copy them.

  • Can only export songs/ringtones to itunes on one user account

I can't for the life of me figure out why it works fine on one user account, and on the other account (there both admin accts), it appears to be exporting to itunes but, nothing ever shows up in itunes or in the itunes music folder. Any ideas on this? I have seen a few other posts with similar problems but have not been able to find a solution. Thanks in advance.

  • Sharing iTunes Library between user accounts...possible?

    Hello all,
I'm an experienced Mac user but am currently setting up a new iMac for my family. I've never had more than one user account because I'm the only one who uses my macbook but now my family wants 3 different user accounts for the new iMac in their home.
Because I only use my one user account at home, I never thought about the fact that different user accounts would also split up iTunes music libraries. If I import music from a CD, I would like that to be accessible and available when using any 1 of the 3 user accounts. Is this possible?
For example, my mother and father purchase CDs together...so they both own the same albums. They want to share music on the iMac, but if I import discs twice it takes up twice the amount of time and much more importantly twice the amount of space. How can I get around this??? Can one user access another users iTunes library and make that the default folder?
Thanks for your help as always!!

What you need to do is locate the iTunes Music Folder that contains the actual music in a location that is read/writable by all users. By definition, the security on each user's home folder keeps others out.
A common suggestion is to locate the music in the /Users/Shared/ folder and make sure that everyone has read/write privileges. Bear in mind that means that anyone will be able to delete all the shared music.

  • Sharing iTunes btwn two users -- getting new music to show up for both

I'm setting up a new PC with Windows 7 and, at the same time, setting up two new iPhones.  In trying to keep my wife's iPhone linked to her Apple ID and my iPhone to mine, I followed the directions here -- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203 -- and set up iTunes on each of our Windows user accounts and put the iTunes Media Library files in a public location we can both access.
My problem now is, when one of us adds new music to iTunes (to the shared, public folder in Windows), it doesn't automatically show up in the other's iTunes library.  I know that I can manually go in and use "Add File/Folder to Library...", but, is there a way to have this happen without user intervention?
Many thanks for any help you can provide!
    Bobby

    Don't do it.. !!
Apple says specifically don't put your iphoto library on the TC.
    And I quote.
    iphoto network no no.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
    See further
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6692100
The TC has no media smarts at all.. none.. it is completely dumb stupid hard disk in a router.
If you put libraries on the TC apart from being slow.. because all files must be transferred via the Mac running itunes you then have no backup and no way to backup your files.
Get a large external drive or get a proper NAS with built in iTunes server. (although exactly how well they work I am not sure).
You still should not put your main iphoto library on the NAS but you can put a copy.

  • Mirroring itunes in all User Accounts using OSx Lion?

Hi do we share the same itunes in all of our i=user accounts on our imac using OSx Lion?
This must be a simple question but I seem to be missing it.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Two approaches. Do you mean a single library (as in what you see in iTunes, playlists, etc.)?  Or do you mean the same media but each person has different libraries?
Chris CA's instructions on sharing iTunes music libraries between multiple user accounts - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8973804
Similar procedure but you only share media, not the whole library:

  • ITunes will not open and my Music folder is empty

When I try to open iTunes (even when holding shift) it says "The "iTunes" folder could not be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "Music" folder."
My music folder is empty, however, the music is still on the computer - I have the same amount of space remaining on my hard drive as I did before this happened.
Any suggestions? I have it all backed up fortunately.

Hello, Following are quick tips to try. Along with a knowledge article on how to completely remove itunes
    1. Create a new user, attempt to launch iTunes and see if it opens
    2. Run Disk Utility on the user account that is not able to open iTunes, relaunch after repairs are complete
    3. Go to Applications - Move the iTunes application to trash, Reboot Mac, Download and install latest iTunes again and launch

If you find it is still not opening the following article below is a complete removal of iTunes.

  • How do I set up my wife's iphone in itunes ,on her user account on same laptop as mine?

Hi, sorry if this is a common question but I couldn't see it pop up when I started typing it...
Basically I already have my iphone working nicely with itunes on my laptop. Up until now my wife has been happy with doing the absolute minimum with her iphone but now wants to get some music put on there,
I've created a user account in her name on my laptop and installed itunes there as well.
I've added some music to her media file.
But when I plug her phone in, nothing happens.
If I then open itunes manually, it shows the music in the library, but there's no option to sync with the phone and nowhere I can see to set it up as a new device etc.
    The computer is authorised.
    Any advice gratefully accepted.
    Many thanks

    Hey there RedRock1966,
It sounds like you are unable to see your wifes iPhone in iTunes when you connect it on her account. I would start with this article to help troubleshoot that named:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1275
If the issue persists, I would use the troubleshooting in this article:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1591
Ensure that your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Install software updates on your Mac.
Note: If an iTunes update is available, apply the update.
Check USB connections. iOS devices require USB 2.0 to function properly. If you're not sure your Mac has USB 2.0 ports, refer to the computer's specifications.
Disconnect other USB devices and connect your device directly to a USB port on your Mac.
    Restart your Mac.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling
