ITunes(7.3.1) Issues. File size adjustments. Burning to CD

I notice that there seems to be issues with 7.3.1 perhaps this is one.
Main Issue. I have 'imported' some mp3 files of non copyright speeches from an mp3 CD into my library .I would like to re-burn these (Using Toast 8.0.1) to a single CD but the total files size is 811.9MB, too big for an mp3 CD.
I copied these files into a folder and tried re-importing them individually using the import function experimenting with different settings in Preference>advanced>importing>custom but to no purpose. The file sizes remain stubbornly as they were.
Secondary Issue. I notice that inserting an mp3 CD into the mac does not result in it being recognised nor playing automatically even though the preferences have been set to "Begin Playing on CD insert".
I have visited the usual suspects, Discussions , iTunes support but to no avail...why don't the files reduce in size when I set the system to do so...each file imported individually...the help material is quite specific but dinada!
Life is too short; any passing Samaritan?

Because you are not changing anything with files.
When you use Import for MP3, AIFF, WAV, AAC or Apple Lossless, it simply adds the file to iTunes.
If you want to convert them, set your *iTunes prefs* -> Advanced - Importing to what you want to convert to.
Select the file in iTunes, then menu Advanced -> *Convert selection to* {what is in yoru prefs}.
Importing only converts audio CD to what is set in *iTunes prefs* -> Advanced - Importing.
*Secondary Issue. I notice that inserting an mp3 CD into the mac does not result in it being recognised nor playing automatically even though the preferences have been set to "Begin Playing on CD insert".*
Begin playing on CD insert applies only to audio CDs.
If you want to add these files to iTunes, use File -> Add to library.

  • File sizes when burning in different formats

Like many people, most songs in my playlists are MP3s/MPEG.
If I want to burn 20 songs as an Audio CD (to play in a car's CD player) and select same in Preferences>Advanced, I understand that the files will be uncompressed to something like AVI format.
My playlists show (at the bottom) file sizes of 50MB to 70MB. Obviously, the real size when uncompressed is something nearer 700MB. It means a bit of guesswork as to how many songs I can burn on one CD.
Similarly, when burning Data CDs, the file size will be much reduced.
Is there a way I can ascertain the exact file size when burning in different formats?

+"It means a bit of guesswork as to how many songs I can burn on one CD."+
For audio CDs, there is no guesswork required. At the bottom of the playlist that you are about to burn, you will see the number of songs and the total time. If the time is under 80 minutes, the list will fit on a normal audio CD. If it is approximate, like "1.2 hours," click on it and it will change to exact hours, minutes, seconds.

  • ITunes startup and store issues "file already exists"

    Hi there,
I got a problem with iTunes starting up and i cant solve it with the suggestions available in the handbooks or discussion forums.
    A) When i start up itunes i get an error message saying "the file already exists".
I can then browse my music and shop as usual.
    B) When i try to buy something in the store a similar error message pops up, "File already existent"
    What i tried so far:
    - Deinstalled itunes and all other Apple producs + associated files and folders.
    - System checkup incl. viruses and various cleanups
    Operating System is Windows 7.
My Devices work on other machines without any problems.
Anyone has a solution for what file might be existent or where else the problem can be?
    Thanks so much!

    Hello Cuprastar,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like these error messages are indicating there could be a problem with the iTunes library itself.
I would recommend recreating the iTunes library with the help of this article:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
When you do this, iTunes will offer to scan for media files, and you should let it perform the scan.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • File Export, file size huge, burn to disc?

I am new at this and confused.
I created an Album in IPhoto which contains all 4,749 of my pictures. In the Info box at bottom left in IPhoto, its size is 8.4GB.
I exported this album to a folder on my Desktop using File>Export & choosing JPEG maximum quality, full size & include titles & keywords. When I check Get Info for that folder, its size is 22.62GB. That's nearly 4 times bigger. Can that be right?
I want to copy the folder on my Desktop to a CD or DVD . So if I have a DVD that says it can hold 4.7GB, I'm going to need 5 discs to copy the whole folder--?
I have Time Machine backing up my IMac but I wanted a copy of my pictures with their titles to be able to load on a Windows machine. Am I on the right path here?
    Thanks so much!

Sorry to be so fragmented in my responses but I just started to try re-exporting using Original and when I choose KIND: Original, I am no longer offered the option of including Titles and Keywords.
One of my goals is to make a backup version of my pictures which are not tied to the IPhoto software--just in case someday I would need to load them into non Apple-friendly software--basically to have a copy of them in their original format, like they are on the memory cards they were taken with. I see that I can accomplish that by choosing KIND: Original.
However, I also want to be able to preserve all the titles I have given them. I had understood from an earlier post (probably from you) that most photo software would have the capacity of displaying the title files. Is there any combination of choices in the Export menu I can use to produce a copy of my pictures with quality as good as they were originally and keep my titles? I have done very little editing of my pictures so preserving changes is not an issue.
Many many thanks for sharing your expertise.

  • Movie file size when burning to dvd

Another question in one day, sorry!
Ive noticed that the movies folder which contains an imovie project constantly keeps a fullsize quicktime file in there which can be viewed in quicktime, with no need to open imovie. In my case its an 11 minute movie originated from mini dv.
The filesize is around 2.44gig, but when i use toast 7 to burn this to a standard 4.7gig dvd, it only uses around 640mb of space.
Am i getting full resolution onto the disc? and why, when there is plenty of space on there does toast need to compress it down? Id have thought the compression was only necessary in a 'fit to disc' situation.
Would the quality be higher if the full 2.44 gig was being burned to the dvd?

There is data rate limit on a DVD, so what you see is reasonable for an 11 minute movie.
The 2.44 GB iMovie project uses the DV codec, a video DVD uses the MPEG-2 codec, so burning the DV files will do you NO good (except as a backup).

  • Preview & File Size for jpegs problem.Bloating bug?

When adding cover art to iTunes, I am checking the file sizes to be certain I have the smallest size possible to add to my new iPod 16G nano. When connected to the iTunes store and "Get Album Artwork" is selected, I have no way of knowing the size of the images that get installed, except for choosing a song, doing "Get Info/Artwork" then copying and pasting the image in the Artwork window into Preview. Often this Preview image will be identified as around 300+ K in the file size.
So here's the weird part. When I find an image I want, say 240x240 20k file size, I copy it and paste it into Preview and Save As. the Inspector identifies it as 240x240 and 20K in size. In Finder, the file size is identified correctly as 20k. I use this to replace the iTunes artwork that was 350k, by deleting the old image, and using "Add Artwork" in Get Info. The new, smaller image is added. After clicking OK and to check that all is well, I select the song, Get Info, copy the artwork then go to Preview and use "New From Clipboard". Using Inspector, the image is 240x240, but the file size will be huge - 300+K. If I save this copied image and use Finder to check the file size it will be 300+K.
    What is going on?

    Hello Jody,
Very probably, the final image is exported in the native format for Clipboard: which is, "pict." These pict files are invariably "huge" when compared to a jpeg of the same physical dimension but which is of 72 ppi resolution. In other words, pict files are like .tiff files: they normally are not compressed and consequently are much larger files.
So when you do a "New From Clipboard" - the next step should be "Save As" and then select JPEG as the desired image file format.

  • Understanding audio minutes vs total file size

I'm trying to figure out the relationship between audio minutes and total file sizes, when burning files from my library to an audio CD.
I'm using 700 MB CDs, which, on the labels, indicate 80 minutes. The selections I want to burn total 6 hours of audio, but only 560 MB of data, as shown at the bottom of the playlist.
Is the total amount I can burn really limited to the number of minutes?

When burning AudioCDs your are limited to those 80 min.
If burning MP3 disks your are not limited by playtime but filesize (approx 680 MB)

  • HELP! Why has my .txt iTunes Library export shrunk to half the file size?

I regularly backup my iTunes library with both the File > Export (.txt.) and File > Export Library (.xls). Recently I realized that the file size of the .txt exports have dropped in size. This considerable drop is about half of the size of the previous .txt exports. This makes no since, because all I have done is add to the iTunes library, not delete.
    What causes this???
    PLEASE HELP!!
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The issue with Pages is this: no other application on earth can open this document format, and as Apple has demonstrated, Pages v5.5 on Yosemite, cannot be opened with Pages v5.2.2 on Mavericks, which cannot be opened with Pages ’09 v4.3. One has to either export to Pages ’09, or .doc/x. Word Processing on Apple is an island with one bridge to the mainland: Word documents.
OpenOffice and LibreOffice use the same native open document (.odt) architecture. LibreOffice is more actively developed, supports many more document formats (including MS Publisher, Word Perfect, and Visio), and certainly can save as .doc, .docx, and Microsoft .rtf format. I have LibreOffice installed, and that 512KB Word (.docx) document? LibreOffice shrunk that down to a 12KB .docx. It was 14 pages and 60 paragraphs of text. Both OpenOffice, and LibreOffice are intended to be superset replacements for MS Office.
A competent, word processing application on the Mac that is free or inexpensive, and performs as the OO/LO applications? The following are in the OS X App Store, and I held the price below USD$50.
Swift Publisher 3 (DTP) - TIFF, JPEG, EPS, and PDF output, proprietary data format
iStudio Publisher (DTP) - PDF, ePub, and RTF documents, otherwise proprietary
Mellel (WP) - import: text, .doc/x, .rtf, ePub, save as: .mellel, export: text, .doc, ePub, PDF. 30-day trial.
NeoOffice 2014.5 (Office replacement) - (based on OpenOffice, Mac UI). Free edition cannot save documents.
Mellel is probably the most serious word processor, and is designed for writers. Text looks nicer set (kerning?) than Pages.

  • File size changes after color adjustments

Anytime I adjust/edit a photo in iPhoto it results in a saved image that's half the size of my original. I wanted to bump the contrast and print a photo, but the image goes from 4MB to 2MB after a simple color adjustment. Does anyone know how to stop this?

Is there anyway to save the copy without a loss in file size
No. Like I said, it's in the nature of jpegs. Jpeg is a lossy format.
It seems to be an iphoto issue rather then a jpeg issue.
    Don't think so.
When I make adjustments to a jpeg in photoshop and save it, the file size is not effected.
Where are you seeing that reported? I just auto-coloured a jpeg with CS4 and saved it at 9 on Photoshops scale of 12 and the file size reported in the FInder went from 4.5MB to 1.1.

  • Did file size get bigger w/iTunes 8.0.2?

I just downloaded the latest version of iTunes, but I'm finding that every song I download requires me to delete at least two (sometimes three) songs on my iPod to make space for it.
Anyone else having this issue? Is there a way to choose to download smaller files instead?
    Apple: Why?

All songs in the iTunes Store are now iTunes Plus -- encoded at 256 kbps, which is two times the old standard of 128. Their file sizes are now twice as big. The only way for you to get them smaller is to re-encode them at a lower bitrate. It doesn't have anything to do with which version of iTunes you have on your computer.
Also, the importing default is iTunes Plus AAC, so if you want to import songs at a lower bitrate, you'll have to change your import settings.

  • Is there a file size limit on mp4s that can be imported to iTunes 11.1.3?

I've recently upgraded iTunes to 11.1.3, and finding that if I import video files, not all of them will actually import.  They're all using a H.264, AAC, MPEG-4 ODSM, MPEG-4 SDSM codec, but the sizes are varying from 20mb on the low end to 200mb on the high end.  And it appears the larger file sizes aren't being imported.  This has worked fine on 11.0 and earlier, so I don't understand why these files won't import.

I have put on things up to 2GB so far. No issues.
Could be your USB port. Are you sure you are using a 2.0 port (and not one connected via a Hub)?

  • Exported media file size issues Sometimes one size, Sometimes another without making any changes in FCPX?

    Hi there
I'm having some strange issues with files sizes from
    Share>Export Media
I'm not changing anything about the video (just moving an audio track forwards and backwards ever so slightly to try and get it to the correct timing), nor am I changing anything about the way I export the video.
I am always using the EXACT same settings
Sometimes finder states my video is 1.15GB, sometimes its states its 3.8GB
But then when I close Finder down and then go back into Finder again to find the file it states its gone from 1.15GB to 3.8GB
I'm not sure if this is a error with my system or Final Cut Pro X?
By the way I'm running 10.0.5
    Thanks

    Bob,
Well, the issue has gone to press and I have upgraded to Snow Leopard and CS5. Initial tests show that the problem still exists, and that it is  related to the XML tags. The problem occurs both with legacy (CS4) documents and documents created from scratch in CS5. As I mentioned before, it only seems to happen when overrides are applied to paragraph styles.
Here is a sidebar as exported from InDesign. Overrides were applied to the two headlines to modify color, point size and baseline shift:
The file with XML tags, packaged and opened in InCopy CS5:
The same file with XML tags removed, packaged and opened in InCopy:
OK. Now is when things start to get really interesting.
I thought perhaps that exporting the InDesign file as an IDML document, then reopening it, might perhaps fix the problem. But, no. In fact, when I reopened the IDML file in InDesign, the font styles were broken in _exactly_ the same places as they were in InCopy. Apparently, whatever problem InCopy is having with the XML tags is being duplicated by the IDML export. (Do these processes share the same file format?)
For example, here is a title page from the magazine as a screen grab in InDesign. Overrides were applied to the top headline on a line-by-line basis:
The same file, exported as an IDML file and reopened in InDesign:
As with InCopy, when the XML tags are removed, the IDML file reopens in InDesign just fine. Unfortunately, removing the XML tags is not a option. We need them to repurpose the content after it goes to press.
This is a real bug, and for us it's a serious one. I'm surprised it hasn't come up before. Is there any way to draw this to Adobe's attention? I'd be more than happy to share any of these files if that would help.
    Steve

  • Issues in Reducing file size on Acrobat 9.3.1

The text has been merged or split on Acrobat 9.3.1 Pro by using the option "Reduce File Size" or "PDF Optimizer". There is no issue in the earlier version of Acrobat (7.0 & 8.0). We are using the Mac OS between 10.4.11 to 10.6.2. I have attached screenshots for your reference; please look at the Word "Issues" has been split after reducing file size on Acrobat 9.3.1. Is there any other way to do Hi-Res PDF to Low-Res PDF without any issue? Kindly help me out to sustain the best process in future.

I found a similar problem with text styled for small caps. It was fine in the original PDF, but became lowercase in the reduced file. The reduction process probably throws away characters from fonts that Acrobat decides are unnecessary.
I was able to partially solve the problem by combining multiple PDFs (book chapters) and selecting the smallest file size icon at the bottom of the page. Alternately, I chose a web-quality preset, which also worked. The file size might not be quite as small, but the files were good.
