ITunes 7.6 no longer allows sharing a library without copying

Hi,
Until version 7.6 I shared my iTunes library with another account on the same computer by making a soft-link in that other account's Music folder to my Music/iTunes folder and by giving it write permissions.
This no longer works in version 7.6, because iTunes seems to recreate the files "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" with the permissions "-rw-r--r--@". The files are always owned by the last account that used the library.
Giving write permissions to both accounts (through a group), but no write permissions to the "iTunes" folder, in order to prevent the recreation, doesn't work. iTunes will complain about not having write permissions for the folder.
Why has this changed in such a way?
I see no point in using several times the space of one library and to go through synchronisation work over and over again.

I have believe similar problem, I have 2 macs and 2 ipods. I have always synced each ipod separately to each mac. However, I recently took ipod 2 and synced to mac 1, and I was able to transfer songs/vids from mac 1 to ipod 2 successfully. Problem is, now I try to resync ipod 2 back to mac 2, and itunes does not even recognize the ipod, let alone allow me to sync it! Was sharing the libraries in this form and syncing on multiple machines allowed on earlier itunes versions?

Ok, So i was browsing in iTunes just to see what im able to do and i noticed that I am sharing my library with a total stranger. I clicked on the link under "shared" (it has his name) but i need a password in order to access it. i dont want anything from his library i just want nothing to do with his library. Im assuming its been a while that we were "sharing" libraries. The thing is i didnt know about it. It explains why i can never keep a iTunes gift card, it always appears to be out of mine the next day i register the card and i didnt buy anything yet! Have i been hacked? Add music folder to iTunes library without copying

I have an itunes music folder with songs and movies. I want to create a new library using those files. How do i add them without copying them to the new library? When i do the"add to library" it starts copying the flies causing an error because there's not enough disk space.

Turn off the "copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" option in the iTunes -> Advanced preferences.

I just purchased a few songs from Itunes and could not edit the information in the Get Info section of the file. It's greyed out. Any ideas? Has ITunes changed and no longer allows editing.

Has ITunes changed its editing feature for songs, etc.? I just purchased a few songs and found that I could not edit them using the "Get Info" feature. The information is greyed out and does not allow editing. Among other things, I usually like to eliminate the word "THE" from group names for easier alphabetizing in my library. Thanks for any help.

ITunes album view no longer allows me to jump to an album artist using keyboard

In album view, I've always been able to use the keyboard to jump to an album artist. For instance, upon hitting "dr" my list would jump down to Dr. Dog. Upon the last update, I believe, this feature stopped working. The only way I can do this now is by scrolling. Is it possible to turn this back on or do I need to start using a different view to browse my music?

It's working ok for me on my Mac (iTunes version 11.2.2). What happens when you start type part of or the full artist name when in album view ? If I have left-hand sidebar enabled then I need to click on the right-hand side of the screen first so that it becomes active, but either with or without the sidebar showing typing part of an artist name takes me to their first album

Itune update - songs no longer located in the library

Hi, I'm having a problem each time Itunes gets an update. At least 20% on my itunes cannot be played any longer because itunes cannot locate the song on the itunes library. You get one of these exclamation mark. Is there a quick fix to sync again all those lost files?

Did you put any sound files there? Because if you didn't, that will explain why it's empty.
The ~/Library/Sounds folder is where any sound files that you add go, and they are only available to you as the "logged in" user (if you have other users with their own accounts, they each have their own ~/Library/Sounds folder). Apple doesn't put anything there.
The sounds that come with Mac OS X will either be in the /Library/Sounds folder (which is the shared location for all users) or the /System/Library/Sounds folder (don't mess around with anything in the /System folder!).
But I doubt your problem has anything to do with the sound files. Try deleting your sound preferences file, or even just clicking around in the Sound system preferences until they start working again (seriously - I had one Mac that had some audio problems after upgrading, and just turning things off and on a few times eventually worked. It seemed somehow tied to Dictation, so try twiddling those settings too).

Can no longer see shared iPhoto Library

Suddenly, however, neither of us can see the other's library in our list of albums on the left hand side of the screen as we used to. Any ideas about what might have caused this?

Allowing existing iPhoto library to copy on import

When I initially setup my iPhoto library I told it not to copy photos to the iPhoto folder on import. Since then I have added about 4300 photos complete with notations, keywords, dates, etc. Now I really wish that I had just let iPhoto take care of handling the actual files as well, since I have just made a jumble of them all :P Is there any way to get iPhoto to copy all of these files into its own structure without losing all of the work I have put into the library? I know you can select the preference to copy or not while importing, but this doesn't copy pictures which have already been imported. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

No, but there may be a way you can import them roll by roll and save the keywords and roll organization. You will not retain any albums, books, slideshows, etc. Only rolls (with different dates probably) and keywords.
First follow Tutorial #1 to write the keywords back to the original files in the library. Now create a new library with the copy provision enabled and import all of your original source files. That library then should be essentially the same as you have now as far as roll names and keywords. The roll dates as I've said probably will be the latest modified date of any file in that roll's folder. But that can be edited in iPhoto.

ITunes Home Sharing No Longer Allows File Transfers between Apple IDs???

It used to be that if my wife purchased a song in iTunes with her Apple ID, I would seemlessly and automatically get a copy of the song downloaded to my iTunes account with my Apple ID via the Home Sharing functionality. Has this functionality been removed?? It seems that the only thing I can do now is stream the music she's purchased when I'm home, but I'm no longer able to download my a copy to play on my own iOS devices.
I've made sure that both of our computers are re-authorized, and home sharing is active, but no luck.

I'm up and running. Spoke with Apple and they had me go to : preferences, network and create a new location. That seems to have reset something. I had to reset all my devices back to my main network that had stopped working. The guest network will not let Home Sharing work, only the main network.
Others have been able to use Home Sharing without clicking "Done" after typing in their password. After you click "Done" the Shared disappears in iTunes.

I don't know why it stopped working but it happened a month or two ago but the option on this phone that's usually all the way to the left when you select your device but now its not and I don't know what caused it. ive already tried troubleshooting my problem but have found no help.

HT1386 Some iTunes purchased music no longer plays on my phone 4s.

Recently my Iphone (which I have had for almost a year with no issue) 4s filled its memory with "Other" and it was coded yellow on the status bar.... This "other" filled my entire 32 gig phone which didnt allow any other information to be stored. I resynced my phone to factory settings to try and reset my phone. Once I did that the "other" was gone but now a good portion of my itunes purchased music no longer plays on my phone. I dont have iTunes sharing so thats not the issue....My other iPhone 4s is fine and all music plays ok....

Try syncing all the music off your phone (by unchecking Sync Music on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing), then back on.

Is the problem that you can create them in iTunes, but they are empty on the iPod itself? If so, I had that problem, and the issue appeared to be that playlists that used MediaType=Podcast didn't seem to transfer. If, on the other hand, I gave all podcasts a Genre of Podcast, it worked better. In general, with the older iPod classic, I found that playlists based on MediaType didn't work that well.

Are you running any of Symantec's (Norton) or McAfee's Internet security products or anything similar, or an antivirus/antispyware application? Some such utilities treat an upgrade to iTunes as a new application and can block the application from connecting. So you have to go in and reset the utility to allow iTunes.
The same thing can happen if you upgrade the security product (this has particularly been a problem with recent McAfee upgrades). Check the settings for your utility. If iTunes is still listed, remove and re-enable the exception for iTunes. Consult your utility's documentation for the appropriate procedure. If you have Norton, you can find instructions for that utility on Symantec's web page for iTunes. You may also need to check the built-in Windows firewall as well.

ITunes 8.1 no longer gives option to skip adding duplicate songs to iPod

When I begin to add songs to my iPod or a playlist, I've noticed that iTunes 8.1 no longer gives me the option (through a small pop-up window) to skip transferring any songs that already exist on that iPod or playlist.
This was a great feature: I could drag a whole set of songs and rely on iTunes to weed out any songs from the transfer that would cause duplicates on my iPod or a new playlist.
The option said something like you are about to add duplicates and allowed me to select "Skip" or "Add".
I can't find this option in Preferences. Has anyone been able to re-enable this?

I have this same problem. Did you find the solution? I sat here and played on iTunes for about 3 hours. I even tried uninstalling and installing it. Nothing works for me.
