Itunes 7.6 / osx 10.3.9 / airport /remote speaker / airfoil - bad combo

since latest upgrade to 7.6 iTunes will not connect to remote speaker on airport express base station. Translated into English iTunes says something like:
"The remote speaker (insert airport name) is not available with this version of iTunes"
So I figured Airfoiling the audio would do it, but guess what - now Airfoil also skips and hangs in the audio stream.
Extremely annoying - anybody know a fix or know if Apple is going to fix all these 7.6 issues soon?

turns out that a firmware update (6.2 -> 6.3) on the airport express bassstation solved the problem. Why isn't such information passed along with an itunes update?

  • Airport remote speaker vanishes

I have had an ongoing issue that requires a weekly reboot of my Airport Express N router.
Fairly regularly, usually every 7 days, my Airport Express will vanish from the remote speaker list and vanish from Airport Utility.  This unit is my gateway and my internet connection through it is not interrupted.

turns out that a firmware update (6.2 -> 6.3) on the airport express bassstation solved the problem. Why isn't such information passed along with an itunes update?

  • ITunes - An Error occured while connecting to the remote speaker. (-15000)

I have been using airportexpress for the last 9 months with no problem. I used to use Windows Vista (32bit) to play itunes music and stream the music to the airportexpress which connects to my living room AV system.
Couple of days ago, I rebuilt my machine now running Win7 (64bit). Since then, I am not able to stream the audio to the airport express. Whenever I select the remote speakers, wait for about 30 secs and I get this error : An error occurred while connecting to the remote speakers "livingroom". An unknown error occured (-150000).
Does anyone experience this ? From the same machine, I am able to connect to the airport express using the airport utility. Wireless is working fine. I just not able to stream my music to it.

moehadi, Welcome to the discussion area!
This is typically caused by a firewall or Internet security software running on your PC. Please read the comments in "Error -3256 or -15000 when streaming to AirPort Express base stations using iTunes".
Also there is "iTunes 8: Unknown error -15000 when attempting to stream music to devices connected to AirPort Express with AirTunes".

  • Who's kidnapping my airport remote speaker?

Every once in awhile, right in the middle of listening, I get a window that says: "The remote Airport speaker is currently being used by someone else. Please select another speaker from the menu at the bottom of the iTunes window"
What the heck is this?? How can MY speaker be used by somebody else? How can I get rid of the kidnapper?

    Hi there!
I'm not sure if another thread here hasn't answered your inquiry to some
extent or another; but one does address a question concerning what
computers are in the wireless network and some older software utilities:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=711260&tstart=0
The above link leads to a download for "airport management tools" v 3.4
    and AirPort Management Utility asks for Airport 3.4 or Later, & won't go;
so when I check, my system is well beyond (and at one time had) the
asked for part. Other tool works fine; tells the user information about
the bandwidth and up/down speeds; that says it's a Client Monitor.
If you can make it all work, post back!

I'm having a problem connecting to my remote speakers when I want to play some music through iTunes. A display message appears stating: The remote speaker is not compatible with this version of iTunes.
I have the newest version of iTunes i.e. 7.0.2 and an Airport Express base station with all my software updated.
Does anyone have any ideas what I should do?

  • Itunes error: remote speaker not compatible w/ 7.1.1.5

Arggghh, I just upgraded to itunes 7.1.1.5 (as suggested by Apple), and now I can't connect to my Airport Express Base Station from itunes. I get the following message:
The remote speaker is not compatible with this version of itunes.
I have the latest firmware upgrade 6.3 for the base station. It worked fine for months on itunes 6 and 7.0, don't understand this. Help! (FYI I'm not running bonjour on my PC, and I dig Archers of Loaf.)
    Dell PC   Windows XP

OK I got it working again. I'm not sure exactly what did the trick, but I'd recommend the following:
    1. Repair your wireless modem connection via your taskbar (rick-click on the Wireless Network Connection, Repair)
    2. Start itunes while the Airport Express Setup Assistant is running
    3. Restart your computer
    4. Keep trying, after 2 days it's working again (???)

  • ITunes 8: I can no longer connect to remote speakers via Airport Express

Cannot connect to my remote speakers, worked before iTunes 8"
I have restarted the computer, iTunes, QT 7.5.5, run disk utility
I get the following error code (-3256) Apple KB research says:
AirTunes: Error -3256 when streaming to multiple AirPort Express units
You may see this message: An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker speaker_name . An unknown error occurred (- 3256 ).This occurs with iTunes 6.0.2 or later.SolutionIf you use a third-party firewall or router, make sure that it is configured to permit UDP traffic.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303157
I followed the KB link, tried KB solution, then I sent this off to Apple.
"Mac G5 2.0 Ghz, OS 10.5.4 just installed iTunes 8, one (1) Airport Express connected to remote speakers. Firewall under Sharing in System preferences does not offer firewall access. Firewall is under Security but "Advanced" is grayed out.
Cannot connect to my remote speakers, worked before iTunes 8"
I have restarted the computer, iTunes, QT 7.5.5, run disk utility, unplugged the airport express.
My G4 PowerBook running an earlier version of iTunes connects without problem.

I just got off a 30+ minute phone call with an Apple Support rep about this. I'm getting error -3256. The rep was patient and tried hard to solve the problem, but was basically clueless. I have a case number and was encouraged to call back tomorrow to speak with a product support specialist.
This stinks. AirTunes is my primary way of playing music from my computer. With no obvious way of rolling back to iTunes 7, this is a big deal.

  • Itunes crashes on addition of artwork to movie folder and apple tv (2nd generation) will not see itunes while itunes plays playlist over wireless network to airport express??

I have 4 non apple pc exhibiting same issue. Whether you have ten movies on board the pc or 500 on external storage Itunes locks up after you "get info" and try to add video cover from IMDB whether the art is in my pictures on PC or off USB key / external storage. Very frustrating to the extent that I bought a macbook thinking that it may be a non apple issue and bingo same issue whether films on macbook or on nas/ external usb. Effectively itunes may be made to crash by adding artwork!
2nd Issue noticed at weekend I have a small music library of approx. 35gb music in itunes music folder when a playlist was being played within itunes and airplay was selected to an airport express that is connected to distributed music system in house all works well during party. Guest have access to DJ app via remote app or control of content being player. My kids disappeared into the front room and while playlist on notices 2 things. The ipod touch ( 4 mths old) would not connect to apple tv player 2nd generation while airplay on to music system and the infra red remote remote worked fine but apple tv would not see video files in itunes while airplay on. When airplay disabled all absolutley fine , re- enabled airplay and apple tv bumped again. I have a wireless N router and have successfully had 2 apple tv 2nd generation working off itunes video files without issue. There are delays but both are seen in remote app and both players see itunes folders. I would have thought video streaming to apple tv players sucked up more bandwidth that one airplay to airport express and one apple tv 2nd gen.
    Anyone experienced same

OK - I managed to fix this. Will document for others.
I started to think it was a firewall thing. So I turned off both my Windows 7 firewall and my BT Home hub firewall. It started working!
So turned back on the BT home hub firewall - still working. So it must be a windows 7 firewall.
Went in and checked that Itunes was there as an exception... Yep. So why still not working?
Found out that the entry in my Windows 7 firewall said I-Tunes - but when you looked at the details button it wasnt pointing to a program - it was just blank.
So added a new entry and pointed that at the I-Tunes exe file.
    Now all working...

  • Help: Airport Remote Speakers No Longer Showing in iTunes

    Hello!
After 2 years of streaming music to my remote speakers via iTunes and Airport Express (AX), I've had my first real issue. I have not been able to figure this out, and am at my last strand of sanity.
My AX is connected to a pair of speakers in my living room. The AX is on my home network via ethernet cable. I have a Windows XP desktop running the latest version of iTunes in my bedroom. This desktop is on the home network via ethernet. Last night, for some unknown reason, I no longer had the ability to see my remote speakers in iTunes. I tried everything. I turned off the firewalls, reset the routers, made sure that "share via ethernet" was selected in the AX admin utility, but my efforts were futile.
Ive not messed with any "network" settings. I usually leave things as is, yet I've never previously had this "disappearing remote speaker" issue before.
    Things to note:
I do not run any sort of windows firewall.
My Macbook seems to stream music just fine wirelessly to the AX when I turn iTunes (latest version) on.
Any advice / help would be very very very much appreciated.
The only request I have is, I am not as computer savvy as most of you are. If you do have a solution, please break it down so that someone as slow as I am is able to make sense of it and implement it
    Thank you so very much.

Hello GeekDoc. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The fact that your MacBook is successfully streaming iTunes to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is telling me that the issue is most likely not iTunes or the AX itself, but with the Ethernet path between your desktop PC and the AX.
As you may already know, iTunes uses AirTunes to stream audio to an AX. Although AirTunes sounds like it can only travel wirelessly, it actually can be transmitted by wire as well. AirTunes is based on Apple's Remote Audio Output Protocol (RAOP). What you may not know is AirTunes takes a minimum of two steps to do the audio streaming: 1) Establish a link with an AX, and 2) Send the audio data.
In order to do both, AirTunes will open ports: 5000 to establish the link, and (typically) 6000 to pass the audio data. I know you said that you are not running any firewalls, but you may want to double-check that none are running between the Ethernet path between the desktop and the AX. I suggest that you (temporarily) disable any firewalls, spyware, or antivirus programs on your desktop ... or any other program that prevents network traffic to see if this eliminates the problem.

  • Win XP : problems for itune to connect the airport remote speakers

    Hi there,
My config is iTunes installed on my PC, a Tecom wifi router and two airport express base stations connected to speakers in different rooms of my flat.
At first, iTunes has no problem for seeing the airport stations and the music goes well through the wifi.
After two or three days, the PC doesn't see the stations anymore in iTunes (they actually still show, but in gray) .
If I want them to be seen again, I need to close iTunes, go to "connexions", disconnect my PC from the network, connect again, run iTunes again, and then... it works !
That's a bit boring. As strange as it could be, the act of shuting down my PC every night and running it "fresh" every morning doesn't help.
Has any one any suggestion on how it could work better ?

Hello Deb Parks. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'm not sure if, by product key, you mean the encryption password for your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) wireless network. Is your AEBSn's wireless network currently running encryption (WEP or WPA)? If so, temporarily disable it, and then, see if the PC can connect.

  • Itunes remote speaker using Airport Express and Extreme

I have purchased an Airport Extreme and Airport Express, so I can listen Itunes music on my stereo system. For some reason, there is simply no remote speaker selection button on the bottom right of the Itunes windows. Does it has to do with the fact that I am using an old Mac OS X?
My Macmini has no airport card, so I connected the ethernet to the Airport extreme, and plugged the Airport express few feet from the base. Nothing but an orange tilting light comes out of the little box. I can surf the net perfectly but the Itunes is ignoring all my investment on the couple of Airport boxes i purchase...What I am doing wrong?

Yes, I thought that purchasing the Airport extreme as
the ethernet interfase directly connected to the
MacMini, was almost the same as having the airport
card inside the Mini. Where did I get lost?? I have
the extreme directly to the mini, and an express
plugged somewhere close and nothing happens...
The problem is that the mini can only stream iTunes to an Airport Express via Airport. While you have connected it to an Airport basestation, as far as the mini is concerned, it is working via ethernet because that's how the data is leaving the system. It doesn't have an Airport card, thus it can't stream iTunes content to an Airport Express.

  • Itunes - airport express - remote speaker not compatible?

Airport Express unit (AX) connects to my network and verified to be connected to the network just fine...but on itunes (v. 7.4.2.4) on my desktop (Dell Dim E510 with wireless, Windows XP, Linksys router WRT350N with AX for airtunes)...when I switch speaker to the AX/stereo unit, comes back with message - "the remote speaker xxx is not compatible with this version of itunes"... I've battled this issue for a long time -- any idea what is the problem?

OK I got it working again. I'm not sure exactly what did the trick, but I'd recommend the following:
    1. Repair your wireless modem connection via your taskbar (rick-click on the Wireless Network Connection, Repair)
    2. Start itunes while the Airport Express Setup Assistant is running
    3. Restart your computer
    4. Keep trying, after 2 days it's working again (???)

  • I have just changed internet providers from BT to Virgin, and now my iTunes doesn't show any of my airport express devices.

I have just changed internet providers from BT to Virgin, and now my iTunes doesn't show any of my airport express devices.  I assume that I have to reconfigure them to the the new wireless but how do I do this frmo my PC?  Thanks

I would recommend that you start by performing a "factory default" reset on each of your AirPort Express base stations. Once completed, you can use the following Apple Support article to configure each base station for streaming.

    Hello Hornet12,
Indeed, iTunes 10.2 or later will be required to utilize AirPlay.
    Using AirPlay

  • ITunes upgrade to 6.02 destroyed my Airport Express Airtunes network

upgraded to 6.02 last night, opened iTunes this AM--lower RH corner no longer shows option to use computer speakers or my networked home theater speakers. Airtunes worked flawlessly in 6.01.
is there any way to restore my airtunes network without downgrading to iTunes 6.01?
would upgrading the OS to 10.4.4 fix this?
not sure if this belongs in the iTunes for Mac thread or in the Airport Express thread--mods feel free to move
    thanks

No answer from others but I seem to have fixed the problem by unplugging the Airport Express from the wall (i.e unpowering it), waiting 5 minutes, then plugging it back in. Light went yellow for less then a minute, then back to green, and after restarting my Mac and reopening iTunes the Airtunes button was back, and I can now choose the multiple speakers option and thus hear music through my home theater and on my iMac in the other room.
