ITunes 7.7 & Disk Utility killed my iMac Optical?

I updated to my iTunes to version 7.7. About 5 minutes afterwards, I tried to open an ISO file in Disk Utility to burn a CD.
Disk Utility locked up. I waited for 2-3 minutes before force quitting. I rebooted and when to open the ISO again.
The ISO opened, but there is no burn option now.
iTunes knows / remembers the drive (Optiarc DVD RW AD-5630A)
System Profiler reports:
No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly.
Just curious to see if I am the only one.

  • Trying to use Disk Utility on my iMac --

I have had some extreme slowness on my iMac, particularly with Mail (launching and retrieving emails takes forever) so I am trying to use Disk Utility to see if I can locate and fix the problem. I'm trying to use the version of DU that's on my MacBook Pro and am connecting it to my iMac via firewire 800 to do this. I restarted my iMac with the "T" key held down to make it into a target disk and it comes up on my MacBook Pro desktop. The trouble arises when I try to use Disk Utility from the laptop to verify and repair the iMac disk -- Disk Utliity in my MacBook Pro gives me an error that reads "The disk "iMac" could not be unmounted."
I have all peripherals unplugged from the iMac and have only the firewire 800 cable plugged into it. Any idea what I'm going wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

try starting up your iMac with the install disk that came with it and launch DU from the install disk.

  • Disk Utility killed my external hard drive

I was having a problem with not being able to erase files from my external WD 2T MY passport HDD, and so I decided to use disk utility. Now the drive won't mount. When I run disk utility now, this is what I get. Please help. I have many files on there which I need. I can live with buying a new drive, but I can't recover the files if the drive won't mount.

Thanks for all the comments. It looks like my drive is heading to the big round up in the sky. But I am able to copy the files off of it to other drives . So I went out and bought a new drive which I am using. My new question, which is related, I use this for my Time Machine files. Is there a way to migrate those files to the new drive, or do I just start over from zero? Thanks

  • Ipod shuffle 3 : impossible to detect it on mac (finder, itunes and disk utility)

    Hi,
ipod shuffle 3 : impossible to detect it on mac (finder, itunes and disk utility), but it works, I can listen music. Do you have a solution for me ?
the same on windows... no détection on plug
    thanks
    Fred

Does it still charge when connected?  You said it still works with headphones.
It's possible that the connection port (the headphone jack) on the shuffle has become faulty.  It has different connection points, so it's possible for it to work for headphones (and charging), but not for data.  It's also possible that the USB cable is bad, if you have only one and no alternate way to test it and confirm it's working.
However, you can try these other things.  Shut down the Mac and disconnect all USB peripheral devices, including any hub.  Use this procedure to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
Start up Mac with nothing connected, except for standard keyboard and mouse (for a Desktop Mac).  Connect the shuffle to a direct USB port.  Check with iTunes, Finder, and Disk Utility to see if there is any improvement.
If that works better, experiment with connecting other USB device, to see if there was some type of USB conflict, or maybe overloading of USB bus (for power).

  • Disk utility verify drive error

When I run disk utility I receive the following error. In reading previous posts I discoverd that I needed to use the OSX install disk. So I get it showing in the utilities window on the left side and attempt to get disk utility running by following this path on the disk -- Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Double clicking disk utility has no result.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
The error when running verify disk from disk utility on the iMac:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair

As Doug has said, & indeed you have tried....you need to run diskutility from the OS install disk. Or more accurately, you need to run diskutility when booted from the install disk.
The following ( from diskutility help) should explain it clearly.
Start up your computer using another disk.
To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc and restart your computer holding down the Option key, then select the Install Mac OS X disc and click the arrow.
    Open Disk Utility.
If you're using the Mac OS X Install disk, follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it., and then choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility.
Select the startup disk in the list of disks and volumes, then click First Aid.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. Status at the bottom of the window. If you can't see it, be sure you selected the hard disk your volume is on, and not the volume itself.
If the S.M.A.R.T. Status is "About to Fail," back up your files on the disk as soon as possible and replace the disk.
If the S.M.A.R.T. Status is "Verified" or "Not supported," click Repair Disk to repair the disk.
If Disk Utility tells you to look for links to corrupt files in the DamagedFiles directory, two or more files occupy the same space on your hard disk and at least one of them is likely to be corrupt. Examine each affected file in the DamagedFiles folder, which at the top-level of the affected disk. If you can replace it or recreate the file, delete it. If it contains necessary information, open it and examine its data to make sure it has not been corrupted.
If Disk Utility reports "The underlying task reported failure," Disk Utility encountered a problem it could not repair. Back up as much of your data as possible, reformat your disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and restore your backed up data.

  • How do I get my Time Capsule to appear in Disk Utility so I can repair it as instructed by Time Machine do to?

Time Machine twice reported it couldn't complete the backup to Time Capsule, and I should do a Repair Permission on Time Capsule. Unfortunately, it fails to appear in Disk Utility - only the iMac hard drive appears. What do I do?

I found this same question in the archives. I followed the instructions to click on New Image, but there is no Shared item on the left as suggested, so don't know what to do next. Cannot understand why Time Capsule fails to appear when it is plugged into the iMac!

  • Disk Utility - Create encrypted disk images super sloooow

Trying to create encrypted disk images via Disk Utility on my iMac (i7 8GB) is super-slow in 10.8.   It worked quite fast in 10.7, but now it's super-slow and doesn't even seem to ever finish.
    I've tried re-installing 10.8 with no difference.
Anyone else having trouble with this?  Even a small dmg (~200MB) doesn't seem to work.
Unencrypted images seem to work OK (if not a little slow).
I realize that the encryption process will be slower but something is definately wrong with 10.8 disk utility in this regard.  I have 1TB+ free space.  I have tried with another user account as well.
My task was: (new disk image, read-write, 128bit encryption)

Have you tried using Disk Utility from within the recovery mode? (Hold down CMD and R when booting)

  • Disk Utility - Which is latest version?

I have found different versions of Disk Utility on my iMac, the latest of which I find is Version 11.1 (252.3).
Can anyone advise me please if this is the latest version? If it is not I will need to update DU and scrap all previous versions.
    I'm running MacOS 10.5.3.

Version 11.1 (252.3) is the latest.

  • IPod not recognized by iTunes & Disk Utility - Recognized by System Profile

I have a 40GB iPod Clickwheel (4th Gen?) that i'm trying to fix back to life since my mini was just stolen and i'm out on the road on tour all the time. my iPod actually powers up by itself just fine, the battery life is just peachy, and it can run independently without songs (i'm able to look around just as though i had songs on there - i can play games, alter settings, etc etc.).
    However, there's a few things i've noticed!
When i go to the iPod's about menu (when disconnected from the computer), it shows there's no songs, that there's 0 capacity, 0 available - shows that the version is 3.1.1, the serial and model numbers, but the format is unknown.
I've tried plugging the dang thing into my computer to much avail - IF iTunes recognizes it, it says it needs to be restored -- GREAT! so i try to restore the iPod, however, i almost instantly get an error: The iPod cannot be restored because it is currently busy. When i clicked the help tag, it says it's a common problem in iTunes 7.0 - great, i have 8.0.2; and i've tried running everything from a restart on the ipod to a restart on the computer, updating all my system files, running the iPod in disk mode, etc, but nothing seems to make it want to restore.
when i look in system profiler; it shows that the iPod is hooked up to my USB port (which is just fine, and i've never had problems running a click-wheel iPod through that before); however both Disk Utility and iTunes do not acknowledge it's existence. what gives?
is my iPod a goner? how would i go about restoring this so i can use it? I've tried it on my Power PC (Specs below) as well as trying it on an iBook and iMac; with the same results every time. i know it's not the cable, because the iPod actually charged via that cable last night!
    any help!?

If you can get it to show up in Disk Utility, try reformatting (erasing) it in Disk Utility. If that process completes without stalling or errors, quit Disk Utility and run iTunes. Immediately attempt to do another Restore to install the iPod's software and initialize.
If the iPod does not erase successfully (it should take less than one minute for a standard erase) in Disk Utility, the iPod's hard drive may be faulty.

  • I have a late 2012 iMac running osx 10.8.5.  I keep losing access to my internal hard drive.  I can reboot and regain access and it will last for a few minutes or hours.  Disk utility does not seems to help.

I have a late 2012 iMac with an I5 precessor running OSX 10.8.5 and a 1tb internal hard drive.  I keep losing access to the internal hard drive/startup disk.
I can reboot and everything operates as normal for a few minutes or hours but then I lose all access again to anything on the hard drive.  The computer is still up and running but no files can be accessed and certain websites cannot be acessed even though internet access appears to be normal.  Disk utility can only find permission errors related to iTunes which can be repaired only to come back at the next scan (I would not think permission errors would have anything to do with the hard drive crashing).  It does not seem to matter what program I am using at the time access is lost and it can lose access sometimes right after reboot when no program is running.

You will need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during restart and select it) to run Disk Utility/Disk Repair.

  • IMac OS 10.9.4 software updates apparent cause of Corel Painter X3 crash: I have run Disk Utility - no probs there, reinstalled Painter X3 (after first uninstalling X3). What now?

iMac 10.9.4 software updates last week is apparent cause of my Corel Painter X3 now crashing. I ran Disk Utility check - no probs there. I reinstalled Painter X3 (after first uninstalling X3), still no success. Online Mac support suggest I use MacCleaner - tried at online Mac store & was referred to 0800 tech support for guidance - still waiting for reply.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • IPod classic won't connect to iTunes after erase in disk utility

I think my hard drive is failing on my 120gb classic and so I decided to wipe it and start from scratch. Admittedly I rushed into the process and wiped it in disk utility without doing much research. Now it doesn't show up in iTunes but it is showing up on my desktop. Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Hi I had a similar issue with my 160gb Classic
Went through many things with Apple on the phone all to no avail.
Took it to the Genius Bar and managed to get it recognised by iTunes and then restore....but when i plugged it into my MBA or IMac it was not recognised by iTunes and just appeared on the desktop..again.
Given that i am using Yosemite and iTunes 12 and reinstalled iTunes, Apple answer was to do a reinstall on my MBA!
Reluctantly i did this and it worked!!!!!!!!
It was recognised by the ancient iTunes9 before updating to 12 again and it was still recognised....
Just got to reinstall all my music, photos, documents.....at least i have my retro 160Gb iPod Classic to load everything on....
    hope this helps

  • Internal HD "Appears to be OK" in Disk Utility but iMac won't boot

I have run Disk Utility on a brand new 27" iMac, recently updated from the original 10.6.4 OS to 10.6.5.
Disk Utility Repair reports that the drive appears to be OK.
But when booting from the internal drive I only make it to the grey screen with a rapidly changing image of the apple, the circle and slash symbol, and a folder with a question mark.

When I originally launched this system, I transferred my user account from a MacBook Pro running 10.6.5. The new iMac was 10.6.4.
The first attempt went ridiculously slow - reporting that it would take upwards of 48 hours. I killed that process, re-installed a clean OS and tried again, and it completed in about 2 hours.
Everything worked OK for about 3 days, then the computer seemed to loose track of it's own boot partition and displayed the 3 rapidly rotating, grey images described above.
I quick-erased the disk and re-installed the OS. Then I manually installed my apps and data. I upgraded from 10.6.4 (the original install DVD version) to 10.6.5.
Everything worked fine for about a week and then the same thing happened again.
I've now re-partitioned the drive and I'm installing a spare, bootable partition this time, just to see what survives if this same thing happens again.

  • Killed Disk Utility Erase Free Space. Now 0 available

(I erroneously posted this earlier to the Safari forum; posting here again)
I ran Disk Utility "Erase free space" on my iMac G5 250GB boot drive (I had about 130GB free). It ran for about 50 minutes, and got to "creating temp file" and then seemed to hang (thermometer didn't move for 20 minutes). So I force killed it. It seems to have left that "temp file" that takes up all available space since Disk Utility now reports 0 bytes available (and MS Entourage says insufficient free space and exits). I ran Finder "Secure empty trash" to delete 57 files with no error. But Disk Utility still says 0 bytes available.
First Aid "Verify Disk" reports no problems. "Verify Permissions" reports no problems.
Is there a way to regain my available space?
    Thanks,
    Ken

Restart did it. Thanks very much.
