ITunes 7.7 messes up alphabetical order

Hello!
After installing iTunes 7.7 any new import I make is put to the wrong place in the alphabetical order. I use "Album by Artist" sorting, and when I imported an Avril Lavigne album it was put to the letter L instead of A. Similarly Alice Cooper went to C instead of A.
Trying to fix the issue I found the following:
- If I simply sort by Artist, the problem persists
- Even if I set the Artist to something completely different, like AC/DC, the album remains at the very same place. In fact, no matter what I do with the tags after importing, the songs won't budge an inch in the list.
Has anyone else encountered something similar? Any ideas as to how to fix the sorting?

Actually it wasn't enough to edit just one song's sorting info. I had to manually go through every song in the album and delete the sorting info to move the album. Is there a way to mass edit this?
Not that I've found... as you said, the sorting options do not appear when you are editing track info for multiple items. I experimented with this in my own library and when I changed the sort info on one track it moved the entire album. I looked through preferences and didn't see an option related to it, nor when you right-click on a song. When you right click on a song there is an option to "Apply Sort Field" and then it gives you a second menu of different fields available. Not sure if this makes a difference or not, as I didn't have to click on this option in order to get my music to move around. My iTunes library is sorted by "Album by Artist" ... if yours is different, try switching to that and see if it moves automatically for you.
Also, this never happened before 7.7. Is this a new function of iTunes 7.7 that it auto fills the sorting field with Last name, First name? Or could it be the Picard tagger I use to correctly tag the songs? (I am not entirely satisfied how iTunes tags the CDs I have so usually I grab the CDs to lossless AAC, run the tracks through Picard tagger and then add to the iTunes library.)
I didn't do anything special with the tracks in iTunes. The only Sort Artist I see in my iTunes is for a band name that starts with "The" to make sure they are not all grouped in the T section. If it is just a first and last name, I have no sort information entered. Any CDs I have were imported into iTunes (on a different computer, later copied to the MacBook via hard drive). I've never changed track info on songs purchased from the iTunes store.
Here's hoping this gets you somewhere...
Let me know what you find, I'd be curious to find more information on how "sorting" really works in iTunes.

  • ITunes on iphone/ipod -- Artists no longer in Alphabetical Order(!)

    Help!
I recently updated my itunes library on both my iphone and my ipad.  I used seperate itunes libraries (hosted on the same Windows computer) in order to have  a larger "master" library on my ipad since it has more memory.  I did this via using the "depress the shift key while starting itunes" trick to select the library for each device.  That all seems to have worked just fine - I got the library I wanted synced with each device.
Unfortunately, the alphabetical order of the Artists is only "mostly" correct.  As an example, under J, I see:
    Howlin' Wolf
    Humble Pie
    David Bromberg
    J.J. Cale
    James Brown
and the rest of the J's.  Likewise, when I look at the K's, it starts off with J's and a few other seemingly random artists, before getting into the Ks.
How do I get the system to re-alphabetize my library???
    Help!!!

Seems like a bug that I hope Apple can fix soon.  Does anyone from Apple scan these boards?

  • Can anyone explain me why iTunes is just changing song names an messing up the order?

I have different songs that I would like to upload onto the phone iOS 6.1.3
So I copy the songe into a playlist in iTunes.
    Song names are
    whatever_xx-001
    whatever_xx-002
    whatever_xx-020
what does iTunes? It just changes the song names and make a complete mess with the order of the songs:
    whatever xx 1
    whatever xx 20
    whatever xx 2
My question is, if iTunes is not usable for copying numbered songs? I cannot imagine that this tool is so stupid? Or am I doing something wrong?
    Thank you for a hint.

Now I look more carefully at your list, I see what you mean.
iTunes does have a method for Artist sorting if the Sort fields are empty (as most of mine are), but offhand, I don't know much about it to be honest. The glaring issue in the your screenshot is Ministry Of Sound.
If any of the other experienced contributors add to this thread (note the number of points they have) with better advice than I can offer, take it.
In the meantime, start with the Ministry Of Sound and check the Sort Artist field. If you highlight everything by an artist, or a complete album, and select Get Info/Sorting, you see this view:
and if you select just a single song, it's this view:
I assume, unless you tell me otherwise, that the Ministry Of Sound entries will show something in there which is causing iTunes to put them in with the entries for A. Replace it with Ministry Of Sound. If the field is blank (which it will be if there are two different entries in your selection) simply type in Ministry Of Sound. Does that make any difference?
If it does, then check your other entries to see what is causing the issue with them.
You may find the the artist "Joey Bada$$" has been set to sort by Bada$$, Joey.
This screenshot of my Artists column may explain why B.o.B is before Baauer:
If you don't like it that way, change the entry in the Sort Artist field to suit you.

  • I transferred my iPhoto FACES to my mini iPad and: (a) they are not in the alphabetical order I had them in, (b) some of the FACES have been deleted, (c) the EVENTS I checked off in iTunes do not all appear in the iPad?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there.
Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A Finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for the iPod Photo Cache. Trash it. Start iPhoto and try sync again.

  • Itunes 10 imports cd tracks in alphabetical order only.  What setting do I change so it imports the same order as the cd?

itunes 10 imports cd tracks in alphabetical order only.  What setting can I change so that it will import cd tracks in the same order as on the cd?  Any help would be appreciated!  I have this issue on only 1 of my 2 macbook pro computers, so I'm guessing it is a setting issue--but I don't know where to find it.

The apparent order of a burned CD may depend upon how you have iTunes display it - https://discussions.apple.com/message/17827921

  • Alphabetical order of itunes

Alphabetical order typically is organized numbers first, followed by A-Z. itunes organizes this way in all situations except when a number begins the name of an artist. How can I organize my artists alphabetically so that artists beginning with a number will come first then artists A-Z?
For example: alphabetically the artist "311" should come before the artist "Abandones Pools" and I would like it to be this way. Right now, "311" shows up after the artist "Zero 7". However, the artist "M83" shows up before the artist "Mae". I want the number to come first alphabetically in all situations. How do I do that?

"+Alphabetical order typically is organized numbers first, followed by A-Z+"
There is no 'typical'. Different computer systems use differing character-sets that have letters first or numbers first. This can based on their ASCII numerical value or a customized sort program within the software.
I do not believe that you can change the way iTunes internally sorts the data.
You can, however, manage the 'Sort Artist' &/or 'Sort Album' fields for any song file (or group of files). You may have to be creative to get the numbers 'floating' to the top of the sort. i.e. - Putting a leading character such as a '.' in front of the numeric Artist or Album. Figure it out for yourself if it is truly important to you.

  • I have transferred my iTunes library from windows 7 pc to new windows 8 pc. Music was in alphabetical order by surname but new pc has some by surname some by first name and some not in alphabetical order. How can I get sorted?

Question  Hi - I've transferred my iTunes library from windows 7 pc to one with windows 8. My library was in alphabetical order by surname but after transfer is now some by surname, some by first name, and some not in alphabetical order. How do I sort this out and also make sure that new downloads list by surname alphabetically?

Sorting in iTunes is often controlled by selecting different column headings. The sort order for any given column may be further modified by a sort value, e.g. Sort Artist affects the sort order of Artist. If you transferred the library properly all of the metadata should have remained intract and you simply need to select the a column that sorts as you want. If you had to import the library then there is the potential for tagging effects that could mean metadata entered previously didn't import with the media. Note that iTunes has no mechanism for automatically deciding which values are in <Forename> <Surname> order and could therefore be sorted as <Surname> <Forename>. The only automatic process drops leading articles (a/an/the) so that "The Doors" sort under D as "Doors".

With using any version of iTunes, whenever I import songs into my library using the "add to library" function, iTunes adds those songs in songs' alphabetical order. This is pretty annoying since it does not preserve the logical track number or even the album sort order (for example when adding 2 albums stored in a unique folder). Anyone has any ideas ? Been stumped for a while....!!!

hi i had the same problem today when i updated my itunes to latest version. however, i have just found my songs in the 'itunes media' folder. this was accessed through 'my music'  then keep clicking through until you find itunes media and all my library songs were in there and i then just added these files to my library and all were restored however, i have lost all my playlists but at least my 700 songs are back. very dissapointed with apple that they have let this happen with their latest update, the previous version was miles better than this one . hope you find them. stevo

Yeah - not really. Sorry - but you will need to get it fixed so you can back it up. You are going to want to Restore your new iPhone from that backup when you get it, so it will really be worth it.
As soon as you get your new iPhone, set up automatic iCloud backups, or if you don't have Wifi, then it is really important to get into the habit of backing your device up weekly to iTunes.

  • Can you rearrange videos instead of settling for itunes alphabetical order

I have a couple u2 videos and the Jack Johnson concert on my ipod. When I downloaded the concert to my computer it listed all videos in alphabetical order, it even mixed the u2 videos with the Jack concert. I just want a way to make the concert play like it is supposed to, not in alphabetical order. How do I rearrange the concert to fit Jack's set list and not Apple's Alpha order?
    dell inspiron 8600   Windows XP

iPods, unlike iTunes, don't support folders or subfolders for videos or music. So, for now, you'll have to make do with playlists.

  • Why is the Apple TV Gen 2 not showing my library in alphabetical order when shorting, It's ok in iTunes.

Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?
From the notes for the release:
iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

How are you viewing your library? In Song view or Album View?
If in Album view pull down View > Show View Options and select Sort by: Artist, then: (whichever choice you want here).
If in Song view I like to see the album artwork so pull down View > Show View Options and select "show album artwork" and close the small window. Then click on the column that contains the artwork and sort it by Artist.

  • Each of my playlists on ITunes has songs in a particular order. I can move them around as I wish. 1 playlist has all songs in alphabetical order

I have several playlists. I can place songs on any of the playlists and move them up or down so they are in a set order. I was trying to move one particluar playlist to my IPod Shuffle. In the process of doing so, the songs on this playlist converted to alphabetical order. I can't move them back to the order I had them and I'm frustrated. How do I reestablish control of this particular playlist so I can move the songs back into the order I had them? I can still move any song on my other playlostys, but not this one for some reason. Thank you for your help.

I found the answer ... You have to go to the upper most left column (above the numbers) and click to place an arrow there. That was the only playlist I didn't have an arrow showing. Once I did this, I could once again move the songs in the order I wanted.
    Yes!!! :^)
