ITunes 7 closes immedately upon opening

Hello all,
I'm running a WinXP Pro laptop PC which I generally keep pretty clean (as in no spyware, viruses, garbage, etc). I had been using iTunes 6 for a while with no problems, but then it began closing every time I tried to open it.
I downloaded the iTunes 7 two days ago and installed it with no problems, but 7 also experiences the same problem. I double-click the desktop icon or open it from the start menu, and the iTunes application window comes up, but while the wait-bar is about 1/4 when it says "Accessing iTunes Store" the program immediately closes. No error message, no warning, nothing.
I uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime, rebooted PC, then installed them fresh. Same problem. I've searched Apple's KB, and can't find a solution there. I've tried removing my "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" as suggested in one topic, I've ensured that any firewall software is up-to-date (actually it is disabled altogether), no luck. Quicktime opens fine on its own.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advacne,
Stu

EUREKA!!!
I don't know what prompted me to do so (other than pure frustration...) but I started my computer in Safe Mode (hit F8 while Windows is starting). I was able to open iTunes, albeit very slowly. It complained of being unable to access the iTunes store, which makes sense since Safe Mode disables network connections. But rather than crashing the program, this was just an error message that I could "OK" out of and then play around with the program.
So I then chose the Music list from the left-hand side-bar (default startup was iTunes Store--possibly the root of the problem??) and let iTunes rebuild my library. After this, I closed the program, exited Safe Mode Windows, and restarted the PC in normal mode. Sure enough, iTunes started on the Music list instead of iTunes Store list, and didn't crash!
I went to play a song I had purchased and was prompted to authorize the computer--interesting, since I never de-authorized it (unless it does so automatically when uninstalling as I previously had...) but still had the correct Auth-Count for me. Now everything seems to work just peachy--I can even access the store!
b noir, thanks for the pointers. Hopefully the Safe-Mode solution can help others too (it looks like you're very active on this board).
Over and out,
Stu

  • Audition CS6 closes immediately upon opening

    Hello,
Although it worked perfectly before Aud.CS6 now closes immediately upon opening.
"Adobe Audition has stopped working" the error message says.
I believe there must be a glitch lurking somewhere in Windows 7 but I have no idea how to find it.
Maybe there's a setting, somewhere, which can be changed.
If this problem is familiar to anyone who knows what to do about it please tell me.
    Thanks for your consideration,
    cobaltgreen

    Steve-
I've uninstalled and reinstalled already and it makes no difference
I've adjusted the compatibility setting for Vista (why is there no setting for Windows 7 ?) and this makes no difference.
I do believe that the problem lies not with Aud.5 but within Windows 7 somewhere.
Can you think of any Windows setting which might have some bearing on the issue?

  • Fix for iTunes and Stuttering Audio Upon Opening Other Programs

This was answered for me in another mega thread, so I thought I would create it's own topic in hopes of helping as many people as possible.
This is a fix for those that have the problem of iTunes 7 working fine alone, but when opening another program such as a game, etc., iTunes 7 begins to stutter and crackle. This fix assumes that otherwise, the program works correctly (gapless, and other issues are not a problem, no blue screens of death, etc.)
    First off my machine:
Dell XPS 3.4 ghz Pentium Dual Core
    2 Gig RAM
Creative SB X-Fi audio card, latest drivers installed
    Observed problem:
Running iTunes 7, audio sounded fine, but opening another program such as UT2004 (first person shooter game) caused iTunes 7 to stutter and crackle.
This was not an issue in iTunes 6.05. I had to upgrade as I just purchased the new Nano.
As an aside, I have another sound card on my computer, an older Layla Echo 24 professional soundcard, drivers are about 3 years old. When selecting this card, this problem does not occur.
    The Fix:
    Close iTunes 7
Upgrade your sound card drivers (just to eliminate that as an issue)
Upgrade to latest Microsoft direct X version:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A -9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en
    Start
    Run
    Type: dxdiag
Click "sound 1" or similarly named tab
Slide bar to "basic acceleration" (mine was at full, and basic is two clicks to the left)
    Exit
Restart iTunes 7, and startup music
    Open game, or other program
Your music in iTunes 7 should now be stutter/crackle free
This may not work for everybody, but it worked for me so I thought I would pass this along.
    Good luck!
(resisting urge to type some snarky remark to Apple that somehow their programmers are indeed as human as Microsoft programmers)...oops...sorry about that.

i was hopeful, but it didn't work. well teh one thing that i had to do diff was the dx updating, WGA doesn't like to work on my system for some unkown reason (yes it was bought at a store) so i found a way around their WGA check for it (i think) the one i got was labeled as dxwebupdate for august 2006. it updated just fine and it looks like it should be the same one as the newest update release microsoft sent out
my system is a home built one and haven't had probs with itunes with any other version, until this one. i'm tempted to just go back to the newest version 6 i have, cause this is rediculous. i can't do anything without it sputtering away at me. i tryed uninstalling it and removing every trace of its exsistance off of the system (including registry) and that didn't work i made sure all numbers were set to the correct values for my sound blaster audigy gamer, i was using some non oem drivers, but switched over just to make sure witht eh newest ones creative had, and it made zero diff.
i'm wondering if it is an issue it is having with sound blaster cards...
well anyways if anyone else has any ideas i would like to hear them

  • ITunes program closes immediately after opening.

Don't know if anyone is able to help, but I have downloaded the latest iTunes program and now everytime I open the program it immediately closes. It is too fast in closing to click on anything within the program. I contacted Technical support who told me to uninstall and reinstall, which I did, but that hasn't solved the problem. Is it a problem unique to me, or a problem with the program. Any ideas on how to solve it?

Thanks for the reply to my message, I really appreciate the time that you have taken to assist.
I have checked Quicktime and that appears to be working normally.
I have checked Task Manager Processes tab while starting iTunes and iTunes.exe appears as the program is opening, but disappears when the program closes.
I have run a full system scan, and apart from a 'tracking cookie' that I fixed, the system is clean.
I then went to the link that you suggested and started to 'troubleshoot'. I initially created a New User Account, and was able to determine that the problem DID NOT occur in the new account. As such, I went to 'User-Specific Troubleshooting'.
I deleted the SC Info.sidb file as directed with no change to the problem. I also removed 'iTunes Plug-ins' as directed with no luck in fixing the problem, as well I removed 'iTunes preference files' with no luck either.
I am unable to 'Recreate my iTunes Library', or 'Check for content files with issues' as directed in the next step as the iTunes program problem that I have only has the program opening for one second before closing.
Again, I really am thankful for your reply, and any other assistance or advice you are able to provide to help fix the problem would also be greatly appreciated.

  • ITunes has stopped working upon opening Windows 8.1

I uninstalled and reinstalled my iTunes and it wont open.....Help??

Can you open iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes)?
If so go to Edit > Preferences > Store and turn off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.
Also go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Reset Cache.
And for good measure sign out of the iTunes Store.
You may find iTunes will now start normally.

Quit iTunes. Go to User Name>Library>Preferences. Locate the file com.apple.iTunes.plist. Move that file to the desktop. Reopen iTunes and it will be like the first time you click on it but your file is not going to be gone.

Hey, I recently updated to the newest version of itunes and whenever i open it it freezes automatically. It pops up and i can't click on anything or do anything.
I've tried reinstalling it and redownloading it multiple times but I still get the same results. I've also made sure to download the one with quicktime.
I tried downloading an older version but it says that my library was created by a newer version and it can't be read. Something along those lines.
Can someone please help me? I'm at my wits end about what to do.

I'm having the same issues! iTunes over the past few days has been freezing on opening (sometimes), freezing during routine playback (sometimes), and when it freezes it refuses to die even when I try to force-quit!
I tried rebuilding my iTunes library as suggested, but it didn't work for me. It froze less than 30 minutes after I went through that rigamarole...

    Hi:
I've run into the same problem recently: open Mail, the gear starts turning, the program quits. Today, I ran across this link in a ebook published by one of the Helpers here at the forums: "http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301584". It appears as though 3rd-party programs will sometimes install plug-ins for Mail. If I read the article correctly, no 3rd party plug-ins are supported for Mail. Anyway, I found one for a program I thought I'd thrown away a week ago. I tossed it, and things have been working OK since. May not be the cure for everyone's problem, but - another thing to try. Go to Library>Mail>Bundles and check. You may have to check both of them. My troublemaker was in the System Library, and not in the Home Library.

  • Facebook app crashes immediately upon opening

For some reason, I can not open Facebook app on iPhone or iPad .it crashes and closes immediately upon opening. Any ideas?

Facebook is the app that crashes the most but others do it as well. I found out that I was having a problem because I took the phone in to a 'genius' as my batterey life seemed short. The genius plugged my phone in to some diagnostic gadget and informed me of these crashes, told me that some apps might be corrupted and that I would need to restore the phone. I wasn't properly prepared to hand it over to him right then & there so told him I'd be back once I had done a backup.
I called AppleCare to see if this restoration was something that I could do on my own as it seemed to involve corrupt apps.
Meanwhile I should state that when an app begins to act up I delete it from the phone and re-download it from the store. This seems to work for a bit.
Here is where, as an old time Mac user I begin to rant a little. I keep my Macs spic and span. What is the deal that Apple hasn't provided a utility for keeping one's iPhone 'clean'? This annoys me. I will know just how annoyed once I put my call into a genius and find out what it's going to take to get my phone running smoothly again.

  • Photoshop is unable to Register/ Auto-Closes upon opening

    Alright,
I've seen at least one other user with this problem, and it's nothing that can be resolved by signing in and out of the Adobe CC application, or even the Ctrl+Shift+Alt and opening trick.
So recently I went with the $9.99 a month package for Adobe Creative Cloud containing Photoshop and Lightroom.
No matter what I try, it won't ever prompt me to input a serial to register Photoshop, therefore any attempts at opening it set off it's anti-piracy measures and make it force-close immediately after opening/ after it finishes loading.
When I am able to try and register/ finalize registration, it wants me to "complete registration by updating your account information," yet the page continuously loops and clicking "Update and Continue" brings me back to the same page. Which disallows me to register Photoshop.
This is the reason why I, and possibly others, are unable to use Photoshop, for it auto-closes after fully loading, since it cannot be registered the same way Lightroom is.
(Lightroom is registered immediately via a prompt message upon first startup asking for a serial code, one of which that is alread inserted/ auto-inserted by the Adobe Creative Cloud application.)
Upon further investigation to prove my point, on my account the only product registered is Lightroom.
    Picture: http://screencast.com/t/0PTyKbUVLA
I've tried the customer support chat.
    Multiple times.
Possibly upwards of 16. Each time the representative went down the same list and copy/ pasted the same answers.
It's sad that I was the one to narrow it down and have the problem figured out.
Apparently I have to wait to contact their special support team on Monday to get this resolved.
Although, it appears the package is "Photoshop Photography Program (For CS3+ customers)," which is not the version listed and advertised all over the site.
(This package would indicate that I would not be able to use Photoshop since I have not owned Photoshop prior to purchasing this package.)
Yet the only package that this applies to is this one:
    http://screencast.com/t/pDylveniasI
    This is insanely annoying.
I would much rather do support via email, and I would also much rather have a more clear product description if the one I selected turned out to have been falsly advertised.
Message was slightly edited by: MrNameloc

I was on their Chat Support yesterday for 6 hours. Possibly a bit longer.
Anyways, after waiting 4 hours for the Technician, the technician walked me through uninstalling Adobe CC and re-installing, but before he had me 'trash' the old preferences.
Below is the file path (highlighted in blue, obviously), and the items that were changed.
opm.db was deleted after changing the OOBE folder by adding the '.old' to it. (In the picture you can see the new versus the old...)
Then afterwards they had me to make sure Adobe CC would not run, then had me to un-install it and re-install. Then had me to un-install Photoshop and re-install.
(Well, they had me to un-install Photoshop CC, delete Adobe CC's preferences, un-install Adobe CC, re-install Adobe CC, then re-install Photoshop.)
    http://screencast.com/t/hjaPTVD2wl
Did not work for me. You/ anyone else could try and save yourself 6+ hours in their support chat.
They even assured me that, on their end, Photoshop had been registered on two machines already under my account; Meanwhile everytime I view my Adobe Products and Services, it still only lists Lightroom.
Trying to convince them that it's registration is pretty hard. I've seen people with cracks of Photoshop CC, didn't work because Adobe CC keeps re-installing itself if it isn't allowed to be connected to the internet. (They were having the same problem as us; Opening Photoshop had it auto-close, and since Adobe CC cloned itself the anti-piracy measures kicked in causing Photoshop to do this.) However, since the cracks only install the trial version, it's still functional for 30 days. Therefore if you're able to find a trial version of Photoshop, or maybe even get a pirated copy, you'll be prompted to put in a Serial; Then possibly ask Adobe for your Serial, register and activate Photoshop, and maybe it'll work.
Only reason why I suggest a cracked copy is because you are able to actually download the trial without signing into Adobe CC.
Plus, it will actually give you a prompt to input a serial key. Unlike the Adobe CC installer.

I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanent?  I have an older machine with Windows XP.

I don't believe mounting the hard drive should be necessary, unless you have several external drives and want your computer to recognise them as folders, rather than drives. I've never had to mount a hard drive, ever. If you don't know how to do it, then it shouldn't be necessary now.
    Try this:
Prepare iTunes so that it can see the external drive.
Make a note of which drive-letter the external drive has been allocated. (Look in Windows Exploer)
Look at the file location for a song. Make sure it plays (and therefore that iTunes has found it). Highlight it and select File/Get Info/Summary>Where: and make a note of the drive letter for that song.
Close and shut down the computer.
The next time you turn the computer on again, connect the external drive
Before you start iTunes - check the external drive in Windows Explorer. Is it ready, does it have the same drive-letter that it had last time? Can you go into the drive and see the files on it?
Once you can, start iTunes. (If the drive lettter has changed, you need to work out why before going any further.)
If iTunes fails to find your external drive, you need to check where iTunes is looking for your Library.
Select the same song you checked before (presumably iTunes can no longer find it). Follow the procedure for locating it. You should be able to see where iTunes thinks the file is. It's the drive that counts. Which drive letter is iTunes looking at? Is it the same one that it was previously (which should also be the same one that the drive has now).
What happens, which step do you have problems with?
