ITunes 7 - Importing Library info

I just setup a NAS into my WLAN network and moved my iTunes library etc. onto that, as my HD was running low on the PowerBook.
I wanted to do this manually rather than Consolidating the library, as I wanted to delete some duplicates etc at the same time.
For that purpose I exported the library (File -> Export Library) in iTunes and created the .xml-file.
When importing it (File -> Import), none of my ratings or play counts were imported though... Ideas of how I messed this up?
Cheers!

My best guess is that this particular problem is caused by having too many playlists or too many items (music and videos) in your iTunes library. I have about 160 GB of music and videos in my library, and about 200 playlists. When I try to rip a CD, I get a speed of about 0.1x to 0.5x. Simply appalling! But when I created a new account name in my computer (go to System Preferences and create a new account name), and logged in to my new account name, I ran iTunes and put approx. 1 GB of music and videos in the library and put about 10 playlists in it, my ripping speed jumped to anywhere from 5x to 20x, depending on the CD! So whenever I need to rip a CD, I do it in my new account name and save the songs to my hard drive. Then I go back to my original account name, and transfer the ripped songs to my iTunes library, using the Add Library function in the menu bar. I know it's a pain, but until Apple fixes all the bugs in the new iTunes, I found this workaround to be very effective.

  • ITunes 7 - Loads Library, then won't open

    Hello,
I've had smooth running for a long while, but suddenly iTunes
    - LOADS library, but doesn't open a window with my music (the menu bar shows, but is unresponsive)
    - WON'T QUIT, even if I try FORCE QUIT.
I've restarted multiple times and repaired permissions - no luck.
Any ideas that won't trash my ratings and groups, etc.?
    Thanks.

What if I attach the firewire drive that my iTunes music is on to my Powerbook and open it in my Powerbook's iTunes? What library info does it use?
Whichever music library is on the drive, however, first you'll need to point iTunes to the drive via the iTunes preferences>advanced>general panel: see iTunes music folder location section.
    However, before you go there:
From your original post and response It sounds like there may be iTunes application corruption.
I would remove/download/reinstall iTunes. This would include removing the following:
    iTunes.app in your Applications folder
    iTunesX.pkg and iTunes.pkg in your /Library/Receipts folder
The 3 preference files I mentioned in my previous post
    iTunes folder in your /Library/Documentation/Applications
The reinstall ought to leave your iTunes music folder alone. However, just to be safe: make a copy (highlight/cmd. key + D) of your
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    iTunes Library
files in your /UserAccount/Music/iTunes folder and move these copies to your desktop.
Remember to "repair permissions" once the upgrade is complete.

  • Intermittent import library generation failure building 64-bit binary in Visual Studio 2013

I have a 64-bit c++ project that randomly fails to build because the import library generation silently fails in the link step.  I have scoured the "diagnostic level" log trying to find some hint at why the import library
fails to be created, but there doesn't seem to be any information.
It's pretty random.  When it fails, I can do a clean build and everything builds.  After a successful build, I can do another clean rebuild and see it fail again.
The 32-bit version consistently builds fine.  I see the 64-bit problem regularly in any configuration (Release or Debug).
        I'm running VS2013 Update 2 RC.
Any hints on how to debug this?  Is this a known issue for which there is a patch?

Hi Anna, thanks for the reply.  Yes, this does reproduce in MSBuild if you specify a rebuild.  As mentioned previously, if you do a clean and build, even through MSBuild, the build succeeds every time.
There's no way for me to create a sample project.  Our codebase is quite large and this doesn't reproduce for simple example projects.
There is no error message when the iTunes.lib import library fails to build.  The import library is used in a dependent project and that fails in a way you would probably expect (complains about a missing .lib)...
Here's the relevant section from my diagnostic build output.

  • Is there a way to overwrite the ORIGINAL songs with my iTunes library info?

    Hi there,
I would like to know if there is a way to overwrite the original songs with my iTunes library info? What I mean is, I have MANY songs that I have transferred to iTunes (and were obviously not purchased from iTunes) and I always put the info (such as the album name, the album art, artist, composer, etc.) and it leaves the original song (like the songs that are in "My music" section that is in "My Documents") with the same info. For example : The song that I put into the library will be "chamiionaire feastureing flip"... and in the iTunes, I put it as "Chamillionaire ft. Lil Flip". How do I make it so that it replaces the "original" info (located in my documents) with the info I put in?

Same question. Used to have an iPod. Lost it (best digital player ever), now I use other portable device. The mp3 files have their id3tag edited in the original file, but the .m4a don't!.
Want to know someway to write the info from the library to the original .m4a files.

  • How to get existing library imported to new itunes install, old library was  not backed up or exported

How to get existing library imported to new itunes install, old library was not backed up or exported.  This occured due to Win 7 user profile was corrupt.

I know that in Mac OS X one can pick which library to use by holding down the option key while starting iTunes. What's the Windows equivalent?
    Press the Shift key.
WIll the fact that the music is now on another physical drive make a difference
    No.
I know the previous install is at least 7.0, but I have no idea about which point release.
Try checking the content of the iTunes Music Library.xml file.
Finally, what's the expected behaviour (or required procedure) with respect to reauthorization of this computer to use the same ITMS-purchased files?
You will be asked to reauthorize the computer.

  • No Import Library option in iTunes 10

I just had iTunes throw the "locked library" error on me, and one solution I heard of was moving all db out of the iTunes folder and then re-importing 'iTunes Music Library.xml' into iTunes.
According to step 7 in the knowledge base article on Apple's support pages (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451) from last September, I was supposed to accomplish this simply by +7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.+
In my iTunes 10 this is not an option! I can backup, export, and organize, but not import. Wonder what the use of backup your db is when you cannot reimport it ... Any ideas on how to import the xml version of the db?

I really need to learn how to read and write some day.
I was focusing so hard on finding the option "Import Library", that I actually thought the KB article said just that in step 7. It was not until you said there was indeed such an option that I recognized the fact that it said playlist.
It did indeed work, but I still find it curious that they dumped the functionality concerning importing of +music libraries+ into the same option as the one concerning +importing of playlists+.
Anyhooow, thanks for pointing out the obvious. I actually needed it

  • HT3814 how do i get itunes to keep track info on cds i burn from my itunes library?

how do i get itunes to keep track info on cds i burn in itunes?

Audio CDs do not contain track information. For commercial CDs this information is supplied by the Gracenote service (see below).  Each computer gets this information for a particular CD from this service, it isn't on the CD.  You would have to register your CD with Gracenote.  In my opinion this is a bit much for a personal CD that only a few computers in the world will ever see, but I guess unless they block it then you can do it.

What are all those iTunes files? - http://www.macworld.com/article/139974/2009/04/itunes_files.html - "iTunes Library Extras.itdb contains some Gracenote CDDB information."

  • Re-import CD's into iTunes & not loose the info...

    it's official : i'm definitely an idiot !!
my problem is that i've imported circa 750 CD's into iTunes, some of which iTunes got hold of artist's names & album/song titles - but many it didn't & i had to type these...big effort since i'm awful at it !
started listening to music & not wanting to sound like a pretentious, hair splitting ''audiophile maniac'' type, fact is it's coming out at a lesser quality than my stereo has gotten me used to.
tried playing songs simultaneously in iTunes & my CD player - changing between both at the amp's line in selector.. - & it does sounds pretty bad....
searched forums for answers & .... ended up stumbling on this iTunes >preferences>import settings where iTunes allows the obvious !...
great , this means i can get it to full audio quality - space isn't really an issue since i bought a 1TB W.D My Book for my music & will buy more if necessary...but my trouble is this : how can i re-import ALL of my CD's without loosing the info i got/typed, artwork etc...?? what audio format/settings will be the very best possible ? aiff, wav ? any help will be greatly appreciated
forgive me the length of this msg but....i thank you all

  • "Import Library"  not found in iTunes 8?

Hello, I finally made the PC-to-Mac switch this week. I'd like to bring my iTunes library over from the PC (and maintain ratings, play counts, etc.), and I've found various instructions on how to do so. However, the instructions call for exporting the library into an XML file (Library.xml) on the PC, then transferring it to the Mac and Importing it into iTunes on the Mac.
I cannot find the "Import Library" menu option in iTunes 8. Am I missing it? Is it hidden in another menu? Why would they allow you to export the library if you couldn't import it again?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Unfortunately, that happens all too often when new features are added to iTunes. Keeping iTunes help current seems to be less-than-low priority. iTunes Help is also due for an overhaul. When the help for Office:mac is better designed and more thorough in providing details, examples, etc., than the help for software designed by Apple, something is not right in the universe.

  • Can I burn hd home movies to dvd in itunes after importing them into my itunes library

Can I burn to dvd, HD home movies from a HD camera in itunes after importing them in my itunes library

I don't have iTunes set to manage my music but if I move an item to the trash that is the file iTunes uses, it will still play in iTunes until I empty the trash.  Of course at that point it is permanently gone so if that was my keeper file then I have messed up.
One overlying recommendation is to back up your computer before doing the editing.  If you make a mistake you can always go back and try again.

i've been trying to import music from my computer library to itunes to free up space.
when i put a cd in my comp to add it to itunes it imports fine. but if i move a song from my computer's library to itunes and then delete the song from my computer's library it says it cant be played and would i like to search for it.
do i have to save my music to a disk 1st before i can completely delete it from my comp and then import it from the disk to itunes??
thats the only thing i can think of to make it work.
    some1 pleeeeease help me

    What happens when you try?
You should be able to drag-and-drop a music file that is already on your computer into iTunes. As you drag the file, you should see the "link" appear in iTunes and a blue box appear around the songs list, as shown below:
Notice the blue line above the title "London can take it". This blue box will appear regardless of which "view" you are using. Here's the same thing but for a folder with several songs in it:
For File/Add song to Library, use the shortcut CTRL+O or use the ALT key, followed by F key and then the A key (that's File/Add file to Library) and navigate to the file you want.
For File/Add Folder to Library, use the ALT key, followed by the F key and then the D key (File/Add folder to Library) and navigate top the folder you want. I cannot remember the shortcut for this option.

    Hi, BartleyBauer.
If the media that you are attempting to sync plays in iTunes, try removing the preference to sync music as this remove the media from the device.  Once this is done, try syncing the media again.

  • An ever-ubituous import library question ???

    So here's my dillemma:
My desktop computer is slooooooooo. My laptop is fast.
My large (over 100 gig) library is on my desktop computer -- well, really it's on an external hard drive, but the itunes I use is on the desktop.
If I import the library from the harddrive into my laptop computer, will I see EVERYTHING as if it's from the desktop (playlists, play count, ratings, etc)?? Thanks so much

Directly messing with the XML and ITL files is always a nightmare, isn't it?
    Here's my solution:
    First, download this: http://otto.homedns.org/itunes/SaveRatings.zip
Open iTunes on the library you want to save the information for. Then double click the SaveRatings.HTA to run it. Click the "Save Ratings" button.
What this does: It will read the iTunes Library, and save the ratings, playcount, and last played time for all the tracks that actually have that info. This information will be saved into a file called "ratings.xml".
Now, copy your music over to another computer and import it all into another iTunes library. Yeah, the playcount and such are gone. Bummer. So now you copy over the SaveRatings.hta and the ratings.xml file you made. Run the HTA again. This time, click "Restore Ratings". It'll put all the information back into iTunes.
Why this? Because it's not limited by such things as "location". It's matching on three things: Album, Artist, Song Title. If those match, it considers it a match, and sets the information accordingly.
If you use a little bit of thought, this will let you combine a couple of sets of music and restore the relevant info in iTunes, without worrying about drive letters or copying weird ITL files or any of that wacky stuff.
    A few caveats:
-This script is slow. It takes a long time to run through your iTunes library, and there's no progress indicator. Be patient, when it's done, the script screen will change.
-This script isn't perfect. A few tracks will not be found in the Restore process. There's always a few... So when it can't find a track, it'll spit that fact out onto the screen after the Restore finishes. Than you can find that track yourself and set your own rating and such.
    Enjoy.
