ITunes 7 is unusable

Maybe the title is an exaggeration, but the Command+1 shortcut no longer opens up the iTunes window. Is there any particular reason for this? I can't think of any conceivable reason as to why they remove this useful shortcut.
It's incredibly annoying to have to use my mouse to open the main window, and for a company that prides itself on intuitive, user-friendly interfaces this is absolutely ridiculous. The help files still indicate that Command+1 should open the window up, but the shortcut has been removed from the "Window" menu.
Is there any way to download previous versions of iTunes? I've been looking on the apple site and on google and I haven't found anything that doesn't link back to the iTunes 7 page.

I've already added the 'missing' shortcuts (still listed in the Keyboard Shortcuts!! in the iTunes Help menu) in System Preferences>Keyboard & Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts
There is no button or shortcut for the Equalizer window anymore, so I've assigned ⌘2 to this menu item.
Older version of iTunes (6.0.5 not yet on the list) can be downloaded here

  • Album view in iTunes 11 unusable because singles showing as "Unknown Album"

I have lots of "singles" in my collection (ie mp3s with nothing in the "album" field) as well as lots of albums.
Because of this, the "albums" view in iTunes 11 is virtually unusable, as 80% of the music shows as "Unknown Album" and prevents me from just browsing genuine albums.
Is there a ways to fix this so that the "albums" view only contains tracks that really are from albums?  Nothing I've tried (e.g. flagging them as "part of a compilation") seems to make a difference.
    thanks,

Thanks - I have already done sonething similar with a number of smart-playlists myself, but this is a poor workaround and means the pre-built views in iTunes are useless.  It's also something else to think about every time I import a new song so that it doesn't get lost.
Like lots of people, I've got loads of singles, mixes, radio shows and other music that is not groupable by album, and I find it ridiculous that iTunes hinders, rather than helps, to manage this..  Coupled with the appalling new search functionality this new version makes it harder than ever to navigate my music collection.

  • ITunes 10 unusable on Windows 7

I'm upgraded to iTunes 10 on my Windows 7 machine, and it has become unusable. Not only will no content load, but I cannot drag the app around, none of the menu options work. In the task manager it says that the application isn't responding. Currently its stuck on the iTunes Store screen for the last half hour.
    Thanks,
    -JS

At least you can take comfort that iTunes10 is a dog on OS X too.
Usable but frustrating and ridiculously slow and resource hungry.
It's not Apple failing to port well to Windows, there is something deeply wrong with the performance of this version of iTunes. There was a version of iTunes8 that limped and stuttered like 10 and that was fixed in a point release so here's hoping a fix is on the way.
Sad because performance was noticeably better than 9 for me for the first days but has declined into an awful experience. I can see how whatever is going wrong for so many of us got through testing and QA but if my experience and the comments on the thread are a guide there is something needing an urgent fix going on and Apple needs to address that.

  • ITunes almost unusable

Recently iTunes has become unusable. After launching the app I lose control of the mouse (pointer) for periods of time. Every now and then I can move the mouse, sometimes across the screen, sometimes barely and inch. If I try hard enough (use patience not to get mad and close the app) I am able to click on things, menus/songs/etc.
I am only trying to play music, not upload/download/sync, etc. Everything returns to normal the moment I close the app., normally by command 'Q' because trying to maneuver the mouse to just the right spot could take forever.
I am using the most current version of iTunes, as far as I know.

The instructions for completely removing all traces of iTunes on a Mac are pretty much the same for all versions. It should be close enough, if you were able to drag the app and plist files to the trash and then reinstall.
Did you install any input plug-ins or on your Mac, like something to share keyboards or get more tap to click features?
Try testing in a new user account, so we know if its a system wide issue or a user specific issue.
The system wide issues can be resolved by updating, reinstalling, pulling startup items and files in the /Library folder.
The user specific issues can be resolved by reconfiguring, pulling plists in the ~/Library, and removing login items.
You could also open Console and look for any logs that are generated when the issue occurs.
    WTH.

  • ITunes completely unusable

I've just recently purchase an 80GB iPod to replace my 30GB. It, and iTunes are totally incompatible. iTunes goes through this Determining Gapless Playback Information routine that locks up iTunes and then slowly everything else goes bad, making me do a cold boot. I've noticed many others have this same problem and several seem to have a solution, but they don't seem to work. The only thing that worked was to turn off iTunes. I'm looking for a working replacement, but it seems none of the others can recognize the iPod. Songbird looks like it could be a nice alturnative once it gets out of beta. Anyway, I guess Apple doesn't read any of the complaints about their "not ready for primetime" gapless feature, or they'd provide a way to turn it off. I'm going to try the 6.0.5 version of iTunes to see if it will work.

    higginsoft:
Some corrupt music files can cause iTunes to get hung up during the gapless scan. I posted some steps here that can help you identify that bad file(s). They are long and a bit convoluted, but they work. If you can identify the bad file(s), I would appreciate it very much if you could send it/them to me.

  • ITunes Error 502, 504, 5004, iTunes Store Unusable, Apple Refuses to Respon

I've tried over, and over to contact somebody at Apple the last 4 days, press contacts, executive people, technical support, and nobody will respond about iTunes being slow. It's the reason iTunes search times out.
Apple stop using a JSP or webobjects server. Way to sloooow. As these forums powered by the same technology have been in the last few days.
Fix iTunes now!!! We pay for this service and you're losing money and customers.
Anyone who types in search and doesn't get results, test this out type "fix itunes" in the search box on the itunes store, these results will get passed on to Apple maybe? But the search always times out for the last 4 days.
    Arrrrrrggg.

It seems so far to only be affecting people on the west coast. Apple if you give a **** I'm literally 2 miles from your headquarters, it's everywhere in the valley, not comcast, or any one provider, it's dozens of them, and it's affecting my friends in Colorado.

  • Any idea on how to deauthorize iTunes from unusable PCs?

I have 3 computers that have crashed or been rendered useless by fail cops (in my friend's case) so I can't deauthorize them manually. Can I do it from one of the other 2?

You have to wait until you have a total of 5 authorized. Then you can use the deauthorize all.
Don't worry about it until you hit 5. My work nicely gave me a new PC while I was on vacation a few years ago...I lost an auth that way, but haven't needed it.

  • How do I install Version 11.1.4 of iTunes successfully?

I received an update to iTunes which I tried to install on my Windows 7 desktop, as I always have, but found that there was a file MSVCR80.dll missing - it couldn't open the service. I followed the advice from Apple of clearing a Temp folder, uninstalling the old version (and after serveral goes, the incomplete new version), rebooting. All to no avail - the message came up that this file was missing, or the service could not be started when I logged on.
So what do I do now - iTunes is unusable which is most annoying?? iTunes on my iPhone and iPad is still operational.

What exactly is the problem you are having?
    Do you miss the Sidebar?
You can turn it back on here:
View (in the Menu bar) > Show Sidebar or Command+Option+S
If you have iOS 7 devices you will need iTunes 11 or later to sync.

  • ITunes 9 crashes when connecting to store

iTunes 9 is not functioning at all. The problem seems to be linked to something called webkit.dll?? Safari 4 has the same problem. At this point, iTunes is unusable.

  • ITunes locking up iMac

So, I've been fighting with my iMac for about a month now. Issue is that iTunes and/or the Finder locks up. Applications that I already have open seem to continue to function but if I leave my iMac on and come back to it, iTunes either won't open (icon just bounces in the Dock and it never opens) or it is unresponsive and I have to force quit it. At this point I also cannot restart or shutdown my mac, when I choose either option from the Apple menu, the Dock hides and my desktop clears as the os is preparing the mac for the shutdown/restart but then it hangs with the spinning pinwheel and I have no choice but to do a hard boot with the power button.
I do use EyeTV to watch/record TV on my mac. I do export some recording into iTunes - I rarely get even 1 show to export successfully before iTunes is hung and I have to do a hard reboot and try again.
I have not installed any new software recently. Steps I have taken to try to fix the issue (not in any particular order):
    1) Unplugged power cord to reset SMC
    2) Reset NVRAM/PRAM
    3) Repaired Permissions using Disk Utility
    4) Verified with Disk Utility both the internal MacHD and external 2TB hard drive  (USB 2.0/3.0) - both check out as OK.
    4) Zero-formatted MacHD, reinstalled snow leopard (retail), downloaded 10.6.8 combo update, installed that, rebooted, repaired permissions, rebooted. Re-installed applications (including iTunes) (did NOT restore them or any Library files from backups).
    5) I've also tried "removing" iTunes and reinstalling (but I'm not sure how successful I was at finding and removing all iTunes components).
I just don't understand what could be causing this "hanging" behavior with iTunes. The mac and other applications seem to run fine until iTunes hangs. Then I have to do the hard boot with power button.

I'm having a very similar problem, which started relatively recently (within the last several weeks).  When I start iTunes, the whole system and any running applications slow to a crawl.  Although not locked up altogether, the system takes 30 seconds to a couple of minutes to respond to any mouse click or key stroke, and any display updates are stalled until the very short open window for other processes opens up (briefly!) again.  With patience, I can switch the input focus to iTunes and Cmd-Q to close it, after which everything returns to normal.

  • ITunes 10.4.1 freezing

    Hi there,
I have a problem with the latest version of iTunes on an iMac (2.7Ghz Intel Core i5, 4Gb RAM), running Lion 10.7.1.
Put simply, every time iTunes is opened, it very quickly locks up the whole computer for increasing periods of time. Every now and then it frees up for a fraction of a second before locking again, making iTunes basically unusable. As soon as I manage to quit iTunes, the computer returns to normal functioning speed. No other applications are running at the same time.
The problem initially began when I started up the iMac first time from the box (about two weeks old now). At the time the computer was running 10.6.8 (or 9?) - same problem. Upgraded in hope that issue would go away, but same freezes in 10.7 and 10.7.1.
I am not purchasing/downloading/playing/syncing anything in iTunes to trigger the problem - simply happens as soon as iTunes opens.
There are two accounts on the iMac, imported using Apple's migration assistant from my old MacBook. iTunes behaves the same way in both accounts, which have fairly large music libraries associated with them. I have since created a third account with an empty, untouched iTunes music library - same problem encountered as soon as iTunes opens.
    Any help appreciated.
    mark

    Mark,
Don't know if we have the same problem.  I upgraded to 10.4.1.10 (newest as of today, Oct 4, 2011) and when I open itunes, my sync starts and it freezes every times.  I stumbled upon a possible fix.  I changed the setting to manual sync, so iTunes doesn't check for new podcasts, etc. I now have to do it manually, but I haven't had a freeze for the last 2 hours as I sunced my iTunes.  Most of my sync involves podcasts.
Hope that helps until the next upgrade (iTunes 5?!).  It's very frustrating.

  • IPod Classic "Verifying" Makes Itunes freeze

Well since the itunes 9 update or whatever whenever i plug in the USB cord to my ipod (not just mine I've tried all my friends) my itunes freezes up; but when i unplug the USB coord from the ipod itunes stops freezing and runs normally. So i cant even add songs.
    any solutions?

I am having a similar issue, for about a week or so (first major ipod issue in almost 2 years). When I plug in my ipod classic, iTunes freezes/ gives me the spinning beach ball. This lasts for about an hour, during which time itunes is unusable. After an hour or so, the ipod is recognized by itunes and syncs properly.
I have re-installed itunes, used older versions, created a new library, and restored my ipod.
My iPod works fine on other machines, and other ipods seem to work on my computer as well. The issue seems to be unique to my ipod/computer account combo.
Apple Genius Bar was able only to confirm that my iPod seemed to be functioning normally, and perhaps I had a corrupt library (I don't, as the problem persists with a new library).
If anyone has any advice on what could be the issue (a corrupt user/system file hidden somewhere?) it would be greatly appreciated. THanks

  • Does the iTunes store have any view options in iTunes 9?

I was forced to 'up'grade to iTunes 9 when I bought a new iPod. Now I find the iTunes store unusable. How do I display the composer? How do I widen columns so that I can see all the performers - singers, conductor, orchestra, etc?
    All help gratefully received.

Thanks to Jesse M for the "See all >>" suggestion, which is better than nothing, and to iNexxFear for all your hard work, but I absolutely need the search results to come up with full functionality. The possibility of searching painstakingly by separate categories for Composer, Album etc. merely puts me at the mercy of the overworked, undereducated interns who have to type in such information, unaided of course by iTunes' hopelessness at categorising anything other than pop songs.
However, I've found a fantastic solution of my own. It's called Amazon. Only 69p a track. Searching isn't perfect, but it's far better than this appalling leap backwards by Apple.
Yes, I'm upset. But I see the thin end of a wedge that's turning Apple into Microsoft.

  • The folder "iTunes" can not be found...

Recently, I had two strange things happen to my Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop.
    1. My photos just disappeared.
    2. My iTunes became unusable.
    - I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes 3 times. Every time it says the install was complete. BUT when I try to open iTunes, it gives me the following message and does nothing. "The folder "iTunes" can not be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder."
    - I even went so far as to create a My Music, which mysteriously disappeared. While downloading iTunes, I selected for the download to be saved in the new folder. When I open the folder, EVERYTHING iTunes is there, even the iTunes icon. But no matter what "The folder "iTunes" can not be found or created..."
    Please help!

    Owemy,
This sounds very much like a registry problem I have located the following link to guide you to a hopeful resolution.

  • Disabling Bonjour causes MAJOR issues with Itunes

In case anyone doesn't know, Itunes now ships with a service called Bonjour, which shares your files without asking you, online and via bluetooth.
Disabling this service makes Itunes completely unusable, therefore we are being FORCED to share our personal files without consent... how can this be legal?
Anyone know where/how/which version of itunes was the last without Bonjour?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Wow I really didn't expect this post to be heard let alone be responded to in such detail!  Thanks so much for listening to my frustrations..
Most of all I feel iTunes Match falls just short of what in needs to be because its missing a few minor features. With a minor update to how it works these issues could be completely resolved.
The cloud, in my opion, could act as more of a background operation.   If it was just a way to access music not already synced manually, it would allow for users to still control what music gets synced and the rest goes to the cloud.. in the background.  Instead of removing the features that allow users to check with playlist, songs, albums and artists they want to sync, instead keep this option.  The cloud would hold the complete library.
This minor difference would make it something that would not remove any existing functionality while still enjoying all the benefits of the cloud.
Until I get to have control of the sync manually and use the cloud I will have to cancel my itunes match because its causing more problems than it solves.
FYI  all of my apple cloud services are currently off because of similar issues.  There needs to be a ballance between simplicity and user control.
Steve's war with Google doesn't allow me to merge my contacts with theirs becasue you are specifically limiting it to happen. Google has to exploit loopholes to make everything sync by going around Apple's roadblocks.   Its a real bummer.

  • ITunes (latest version) crashes...iPod won't eject

When I connect my iPod Classic 160GB, iTunes launches but crashes immediately. I force-quit it because it won't run anyway, but then Finder won't let me eject my iPod (the iPod icon is grayed out on my desktop). In short, iTunes is unusable. Another thread cited an issue with iBooks and recommended uninstalling it by "changing the rights" (I have no idea what that means) and deleting it to fix the iTunes problem. OSX won't let me delete iBooks because "it is required by OSX). Any help would be appreciated.

Ahh, it seems that resetting the ipod fixed the problem. Carry on.
