ITunes 7 out of RAM

Hi,
yesterday I added to all my albums in my iTunes 7 playlist it´s covers to see the wonderful new cover-view and it worked great.
Today morning I also wanted to start iTunes 7 but there comes the error message: "The application iTunes can´t be open. There´s not enough RAM."
But I have a Macbook with 2 GB RAM! I repaired the volume rights and restarted some times but the error still exists. Should I reinstall iTunes7? How does it work? Will I lose all my music and/or preferences?
I could cry, I WANT to hear music so please help me guys.
Thx
Sebastian

Hi,
On other threads, people have suggested changing the monitor resolution in System Preferences to a lower resolution, then restarting iTunes. Once iTunes is open, you can then reduce the size of the coverflow window by grabbing the resize bar between the covers and the tracklist and moving it upwards. This worked for me - it consistently opens okay now.
You should have more than enough RAM, depending on what other applications you have running at the time. If you haven't already, you could try repairing permissions with Disk Utility and restarting your Mac.

  • ITunes nearing 1GB of RAM consumption! Any ideas to lessen the load?

    Hello -
My name is Erick and I'm an ACMT/Network Engineer. Apple-certified, but not Apple-employed.
I have encountered an issue in iTunes which was not resolved with the latest 10.6.3 update and was hoping for any community suggestions or advice.
First, context may be important: I use iTunes primarily as a Home Sharing home-base to stream my TV Shows and Movies to Apple TVs in my home. As a result, it (as well as the iMac) are on 24/7 with the exception of a daily scheduled task which quits and reopens iTunes to sync unwatched media to my iOS devices at 4:30AM.
I have noticed several things with iTunes 10.6 which I have documented in other questions here on the forums (long periods of unresponsiveness, the inability to scrub videos), but this issue may be just as significant and could be a root cause in my other problems. This particular question deals with RAM consumption. I have noticed for years that iTunes is a memory hog, so you won't find me shocked there, but what has shocked me is how the amount of RAM iTunes consumes has risen with the amount of RAM I've installed. I currently use an iMac (mid-2010) with a quad i7 and 16GB of RAM.
I have noticed lately that upon opening iTunes 10.6.1 (and 10.6 before it) that iTunes immediately captures about 250MB of RAM. While I have plenty to spare in comparison, I've noticed that the amount of RAM it consumes swells considerably throughout the day. For example, my iTunes is completely idle right now - no devices are connected, no media is streaming or caching, no store purchases are downloading, and iTunes Match/Genius is not actively scanning anything - but my iTunes shows 605MB of RAM. When playing an m4v file converted from mp4 (so we're talking maybe a 200MB media file - not an MKV convert or anything in 1080p), I've noticed iTunes balloon to 900+MB of RAM. If I quit the application and open it again, it immediately snatches up that 250MB or so of RAM, then balloons within minutes.
So while I expect iTunes to consume RAM, as it is a very resource-heavy and busy media center hub, I am surprised by the amount of RAM being consumed here and was wondering if anyone might be able to clarify whether I should consider this a "problem" or just iTunes being iTunes; and if it isn't a problem, are there still any suggestions toward how I could minimize RAM consumption? I realize that I have RAM to spare, but when I get into video conversions, music playback, and work on this computer (all the while my wife is streaming a video across the house on an Apple TV), I do want to make sure I'm not wasting memory on an application that might be ballooning unnecessarily (it is, after all, 6X the consumption of the next app in line).
Just for those who might be wondering what I've already tried, I've worked on several quick fix ideas to help remedy the situation (and hoped they would fix the other issues I've experienced with iTunes 10.6): I've rebuilt the library by opening a new library and importing from my previous iTunes LIbrary file; I've created a new library, dragged any media to it, and tried to play it; I've run iTunes in 32-bit mode. None of these has resolved the issue. I have also attempted to run these files from a new user account (with a new library or with the existing library), and have tried them from an external troubleshooting drive which is also running Lion 10.7.3 and iTunes 10.6.1.
Any ideas, suggestions, or recommendations anyone could provide to aid with this problem? While it's not crippling, it does cause some headaches as other applications begin fighting for memory. I also wonder if the amount of RAM it's consuming might be the source of some other playback and unresponsiveness issues I've experienced.
Thanks for any suggestions; I really appreciate your time.

I have resolved my issue with iTunes' RAM consumption and wanted to post the solution for anyone who might be experiencing similar symptoms. It was really quite simple to fix, I just didn't see it for what it was:
iTunes Match was causing iTunes to utilize significant amounts of RAM to queue, refresh, or sync my iTunes Match database.
iTunes Match - which also forces Genius Mode to be on (something that used to cause my iTunes 10.5 to freeze and balloon in RAM usage before I turned it off) - would regularly attempt to refresh my database of 21,000 matched songs (none of which were stored on the computer - just in the cloud) and when it would attempt to update or refresh that library, the program would stop responding. The RAM ballooning I saw when the application launched would start to climb during that unresponsive period, when iTunes was attempting to pack more and more power into the Match check to get it to power through.
So, the simple solution was this: Turn iTunes Match off and iTunes quits freezing, and its RAM usage after 24 hours of uptime is about 130MB.
Now, that of course completely eliminates the usefulness of iTunes Match since the music is no longer accessible on this machine in this iTunes Library. So how to restore its usefulness without recreating the problem? Slightly more aggravating, but still working right: I created a separate, fresh new library and named it iTunes Match. When I need music, I hold option when selecting the iTunes app and select my Match Library, which has NOTHING else in it but iTunes Match. When I'm done with the music, I switch back to my 24/7 media streaming library that has my 2TB of TV Shows & Movies (and device sync relationships) in it.
It doesn't seem like iTunes Match causes freezing and RAM ballooning all by itself, it just seems like in a library that's also full of other stuff, it's the final straw that kills the performance. Split the libraries up and things seem to work really well in both.
Not a perfect solution, but until the next release of iTunes, this may be the best bet. I hope this helps someone else out there, but it at least cleared up my issue. Thanks for reading.

  • Whay the itunes take too much ram

the itunes take too much ram in 16 gig pit  windows

Well recalling an old post, is just stating the fact that the program is still doing the same thing. And i do concurr that itunes is one of my bigger ram hogs but i have no problem with 16gigs of ram installed. As coder myself, i know it is possible for them to rework itunes to dump cache periodically so that it doesnt hog as much ram as it does.
Itunes is falling behind times as Solid State Drives are becoming more prevelant in computers, they shouldn't need to cache as much as it does currently and hogging system resources. But then again on the other hand, they are  probably thinking that it is not a problem anymore since the standard for most computers/laptop is upwards of 4gigs+. Still is poor coding on apple's behalf that wont be recognized this late in the game.
    In reply to Zak,
As of right now apple is on downward slope according to stock market quotes. But they have a few products that are coming out here soon that will bounce them back easily. After that, I am not sure.
    In reply to Richb1910,
Comparing Apple to Mircosoft now a days is like comparing apple to oranges. Their companies have taken different paths, yes one may be better then the other in their choice of paths. But as it stands microsoft is still the leading home user operating system and server operating system for many major companies. Apple excels with their product lines which make them a very successful company. To say on or the other is barely staying above water is by far the wildest thing i have ever heard.

  • Running out of RAM; skipping

I'm using AEcs3 and doing a roto. As I work, it "seems" like it's running out of RAM. At first I thought it was coz iTunes was open; closed it. Then it would happen again, I thought it was my Wacom tablet; unplug & plug, made sure it was updated to latest driver. It would still happen, so I reboot, flash the PRAM and have no programs opening and only using the mouse. When iTunes was on, the music would skip, like a CD. With nothing running except AE, then the mouse stops working and turns black, no beach ball, then I have control again. I even shutoff nucleo Pro. I don't know if this is an AE issue or an OS issue. This is the first time I've seen this. Any ideas?

Well, it needs to render the paint strokes and depending on their number, this can indeed cause massive RAM consumption, as they are vector-based. Therefore you may wanna pre-render the sections you already have and start with a "clean slate" on the rest of them. It will take some more effort to manage the various versions, but should make working easier. Also do not forget to purge the Undo list and RAM previews regularly, this may also help.

  • AM I running out of RAM?

I am  running a late 2013 iMac with 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7. I have 16 GBs of Ram but it still seems lacking sometimes.
And by that I mean I may go to add an attachment to an e-mail and it hangs for a few seconds. And the same tends to happen when saving almost any form of doc including text docs. It's nothing dramatic just a tad frustrating.
I do have a tendency to leave multiple apps open including processor hoggers like Screenflow and Fuze meeting. I will also probably have Spotify, Chrome and Firefox, Skype, Mac Mail, Echofon for Twitter, iTunes, Pages, Word and Excel, Calendar and Preview open at the same time.
I know this is a lot but for the most part I need them. Am I simply running out of Ram when it slows and would 32 GB make a big difference?
    Thanks

That's normal.  With Mavericks it wants to use as much of the memory as possible.  It's the memory pressure and amount of swap files that you need to look at:
As long as the memory pressure is constant and there's no Swap used you shouldn't worry. The OS will free up what's needed for any new app that is launched.  More about compressed memory and memory management with Mavericks can be found here: https://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/

  • Maxing out on RAM

    Hey
My old powerbook came with 128, I added 512 to start then exchanged that with a 1gig so it was running on 1.128. No problem at all. Spec said max was 640.
I now have the macbook pro 2.16 C2D 15.4 screen. It came with a removable gig ram and I had a gig from my previous MBP. However - I feel 2gig is not enough. This MBP says it can only do 3gig ram. Recent models can do 4. I'm wondering if anyone has maxed out the ram on a 3gig version and run it on 4.
I'm thinking of pullng out both 1gigs and sticking 2x2gig in it. Just want to make sure it is possible.
    Appreciate any help.

    Hi,
one benefit of 2x2GB is that you still have the 'pairing' advantage of some small percentage more speed when the memory is accessed.
And secondly, if you decide to get a Santa Rosa MBP in the future you can use this memory for it.
Other than that, you are right, not much use.
    Have Fun

  • So, I have had the Ipod 4th generation for about a year now, and I have never had any trouble adding music onto my ipod until this latest version of itunes came out. Now, I cannot add any more music onto my ipod! I Have grayed out songs that I can't play

So, I have had an Ipod touch (fourth generation) for a little less than a year now, and I have never had any problems with it until the latest version of itunes came out. Now, my ipod never can sync (I left it up for an hour before and it only got to step 2 out of 7), and I can't add any more music to my ipod! To make it worse, about 100 songs that I had deleted off my ipod, but could still be found in my itunes library, appeared again on my ipod! But, they are grayed out and I can't listen to them so they just take up space.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

It would be necessary that you have to use "Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool". (see Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6 )
The order varies depending on your individual needs:
    1. Maybe you have to activate/deactivate, so please have a look there:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html
    2. Sometimes, we know in the meantime, the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
    3. Did you already try "uninstalling and re-installing"? Be careful with (de)installing aso. by (de)installing by your own resources. As much as I regret it and as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html   and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
    4. If necessary and for further questions click through http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html or http://helpx.adobe.com/de/contact.html and if "open" please use chat, I had the best experiences.  The chat button is activated as soon as there is an agent available to help.

Are you running Leopard on your Mac, Laurie?
If so, try instead updating to iTunes 10.6.3.25. (That supports earlier models of iPhones running iOS 6, even though it can't run the new iPhone 5s.)
A .dmg installer for iTunes version 10.6.3.25 for Mac OS can be found at the following download page on the Apple website:
