ITunes 7:  Single Library, Multiple Users

iTunes 7; Can I have a sinlge library that is accessed by multiple instances of iTunes? For example, if I have a network attached storage device or file server where all of the media files are stored, can I have multiple instances of iTunes on multiple PCs point to those files stored on the NAS as the music storage location?
Thanks!

You need to clarify what you are asking for:
<<all music stored in a single library "owned" by the admin account>>
That's easy.
<<all music that is added is added to that same folder>>
What folder? So far all you've talked about is a Library. The iTunes Music Folder is not the same as the Library file.
<<that folder is the library for all other accounts>>
Again, What folder?
You can set up a common Music Folder using either an external disk or the Shared Folder, but live updating Libraries is another matter. Putting music into a folder will not cause it to be added to iTunes, it has to be imported. Even if you could set up folder actions that might import music to a Library when it's added to the Shared Folder, what happens if the accounts are not logged in? What happens to the accounts that are not in front?
What I worked out for my sister and her family was as follow:
We created an account called Music, everyone has the password to this accoount. All Ripping, Burning and Syncing is done via this account. It is not an Admin account.
Music Sharing is turned on in this account. All the other accounts are set to look for shared Music. That way, anyone logged in can play music while they work.
It's the closest I've got.

Is it possible to have one iTunes library (say the Administer's iTunes library) and share it with multiple users on the same computer?

  • Single library multiple accounts

hi there, so i've read the article on the support site on using a single library for multiple user accounts... I don't like either of the proposed solutions.
here's what i looking to have happen:
all music stored in a single library "owned" by the admin account
all music that is added is added to that same folder
that folder is the library for all other accounts
    is this possible?
the fast user swiching is just LAME, and putting the iTunes music folder in the public folder doesn't allow live updating of other account libraries.
(even if i have to use some third party app to cause this to happen that's okay...unless it's a really iky app.)
    thanks a billion

  • Windows 7, one computer, one library, multiple users

I installed iTunes 10.0.1 (64 bit) on a new computer running Windows 7.
    1. I copied my old iTunes library from an old computer.
    2. In iTunes, I changed my iTunes media folder location to C:\users\public\music\itunes\itunes media
    3. I selected th copied files, then dragged and dropped them into the itunes window.
All good so far. Now I can see and play my old tunes on my new computer. But... this is a home computer with multiple users. When I change users, I can start itunes, but when I change the iTunes media folder location to the same location as the install user's location, I get nothing. It's like iTunes can't see the data at that location.
Can anyone help with this? Is there a different way to do this? My goal is to have all users on this computer share one iTunes library (we all use the same store account). What am I missing?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

+... but when I change the iTunes media folder location to the same location as the install user's location, I get nothing. It's like iTunes can't see the data at that location.+
When you change user B's itunes preference to use C:\users\public\music\itunes\itunes media as their itunes media folder, that part worked, right?
You need to add the "C:\users\public\music\itunes\itunes media" folder to their itunes database file (itunes Library.itl). Each windows user has their own database file.
The itunes library content is not the same as the itunes library database.
Make sure everyone's preferences for "Copy files to itunes folder" is NOT checked, or you'll end up with duplicate files.

  • One iTunes media folder for multiple users

    Hi there,
I'm having trouble getting iTunes 9.0.3 to let me share one media folder across two users. I want to be able to share and update the contents of the media folder from either user account. I had this going before I updated thanks to another discussions post and a little program called BatCHmod, but now it doesn't seem to be working. Not only that, iTunes can't find some of my apps. Help?
It would also be great to be able to do the same with iPhoto.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions !
There's no easy answer for this one. Even the best options still require ongoing maintenance to keep things aligned.
The Consolidate command, unlike your expectations, only examines the current files known to iTunes and copies/reorganizes them into the "Music Location" setting. It does reattach files that were already moved to another location.
Generally speaking, the best option is to work from the computer with the largest/most complete set of music, consolidate it to the new drive, and then use a manual method or recreate the library on other computers using the network location. The "manual" method involves manually editing the "iTunes Music Library.XML" file on the computer to replace the old file location string with the new network location. As long as iTunes was maintaining files in its preferred location (drive:\...\iTunes Music\artist\album\song) this method can magically make the other iTunes' look to the new location for the file.
As for the "missing file" entries, here's a slightly automated cleanup routine.
    * select all the files in the iTunes library list
    * Get Info
    * set BPM to 99 (presumes you don't rely on the BPM field for real data), missing files won't be updated (of course)
    * after that completes add BPM to the Library view (ctrl-j or "view options") and sort the library by BPM
    * all the missing files are now grouped together so you can easily delete their entries.
As for after all computers are using the network drive...
When a user adds music to their library, other users will not see that new entry. You have to manually drag those new files into the iTunes library on the other computers.

  • GRC EAM - Single Firefighter Multiple User Login

    Hi Folks,
Good Day...Please need your valuable suggestion on the below issue...
We have configured GRC EAM 10.0 with a mapping of Single User Id to Single Firefighter but now we have got a scenario where Multiple Users require single Firefighter ID .
Mapping is done for Multiple users with single Firefighter ID., we have logged in with first user and successfully working but same time when the other user logged in, it is not allowing to enter into same firefighter (Popping a message as User1 is already using Firefighter)
Please provide me if any solution...

    Hi Hima
Good to hear (sorry for your first question and this one led me down that path)
I assume the program to login to SAP (can't remember name off the top of my head) performs a check to see if FF is configured and the User is a FF Id. This program is locked down so you cannot view the code (if it's not the program then the kernel is performing a check but pretty sure it's the program).
So in short, as soon as you configure the user to become a FF Id then it cannot be logged into via logon pad.
As an additional security measure you should be able to deactivate the FF Id password as it is not required by GRC. This will add additional certainty that no user can access it (you will have change documents to show this should the account ever be removed as a FF Id).

  • How can I avoid an iPad appears in iTunes when I have multiple users in lion?

    Hi,
I have 2 users accounts in Lion, and in both I have iTunes always open. Also have 2 iPads. Both have the sync by wifi enable.
One of the iPads, once was synchronized with the iTunes of one of the users accounts cable, and now want that only tries to sync with the itunes of the oyher user account, because it always try to sync with the first one, and not apearing in the other till I eject and change to the other account.
    Thank you
    Best regards

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You would only need homesharing on your iPad if you want to use the remote app (which is quite handy actually). To be able to use the iPad with the Apple TV, you use AirPlay, but the iPad won't show up in a list on the Apple TV, you send content from the iPad itself.
Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2 (or better), iPad Mini, iPhone 4S (or better), double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.

  • One iTunes Library, multiple user accounts?

    Hi,
I recently purchased a new iMac 21.5" for my Family and want to share my iTunes library with my wife's OS X user account so we can both access the same music/media on both accounts. Is there an easy way to do this? Maybe place the files in a "shared" folder?
Also, What's the best way to move my iTunes media to my new Mac from my old PC?
    Thanks,
    C

The Apple store will move everything from the pc to the mac or you can call Apple Support and they will help you do it.
If you type "share itunes library" into the search bar at the top of this page next to "Support" and find articles to show you how to do this.

  • How do I share new purchased itunes content automatically between multiple user accounts on the same computer?

I have 3 different user accounts set up on the same computer. Whenever one of us buys or downloads anything, how can I get that to be automatically available for each of the other users? The main itunes library is stored at users/shared/itunes, but this doesn't seem to help much. As far as I can gather, Home Sharing only works between computers, not between users on the same computer......

    camillafromchichester wrote:

is that the iTunes folder or just the iTunes media (or music) folder ?
what should work is if the entire iTunes folder were in the shared folder and iTunes on each user account would access the same library file
launch iTunes on each user account (one at a time) while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder you copied to the shared folder.
if user A adds content, this will be available to the others immediately when they access the library, however, only one iTunes at a time can use the library. if you're using fast user switching, user A must quit iTunes before user B can fire it up.

  • One library, multiple users

I am relatively new to mac. I have a laptop, a library of close to 300GB of music/podcasts/movies/TV shows, a macmini connected to a TV/Monitor and a 1TB NAS by la cie connected to an Airport Express router. I would like my NAS to store my iTunes content and to have both the MACMINI and MACBOOK access the library wirelessly... first question is: Is this possible. Second question is, should the NAS be set up with the Apple Server or the windows server. Right now for some reason I cannot access the share I created on the NAS if i only enable the Apple Server. Next question, after upgrading to iTunes 7, I noticed that when I download new music, a folder with the name of the album is created, the new music download is not stored in the artist folder, or the existing album folder that is stored in the Artist folder, is this correct. And lastly, when I moved all of the music to the new NAS Share, and then deleted the library on iTunes and reset the iTunes storage preferences and dragged/dropped the library from the new location, a bunch of songs now appear with an exclamation point. I am not sure if my system is working, and now I have to go and individually indicate to iTunes where songs are located, and I am afraid I lost music in the migration. How do I best use my network and music? How was iTunes intended to be used in a house with multiple computers and one account... HELP I am in over my head!

  • How does one know if Adobe Acrobat is single or multiple users?

How can I find out out if my version is multiple or single user?   I have my serial number, have downloaded and use regularly acrobat but have a colleague in my office who needs now also.  Can he just download like I did from the original order?  Thanks in advance.

McKinnonnnyc you can determine if you have an individual license by viewing your serial number under your account at http://www.adobe.com/.  You can find more information at Find your serial number quickly - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.
If you have a volume license serial number, and hence a serial number which can be used by multiple individuals, then the serial number and order would be available at https://licensing.adobe.com/.

  • Multiple user profiles on Mac-can all access the same itunes/iphoto data?

    Hi all,
    Just quick question.
Is it possible to set up one mac with multiple users that have their own profiles ( own mail accounts etc) BUT all share the same i photo / itunes / i cal data files etc ? I want to combine the various libraries from a couple of our Mac's and merge them onto one new Imac that I am now sharing with my partner.
We both have iphones and so want to be able to both access our shared photos / music diary etc - but still choose different set ups etc for each of our iphones through seperate itunes through the different profiles?
    Does this make sense?
Can any one shed any light on this for me?
    Cheers
    Paul

You almost might want to post this on the specific and various application forums to get information on how to do each program. Unfortunately OSX makes it incredibly difficult to bulk share files. It has a shared folder for common use, but from my experience unless you hand-edit permissions for each file you can only copy files from that area, not edit them.

I have a new late 2013 27" iMac with individual user accounts set up for each member of the family.  What do I need to do to enable sharing of a common iTunes library accross all the accounts on this machine?  I'd like for everyone to be able to add, delete, purchase, organize, create playlists, etc. in a single common iTunes library.  Thanks in advance for any help with this question.

I hope you all trust each other...
Again note, with this method you can only have one person using iTunes at any one time.

  • Sharing an iTunes Library across multiple user account and a network.

Sharing an iTunes Music Library across multiple user accounts.
    Hello Everybody!
Firstly, this was designed to be run in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. It will not work with earlier versions of Mac OS X! Sorry.
Here's a handy tip for keeping your hard drive neat and tidy, it also saves space, what in effect will be done is an iTunes music library will be shared amongst multiple users on the same machine. There are advantages and disadvantages to using this method.
    • Firstly I think it might be worthwhile to state the advantages and disadvantages to using this approach.
    The advantages include:
    - Space will be saved, as no duplicate files will occur.
    - The administrator will be able to have complete control over the content of the iTunes library, this may be useful for restricting the content of the Library; particularly for example if computer is being used at and education institution, business or any other sort of institution where things such as explicit content would be less favorable.
    - The machine will not be slowed by the fact that every user has lots of files.
The disadvantages to this system include.
    - The fact that the account storing the music will have to be logged in, and iTunes will have to be active in that account.
    - If the account housing the music is not active then nobody can use the iTunes library.
    - There is a certain degree of risk present when an administrator account must be continually active.
    - Fast User Switching must be enabled.
    Overview:
A central account controls all music on the machine/network, this is achieved by storing iTunes files in a public location as opposed to in the user's directory. In effect the system will give all users across the machine/network access to the same music/files without the possibility of files 'doubling up' because two different users like the same types of music. This approach saves valuable disk space in this regard and may therefore prove to be useful in some situations.
This is a hearty process to undertake, so only follow this tutorial if you're willing to go all the way to the end of it.
    Process:
    Step 1:
Firstly, we need to organize the host library, I tidied mine up, removing excess playlists, random files, things like that. this will make thing a bit easier in the later stages of this process.
Once the library is tidied up, move the entire "iTunes" folder from your Home directory to the "//localhost" directory (The Macintosh HD) and ensure that files are on the same level as the "Applications", "Users", "Library" and "System" directories; this will ensure that the files in the library are available to all users on the machine (this also works for networks)
Optionally you can set the ownership of the folder to the 'administrator' account (the user who will be hosting the library.), you may also like to set the permissions of 'you can' to "Read & Write" (assuming that you are doing this through the user who will host the library); secondly you should set the "Owner" to the administrator who will be hosting the library and set their "access" to "Read & Write" (this will ensure that the administrator has full access to the folder). The final part of this step involves setting access for the "Others" tab to "Read Only" this will ensure that the other users can view but not modify the contents on the folder.
    Overview:
So far we have done the following steps:
    1. Organized the host library.
    2. Placed the iTunes directory into a 'public' directory so that other users may use it. (this step is essential if you plan on sharing the library across multiple accounts on the same machine. NOTE: this step is only necessary if you are wanting to share you library across multiple accounts on the same machine, if you simply want to share the music across a network, use the iTunes sharing facility.
    3. set ownership and permissions for the iTunes music folder.
    Step 2:
Currently the administrator is the only user who can use this library, however we will address this soon. In this step we will enable iTunes music sharing in the administrator's account, this will enable other users to access the files in the library.
If you are not logged in as the administrator, do so; secondly, open iTunes and select "Preferences" from the "iTunes" menu, now click the "Sharing" tab, if "share my library on my local network" is not checked, the radio buttons below this will now become active, you may choose to share the entire libraries contents, or share only selected content.
Sharing only selected content may be useful if their is explicit content in the library and minors use the network or machine that the library is connected to.
If you have selected "share entire library" go to Step 3, if you have selected share "share selected playlists" read on.
After clicking "share selected playlists" you must then select the playlists that you intend to share across your accounts and network. Once you have finished selecting the playlists, click "OK" to save the settings.
    Overview:
    In this step we:
    1. Enabled iTunes sharing in the administrator's account, now, users on the local network may access the iTunes library, however, users on the same machine may not.
    Step 3:
Now we will enable users on the same machine to access the library on the machine. This is achieved by logging in as each user, opening iTunes, opening iTunes preferences, and clicking "look for shared music". now all users on the machine may also access the library that the administrator controls.
This in effect will mean that the user will not need to use their user library, it will be provided to them via a pseudo network connection.
As a secondary measure, I have chosen to write a generic login script that will move any content from the user's "Music/iTunes/iTunes Music" directory to the trash and then empties the user's trash.
This is done through the use of an Automator Application: this application does the following actions.
    1. Uses the "Finder" action "Get Specified Finder Items"
    1a. The user's "~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music" folder
    2. Uses the "Finder" action "Get Folder Contents"
    3. Uses the "Finder" action "Move to Trash"
    4. Uses the "Automator" action "Run AppleScript"
    4a. with the following:
    on run {input, parameters}
    tell application "Finder"
    empty trash
    end tell
    return input
    end run
IMPORTANT: Once the script is adapted to the user account it must be set as a login item. in order to keep the script out of the way i have placed it in the user's "Library" directory, in "Application Support" under "iTunes".
    Overview:
    Here we:
    1. Enabled iTunes sharing in the user accounts on the host machine, in effect allowing all users of the machine to view a single iTunes library.
    2. (Optional) I have created a login application that will remove any content that has been added to user iTunes libraries, this in effect stops other users of the machine from adding music and files to iTunes.
    Step 4:
If it is not already enabled, open system preferences and enable Fast User Switching in Accounts Options.
    Summary:
We have shared a single iTunes library across multiple user account, while still allowing for network sharing. This method is designed to save space on machines, particularly those with smaller hard drives.
I hope that this hint proves to be helpful and I hope everybody will give me feedback on my process.
    regards,
    Pete.
