Itunes 7 smart playlists all screwed up

so i noticed my smart playlists are all screwy with the new itunes. for example. i have my genres in different catagories like rock and rap. anytime when im editing a smart playlist and i choose an option of "this genre DOES NOT CONTAIN" it screws up the entire genre selection. im getting rap songs in my rock catagories... anyone else having this problem?

Maybe it's something related to your iTunes library files. Close iTunes, go to your iTunes music folder, copy the .itl and .xml files and make a copy of them anywhere you want, then delete them from your iTunes music folder. Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder in your iTunes music folder, copy the .itl file and paste it where the other .itl library file was (your iTunes music folder). Now, change its name like this: if it's called iTunes Library 09-12-06, rename it just "iTunes Library" (.itl). Hopefully that'll do the trick. Reopen iTunes and check everything is OK.

  • "Smart" playlists all screwed up after downloading iTunes 7

Okay, so I downloaded iTunes 7 this morning and have so far been lucky that all of my music is playing perfectly. I just have a different problem: when I play a song iTunes displays the correct information, but when I look at my "recently played" playlist it shows completely different songs as having played...it's completely ridiculous and I can't figure out how to make it right again...any ideas?

  • ITunes Smart Playlist Glitch

In the past, I've had no problem organizing my music via the rating system. I had a smart playlist named "Unrated" where all of my songs that had not yet received a rating would automatically be sent. Recently (I've upgraded / changed so much that I can't pinpoint what change the culprit may be) I have found that my "Unrated" smart playlist is acting up.
Problem: My smart playlist with the filter "Rating is 0 stars" becomes populated with songs in iTunes and is synced to my iPhone, but on my iPhone the playlist is empty.
    Specs: iPhone 5S 7.0.4, Windows 7, iTunes 11.1.3.8
Other playlists work fine. Smart playlists with filters dealing with any specific rating (other than none) work fine. Smart playlists with random filters work fine. It's just the 0 rating filters that give me problems. In any case, the playlists DO appear on my iPhone when I sync--the 0 rating playlists, however, always appear empty.
I've done a hard and a soft reset of the iPhone. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, and Apple Application Support.
I'd love to know if anyone has a solution, has experienced this before, or has any insight. Thanks!
    -Jeff

After some digging, I found a workaround that seems to do the trick, although a workaround isn't exactly what I was looking for.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1067876?start=0&tstart=0
Basically it explains to create a NEW smart playlist pointing to the smart playlist that isn't working via the smart playlist filter "Playlist is <brokensmartplaylistname>".
It's interesting that a supposed glitch from 2007 is strangely similar to the one I'm encountering today. The weirest part is that for years I've successfully had my smart playlist working with no problems and only recently have I run into this glitch. I can only hope that it leaves me as quickly as it came.

  • ITunes smart playlists MISSING!!

This is so annoying!! My recetly added playlist (and also all other smart playlists) disappeared on both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S all of a sudden when I synchronized them.
I have tried unchecking the live update button of the playlist and then synchronizing my iPhone 4S again but it doesn't work. Could someone please please tell me how to fix it?
B.T.W.  This seems a long lasting headache for many iTunes users, I hope Apple won't be so self-sufficient to lose insights about our concerns.

Doublechecking. Do you still get the issue if you update to iTunes 10.6.3.25?
From the notes for the release:
Addresses a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive when syncing an iPad (1st generation) that contains an iBooks textbook
Fixes a problem where photos synced to a device may appear in an unexpected order
Resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly delete playlists created on a device

  • Ipad and itunes smart playlists

    Hello
I made a smart playlist which includes all podcasts with a certain word in the title like "News". I also have another smart playlist which includes all items from the first playlist, with an added criterion of never having been played before, and this is called "News 0". I cannot combine both because "News" has a number of "or'd" conditions, each selecting one keyword, and I want to add just one "and" condition which is the playcount=0, however the Smart Playlist rules UI doesnt allow this.
I sync all my unplayed podcasts to my iPad, and within the music section, sync all my playlists as well.
When I select the first playlist on my ipad, I get what I expect, which is all my unplayed podcasts from the News playlist, because only those have been syncd to the iPad, and it is smart enough to not show me the ones that were on my main machine's view but not sync'd. This is nice.
However I would expect the same result when I select the second playlist "News 0". However, this has no content in it.
I can only imagine this is because a smart playlist that depends on another smart playlist is not working properly when pushed to the remote device?
    Any ideas?

    1. Right click the playlist > "Edit Smart Playlist"
    2. Check "live updating" (or make sure it is already ticked"
    3. Click "+" to add a rule.
    4. Add the following rule: "Playlist" "is" "Music"
Only works if the playlist is music, obviously if it's an audiobook/podcast playlists edit the rule accordingly.
    Hope this helps

  • How do you set up nested rules for iTunes smart playlist

How do you set up nested rules for a iTune smart playlist

    Hello \"alice\",
It sounds like you want to add additional criteria to your Smart Playlists.  I found an article with steps you can use to refine your Smart Playlist.  Step 2 specifically has what I think you are looking for:
    2. To have iTunes add songs that match specific criteria, make sure to select "Match the following rule," then make your selections from the pop-up menus.
For example, you might want iTunes to only add songs that are by a particular artist, or songs with at least a four-star rating.
To add additional matching criteria, click the Add button.
You can find the full article here:
iTunes: How to create a Smart Playlist
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1801
The article says it is archived.  In the current version of iTunes, in step 1 you will select File>New>Smart Playlist.  Also, if you need to edit an existing Smart Playlist, you can right click (or hold command while you click) on it and select Edit Smart Playlist.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Itunes Smart Playlists

With the recent update of itunes I downloaded, my smart playlists have become less customizable. Before I was able to create criteria and then sub-criteria within the original criteria. However, this new version removed the sub-criteria option. Is there another way?

Ah! You're brilliant and I'm completely blind. Thank you for answering a foolish question!

  • Use applescript to create itunes smart playlists

    hi
    is the subject possible?
my setup uses an intricate system of smart playlists building other smart playlists. when i add a new "theme", as i call it, like "party", "chart", "sad", "happy", etc, i dont want to have to go back through and create dozens of smart playlists each time... that is a job for my friend, applescript!
    regards
    jingo_man

I am also interested in an answer on this. I'm not an AppleScript guru but I'm learning. My goal is to create a Smart Playlist with two criteria -- one is that the tracks exist in a specific other Smart Playlist and the other is that the track's play count is less than the average play count of all tracks in the other playlist.
I have already managed to use AppleScript to find the average play count of all tracks in a selected Smart Playlist, I just don't yet know how to use that to automatically generate a second Smart Playlist.

  • Smart Playlist: All podcasts that are not new (not listened too)

    Hi y'all,
Can anyone tell me how to make a smart playlist showing all of my played podcasts? Tried "Podcast" = true and Playcount more than 0, but my podcasts don't seem to maintain a playcount. Any other suggestions?

How about "Last Played" "is after" "1/1/81"?

  • Help creating a smart playlist - all video from one group and fill to size

I have two classifications of videos:
    A) current videos added randomly to iTunes
    B) old videos I'm trying to work through in chronological order but are less important than 'A'
I have a 8GB Touch so space is limited. I always have 2500 MB available for videos.
It was easy enough to separate the two classes of videos into two smart playlists, A and B.
Now I need your help to create a third Smart playlist that contains everything from A , then fills whatever is left of the 2500 MB with videos from B.
Or, if playlists aren't an option, do you have any other ideas?
    Thanks

The new tools in iTunes 9 made this possible, at least good enough.

  • Front Row not wotking correctly with iTunes smart playlist based on rating

    Hello!
I’m a new Mac user and I love the integration between Front Row and iTunes, but I’ve found an annoying bug.
In iTunes I have a smart playlist based on rating, something similar to Top Rated playlist, which works great in iTunes itself and on my iPhone and iPod. The problem is that when I play it in Front Row it adds at the bottom whatever song from my library. Anyone knows how to fix it?? Afterwards the whole thing would be perfect!
Both iTunes and FR are updated to the latest version.
    Many thanks in advance

  • ITunes playlists all screwed up...HELP!

So I opened itunes today and I noticed that all of the playlists I have got scrambled. The songs are still there, but the order is screwed up on all of them and I need songs to be in specific order on most of them. Is there anyway to revert back to the original order??
    Thanks

Also, with Shuffle turned off you can click on the header of any column to sort by that column. In a playlist, if you click on the extreme left column that has the row numbers, you can manually reorder any tracks you want.

  • ITunes 9 not allowing most smart playlists to automatically sync with iPod

Oh dearie me. This is another major blunder for iTunes 9 - which I cannot see anyone else has noticed yet (but sorry if I couldn't find an existing related post).
Since upgrading to iTunes 9- almost all of my smart playlists (whick worked perfectly before) have disappeared from my iPod. They have also removed themselves from the list in iTunes where I choose which playlists to sync. Yes- I use the 'sync only checked songs & playlists' option (but please don't suggest I manually manage music, as I've been there before).
The problem seems to happen when a smart playlist references 2 or more other (smart or normal) playlists in iTunes. This excludes about 95% of my playlists from syncing in iTunes 9.
Before the upgrade I noticed that iTunes posted an exclamation mark next to any playlist on my iPod that had a rule referencing a playlist in iTunes- but they still sunc perfectly for years. I mean if Apple allowed us to make our own smart playlists only for the iPod- then I would understand- but its the only way I can see to have a playlist for example that plays all favourite but not recently played dance music (regardles of actual genre); nor anything I have moved to a manual playlist called 'not for syncing'.
As a test, I tried an experiment with a new smart playlist which said so long as the song appears in (all) 2 smart playlists- to see when it would become 'syncable'. As would be expected- it was not available to sync. As soon as I deleted the 2nd playlist rule- ie it only had to be in 1 playlist, it became 'syncable'. As soon as I added a 2nd rule again- be it a smart or normal playlist- it became 'unsyncable' again (disappeared from the sync list).
Apple please fix this ASAP. I cannot see this as being desirable behavior in any way, shape or form.
And while you are at it with the new improvements with iTunes 9 playlisting- please add an option to exclude certain 'match' parameters- eg match x and y, but exclude anything that matches z. Besides allowing for much better playlisting, that would (to a degree) also provide a workable workaround to the problem above.
    Yours faithfully,
    Mike

Cheers for chiming in- but I don't think that will solve this problem. I have no podcasts on my iPod- only mp3s. My problem is I have way too much music in my library- over 300GB. So I have all my iTunes smart playlists- eg genre Dubstep- but then I have an iPod version of each of these eg Dubstep iPod- which says match both criteria- playlist is Dubstep, & playlist is not 'Master not sync'. Every smart playlist on my iPod revolves around this playlist- whose rules are if any of the following 2 criteria match: rating is not between 1&2 stars; playlist is not the normal manual playlist called 'not for iPod sync'- where I drop any mp3s that I don't need on my iPod. This scheme worked perfectly before.
But I am gonna chew on what you said today- maybe there is a clue in there or maybe if I experiment with the 'music' rule. Either way- this is not an improvement- it's about 200 steps back. I still maintain that the problem I am seeing is not intentional coding. Something broke in the codebase & now iTunes 9 has playlist / syncing bugs which need fixing.
Either that, or Apple need to finally release a 500GB iPod- so I can get rid of my iPod specific playlists & sync all my iTunes playlists. Then I would even consider putting podcasts on there as well...;) Heck maybe even some video... crazy idea, I know.

  • Smart Playlist - Ratings fields are blank and crashing iTunes

My iTunes has recently developed this problem where if I open a Smart Playlist and select "Ratings", the Ratings field is completely white.  There are no stars or greyed out stars.  If I try to click in that field, it crashes iTunes.   Upon reopening iTunes, it runs a "Checking iTunes Library..." function but it still doesn't work correctly.   This is happening for existing and newly created Smart Playlist.
All song rating appear normally within the normal browsing window.
Has anyone seen this?  Anyone know of a fix?
    Thanks

After troubleshooting this by throwing away iTunes preferences, restoring previous iTunes libraries from Time Machine, reinstalling 10.6.7 Combo and iTunes, reimaging the computer from scratch, the root of the cause finally appeared.
After reimaging the computer and running disk diagnostics, the hard disk was failing at times.  I then determined that the hard drive had to be replaced but I wasn't sure if this would fix my iTunes smart playlist ratings problem.
I bought a new 500 gb drive to replace the original 120 gb drive, which was 4.5 years old.
After restoring from Time Machine and booting up into my main account, my iTunes smart playlist finally started working.  I'm guessing that because I have an enormous iTunes library, something about pulling the data was straining the computer.  That doesn't seem right though because creating/editing a smart playlist should just be a regular window without any labor intensive hd actions until you close it.
