Itunes 8.0 doesn't start up

hi there,
i just downloaded and installed the itunes 8.0 update on my macbook pro with osx 10.4.11
when i start it up, the icon bounces in the dock, the little black triangle is visible, but then it just goes again, and itunes does not start up... i tried to download again, this time from the apple site. (first time as a automatic software update) but with no result.
please help!

found out that you have to disable itunes in shapeshifter.
this seems to work, hopefully this was the last 8.0 prob....

  • Since iPhone 4.3.4, iTunes 10.4 doesn't start up automatically

Since I updated my iPhone 4 to 4.3.4, iTunes 10 v.10.4 no longer starts up automatically when I connect my iPhone, though "Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected" remains checked.  iPhoto '11 v.9.1.5, however, still starts up automatically. I'm running OS X v.10.6.8.

thx. my IT guy told me about itunes helper which i verified was there in account preferences. but it didn't have an app icon, it was just a blank doc icon. also checked activity monitor to see if it was running or not. which it wasn't. then he fixed it so that it was repaired and showed up as an itunes icon, so it was working. reinstalled itunes and it launched when i plugged the iphone in. but the iphone still wouldn't show up in devices (in fact there was no DEVICES column to be seen).
when that didn't work, i got an old snow leopard disk and reinstalled 10.6 fresh. still didn't work. so he opened up preferences and found that there were A TON of extensions, apps, preferences that i really didn't need that were set up by my previous IT guy (e.g. growl, iclipboard, perian, etc etc etc). i honestly had no idea what they were. he elimintated them one by one until it was virtually clean. in the meantime, he went into the RAID utility app and performed redundancy verification and initialization tasks, and before those painfully long tasks even finished IT FINALLY WORKED! i finally have my iphone back. the huge lesson here for me is, when in doubt keep as a lean and clean system as you can! if you don't know what something is in your preferences, you probably don't need it! oh, and one added benefit, my system runs faster now!

  • Itunes 7.01 doesn't start up

itunes doesn't want to launch. In the beginning it stopped after accepting the license and then closed down with this error: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If I hold in the shift key while launching itunes I get a bit further. Itunes asks me a library (although I already had a library from itunes 6) and then it shuts down with the same error: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
It doesn't matter if i go to an existing library or create a new one.
I don't have norton or NIS, but I do have Mcaffee Virus protector. However, this is switched off.

I made a new account and then it works beautifully.
okay ... usually in the itunes 6.0.x-and-earlier-days, that indicated a problem with the itunes preferences files in the user account in which itunes was crashing. (there's a different set of preference files in each different XP user account, which is how we can get this "launch in one account, crash in another" behavior.)
so we're going to try "rebuilding" the itunes preference files in the account in which you're crashing.
quit itunes. log into the account you're crashing in.
make sure you have "show hidden files and folders" switched on. to do that, open up My Computer, and in the Tools menu, choose "Folder Options..." Then go to the View tab, and then in the "Advanced settings", make sure that there is a check mark next to "Show hidden files and folders".
now navigate to the following folder and open it up:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\
("<username>" is the name of the account you're crashing in.)
inside, you should see an "iTunes.pref" file and an "iTunesPref.xml" file. rename them "iTunes.pref1" and iTunesPref.xml1". move them to your desktop.
now navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\
inside, you should see another "iTunes.pref" file and another "iTunesPref.xml" file. rename them "iTunes.pref2" and iTunesPref.xml2". move them to your desktop.
restart the PC. log in to the user account that itunes is crashing in. try launching itunes again.
the itunes setup assistant should run. (much like it did the first time you launched itunes after you installed it for the first time.) it's rebuilding the itunes preference files while you're doing that.
after the itunes setup assistant has done its business, does itunes open up normally for you?

  • ITunes on 64 bit doesn't start, recognised as 32 bit program

    Hi,
    I use windwows 7 Professional 64 bit,
when I run itunes installer everything goes fine (except that it installs in x86 folder!) but when I try to run itunes it just doesn't start, nothing shows up and in task manager i see "itunes.exe*32" which means it is recognised as a 32bit program!!!
    how can I solve this?
I also tried with itunes 8 and 9 but nothing worked

no error messages at all. ... quick time works
many thanks ... that's got one possibility with an error-message-free iTunes launch failure ruled out already.
Checking on another possibility that has been common in recent times, now.
Try (by way of experiment) disabling the BonJour Service.
In your Start Menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
    Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Maximise the window to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the BonJour Service and select "Properties". In the "General" tab, set Start-up type to "Disabled".
Restart the PC, and try launching iTunes again. Does it launch this time?
If iTunes launches with the BonJour Service disabled, by any chance do you have a recent version of IOBit's Advanced SystemCare utility currently installed on the PC? If so, try uninstalling and reinstalling Advanced SystemCare. Can you launch iTunes without having to disable the BonJour Service now?

  • Ipod suffle 3g recognized by iTunes but doesn't start! (water damage)

My ipod shuffle 3G has a water damage. it shows the red/pink indicator.
It doesn't starts but it connects to iTunes. I can move songs to my iPod shuffle and other stuffs. But it doesn't start.
I have opened my iPod shuffle. It had green sedimentation in it. I cleaned it but it still doesn't start and is still recognized by iTunes.
Does anybody have an idea what the reason could be?

If it doesn't power on when you try to use it, the damage may be to the battery.  When it's connected, it is getting power from the USB connection, so it works.  When you disconnected, the battery does not hold a charge, so it is dead.
Since you know how to open it, you may want to try leaving it open in a dry ventilated place for a few days.  If the cause is moisture shorting something out, when the moisture evaporates, it may work again.

Try this from MacFixIt as well:
In the case of drive directory damage or problems with permissions, the solution is usually to use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the disk. Of course, you won't be able to perform this operation normally (simply launching the Disk Utility application, located in Applications/Utilities, and initiating a disk repair) if your system will not startup. So two options exist:
    * Insert your Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) media (DVD or CD) and restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Once the computer has booted from the installation disc, select "Utilities" from the menubar and open Disk Utility. Repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility and restart your system.
    * Alternatively, you can repair the disk while booted in single user mode if you do not have access to a retail Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) DVD/CD. To startup in single user mode, hold down the "Command" and "S" keys simultaneously at startup. Once properly booted, type the command fsck at the prompt. Repeat these process until no errors appear.

  • (Windows XP) iTunes doesn't start

    Hi,
My iTunes under Windows XP doesn't start since one week: I can see it started in the taskbar like other applications, as if it were minimized, but nothing else. No error message. If I click on it, nothing happens, if only it doesn't freeze the complete PC. I can only right click > Close.
I uninstalled all iTunes, then installed it again, and it still didn't work.
I downloaded iTunes latest version again to be sure. Still the same.
I looked for solutions over the web, but with no error message it looks difficult to find a case like mine.
    Any idea someone?

    Hey hervelam,
We have a great resource that will help troubleshoot this issue. It may be isolated to third-party software or plugins, which would explain why uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes has not resolved your issue. For information, please refer to the following:

I updated iTunes to 10.4 version and now it doesn't start and send a messages "iTunes has detected an error and must be closed". Someone have the same problem and how can we repair our installation insted of change the windows XP installation? Best regards

Only way to get iMac starting again was to re-install 10.4.4 from DVD, and then update it into 10.4.6. For a while it worked perfectly, just as before.
Then I tried to print to CD with my EPSON Stylus Photo 950 from Adobe Photoshop Elements (2.0). It didn't print anything, but printer started flashing all lights. The print job was not performed, so I did remove it from the Printer Utility. After that the iMac started "ticking" again, same noise than before, after 10.4.7 installation. I did re-boot iMac. It never started, it does stuck on gray screen (gray block running clockwise). HW test from DVD didn't find any problems (extended search looping 3 times). But Disk Utility found hard drive to have inaccurate node structure, it could not fix it.
Apple support recommended to use DiskWarrior. However, it does not support (yet) Intel Macs. I haven't got TechTool Pro 4.5.1 anywhere. iMac does start on to FireWire mode (T at boot), but I cannot see the disk from 10.2.8 iMac.
So, obvisously the problem is not 10.4.7. I believe it to be ESPON printer driver compatibility on Mac OSX. This does not suprise me, EPSON printers *****, I shall never purchase one again. However, disk catalog structure should not get messed by one faulty printer driver!
