Itunes 8.0 using Airdisk causes Aiport Extreme to crash...

Hi,
After upgrading to latest version of itunes I have encountered ALOT of problems with my airport extreme base station. Basically, whenever Itunes starts or tries to access a file on airdisk drive it causes the airport extreme station to crash.
Any ideas? I'm running all the latest versions of relevant software, airdisk, airport etc.

Has it actually crashed your system? It doesn't effect everyone.
If it has crashed your computer make sure any logitech or HP drivers you have are up to date. It isn't really iTunes but the new USB drivers that come with it and get installed. The crash only occurs when you go to sync an iPod or iPhone.

Itunes remote speaker using Airport Express and Extreme

I have purchased an Airport Extreme and Airport Express, so I can listen Itunes music on my stereo system. For some reason, there is simply no remote speaker selection button on the bottom right of the Itunes windows. Does it has to do with the fact that I am using an old Mac OS X?
My Macmini has no airport card, so I connected the ethernet to the Airport extreme, and plugged the Airport express few feet from the base. Nothing but an orange tilting light comes out of the little box. I can surf the net perfectly but the Itunes is ignoring all my investment on the couple of Airport boxes i purchase...What I am doing wrong?

Yes, I thought that purchasing the Airport extreme as
the ethernet interfase directly connected to the
MacMini, was almost the same as having the airport
card inside the Mini. Where did I get lost?? I have
the extreme directly to the mini, and an express
plugged somewhere close and nothing happens...
The problem is that the mini can only stream iTunes to an Airport Express via Airport. While you have connected it to an Airport basestation, as far as the mini is concerned, it is working via ethernet because that's how the data is leaving the system. It doesn't have an Airport card, thus it can't stream iTunes content to an Airport Express.

Network causes Safari/Mail to crash

Hi,
Connecting to my school WEP network runs fine, however, trying to access the internet through a proxy using Safari, or trying to receive mail using Mail causes both programs to crash.
Conversely, Firefox does not experience the same crashes.
All this did not happen before the 10.5.1 update.
Is there anything I have done/can do to sort this?

Using airdisk- how fast is it?

my macbook (2 gh, maxed the memory at 2gb, still have the 80g hd it came with) is more or less too small for me at this point, but instead of shelling out for a new computer i'm trying to extend the hard disk with an external hard drive. i'm thinking about trading up from my current airport express to the EXTREME! version so that i can use airdisk to access the drive instead of having to be plugged in. is this a good idea, or will i be dealing with slowness and frustration? anyone have experience or tips about trying to do this?

many users do this and are very happy with the performance. i have an external drive hooked to each my TC and my extreme.
for my iTunes library, however, i prefer using a firewire 800 drive connected directly to my MBP.
or will i be dealing with slowness and frustration?

Music files on external HD, Aiport Extreme, multiple computers

I have all of my music files (about 400 GB) on an external hard drive which is attached via USB to an Aiport Extreme router. I am using a MacBook (black) to rip and play those music files wirelessly from that external hard drive, using the iTunes Library index/data file that resides on that MacBook (black).
I would like to be able to play the music that resides on that external hard drive on two other computers - a MacBook Pro and a Windows desktop, each of which have access to that Airport Extreme router that the hard drive is attached to. (I don't necessarily need to rip or download from either of those machines. Just play. The MacBook black will be the "main" iTunes machine.) What is the best way to set up and run iTunes on those other two machines? Just point their own iTunes Library index files at the Airport Extreme and let them Add To Library in iTunes, on each machine, all of the songs on the hard drive? Do I need to be careful about confusing each of the Library files with each other or keeping things "matched up"? Also, I certainly don't want all that music to load onto the hard drives of those two machines.
Keep in mind, this is not a case of having a "server" that is always on, nor is the Airport Extreme/external HD setup a true "intelligent" NAS setup.

It sounds like your music is on an external hard drive, and you would like iTunes to point to that library and store all your music files there. I found some resources that you can use achieve this.
To choose the iTunes Library on your external drive, follow these steps:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
You can then choose the iTunes Library on your external drive. You can find the full article here:

Once you have iTunes pointing to that library, you can consolidate your iTunes Library so all the files are stored in one place:
To consolidate your library:
Choose File > Library > Organize Library.

To create folders (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Audiobooks, and so on) inside your iTunes folder, and place all your imported media files in the appropriate folders, select “Reorganize files.”

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue?

Using AirDisk for backups

Does anyone know if there is a way to rsync or otherwise do a fast copy (perhaps through scripts) directly to the AirDisk. Ideally I'm thinking would/does AirPort Extreme n support rsync directly or offer an rsync url so that the source Mac doesn't have to do the extra lifting by being forced to do a local rsync when in fact the destination drive is remote (AirPort Extreme n).
Example rsynd I do is,
sudo rsync -WavE /Volumes/localsourcevol/ /Volumes/AirDisk_vol/
but it is incredibly slow and tends to slow down over time. For example, an rsync operation that would take perhaps 30min between a PM G4 (wired) and an iBook G4 (wireless), has taken over 16hrs (without signs of being anywhere near complete so I usually kill the rsync) from the PM G4 to the mounted AirDisk on the extreme that would otherwise be routing the traffic to the iBook.
Something else I've found painfully slow and typically ends up failing as a result of timeout is Backup 3.1 (courtesy of .Mac) to backup my homedir to the attached AirDisk. Generally it seems the drive falls asleep and the AirPort is unable to wake when activity demands it.
I'm using a WD My Book Pro Edition II 1TB (the triple interface model) drive attached to the AirPort Extreme N in RAID1 mode (mirrored so I have ~500GB capacity).

I would love to hear if you ever get this to work. My experience with AEBS has been quite poor.
The most obvious problem is that AEBS does not support owner and permissions. This quite excludes backuping a bootable volume to it.

Have you tried a reset by holding the power and home buttons for ten seconds until the apple appears?
Since it's multiple different import devices not working with the CCK, it appears to be on the iPad side...
If the reset doesn't help, try a restore from within iTunes on the computer.

Setting up Aiport Extreme for wireless hard drive access

I recently bought an Aiport Extreme Base Station, but I am struggling to set it up.
I want to use the Extreme to access my external hard drive (a Western Digital) wirelessly. I also have an Airport Express, which I currently use to extend my wirless network, and to connect to my speakers with AirTunes. My goal is to access and play my music library (contained on my external hard drive) without wiring my macbook to any external devices.
I already have an adequate wireless network in my home (my wireless router is a 2Wire 3800HGV-B, provided by AT&T).
So, I've already tried to set up the Extreme and failed. Rather than describe what I've tried already, let me tell you what I want, ideally:
1. Access my hard drive wirelessly
2. Access the internet and my hard drive at the same time (I assume this means that I need my Extreme to join my existing wireless network rather than create a new network, since i don't think I can be on two wireless networks at once)
3. Keep my Airport Extreme in a separate room from my 2Wire Gateway (this is preferred but not essential -- if they absolutely need to be connected with an ethernet cable for some reason, I can do that)
Can anyone help me through the setup process? In case you haven't noticed, I don't really know what I'm talking about, so step-by-step instructions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) will not wirelessly join the wireless network provided by the 2Wire.
You will need to either connect the AEBS to the 2Wire via Ethernet or replace the 2Wire with the AEBS.

You will not believe this.. but it is not possible.
You do not directly set the IP of the AE. It is set by dhcp when you select the first two octets.. then the third you can set to your liking.. but the last octet for the actual IP of the TC is set automagically and always to .1
There might be a work around.. don't you just love it when apple make these things like this.
Export the configuration file.
Now open that file in textedit.. locate the current ip address.
<key>laIP</key>
<string>10.0.1.1</string>
Change it and save the file.. then import it into the AE..
I am using my TC right now as PPPOE client and it is not being co-operative.. it might work.. it might not.. do locate every instance of the current base IP and change to your new one.

Can´t see 2 external HD´s connected to Aiport Extreme

I can´t seem to find/see my two external HD´s inside Final Cut Pro X.
I have my two G-Drive HD´s hooked up via a USB-hub to my Aiport Extreme and therefore running wirelessly from my Macbook Pro. It all works just fine by having referenced files with Aperture this way...
Must the external HD be physically connected to the Macbook Pro to be able for it to see inside Final Cut Pro X?
The format seems to be say "AppleShare" when I look on the Info on each drive.
I am running out of storage space and also for the future would like to use an external for saving my projects and event files.

Let's double-check your AEBSn's settings...

You can't from Apple, they don't let you buy iTunes gift cards with an Apple Store gift card. You could see if a different store in your country might let you (though they possibly won't), or try selling the card to somebody e.g. family, friend, eBay etc
