ITunes 8.1 breaks syncing with 2nd gen iPod shuffle

So, I downloaded iTunes 8.1 as soon as it came out as all the new features seemed pretty benign, and I've never had issues with any iTunes update going all the way back to 1.0. However, the 8.1 update rendered my 2nd gen shuffle no better than a $5 MP3 player.
Keeping in mind I use my shuffle primarily for listening to podcasts, here's the issues:
+1) dragging files to the iPod that already exist on the device+
8.0: pops a dialog warning that some of the items are already on the device and gives you the option to skip those ones and copy the rest. I use this all the time as I just do a select all and drag everything in my Podcasts list to the iPod to get new stuff onto it
8.1: it gladly copies the duplicates onto the iPod again
+2) order of podcasts when added to the iPod+
8.0: podcasts get put at the end but when you disconnect, they get moved to the beginning of the play order on the shuffle and are arranged in the same order as the sort set on your Podcasts list (in my case, ascending Date Released). This was great as all the podcasts would end up right at the beginning of the shuffle in the order I wanted
8.1: podcasts get put at the end and stay there, in whatever order they were in from the location I dragged them from (i.e. the literal order they appear in the Podcasts list. So while in 8.0 they'd be arranged in date order regardless of whether different podcast subscriptions were mixed together, in 8.1 they were placed into alphabetical podcast order, subsorted by date)
+3) automatic removal of deleted podcasts+
8.0: a podcast deleted from the Podcasts list that's also on the shuffle will immediately cause a sync event and remove it from the shuffle
8.1: no sync event, deleted podcast stays on the shuffle until manually removed
+4) ability to play songs from the shuffle in iTunes when the shuffle is connected+
8.0: double-clicking a song that's on the shuffle by selecting the device and then its Music tab, plays it (and also causes immediate and constant syncing, which is weird, but also expected)
8.1: double-clicking a song has no effect. Selecting a song and clicking iTunes' play button does nothing
The problems are occurring on my Mac Pro. I initially upgraded to iTunes 8.1 via Software Update, but tried reinstalling via the standalone installer. No luck. I also tried restoring the iPod to factory settings twice with no luck.
I also did some tests on my MacBook Pro which still had iTunes 8.0 on it. The same "correct" behaviour was encountered on the MBP. As soon as I upgraded to 8.1 via the downloaded installer, the same "incorrect/broken" behaviour was encountered as on the Mac Pro. I restored the iPod in iTunes 8.0 and 8.1 and that still didn't fix the behaviour when using it under 8.1. Additionally, on the MacBook Pro I removed the iTunes library and started with a fresh one just in case there was something funky with it.
Anyone else having these problems? I know at least one person whose 2nd gen shuffle works with 8.1 as it always had, so I'm not sure what's up with my shuffle.

I'm having most/all of the problems mentioned here. As far as manually ordering tracks, that doesn't work either. As near as I've been able to determine, tracks are played in the order they were put on the Shuffle, no matter how you order them in the list. The only way I've been able to get them in the order I want them is to put them all into a separate play list, set the desired order, delete everything off of the Shuffle, then copy the whole play list onto the Shuffle. By the way, deleting tracks off of the Shuffle doesn't seem to generate a Sync event by itself. While the list window shows the total size of the items in the list at the bottom (and it decreases when items are deleted), clicking on the Settings tab shows a bar at the bottom showing the same amount of space being used before the deletion. You have to move something else to the Shuffle to make it Sync.
Also, the one problem I've experienced with 8.1 that I haven't seen anyone else mention is connecting the Shuffle and having it show files that hadn't played as having been played and other files that had played not showing as such. For example, say the last thing I did before disconnecting was to put 20 new files on the Shuffle at the top of its list. It will play them last because they were the last items added. But when I reconnect after playing 20 or more tracks, the list shows the top tracks as having been played including those 20 tracks that I hadn't gotten to.

  • Some songs can't be loaded on 2nd gen ipod shuffle (question with answer)

I'm getting the following message when trying to load some songs on to my 2nd gen iPod shuffle:
"Some of the items in the iTunes library, including 'Allegro', were not copied to the iPod "iPod" because they cannot be played on this iPod." When I click on the details triangle I get "Allegro" was not copied because the audio format is not supported by the iPod "iPod".
This is happening for many songs that were previously loaded on this iPod. The songs were all loaded into iTunes from CDs. I have tried the iPod reset utility, deleting all songs and reloading, selecting a single song to sync, no luck.
When I do a "Get Info" on these songs they say they were encoded with either iTunes 6.0.5 or iTunes 7.0.2.
OK. Even before I was able to post the question, I found the answer. If I select the songs and from the "Advanced" menu select "Create AAC version", the AAC version can be copied to the iPod. Get Info shows the encoding has changed so AAC and iTunes 9.0.1.
Hope this helps someone else with a similar problem.

You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

  • 2nd gen ipod shuffle will charge with one computer (vista) but not the other computer (windows 8).  Please help!

My 2nd gen ipod shuffle will charge on my old vitsta computer but not my new windows 8 computer. Does anyone know why that might be? The new computer recognizes the ipod and I can see everything on it, change settings, etc. it just won't charge. Is there a reason as to why this should be happening?

    problems?
No. ALL shuffles are FAT32 format.
The other problem is that it will not sync and
transfer any music from itunes library. I am trying
to transfer simple mp3 files that should be compliant

  • 2nd Gen iPod shuffle is not recognized by iTunes or computer

I read the other posts about people's 2nd Gen Ipod shuffles not being rcognized by iTunes or their computer, but none of them seemed to fit.
I have had my iPod shuffle for less than a week. Last time I had my iPod connected to iTunes in the "Settings" section I clicked "Do not automatically open iTunes and synch with iPod" or something along those lines. I assumed this meant iTunes wouldn't always open when I plugged it in to charge it.
However, now when I plug it into my computer, iTunes does not recognize it and I get a message from my computer that there is a "USB Device Not Recognized" and the error message reads: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it." It shows up as an "Unrecognized Device". I have tried plugging it into a different USB port, and I have also downloaded the "Ipod Reset Utility" to try to reset it to it's factory settings, in case that would allow it to synch up with iTunes again. This does not work. Does anyone know why this is happening, or how I can get iTunes to recognize my iPod again? Thank you!

Brand new ipod shuffle (2nd gen). When I plug it into the USB port, a "Disk Insertion" prompt warning appears with the message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." The two options in the prompt window are 'Eject' or 'Ignore.'
Having read other message boards, I decided to plug it into a PC computer and re-formatted it with FAT 32 filing system, but the exact same thing still happens. My MacBook give me the same message when I plug the shuffle to the computer. iTunes does not recognize it that anything is plugged in either.
    Any suggestions?

Nothing.  The 2nd Gen Touch is OBSOLETE and is WAY past its support life.  If you want to run the newer apps you have to buy a newer iPod.

  • I can't get my 2nd gen. ipod shuffle to charge on my new computer.

I can't get my 2nd gen. ipod shuffle to charge on my new computer.  I can prompt itunes, sync, and add/delete songs, but not charge.  I've tried to restore but that didn't work.  Advice?

Without telling us what computer models and OS versions, as well as how you're trying to update, not much help can be given.  It has nothing to do with the number of computers you have.
This question should be posted in the iTunes forum, not the iPhone.

  • 2nd Gen ipod shuffle charges on Mac but not on PC

I recently switched from Mac to PC and my 2nd-Gen ipod shuffle won't charge on PC.  The PC reads my shuffle and I'm able to transfer music from itunes, however the battery light indicator doesn't glow.  In order to charge the battery, I have to plug my ipod back to my macbook which is inconvenient.  Btw, I connect my ipod to the PC with USB 3.0 port..I have windows 7 if that's any help..  Suggestions anyone?

Also, take a look on iTunes if the battery icon is showing that the unit is in charge. Because if you're able to transfert music on it, there's no choice, there's must be electricity on it.

  • My OS X (10.9.1) won't recognize my 2nd gen iPod shuffle anymore :(

Ever since I got a new desktop Mac 10.9, my 2nd gen iPod shuffle has only shown up occasionally when I plug it in...apparently at random.  I've tried restarting with it plugged, plugging it while on, plugging it while off—no variables seem to make any difference.  Since I updated to Maverick, nothing at all seems to work anymore.  Other than that, the ancient shuffle is plugging along just fine.  Any tips?
    Thanks!

  • Is there any type of HiFi Station available for the 2nd Gen. iPod shuffle?

I was wondering if there is any type of HiFi Station available for the 2nd Gen. iPod shuffle.
With HiFi Station I mean those docking stations which directly play the music from your iPod, so that you don´t need to connect to your Computer f.e.
Does anybody know if something like this exist, or if it is only available for ALL other iPod models???
    Thanks already!
    Stefan

YOu can use one of these with any other iPod "HiFi Station": http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/dockshuffle/
Use your 2nd generation iPod shuffle in full-size Universal Dock devices.
Your iPod shuffle is an incredible entertainment value in an incredibly small package. It delivers the music just like its full-size iPod cousins. But one thing it doesn't do is fit in the dock well in your made-for-iPod speaker system.
That's why we made a Dock Adapter especially for 2nd generation iPod shuffle. The Dock Adapter is shaped just like the dock connector on the bottom of every full-size iPod. Plug it into your iPod shuffle's headphone jack, and suddenly the little guy fits in your iPod speakers just like the big guys.
Take Griffin Dock Adapter with you, and you can play your iPod shuffle wherever there's a set of Universal Dock speakers.

  • Movies converted for AppleTV won't sync to 2nd gen iPod touch with iTunes 8

I have about 40 movies that I converted to "Apple TV" format with Quicktime Pro. They all play fine on my Apple TV. But only one of them will sync with my new 2nd gen iPod touch... and that one was converted by someone else for me to Apple TV with iSquint!
iTunes tells me the remaining videos cannot be played on this iPod. ***? They play in iTunes, they play on the Apple TV... what's the difference with the iPod?
So now I'm having to completely reconvert all my movies to iPod format with the function in iTunes 8 "Create iPod or iPhone version" but this is PAINFULLY SLOW!!! One video on my brand new 3.06Ghz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo took FOUR HOURS
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone else find a faster way to fix it???
    HELP!!

    It just does.
You can do it quicker using other tools.
For instance I have a hardware device called Turbo.264 which shifts the conversion off the computer and is much quicker.
You can read all about it here :-

  • 2nd gen iPod shuffle not recognized by Yosemite or iTunes 12

I just connected my iPod shuffle (2nd gen) into my macbook for the first time since the update to Yosemite and iTunes 12.  Right when it's plugged in the iPod only blinks orange three times, then doesn't blink or light up again.  It doesn't show up in iTunes or in the finder.  It also doesn't show up in the USB devices on the system report.  It charges when plugged into a wall-USB charger, but isn't recognized at all by the mac.  Also, I'm using the factory mini-dock that came with it, which I believe to be in perfect working condition.
I know they're cheap, but I've ran thousands of miles with it and I've grown attached to it.  I've spent more time with it than most of my friends...
I'm afraid the new ones might not be as amazing as this one.
Although it is still useable, I really need some fresh music on there as my runs are beginning to get boring.
It has always connected fine with no issue, which leads me to believe its a Yosemite issue (maybe apple is trying to weed out the old iPod fossils still roaming about).  But, it may just be a coincidence that it stopped working just after the update. ...Maybe my iPod is just toast.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance!!!

    Hi
I had the same issue with my Late 2009 Mac mini running Mavericks and iTunes 12. When I connected my 2nd generation iPod shuffle it would blink amber once then do nothing. This seems to be a common problem with the iPod shuffle and newer versions of Mac OS X (10.6 and up) and iTunes albeit with somewhat varying symptoms but the same overall problem syncing the iPod with iTunes.
The predominant go-to solution is to give the iPod more power by either connecting the iPod directly to a USB port on the Mac or by disconnecting all other USB devices. On paper this makes sense.
What worked for me, however, was the opposite. After trying to solve this problem for hours (weeks, months), I had success ONLY after adding a low-powered 4-port USB hub to the chain between the iPod and the Mac. I suspect this had the effect of throttling the power supplied to the iPod from the Mac. I was able to perform a restore on the iPod then sync my music over.
I can't tell you much about the USB hub except that it is running at USB 1.1 speeds (12 Mb/sec). In theory a USB 1.1 extension cable should also do the trick. You might even be able to use the USB hub in old wired Apple USB keyboard. I will attach a photo of the hub I used to this post for greater clarity.
    I really hope this helps.

    You're welcome.
Unless you get better suggestions here, and having ruled out other possibilities and concluded that software is the cause of your problem, my only remaining suggestion is that you try reinstalling and re-updating the software that you believe is damaged or causing the problem.
