ITunes 8.11, Vista, File Associations and such

The latest version of iTunes appears to have messed up Vista, the desktop icons, and more. Today I got the message about iTunes needing to upgrade, I believe it is 8.1.1 or whatever the latest is (since it is today (Apr 11, 2009).
After running iTunes, I find that ALL of my desktop icons are showing the iTunes icon (for a wide variety of programs), double-clicking them does not work. Right clicking the icons, selecting "Properties", I see that the "Target" is correct -- in that it points to the correct file. However, the icon is wrong. If I change the icon from this screen, it shows on the shortcut properties dialog, but when I click "OK" nothing changes. Double-clicking does nothing. This includes icons in my Quick Launch Tray.
In addition, I have a program set up to run on startup (Trillian) that now runs iTunes instead. When I restart the computer I do not get Trillian, I get iTunes.
Something strange has happened to the registry, and the ONLY program I updated or installed was the iTunes update. This is very confusing and very frustrating ... I have no clue what to change to make everything work properly again.

Hmm. I posted a response that doesn't seem to be here.
The developers at Apple need to work on this issue. If I uninstall iTunes and reboot all is well.
However, it means I don't have iTunes installed on my computer. I have tried with versions 8.1.051 and 8.0.2.20 and neither of those worked either -- both of them came up with the icons going funky on me, and not working correctly.
There is something messed up in the registry, I would almost guarantee ... this is a serious issue and the QA team at Apple as well as the R&D team really need to get on this ASAP.

  • Problem in file association and main-class in JWS

    Hello , all
I have a problem in JWS with file association and main-class. I have a java application that has two entry classes, one is appmain.class that is required to launch from web, and the other is player.class that is required to launch when user double-click the .abc extension file.
In JWS 5.0+, there is a association element in JNLP syntax that can be used to make the file association with .abc extension. But how can I declare the main-class in JNLP file?
If I declare the application-desc element as <application-desc main-class="player">, the player.class will be launched from web. But if I declare it as <application-desc main-class="appmain">, the .abc extension wil be associated to the appmain.class.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thank you for your kindly help.

One way is to define a third main that refers
to the other two, as appropriate. E.G. if the
web based main does not include -open as
    its arguments, it is easy.class WebStartSpringboard {
/** Call web based main unless args include -open. */
      public static void main(String[] args) {
        if (args[0].equals("-open") ) {
          OpenFileBasedClass.main(args);
        } else {
          WebBasedClass.main(args);
}Other measures might be taken for a situation
where the web based version does include a
    -open argument.

  • Quicktime grabs Vista file associations in Internet Explorer (TIFF etc.)

    Hi all,
I have a problem with Quicktime 7.6 and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows Vista - maybe someone here knows a fix? I've tried everything I could think of ... to no avail... Many thanks in advance for any hints!
    Trouble is:
After installing iTunes 8.1.1 including QuickTime, whenever opening a TIF image in Internet Explorer 8, QuickTime will display it. I don't want that, I need to set a different application to open TIF files or to have Internet Explorer ask me whether I want the file displayed or download it.
This is extremely annoying, since our HTTP scan server (HP) sends its files as TIF directly to the browser, so there is now link to the file to right-click on and chose "save as". Before installing iTunes/QuickTime, Internet Explorer asked me where I wanted to have the file saved - now it just displays the image using the QuickTime plugin and I can't save it anymore.
I tried to right-click the image in the QuickTime display, it tells me I would need to buy QT Pro to save a copy.
I opened QuickTime's options and disabled TIF and TIFF both in file types and in MIME types.
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime.
I right-clicked on a TIF file on the harddisk, chose properties and changed the program with which to open the file (first Acrobat, than tried Windows image viewer, then Photoshop...).
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime. (When I open a TIF from a folder on the harddisk, Vista opens it in the program I specified - but any TIF within IE8 is still displayed with QuickTime).
I opened Vista's control panel and set the standards for file type TIF/TIFF to a different programm.
Result: no change, within IE8 any TIF image is still displayed using the QT plugin.
I used Internet Explorer's Add-On settings to disable the QuickTime plugin.
Result: any TIF image is displayed as a red X, it doesn't ask me what to do with it or where to save it.
    What can I do?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Best wishes
    Frank

I used this link for tiff http://www.nrl.navy.mil/content.php?P=IMAGES
QT was opening the tiff files. When going into the QT control panel Browser>Mime settings>Images-Still image files I was able to uncheck tiff, which held. I was also able to uncheck all the file types under File Types tab(Images-Still image files) in the QT control panel. However the preference would not hold. Went into Start>Set Program Access and Defaults that also was of no help.
The only way I was able to get QT to release the tiff's from the website I posted was to go into the Folder Options control panel for File Types and change the tif & tiff from QT picture viewer to windows picture and fax viewer.
So not sure why the QT control panel will not respond, there are other file types in the Folder options control panel on this computer other than tiff's that are still associated to QT, but didn't try changing them, perhaps that needs to be done?
Good post I didn't realize this before reading your post, if I come across anything further I'll post back.

  • QT stole all my file associations and won't give them back

Once I installed the latest iTunes, Quicktime decided to steal all my file associations. Now anytime I click on an mp3 on a website, I get that annoying QuickTime plugin that takes up the entire page when I used to get a Windows Media Player plugin that either opened as a new instance, or in the left media column.
I went into the MIME and File Types settings for Quicktime and removed everything, I also went into my Windows File Types and made sure mp3s were set to play with Windows Media Player. None of this helped.
How can I get my file associations back?
    Thanks.

Try altering the tag for the ringtone: right-click on a ringtone in iTunes and select Get Info, go to the Info tab and make a slight change to the Artist, tap OK and try syncing again.  If it transfers to your phone do the same for the others.

  • Since the upgrade to lightroom CC I have lost my file associations and cannot restore it

Can anyone advise how to restore my LR file associations. I had to uninstall lightroom 5 as it always opened instaed of the new version. Now I cannot associate JPG or NEF files with lightroom, it will not link to it despite selecting the executable.

I don't have LR associated with any type of file extension. Not one file type extension has Lightroom associated with it and I have both LR 5 and 6 installed.
All image type files are associated with Photoshop or the Windows image viewer (whatever MS calls it), not LR.
Actually LR is not for Opening image file unless you have already imported them into the catalog. I guess if you wanted to you could associate those file types to LR so when they are double clicked the Import dialog window open so you can import them into LR. But AFAIK that isn't the norm. YMMV

  • Vista file associations can't find .ai files

I can't double click on an Illustrator CS4 .ai file and have it open in Windows. When I go to the Set Associations screen an tab down to .ai files it shows Adobe Illustrator Artwork 14.0 as the associated file. When I click on the "Change Program" tab I get a screen that does not show Adobe Illustrator CS4 as on of the choices for assoicating. If I "Browse" and find the Illustrator .exe application and click on it, it does not show up in the list of choices for associating.
Very frustrating.... Same is true of InDesign .indd files but I was able to change the association for Photoshop CS4 files with no problem.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks - Joe Rivlin

You misunderstood me. If e.g. you use WinRar, you have an Shell integration page in the preferences of the program. Likewise, many virus scanners have similar options. I know that mine has. Disabling these will reduce the number associated with the <any file> file types and may free up slots to get your AI relations working again. Likewise, dig into the Advanced options of your file associations. You may have a ton of print, edit, open etc. actions defined there that compete with each other, effectively disabling anything. As I said - if it's messed up all too heavily and all else fails, simply scrap the existing associations and create new ones. When you do, use CCcleaner to delete the then orphaned registry entries...

  • Default file associations and RTF (rich text format)

I use pop3 email accounts for work.
I receive daily emails with .rtf (rich text format) file attachments.
When I open the emails, the attachments are listed.
I touch to open and QuickOffice loads to open them.
According to the QuickOffice website, QuickOffice does not support rtf files.. and it certainly does error on them. Why does QuickOffice open at all? I do not need any of its functions except the one it doesn’t have.
I have installed at present, this list of file managers.
    Android’s default file manager
    OI File Manager
    Astro file manager
    Cool reader
All of these applications support rtf files.
How do I set the file association for rtf files to an application which supports them?
    Thanks for reading.

  • Auto File Associations and product activation

    Hello
There are two things I want to address in an Office 2013 deployment.

  • Gnome: mime types, file associations and defaults.list

I installed the new Gnome 2.8 during the weekend and now my file type associations is completely bloated. The mime system is intact - Nautilus recognises files properly. However, Nautilus doesn't know which applications to open a specific file with. I have read other posts and found useful information, but not the solution.
This post in FedoraForum gave me a hint to what's causing the problem:
    http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread … post127530
It seems that the file defaults.list is missing from /usr/share/mime/applications. Apparently this file contains the associations  between applications and mime types. I have not be able to find out which package should provide this file or how to recreate it. Can anyone help - maybe provide the name of the package that provides this file?
    Thanks,

Yeah, I got tired of Evolution not knowing about opening *.docs in openoffice.  After several hours of research, the key is the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache,  /opt/gnome/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache, and the MimeType fields in the *.desktop files.  The mimeinfo.cache in /usr was empty and the /opt one had gthumb and other apps but no OO:
    [MIME Cache]
    application/x-gnome-stones=gnome-stones.desktop
    image/jpeg=gthumb.desktop
    application/postscript=ggv.desktop
    ...snip...
That's a lot of blather to say that the fix for Evolution/OpenOffice was to add the proper MimeType entry to /usr/share/applications/ooo645writer.desktop:
    MimeType=application/vnd.ms-word;application/msword
and then run "update-desktop-database".  Problem solved.
Another problem is that within Evolution it says an attached doc is a "application/msword" and not a "Microsoft Word Document".  Unfortunately this is because freedesktop.org decided to use application/vnd.ms-word instead of application/msword like the rest of the world.  If you check the vnd.ms-word entry in /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml it defines an alias msword but the new mime system doesn't appear to recognize aliases yet.  The solution I used was to rename the entry to msword.  Another possible solution might be to remove the msword alias from the vnd.ms-word entry and create a new msword entry based on the vnd.ms-word one.  Then run "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime".  Hope that made sense.
I think the defaults.list is part of the previous GNOME MIME setup cause I don't have one and I'm not experiencing any problems.  For other apps check for the associations in the mimeinfo.cache's and if missing add the MimeType's to the app's *.desktop.

  • File association and offline displaying of SVGs

Suddenly when I try to use Ff to view an SVG from a local folder it starts opening tabs over and over (not showing the SVG in any of them) and doesn’t stop till I close it. I have been using Ff to view local SVGs for ages and now I have this problem. I hate to have to unearth MSIE (which I never use) for this. Please help!

Did you create that entry in Tools > Options > Applications in response to an open with dialog?
The .svg file shouldn't need to have such an entry.
Firefox should handle them automatically just like normal .html and .xml files.
Did you try to delete mimeTypes.rdf in the Firefox Profile Folder to reset all download actions?

  • Launch.rtc file association and Windows 7

I have had 2 customers of mine now report not being able to get into my LiveMeeting sessions (via this link https://www.livemeeting.com/cc/topechelon/join?id=BBKE&role=attend ).
I remotely connect to their machine, and see that that are using Windows 7.  When they click the link, it prompts them to Open or Save launch.rtc, and when you click Open it starts to open the file with something like Adobe Reader.
So I go to the Default Programs for file assocations... there is an entry for .rtc-ms that has the LiveMeeting icon associated with it.  But right above it is .rtc and it show the "unknown" icon (as in it doesn't know what program to use for .rtc)
Again, two customers at different locations... both using Windows 7 and both trying to get into the same meeting.
    Please help...

Hello all, this seems to be an unanswered question that has stumped a lot of people.  Hopefully this will help solve the issue for others.  It worked for me.
    Browse to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.rtc and delete the
    “.rtc” key
    Browse to
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.rtc and delete “.rtc” key
Go to Control Panel and open
    Programs and Features
    Repair
    the
Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 install
Go to Control Panel and open
    Default Programs
Select the second item “Associate a file type or protocol with a program”
    Scroll to
“.rtc” and confirm that the Live Meeting Icon is present (orange color indicating that it is associated with the rtcrouter.dll file) and the
Current Default is pointing to “Microsoft Office Live Meeting Router”

  • ITunes Update Removed All File Associations in iTunes

This is ridiculous. I installed the latest iTunes update and when I opened iTunes, all of my music was gone. Did this happen to you?
I found a way to fix this problem. Your music should still be in MyDocuments/iTunes in individual folders for your artists. All you need to do is import the entire iTunes folder and it should work. This should also include your Podcasts.
What this won't do, however, is re-associate your purchases and downloads.

  • ITunes is not updating file names and locations since upgrading to 10.2.2.12

It saves the changes I make to the metadata, but the filenames themselves and the actual locations of the files are not changing.
Good example of this is changing a video file from Movie to TV Show. It does change the location within iTunes, but the file itself remains in the Movies folder, right where it was before.
This was working perfectly before upgrading earlier this morning to version 10.2.2.12.
I have double-checked and iTunes is still set to organize my library for me.
Any help would be appreciated, even if it's just to let me know that it's a known issue with this new version.
    I am running Windows 7 (64 bit).

If you organize your iTunes media folder yourself, DO NOT DO WHAT JonSS DID!.   It will move all your files to folders with the artists name on them instead of by album.  It fixed the video podcasts (and apparent other kinds of video files -  I haven't checked yet) being sent to their respective folders but totally borked my music file system.
This is fine for me and my iPod Touch, but, my wife has a non-Apple mp3 player and she likes to find music by artist+album. Now all the Compilation Albums are in multiple folders (i.e. The Animal House Sndtrk is not in one folder but in 11 different artist folders in the main Media folder).
This has happened in the past and I hope some overworked and undereducated (maybe overeducated and underworked is correct?) coder is feverishly trying to fix this.
I recommend a reinstall of 10.2.1 to keep control of your library yourself and have the newly downloaded video files assigned to their proper folders.  (btw, if your looking for your recently d/l'd video Podcasts, they are in the Downloads folder as psuedo tmp.mp4 files).  This seems to be a problem with just the video files.  I don't use iTunes to watch my video files. I either watch them on my Touch or on Windows Media Center on my HTPC. So having each show/podcast in it's respective folder is important to keep track of them.
Luckily, I recently backed up my iTunes Media Folder for a re-install and will use it when I reinstall 10.2.1 (I have approximately 16,000 music files from my CD collection, OS-level organization is quite important)
Fix one thing...break 3 other things...ahh, the life of a "cut & paste" coder...I knew it well...
Now I have to find a different RSS-based video Podcast downloader...any suggestions?

  • File association and the Kind column in Finder. Bug?

Some time ago I installed BBEdit - an application for editing web source code such as JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
Post install, I noted that Finder showed in the Kind column "BBEdit text document". This was entirely correct and as expected.
I have now uninstalled BBEdit (decided not to buy it) as follows:-
    Moved the application to Trash
    Removed ~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit
    Removed ~/Library/Preferences/com.barebones.bbedit.*
I then noticed that the Kind column in Finder still indicated "BBEdit text document" for files with .js, .css and .html extensions.
This seemed wrong (obviously) so I tried this...
Right-click on a .js file and hold Option key to reveal "Always open with". I selected Dashcode.
Now the situation is quite bizarre...
When I double-click any .js file to open it, Dashcode runs. That is a good thing.
However, the Finder Kind column still indicates "BBEdit text document".
    Why?

How about if you right click (control click) in the column header area to open the drop down menu.  Can you get back to the default KInd.
if Kind is checked, uncheck it. Relaunch Finder. >ForceQuit>Finder>Relaunch
Then go back to the drop down and recheck your column for  Kind.
