ITunes 8.2: Browser Artist column changed

Apple seems to have made a change in iTunes 8.2 that I don't like. In the Browser, the artist field seems to now show the "album artist" instead of the "artist".
This has the side effect that "Compilations" shows there as a navigable artist, which pretty much renders the whole shebang useless.
Anyone know how I can return it to showing (song, not album) Artists?

Hmm there are no options when you click on that column, unless I'm missing something. I'm not referring to the song list view, I'm referring to the navigator, which is above it, if you have it selected to show.
The navigator is useless now; it's supposed to show you all the songs/albums by an artist, but now it only shows you all the songs you have that are not from a compilation.

  • "Compilations" categ in "Artists" column in Itunes libry: How I get rid of?

I'm currently loading my cd library into itunes. In the "artists" column, it has, without asking me if I wanted it, created a category called "Compilations". Any artist whose CD it decides is a compilation is put in there, and not listed as an artist in the column itself.
So any artist where I've only got their Greatest Hits disk, I won't see their name when I look at "Artists". I have to dig into this pointless "compilations" category in order to see the rest of the list of the artists whose music I might want to access.
Worse, it's decided that any film soundtrack, and most classical cds (especially any opera recording) are "compilations", even though they are not.
The "compilations" category in the "Artists" column is a pain, and I want rid of it so that all "artists" simply appear in the "artists" column.
    Anybody able to advise?

Go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced and uncheck the box "Group Compilations when browsing"

  • Artist column iTunes doesn't show artists

    Hi
Ive been trying to fix this problem for months and now ive had enough about it.
All my music is *set as a complication* and therefor I can IGNORE that on my iPod classic so I can use the artist menu to see all artists separately.
The cover flow also works exellent on the iPod because everything is a complication.
In my iTunes it's different. I can't "ignore" the complication setting which means that the Artist column is not showing the artists separately like on the ipod.
Also in iTunes, the cover flow shows all covers separately for all songs.
(the cover flow isn't so important to me in iTunes, but still why doesn't it show 1 same cover for all songs from the same album? everything is set as a complication)
The internet is spread with problems like these.
Can anybody please tell me how to do it. No websites please...
    I already thank everybody

iTunes changed the location of the *Group compilations when browsing* option a few builds ago from the Preferences dialog box to the View menu. Select the column browser view and then open the *View > Column Browser* menu and experiment with the options to *Group Compilations* and *Use Album Artists* until you get the display you want.
If you sort the library as *Album by Album* artist then Cover Flow should resolve into a single image for each album, but if you sort on, say Artist, then you get the artists listed in order and a new cover each time the album changes, so you may well get repeats.
I know you said no websites, but if you want to be able to organise your albums without making everything into compilations, take a look at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp - I've posted the same information on here before, but I can update that site whereas I can't update my older posts here.

  • Why is iTunes Podcast Artist Column Incorrectly Showing the Channel Title?

I've noticed that recently for iTunes Podcasts that I create, when viewing the podcast in iTunes, the Artist column (for each podcast media record) is not showing the correct <itunes:author> field for that item. Instead it is showing the <title> field for the whole category. I thought my XML may have been incorrect, but it never used to be a problem for and it still looks correct. Further more, I noticed that other podcasts on itunes had this same problem (all). Why isn't it showing the "author" in the artist column anymore? Is this a glitch in the new version of itunes?

No, I think it's actually using the "channel <title>" node, not the owner <itunes:name> field you mentioned. Mine are different, and it's picking up that field for sure.
    The iTunes Specs:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/whatson/podcasts/specs.html
require this tag for the channel:
    <title>
This is the top level title of the whole podcast, and it should not be used for the "author" of the individual podcast "items". See the image on that page which describes which fields are displayed where:
    http://images.apple.com/itunes/whatson/podcasts/images/itunespodcast_overlay2007 1029.jpg
It explicitly says that "item <itunes:author>" should show up in the column. Whereas "channel <title>" is used for the top channel title ONLY. They are not following their own specs. And if you aren't including that "channel <title>" field, then you aren't following the specs either I'm glad it works, but I'm not quite ready to abandon the specs, because they are going to find the glitch in iTunes and fix it soon.
I would like them to fix what is very obviously a problem in a recent release of iTunes. Maybe if we all report the problem, they'll pay attention:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser/
Just pick the "best" category and write a report to them.

  • Enable artist overview, cover flow on ipod AND artist column in iTunes...

    Greetingz
    Here's the problem:
I want to enable the artist column in iTunes for all my music.
I can already do this with genres and albums, and its so convenient.
However the artist column is showing only "collections" instead of -+for example Abba, Aerosmith, ACDC, ..+-
This is because I have put everything on Complication "Yes"
and on my ipod classic complication in the music menu is 'clicked' off. Why? so the ipod doesn't show all covers separately in the cover flow. its all good on the ipod; I can also get a list of all artists and genres. But in iTunes the artist column only gives one category and thats "complications" not like abba aerosmith acdc you name it. How can I get this right for both the ipod (remember also the cover flow as well as the artists must work correctly) AND iTunes? I find this very complicated and one of the only things I am unable to figer out.
Many many thanks to all who help!

"Compilation" means that the album is one of those Time-Life type "Disco Hits" or "50's Greats" CDs that aren't by one artist. I would suggest either turning off compilations for everything or going through each song and filling in the "Album Artist" field.

  • Artists showing up as Various artists when I sync music with my iPhone 4S, even though in iTunes the song tags have been changed

My artists are showing up as Various artists when I sync music with my iPhone 4S, even though in iTunes the song tags have been changed.
    Am I missing something?
For example, I have 3 songs that are part of a compilation CD. I've change them to no longer being part of a compilation, and changes all of the tags of Arist and Album artist to the artists name, however they still show up as 'Various Artists' on my iPhone.
    Any ideas?

You may find you need to remove the songs and then add them back again.

  • Connecting my ipad to itunes, how to get the columns there

    hi all!
I'm sure its been discussed before but couldnt find the topic with a quick search, so I'll start a new one, sorry for that.
My problem is quite simple, when I connect my ipad mini on itunes, I can't show the columns browser (artist, album etc). the line to put it is just grey. Is there any way to activate it? It's just way easier to browse my music with it!
    thx in advance pple!

    Hi Jamalzoal,
Dose your computer have the most recent iTunes on it? When you connect the iPad 2 to your computer what happens? dose iTunes tell you the iPad need to be restored?
p.s. you post this question in the Apple Remote Desktop community. You would probable have gotten more an fast responses if you posted this in the iPad community.

  • ITunes won't alphabetize artists correctly

So this is a brand new computer. Downloaded iTunes and started transferring my songs from my other computer onto this one via a 4 GB flash drive. I did the first batch (artists A-C) and the artists are not alphabetized correctly. Yes, I've clicked the "artists" column at the top...no dice grandma. For example, the list begins with some "A" artists near the top, but some other "A" artists are at the bottom of the list.
Here's something interesting: "coheed and cambria" was sandwiched somewhere between some "A" artists and "b" artists. So I changed their band name to something random, like "ZZ Top." I hit the 'artist' column to realphabetize it, and it STAYED exactly where it was before. What the ****?

And no, there's no weird spaces or anything before any of the artist names. And they're all organized just fine on my other computer. And in the file on Windows Explorer, they are all alphabetized correctly. It's only when it's transferred to iTunes that it's all jacked up. I even tried adding each artist's folder individually and it puts it in the exact same jacked up order every time.

  • How to manually insert artist photos in the artist column?

I wanted to know specifically how to customize artist photos in the artist section of the iPod / iPhone, etc. As you can see, it shows a corresponding album to that artist, but I wanted to put a photo of the artist there like they have in the iTunes Radio. Mainly cause it would look nice, and I have several artist that doesn't have photos anyway. There was a thread that someone put custom photos on their column using iFunbox. I have it, but don't know how the person did it.
    Any help?

    I'm installing that currently.
This was the step by step tutorial that I got. Could you simplify / have any knowledge of it?
    1. Need ifunbox or other soft to download/upload to phone
    2. Download /private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/iTunes/MediaLibrary.sqlitedb
    3. Prepare images and put them to /private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/iTunes/Artwork/Original/00 folder
(use your own naming, for example "deeppurple.jpg")
    4. Use Sqlite3 db editor edit 2 tables
    4.1 artwork
add line for each artist with parameters id,4,name jpg,4. Where jpg name like u decide in 3
         For example deeppurple,4,00/deeppurple.jpg,4
    4.2 album_artist
find line with artist name in album_artist column
change value in album_artist_token to id value, for example deeppurple
    5. put edited MediaLibrary.sqlitedb back
    6. delete MediaLibrary.db-shm and MediaLibrary.db-wal files
    7. restart Music.app and enjoy.
ps if u can change image - PLS find and delete files from /private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/iTunes/Artwork/Caches folder

  • Browser - artists appearing on compilations no longer in browser

A lot of my music collection is made up of compilations. I have always found the browser a quick and efficient way to locate the e songs in my collection by particular artists that may be spread over a number of compilations.
Since last updating itunes artists who only appear on compilations are no longer listed in the artist box of the browser. Is there a way to restore the compilation artists to the browser box? The alternative way to locate them (sifting through the entire song list alphabetically by artist is very cumbersome especially with 20,000 plus tunes saved).
    Help appreciated.
    D.

In iTunes 8 it seems as though in the browser, I'd have to select "All Genres" under Genre, and then select Compilations under the Artist column. Do you have this option?
    CG
PS - If you go into your Preferences, on the Advanced tab, you can UNcheck "Group Compilations while Browsing."

  • Album art in the Artist column is missing

I have an album art problem. For one artist in my library, Foo Fighters, the album art is missing in the left artist column. I have deleted and reinstalled album art for each and every album as well as delete and reinstall all albums/sings. Nothing helps. BUT, when choose all songs and change the Album Artist Name to "Foo Fighters#" it shows. But when I change it back again its gone. What is going on and how can I fix it?

    Hi there mwetterstrand,
It looks like the Album art doesnt seem to show in the Artist column as expected. I would use these steps on the missing artwork in the Artists column:
Add artwork to songs and other items
Retrieve album artwork from the iTunes Store for songs in your library: Control-click the songs and choose Get Album Artwork.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • Song purchases do not show up in the artist column but they do show up in the song column. What gives?

When you purchase songs, I have several artists that do not appear in the artist column. The songs appear in the song column, but they are not grouped in the artist column. What gives?

Make sure these tracks are not marked as part of a compilation in iTunes from under the Info tab of the Get Info window that can be accessed by right->clicking on a track.

  • How do you hide the 'Album by Artist' column

I recently bought a brand new MBP and the default iTunes layout is slightly different to how it was on my previous MB. When in songs view, in the main music window, i used to have 3 columns- Name, Artist, Album but on my new MBP, there are 2 additional columns on the far left. One is named 'Album by Artist' and seems to be a sorting option and also displayes album artowrk. The other has no title, but seems to be displaying the tack number in that particular album.
I have tried editing the view options, but there isn't an option for the 'Album by Artist' column to take it off. There is a 'Track Number' option, but it refers to a seperate track number column. Does anyone know how to get rid of these? The 'Album by Artist' one is the most annoying as it takes up a lot of room.
Any help would be massively appreciated!

I've got the Album by Artist and a seperate album column though..only wanted Name | Artist | Album | Time if possible.
This is what I have at the moment...
So you do not want to view the  first column with artwork?
iTunes menu View > View options.
    Uncheck Show artwork.
I'd like as close to the layout of iTunes 10 as possible if that makes sense..
Considering I don't know how you had it layed out in iTunes 10...
My iTunes 10 looks exacly like you have above.

  • Album by Artist column

When I change to list view I still get an empty 'Album by Artist' column on the left side that I cannot turn off or move. I have already deselected all column selections but it will not go away. This must be a bug, right? Or am I doing something wrong? Selecting the second view option works and the album art is displayed in that column, but in list view it should not be there.

I have the same issue and I was about to make a new post about it.
Premising that we're talking about the Music section, I have exactly same symptoms, which are:
    1. in *song list* view (first) and *cover flow* view (fourth), there's an extra column which belongs to *album list* (second) that allows to view artwork artist/album-artist and album rating.
    2. In song list and cover flow it just remains blank, and cannot be hided or moved around
    3. If I change the size of the artwork from the dropdown menu, the width of the column gets hugely wide.
    4. All new playlists have the same issue.
And also a bonus: there's another column with a number, it basically gives a number to each track. the thing is, in *album list* view it takes the number from the track number, in *song list* and *cover flow* it just counts from 1 to whatever amount your library (or current search result's array) is consisting of.
