ITunes 8.2 crashing on Vista?

I installed iTunes 8.2 a couple of days ago, and it crashed on first startup while it was updating the library (or whatever it was doing: I forget exactly what). I started it again, and it seemed to run ok.
Just now I decided to back up the entire library, but it crashes again, right at the end of the "Checking Backup Items" phase. Error message (from Vista) is at the bottom of this post.
I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes to see if that would help, but I'm hesitant to do so in case I lose the entire library. Is it safe to do so?
Otherwise, any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hi. Thanks for the prompt reply.
Yes, you're quite right, one of my videos was the cause of the problem (and, since I'm well aware what Quicktime does, I should have thought of that myself!).
It wasn't that hard to find the culprit, actually. I found that I got the crash even if I just tried to copy the file from iTunes into a new folder (using right-click -> copy). A simple binary search found the offender in short order.
I'd be happy to forward the file to Apple, although it's slightly over 300M in size. If that's ok, let me know how to go about it.
It's possible, of course, that the file may be corrupted, although it seems to play ok using mplayer under Linux (if that helps any).
Thanks again,
.....Ron

  • ITunes 7.1 crashes in Vista

The new version of iTunes is crashing sooner and more often on my computer than the old version. Does anyone know when iTunes is going to be Vista-compatible?

I'm having similar problems. When I start iTunes 7.1 up it tries to update my music library and crashes about 80% through the task, with Vista closing it down and leaving errors on my RAID 0 array - no damage but one or both volumes are marked with errors. This is worse then it's behaviour under 7.0.2 when it just couldn't cope with new videos being added (resulting in similar RAID 0 errors). Note every other application works fine on my PC, even the ones Adobe claims aren't Vista compatible!
If I delete my music library and get iTunes to rebuild it then it seems to work OK however I'm not sure how to rebuild the iPod games library. When I try to sync my iPod it threatens to wipe it clean and then resync. Since I've paid for the games on my iPod I'm not keen to do that! My games are sitting in a folder on my PC. Any ideas how to add then manually to iTunes?

  • ITUNES v8 keeps CRASHING on Vista, I've tried EVERYTHING

I never had these problems with any of the Version 7...this is only started happening with Version 8. I can play my music but I cannot launch the Podcast function..the second I click on it, I get the "Itunes has stopped working" message from Windows and it shuts down immediately.
I have tried everything recommended. Deleted all Apple files, reloaded multiple times. I have tried deleting just the Quicktime and reloading independantly, no luck there either.
I tried loading a new version with no links to any music or podcasts, basically a blank version, and even that one crashes the second I click on "Podcast"
Any ideas??? Why is this version such a disaster with Vista?? I see multiple other problems listed on this blog too. When is Apple going to fix this mess?

    Hi
I had the same problem. same codes ect on vista.
It did my head in, so after 5 days I have Itunes working again.
So hope this will help some one out there.
I have got around this by:-
firstly save the itunes xml library, so its safe this has all the information about your folders files and where songs are so is important.
now totally remove itunes and quick player. I used uninstall function.
now your computer is itunes free,
I used a usb memory stick and loaded Itunes743 setup on to it.
now loaded up the 7.4.3 itunes. NOT version 8!!
now go in to FILE, IMPORT and load you old Itunes library.
and bingo working itunes is working.
    thanks Morris

    Hey joshuafromisr,
If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:

    or here:

  • In other words is any way bring back old data itunes kept in PC(was vista- crashed- now win7)...

    As stated briefly:
    My PC crashed
I have all files but cannot run os vista was
to run itunes in a new win7 pc with prior data: I must connect ipad and synchr (but this says This device (IPAD 1) synchr with another Library go and delete data and replace with current lib?)
or exist other way use old data(Old hdd) of itunes in old PC to new itunes new pc??? so avoid deletion...
in other words is any way bring back old data itunes kept in PC(was vista->crashed->now win7)...?

If you want to transfer to a new computer here is the way-
    1. Without connecting your iPad to your new computer -
    A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
    B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
    C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
    2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
    A) Start iTunes (if it does not do so automatically).
    B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
    C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
    D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
    E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
    F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.

  • ITunes 7.4.1.2 causes fatal crash on Vista

Hi, just installed a new version 7.4.1.2 and while itunes is creating the library Vista crashes and reboots. Not even a blue screen. What could be the problem?
    Thanks, Oliver

Same thing happened to me. Did the 7.4 update last night. Seemed to go ok. The update wanted a restart to finish the update. But then Vista wouldn't come back up. Finally after several restart attempts Vista went into a recover mode and fixed itself, which I would imagine took off the update and put files back the way they were before the update. All fine again. Tonight I get the 7.4 update popup again. No way! Not until I hear something about this. Scared the living out of me last night. Hope somebody knows something about this.

  • ITunes has Stopped Working in Vista

Browsing this forum, I see quite a few people are having trouble with the newest version of iTunes.
Ever since I upgraded to iTunes 7.5 a few weeks ago on my 32-bit Vista Ultimate, the program will no longer run. When I try to start iTunes, I get a message saying "iTunes has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem." Also, whenever I start up Windows, I get a similar message saying "iTunesHelper Module has stopped working."
When I tell Windows to check online for a solution, it just gives me a page telling me there's a newer version of iTunes, but it is the newest version that I'm trying to run.
    Any thoughts?

This solution has worked on one of my 4 computers so I can't guarantee but it might be worth a try.
Uninstall Itunes and Quicktime. Reboot your computer
    Empty out the recycle bin
Use Search to locate any and all files and folders that reference itunes or quick time. Of course do not touch your music folder.
Delete all these references to itunes and quick time.
    Reboot.
Download a standalone version of Quick time and install.
Download Itunes (I used version 7.4.1 that I obtained from Oldapps.com.)
Once this was done I was able to run itunes on my laptop. I did upgrade to 7.5 but I could not get my sons nano 8GB to sync so I reverted back to 7.4.1 and it works just fine.
I have yet to get itunes working on My wifes vista laptop and it quit working on my XP desktop some time ago (I have never used it and wouldn't care except my son just bought the nano) Itunes a version prior to 7.4 was running on my sons laptop until he upgrade to 7.5 when he bought the nano, just last Friday, and 7.5 totally borked things up. Aside note is that his hard drive crashed a day later, but I don't think that had anything to do with it.
If you read through this board you will find that itunes and windows are not getting along well at all. If you have a "new" ipod be it nano, classic or what ever I beleive you must use version 7.4 or newer. It seems to me that if Apple really wants floks to buy these things they should be sure the primary piece of software is stable and works!

  • Itunes continues to crash and I get the Data Execution Prevention error from Windows and it shuts down. How do I fix my Itunes?? This startes happening after the Itunes update

Itunes continues to crash and I get a Data Execution Prevention error.

    Vista 64 bit
Many thanks. If you're still not launching after your complete uninstall/reinstall, we'll go searching for old QuickTime componentry stashed in non-standard locations on the PC.
First we'll need to change some view settings.
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "SysWOW64" folder.
What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • I just updated iTunes, since it crashes as soon as I opened it ..... any help?

I just updated iTunes, since it crashes as soon as I opened it ..... any help?

Let's try a repair install of iTunes first.
Restart the PC. If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair". If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", click "Change" and then click "Repair".
Can you launch your iTunes now?

  • Updated iTunes to newest version, and once iTunes opened, it crashes immediately.  Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program numerous times.  Also had a hard time getting a network connection over the weekend (I knew my connection was fine)

Updated iTunes to the newest version but have been unable to use it since.  Once it opens and tries to connect to the iTunes store it crashes and asks me to close the program and report the problem.  In the Windows information center, it tells me to update iTunes to the newest version to fix the problem; when I do and I tell it to repair the problem it goes through the motions, but the program doesn't change, it still doesn't work.  I have tried uninstalling and resinstalling the program numerous times from the weekend until now to no avail.  After the update was completed, it had a difficult time making a network connection; I knew that the connection was fine, as I was on the internet and receiving e-mail at the same time.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Fix for iTunes 11.4 crashing on Synch

I upgraded my iPad Air to iOS 8 and iTunes to 11.4.x.  During the synching of apps, iTunes crashed.  After some research, I found that the issue is related to the iOS 8 with iTunes 11.4.x PLUS:
I back up to a computer not the cloud and the all the files and folders on the computer are redistributed to a network server.
To resolve the synch dysfunction, I uninstalled from my computer iTunes 11.4, Apple Application Support, Software Update, Mobile Device and Bonjour.  I then reboot the computer and installed an older version of iTunes 11.03.0.54 (not so easy to find).  Reboot again.  Connected iPad to computer and iTunes opened and synched without issue.
Previously, I had uninstalled iTunes and the associated applications from my computer and then reinstalled 11.4.x without success.  The bug has to do with the combination of IOS 8, iTunes 11.4.x and the storage of iTunes files on a drive other than a local drive.

    Hello ofsoykan,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, iTunes in Windows crashes unexpectedly. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
