ITunes 8 a non-starter

I've seen elsewhere in several threads that folks are having trouble with iTunes 8-- my case is similar but it seems there are two, potentially separate, problems. Others have noted something about crashes or hangs when some artwork conversion occurs. I presume this to mean that on YOUR machine the main iTunes window actually appears onscreen before it hangs.
In my case I click the icon in the dock and it hops up and down twice and then-- nothing. Even when I try to Force Quit the application (where it is listed as Not Responding) it will not shut down and I end up having to restart my Mac. In the threads detailing the 'artwork conversion crashes/hangs' I've seen others note that they don't even get that far, but there hasn't seem to be any response or workaround posted for those of us experiencing this problem.
I deleted iTunes 8 from my Applications directory, emptied the trash, downloaded and re-installed the app again and I still get the same hanging failure. This is really frustrating! I can't sync my phone, any of my iPods, or even listen to music.

I have had huge problems since upgrading to iTune 8 (as well as the new Quicktime which I installed simultaneously which cause a runaway log file - but that's a different topic)! I have a new iPod Touch (16gb) and I've been moving files onto by opening iTunes in Safe Mode. This is NOT a fix, it's a band-aid at best!! Whenever I try to open iTunes (not in safe mode), I get a message saying "Processing Album Artwork" and the name of a Podcast which I have completely removed from my iTunes Library in the Finder. Even in safe mode, I can't view my Podcasts without it freezing (by freezing I mean a never-ending pinwheel and "Application Not Responding") before I can even switch it to List View. Frankly, at this point, I'd trash all of my Podcasts just to be able to use iTunes - I never have time to listen to them anyway - and any really interesting ones I will just download again... I'm much more interested in keeping my music, video (movies, tv shows), and Touch apps. I can't cancel the "Processing Album Artwork" process - I just get a pinwheel and can't even click the little x in that "processing" window (which is in front and I can't get behind), and the App is instantly "Not Responding" - I have to force quit out of it *every time*. When I first installed the update, I was getting errors with the Genius "feature" too - but was able to disable it in Safe Mode (don't care about the Genius thing either!).
So I'm really not sure how to fix this problem (obviously, lol). It seems like I need to rebuild my library so that it doesn't read that darn podcast that doesn't even exist anymore and try to Process Artwork for it - can anyone point me to a good way of doing that? I have my entire iTunes library on my external hard-drive in case that matters (I'm down to 20GB on my main drive with almost no user files on it). Having now read that some people had their external drives killed while trying to use iTunes 8, I'm now really, really nervous! That is my only external drive and it has ALL my personal files on it, not just my iTunes library - if I lose that drive I will be really screwed (seriously, I will probably start crying - this would create a huge hardship for me!)
I will follow the boards here, but if anyone has a solution and wants to help a damsel in distress - I'd greatly appreciate it... Thanks!

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps youshouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

what can recover if deleted all?
    pdfs eBooks are recoverable?

The first step of syncing with iTunes is iTunes making a backup. Restore from that backup using the instructions in this article. Your iPad will be like it was when the backup was made.
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
The backup does not included synced media like apps. music and synced photos.
If necessary you can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Do that before restoring from backup

If you have followed the standard Apple troubleshooting processes (see user guide )
probably a trip to the local Apple Store Genius bar is called for before warranty runs out

    1) I have multiple accounts at the iTunes store and none are now associated with my purchases...I think because passwords have been associated with various id’s and I can’t log in and access those purchases.  I want to get back to being able to use one id and password and be able to access those purchases.
    2) When I upgraded my iPhone 3gs, to the latest version 5.0.1 (9A405), is when I noticed that i couldn’t update my applications.  There are two names/accounts on the phone and prior to the update there was just the one.  I have tried entering every conceivable password that I have ever used and get the incorrect password error every time. The apps on the iPhone are apparently associated with several/different accounts.  I just want to get everything back to the way it was.  One id and one password with purchases associated with just one account that can be updated on my computer as well as my iPhone.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium X64 - iTunes 10.5 - Not Starting

Thanks in advancer for any help...
Has anyone had any problem witrh the new version of iTunes for Windows 7 Home Premium X64?
I updated in the normal fasion and then iTunes refused to start. So I uninstalled all traces of Apple software, restarted, downloaded a fresh copy of iTunes for Windows X64 and installed it. Again I restarted my PC and tried to start iTunes. The process starts and uses 20% of my CPU power but then nothing. The process stops and nothing happens.
I've just got my very first piece of Apple kit (iPhone 4S) and I'm trying to get some music on it but I'm having big problems. Can anyone help me get iTunes working so I don't have to take my iPhone back the the shop and continue on with my Android line of devices.
    Bobby

My problem with AppleMobileDeviceService taking up 25% of my CPU had nothing to do with Apple.
I ran ProcessMonitor to see what the service was doing. I noticed that my anti virus software was denying the service access to the registry.
That information lead me to search for a problem on the PC Tools website. Where I found this:
    http://www.pctools.com/kb/article/security-software-itunes-is-not-working-correc tly-with-pc-tools-security-program-installed-323.html
Once I upgraded to the latest version of PC Tools Spyware Doctor and rebooted.  The AppleMobileDeviceService no longer took 25% of my CPU. Also I am able to connect to the iTunes Store without problem.
I recommend all of you still having problems to check your anti-virus software.
Please Apple accept my apology for blindly blaming you.

Although not illegal, Apple discourages a user from modifying the iPhone OS in any manner, including "jailbreaking".  Apple feels so strongly about this that discussing methods to assist a user trying to either jailbreak or "unjailbreak" an iPhone are prohibited.

iPod classic hard drive needle sometimes skips (Red X). When it doesn't and seems to power on normally, I start to restore it in Itunes and then it starts to skip again with the Red X on the screen.  One time I was able to run the disk utility in time and reformat the hard drive, but the red x ended up appearing again and the hard drive started skipping again.
Is there anything I can do besides get a new hard drive?
P.S. I have also tried the banging on palm/floor trick and it hasn't worked yet for me.

There nothing we can suggest to save a bad iPod hardisk, except to try some 3rd Party software to try repair the Hardisk.

For the missing Artists on your iPod, make sure their tracks in iTunes are not marked as "Part of a compilation" in iTunes. You can do this by highlighting the track, right->clicking on them and choosing "Get Info" from the shortcut menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Info tab and make sure there is NO tick mark next to this option in the lower right hand corner. Lastly, sync the updated changes to your iPod.

  • ITunes/Quicktime will not start.

iTunes/Quicktime will not start. Nor will anything quicktime dependant start. (Like Adobe Go Live) I recently reformated one of my Windows PCs and reinstalled m$ windows xp pro. I begain installing nessacary software and when I was done with iTunes/Quicktime (Why the heck is it now bundled?) it would not start. Could it be a codec conflict problem? I also tried reinstalling iTunes/Quciktime and nothing changed...
    Any comments would be appreciated.

    hi trackmanxs!
then i got the new quicktime and i am gettin error -1316 and -1603....someone please help
here's what we'll try first with that one.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
next use the QuickTime component of the complete uninstall instructions in the following document as a guide to a manual removal of leftover QuickTime program files and folders.
Trouble installing iPod, iTunes, or QuickTime software in Windows
once we've got all the existing QuickTime scraped away, let's try another careful standalone QT 7.1 reinstall.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer
if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

  • ITunes locks up my Start Menu

Has anyone ever run into this? I have iTunes on three machines - my home PC, my work PC, and a laptop. I use an external hard drive to hold my library and all audio files so I can listen to whatever I want any time. The last week or so, on my work PC only (the other two do not do this), when I click the iTunes icon on my Start menu, it freezes the menu in place on my screen for about a minute. Eventually the menu disappears and iTunes starts.
I don't know what this is about or why it just started. When I check task manager my CPU usage is fairly high (50% or more) but not enough that I'd expect problems. And also, nothing is frozen except the Start menu and my taskbar - I can switch to other applications easily, which you would not expect if it was a CPU or memory problem. However, even when I switch the Start menu appears in front of them, which is very annoying.
For what it's worth, I am on iTunes 7.7.1.11. I have kept this version on all three machines because I got tired of upgrading them all every time a minor update came out. I've had no issues with this version on the whole until now, and I continue not having issues on my laptop or home PC.

Did your work's IT dept change something on your PC?
A lot of places map the user document folders out to network drives, and that could certainly slow things down for iTunes while it makes the connections.
