ITunes 8 + Airport hiccups

While I'm grateful I haven't experienced the BSOD errors other Windows users have experienced, I have found that immediately after I installed iTunes 8, any music I play wirelessly through my Airport Express will periodically drop out for a second.
Once a minute or so is annoying, but once every 5-10 seconds makes iTunes unusable.
I have both an Airport Extreme base station and an Airport Express behind the stereo. iTunes is up to date, as is the firmware of the Airports.
If anyone else has encountered this problem and/or has a possible solution, I'd appreciate hearing it.

  • ITunes/Airport Utility Windows cannot connect to Airport Express

I really hope someone can help me with this since I have spent 2 days trying to get my new Airport Express to stream music with no luck yet.
I have a wireless network using Netgear WGR614 with WPA security settings. The AE has V6.3 firmware update and I used the Airport Admin 4.2 to set it up. I tried all the recommendations here and connected the AE to the router LAN port using ethernet cable and did a factory default reset. I then configured it to join my existing wireless network providing the WPA details.
That is when the problem starts. After successfully updating and rebooting the AE shows solid green LED. However, using Airport Admin to connect fails intermittently with error -6753 asking me to check my network settings even though they are fine. If I try a few more times, it connects and I am able to enter and modify settings. When doing another update, it again fails with error -6753, but a few retries later, it does go through. Note that all this time, the ethernet cable is still connected to the AE even though it is setup to connect to my wireless network.
Now, I unplug and relocate my AE near my stereo - it starts up fine and shows solid green light. My router "attached devices" page indicates that the device is connected with the DHCP ip address of 192.168.0.3. However, when I now try to use Airport Admin, it ALWAYS gives me the connection error -6753. The AE shows up in iTunes, but when I connect to it, it just hangs and after a minute or so, just gives up and goes back to the "Computer" speaker.
I tried to do a ping on the ip address, and it gives me "Request timed out". I thought maybe it is my laptop interfering so I did ensure that I turned off ALL firewalls, but the problem still remains.
So in short, AE seems to be joined and connected to my existing wireless network (green light), but neither Airport Admin nor iTunes nor ping utility can even communicate with it; and it seems to be due to the error -6753. I have tried pretty much every advise regarding connecting via wired etc. and nothing seems to work. This is not a wireless interference issue too, because the error also appears when connected via cable.
    Any help really appreciated.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the response. Here is an update:
I tried to connect to the AE from another windows laptop...and it worked. So it seems that it is only my laptop that cannot connect to the AE. The only difference is that I used my laptop to initially connect to the network created by the AE, and after that I could never get it to connect.
Interestingly, when I did manage to get into the AE and check its log, here is what I find...

The administrative access denied is pointing to my laptop, whereas the connection accepted was the other laptop from which everything works. So it seems that the AE is specifically not allowing my laptop to talk to it! Given that my AE is being connected in Client mode, there are no settings I can access to see why it has singled my laptop out.
    Any help appreciated.

  • Macbook Pro / iTunes / Airport Express MISERY!!

Yes, life used to be good. I got a new Macbook Pro to replace my PB Ti, got all my CDs loaded, got an airport express, began streaming, YES, life was good. Always careful about software, used just mainsteam apps, repaired permissions, etc, always careful.....
    Then, iTunes 7.0 was released........
Tunes dropout, useless, so so so so disappointed.
How do I convert back to previous version? Should I dump Apple, buy a PC?
All this wonderful music, no way to hear....
    APPLE? ***? APPLE?

It seems iTunes 7 uses IPv6 to stream to AirTunes.
We have a similar problem here.
We think that if the hardware you have inbetween your PC and AirTunes (e.g. your wireless router or an ethernet hub/switch) doesn't support IPv6, then you're stuffed. iTunes 7 will SEE your AirTunes but can't stream to it.
We have spent money on a new router with IPv6. When it arrives, we'll plug it in and see what happens. We'll report back here.
Things to try: If your PC/Mac has a wireless card, it ought to connect directly to AirTunes once it has associated itself with your wireless network, so, Wireless -> Wireless should always work. You may find that if you alter AirTunes so it creates a network rather is a client to an existing one this will provide a temporary fix. Of course, then you can't use the old wireless networ to surf the net etc. The problem seems to be if you're using a hardwired machine (Ethernet) or network (some hardwired link or router somewhere between you and AirTunes) and the network hardware doesn't support IPv6

  • ITune-Airport Express and Apple remote

My sound system (Quad) is hookup to my Airport Express. How can I set the apple remote to low or rise the sound from iTune, instead of using the mouse or the trackpad?
    Thanks

CentFois, Welcome to the discussion area!
The Apple Remote has absolutely no control over the AirPort Express (AX).
If you are asking if the Apple Remote can control the volume in iTunes on your Mac, you should ask in the iTunes question.

  • Itunes - airport express - remote speaker not compatible?

Airport Express unit (AX) connects to my network and verified to be connected to the network just fine...but on itunes (v. 7.4.2.4) on my desktop (Dell Dim E510 with wireless, Windows XP, Linksys router WRT350N with AX for airtunes)...when I switch speaker to the AX/stereo unit, comes back with message - "the remote speaker xxx is not compatible with this version of itunes"... I've battled this issue for a long time -- any idea what is the problem?

OK I got it working again. I'm not sure exactly what did the trick, but I'd recommend the following:
    1. Repair your wireless modem connection via your taskbar (rick-click on the Wireless Network Connection, Repair)
    2. Start itunes while the Airport Express Setup Assistant is running
    3. Restart your computer
    4. Keep trying, after 2 days it's working again (???)

  • ITunes & Airport express

Hi, Wondering if anyone can help
I was using iTunes and sending wirelessly to my airport exrpess but now all of a sudden I get an error message when I try to connect. It says: The remote speaker (my name) is currently being used by someone else. Please select another speaker from the menu at the bottom of the iTunes window
Well I was using it on my laptop and then switched to my desktop but I closed the connection on the laptop and went to my base station for internet
but now both the desktop and laptop are giving me the same message so I hit the reset on the airport express and now I have the generic apple network 023a41 which shows up at the bottom of iTunes but I still get the same message when I try to access it

    Donald,
I don't have an easy answer for you .

  • Airport Express occasionally doesn't show up in iTunes/Airport Utility

    Hello,
I have a network with an Airport Extreme N connected to a cable modem, and an Airport Express connected to my home stereo.
In trying to connect to the Airport Express with my Macbook Pro's iTunes, I am encountering problems seeing the speakers all the time- if I restart the computer, it usually shows up, but if I wake my computer up from sleep, it doesn't see it.
Also, when I use the Aiport Utility, I can only sometimes get the Airport Express to show up. Again, restarting the computer seems to convince it to work, but no luck when going from sleep.
Any tips on how to solve this frustration?

I was wondering if you figured out what was going on with the AX? I have the same problem, after putting teh computer to sleep the AX cannot be detected by the network or by the computer.

  • Itunes, airport express playing through a stereo system

    Hi,
I am playing my itunes through airport express to my stereo. Anyone have any ideas as to why it is only playing through one speaker on my stereo?
    Thanks

Leads into the stereo from the Airport express not in securely.

  • Itunes-Airport Express problem

I have just puchased an AirPort Express. I  have connected it to my current network so I can use airplay with Itunes to play music to my stereo. I have 2 MacBook laptops. One of them see the speakers and can play music but the other one cannot. The second mac is using Itunes 11.01.(and has all my music on it) I know you can't use 2 computers to simulataneously send music to the speakers but even when Itunes is not running on the mac that works, the other one still cant see the speakers. I have gone into the Itunes preferences to select  'allow itunes audio control from remote speakers' The window also says 'itunes is not paired with any remotes' and the 'forget all remotes' button is greyed out. I cant seem to get past this. Restarting Itunes, the mac and the Airport Express have made no difference.
    Any ideas?

After loading the latest update to iTunes, my remote speakers via the Airport Express stopped working. I have now found two ways to break my remote connection and two ways to get it working again.
    1) Load any software that seriously messes with the TCP/IP stack. In my case, it was loading the latest version of VMWare that tore down all the connections and rebuilt them.
Solution: Uninstall iTunes, Bonjour, and anything with Apple as the publisher and then reinstall. Uneligent, but effective. iTunes (et., al.) must be caching some deep dark settings that don't agree after this type of event. So the reinstall seems to clear this out.
    2) Update to the latest major release of iTunes.
Solution: Go to windows firewall ( C:\Windows\system32\WF.exe ) and turn it off. Chances are good that iTunes will start playing remotely. Leaving your firewall off is asking for trouble (particularly on a windows computer) so go down the list and find all the itunes entries and delete them. Then make sure the firewall is configured to ask you to athenticate when a new program wants to communicate. Restart the firewall. Close and restart iTunes. You should get a message saying that iTunes want s to communicate and tell it to always allow this.
Dear Apple: Can we please have a more meaningful error message or better yet log some application events with things like : firewall blocked connection.

  • ITunes + AirPort Express: from mediocre to unacceptable

Gah. Well, this is new. I thought I'd worked around my problems getting iTunes to stream songs from my home music server to stereos in other rooms by hardwiring the client to said stereos -- thereby sacrificing half the functionality that I thought I'd paid for when I bought all those AirPort Express base stations, but whatever. But now, for no apparent reason and with no changes to my hardware or software setup, even that's not working.
The symptoms are that certain songs simply will not play when accessed via the client. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason with respect to which songs consistently work and which consistently don't. iTunes throws up a "Opening URL/Reading Stream..." dialog box and then...nothing. Well, sometimes it will eventually start playing the song halfway through (and adjust the time accordingly and incorrectly in the track list), but mostly nothing. The dreaded exclamation-mark icon shows up next to the song title, and I sigh and copy the song to my local drive over the network, because that's apparently the only way I'm going to get to hear it. The songs play fine from the server and via netTunes (though netTunes's interface is so slow that I've mostly given up on it).
This is ridiculous. Both computers and both base stations are literally within two rooms of each other, and everything's running the latest software. It just does not seem as though this sort of thing should be an insurmountable challenge for Apple, especially if they're going to charge this much money for it. Maybe the idea is to convince me to forget about this whole pie-in-the-sky music server idea completely and buy one of those shiny new dual-core laptops whose hard drive is actually big enough to store 15,000+ songs locally along with the rest of my stuff, but at this point, I really can't imagine tossing any more money at this company.

Since my initial report, I have tried to solve the problem by (among other things) backing up my songs from the Finder, wiping the library completely in iTunes, checking permissions and everything else I could think of, and reimporting the songs. Still no luck. It is incredibly frustrating, because I spent a fair amount of money for functionality that I would not think would be rocket science, and it's not working. No, worse: it's working half the time and half not, with no apparent rhyme or reason between the two.
I just don't get it. Why do all songs play fine from the server, but others simply refuse to do so from the client that is one room away? What should I look for in the songs that consistently work vs. the songs that consistently don't, especially given that most of them were imported from CDs in exactly the same manner?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Airport Express not Appearing in iTunes/Airport Admin Utility

After upgrading to iTunes 7, Airtunes did not work, so I followed the tips on the forum discussions, on MacOSXHints.com (resetting the IPv6 preference) and so on.
However, now iTunes will not recognise the base station at all. I think this is connected to the fact that the base station will also not appear on the Airport Admin Utility list. BUT... I am able to access the Airport Express by entering its IP address and password via the "Other" button. This has allowed me to check the AEx configuration settings, reset the hardware, re-upload the firmware, and even re-configure the AEx from scratch.
I am able to use the Internet through the AEx, and the network appears in my airport menu bar list, so I can select it and other wireless networks in range... It seems that iTunes and Airport Admin Utility just cannot see it. I have tried every combination of 'soft reset', 'hard reset' of the Aex, trashing of various airport admin utility and itunes preferences, and restarting software and the whole computer but this problem still persists.
Any ideas?? iTunes 7 is great, but I want my Airtunes back!!
    Thanks in advance - Danny

you may be suffering from wireless interference.
download iStumbler and note the channels other networks in the vicinity are broadcasting on, then change the channel your network is using as far away as possible from those.

  • ITunes AirPort Express home theatre???

I'm plannig to buy a home theatre and I would like to know if any of you know which port the theatre receiver has to have in order to successfully connect to the AirPort Express to play iTunes music on it, so I can chose a model which has that specific port. Also, what cable is needed for that connection?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks Duane for your reply. However, my dilemma was not about the cable and port on AirPort Express side. I have it currently connected to iPod Hi-Fi via optical cable and it works fine. My question is related to purchase of home theatre and connection with AirPort Express. I don't know which models of home theatre have the right port (and what is the name of it - eg. Panasonic 'music port' or Sony 'digital media port') and what cable do I need to connect them. I don't know if the existing optical cable is right for these ports on home theatre or I have to get some other cable. The staff in white goods stores in Serbia are terribly uninformed about this matter, especially connectivity with Apple.

  • Drive spindown causes problem with iTunes/Airport

    Here's my setup:
    Mac OS 10.5.8
    Airport Extreme N Base Station
    Airport Express N
    Latest iTunes
USB external HD connected to AEBS via USB hub
    Here's my problem:
I have the USB HD connected as a shared drive to the AEBS. The HD contains my iTunes folder and all of the music I have in the iTunes playlist. It appears that the HD spins down while not in constant use. So, while I am listening to iTunes via the Airport Express, the music cuts out, but iTunes shows that its still playing. I believe this cut out or pause in sound is caused by the spin down of the HD. When I stop the play button in Itunes, then hit play to start playing, the music comes back on.
    This is probably confusing.
    This is really annoying.
This problem doesn't happen when I'm listening to the radio.
    Does anyone know what's happening?
    Is it the spin down?
    How do I prevent this?

    Seagate.
I downloaded a applescript "Keep Drive Spinning" for the downloads section.
    I'll see if that helps.

  • Itunes + Airport Express = No Video

    Hi All,
When I select a music video on itunes and try and play the audio through my hifi via my Airport Express the videos stop playing! The audio carries on fine.
When I deselect the Airpot Express and play just on the Mac speakers the video plays, if I play on both also no video.
    Does anyone have any ideas??
