ITunes 8 continually starts up without any user interaction

This started right around when I updated to iTunes 8, and got an iPod nano 4th generation, 16 GB. I'd previously used a 3rd generation iPod nano, 8 GB and did not have this problem. iTunes seems to have gotten into the habit of randomly starting up whenever it feels like it. I've not told it to run at startup, and there is no startup entry for it, either. My iPod is not set to automatically open iTunes when it is connected, either. I've tried restoring my iPod, reinstalling my iTunes, restoring my library, disabling/changing the settings of my antivirus software (NOD SmartSecurity 3.x), etc. I also tried enabling disk use for the iPod, but it didn't help.

If it only happens when the iPod is plugged in, I wonder if there is something wrong with the preference file and it is not picking up that you have unchecked the "Start iTunes when iPod..."
You could try deleting your preference files, this will cause new ones to be created with default values.

If you have another account on your PC you could check if the problem occurs there. Also have you tried setting the iPod to manual update if it is autosync .

Amazing! I'm a dance instructor and am doing the exact same thing as you - and not seeing what I need on my iPad Air ... I can't believe there has been no reply on this! I also can't believe there isn't an easy way of seeing track info in the iPad or iPhone but I've spent hours searching and am not finding anything

  • How can I backup my mac on a Time Capsule (connected with ethernet), without any user logged on the mac?

Time Machine by default does not run when no user is logged in, there's some way to let backups run without any user logged on the mac?
I need to backup 3 iMac connected through ethernet network to a Time Capsule.
    Some hint?

If you use eithernet for your main connection then just plug the TC bridged into the network.
If you use wireless for your internet connection then you can use the TC isolated from the network by ethernet.. but this is really only convenient on a desktop Mac.
The instructions I put in this thread with screenshots.. see near the bottom.

It is a bit tricky so if you have questions ask back here.
Just to say a USB for firewire external drive is faster and more reliable than a TC.. cheaper to buy as well.. although since you already have the TC that is not a concern.. but you can ebay the TC and buy a bigger and better external drive with the proceeds.

  • Upon opening Firefox, all tabs start connecting without any websites, the proccessing grey circle on each tab periodically turns green and back to grey.

When I start firefox the normal page doesn't open and instead the tabs start connecting and connecting without any website and the grey circle that each tab has turns green and then grey and the process repeats itself. And If I try to type an address I can't because upon pressing 'w', it tries to connect to what I don't know.

hello, it sounds like a theme or extension might be interfering here. please try launching firefox in safe mode once and see if the issue is occurring there too. in case it's working correctly, please go to firefox > addons > extensions and disable/remove any extension that look suspicious/you didn't install intentionally or that might interfere with the tab loading behaviour.

  • My iTunes just starts up without any input from me?

I can be working in other programs and iTunes just starts up by itself?  It does itt randomly and I can't set a pattern for it doing this.

I had this happen to me.  Twice.
My problem was that the external speaker wire had come loose from the computer speaker jack.  Confirm that your external speaker wire into your Mac is fully plugged in.  If it is not fully engaged into the jack, and the computer slightly wiggles (e.g., by typing on a keyboard), iTunes will start up.
    Just a thought. . .

  • ITunes pausing, playing, skipping tracks without any input.

About an hour ago, my iTunes began to pause, play and skip tracks without me doing anything at all. I made sure that i wasnt pressing ANY buttons and i even quit the app altogether. This did not help as it just reopened seconds later and began playing music again. How can i stop this from happening?

I just started having this very same problem. iTunes (9.1) will stop and start on its own. Sometimes I am listening to music while in another app, like in a browser or word processor, and it will pause itself every few minutes. It will be fine for a while, then it will pause, I start it again, and it pauses again and again. Other times it will just randomly start playing if was left paused.
The freakiest is when the app starts up by it self. I watched it Start up on its own 3 times in one hour. I think this is why my computer once woke up from sleep mode in the middle of the night.
It is like there is a ghost playing with my computer, or iTunes is possessed. I did several virus scans, and their was nothing. I also Ran Tech tool. Next I will work with Disk Utility, see if that finds anything.
The only thing that occurred about the same time was I started getting more spam in the email account that goes to my mac mail. These may be unrelated, but it is the only noticeable thing that has occurred around the same time.
This feels like some sort of Malware, Zombie computer situation, but I can't find much about Mac Malware evidence out there.

  • HT2534 how do i use itunes and the app store without any credit card or gift card?

i just got my iphone and i used to use itunes all the time before when downloading all songs were completly free, how do i use itunes and the app store to find free stuff to download without having to add a credit card or gift card with my account?

Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old

  • Mail preferences don't stick or are changed without any user actions

Apple Mail keeps changing the settings of my IMAP account. I set the Mailbox Behavior options to certain values, and then - after few days - the settings are changed. It typically happens with the settings used to enable/disable the storing of draft and sent messages on the server. It seems it is a quite common issue.
    Has anybody found a solution?

  • When I try to open any video or podcats in iTunes U, it closes itself without any error message

    What can I do ?

    Greetings;
I would suggest that you try syncing your iPad and updating your software (version 4.3.5 is the latest version). It's been my experience that updates resolve a number of odd behaviors with apps.  Hope this helps.  All the best...

  • Auto-install updates, with no user interaction?

Due to problems with malware, we can't really trust everyone to be logged on with administrator privileges all the time as it used to be with Windows 2000 and XP. Consequently the installed software can not be modified by staff anymore.
This doesn't affect Windows Updates since those can be configured to install automatically on a schedule without any user interaction or privilege elevation.
Java for Windows however does not detect when a logged in user does not have administrative rights, so it offers updates to everyone who logs on, including people who can not and will not ever be able to install the updates.
One "solution" is to turn off the update checking so that people aren't hassled by useless update notifications, but then this means Windows desktops will gradually fall further and further out of date, opening them up to attack by malware that exploits unpatched bugs in older Java versions.
The proper solution that I really want, is for Java to be capable of auto-update and self-install without any user interaction or privilege elevation at all. However so far I have not found a solution for this.
A hack may be possible using Windows group policy, the Windows Server task scheduler, and a java website screenscraper.
    Nightly:
    * Screenscrape Java.com for a newer client version
    * If new one is found, download, put in global read-access share
    * Using a database of machines known to be running Java, flag each candidate that's using an older version
    * Wake-on-LAN the machines needing the update
    * Schedule a remote install of the update with Administrative privileges
    * If update successful, clear flag for that machine in central database
    * shut down again for the night.
    OR
Java programmers could implement an auto-install mechanism of their own, that can run by itself without user interaction at system startup, shutdown, or on a timed schedule set by the administrator through registry entries (and therefore configurable via group policy applied to desktops).
    ==========
How are other network administrators handling managed business desktops that need periodic, automatic, and non-interactive Java updates?

We use Altiris Software Delivery solution to deploy our Java updates but you could also use similar solutions such as Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager.
The problem is that these are both options that cost money and require investment and training.
Altiris allows you to create a collection based on the text string held in the Add/Remove Programs list (as well as other fields) - so you can easily create a collection of computers that do not have the required version of Java.
You can then create a software delivery task to silently install Java with admin rights and target it towards the collection that needs updating.
The collection updates dynamically. As the computers get Java they drop out of the collection and are no longer targetted for upgrade. This used to work well for me - as I could update about 500 machines in about 2-3 days.
The problem is that the Java installer doesn't work consistently as you mentioned since JRE 6u25 - the installer doesn't always behave as expected and the switches to do silent installs keep changing. You also have a problem if you try to update Java and the person has their web browser open... Yes, I do my updates during working hours as well.
In a constantly changing environment in terms of security - you'd think Oracle would have sorted the deployment options out by now?

  • ITunes opens but without any text showing.  Drop down menus have text but not the app itself. I have a Mac Powerbook Pro running Windows XP under Boot Camp.

Running under Windows XP,  a few upgrades ago iTunes started opening without any text showing in the application.  Clicking on PLAY will play music but no text shows to indicate what's playing and no text to show music library. Drop down windows show text but not the app itself.
Subsequent upgrades and reinstalls have not corrected the problem, When I run under iOS (Snow Leopard), iTunes opens with text and runs correctly.
    Help!

Because I created FAT32 partition using Boot Camp tool few days ago I installed my custom copy of Windows XP with SP3, IE7 and WMP10 integrated using nLite (for WMP10 integration use RVM Integrator). I did not use Boot Camp tool this time - I just booted CD using Option key. Then I installed Boot Camp 2.0 drivers you can find on Mac Disk 1. After this I installed Boot Camp drivers 2.1 update. In Add or remove Programs I checked drivers - I uninstalled old drivers which call identical, but you can skip this. Everything works fine BTW it is better to format your partition to NTFS - you have much less disk errors, you do not waste time for disk errors scans during Windows startup, your data are much more safe. If you need NTFS write permissions use great tool Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX or open source NTFS driver.

  • Silent Flash player Autoupdate over internet without user interaction

Is it possible to set Flash Player to auto update without ever having any user interaction?  We don't have any internal application depending on flash player so I would like to install an version of flash update with auto update settings and forget it.
I did install 15.0.0.152 with settings:
    mms.cfg:
    AutoUpdateDisable=0
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=1
But it has updated to 15.0.0.167 instead of 15.0.0.189.   Does the autoupdate use always the latest version or does it install only critical updates?  Why did I get 167 and not 189 ?  I can see that the task launching the auto-update run every hour, with default settings, but no new updates are made, wheter my browser (IE) is running or not.

    Please do the following.
Open IE6, go to Tools and then Manage Add-ons.
Change the menu dropdown (on the left) to "All Addons", then scroll down to Adobe (if it's there) and then check the version number. The current version is 11.1.102.55 (See screenshot)
If it's not listed, or if it's a different version, download this uninstaller, but choose to Save it (doesn't matter where). Do not choose "Run". http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player_32bit.exe
After you save the file, close IE.
Run the uninstaller (even if Flash is not listed in Manage Add-ons) and then reboot.
Next, go to: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and when you see the prompt, choose "Run" to install it immediately. Oh, and uncheck any third party installation options like the Google Toolbar / McAfee. You can install those any time.
Go back to Manage Add-ons and confirm that 11.1.102.55 has been installed.

  • Dialog with no user interaction

    Hi all,
I would like to use the one button dialog that would just showing a message without requiring any user interaction.  With the dialog, I only want to display a message for the user. I want the program to continue running without needing user interaction.  I just want to let the user know that something happened.  I don't need to user to do anything.  How do I do that?
    Yik
Kudos and Accepted as Solution are welcome!
    Solved!

A more common approach is to use a "Status log" (just a string on the UI that gives the user some idea what is going on.)
Here is a construct I often use (place the control "Status" on the UI, Add a control to the referance to "Status" wire the Connector pane.)  This type of action engine (see Ben's excellant nugget) lets you send update messages to the user from anywhere in the application instance space without leaving pop-ups all over the screen.
And should you wish, you can add cases to Show, blink, unblink, highlight, move or Hide the indicator so it peeks out and dances

  • Itunes won't start up. Don't get any error messages.

I just installed the CD for Ipod/Itunes that came with my nano. When I plug the nano into the usb port, the "do not disconnect" display comes up and Itunes attempts to start. The Itunes user agreement pops up on the screen for a brief second, then goes away without initiating the program. If I double click on the Itunes icon, the same thing happens and I cannot get the program to open. When I try to open quick time, I get the same results.
My wife has used Itunes on and off for the past year on her RIO mp3 with no problems. I wonder if the napster and RIO manager programs are creating some sort of conflict. I do not want to delete them since my wife may need them for her RIO player.
I am very aggrevated that I cannot talk to a human to resolve this issue. I have called the "1 800" number several times and was told by a computer to "try back later". I wasn't even given the option to hold for a tech.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

when i click on it it gives me the hourglass for a couple of seconds then it goes away and itunes never opens.
