ITunes 8 Genius crashing iTunes

So I couldn't find a thread for this. I downloaded the update to iTunes 8 but everytime I try to "turn on" the Genius sidebar it crashes while sending the information to Apple. I get the error message "The iTunes application has unexpectedly quit....Rport or Reopen..."
Help please and thank you!

I'm having the same problem. Ever since I downloaded things started screwing up. First my entire library disappeared and then the next day iTunes wouldn't open for me at all. The iTunes icon bounces up and down and I get an error message that says, "The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (13026).

  • Genius crashes iTunes 8

After looking thru the discussions I don't see this one anywhere:
If the GENIUS is on, then whatever I try to do in iTunes 8 that involves creating a window CRASHES iTunes.
Once I turned OFF Genius iTunes works ok.
    PROBLEM HERE<<<<</div>
Now when I try to TURN ON Genius it CRASHES iTunes 8.
**I have NEVER USED GENIUS. Not signed in to it, not connected or anything**
Basically I select GENIUS from the playlists on the left and get the "What is Genius" screen and click the "Turn on Genius" button and after about 15 seconds iTunes crashes.
    HELP!
    John in Fairbanks, AK

Genius is a lovely feature, but it requires some URGENT attention... I found out that it crashes only at those times when iTunes is connecting to perform other tasks (i.e. downloading Podcasts; redirecting the user to a Store link, etc.) If iTunes wants to update Genius at the same time, it'll just flop out. Today it did so more than two times, so the application crash manager offered me to reset iTues's settings. I did so, then tried again. it flopped out once more, so, upon re-launch, I decided to cancel the Genius update. Then I let it finish all of the other store-related activities (updating four podcasts). After that, I forced a Genius update down its throat, and iTunes decided to go on with it this time. The funny thing is that this issue has been around ever since iTunes 8.0.0. We're now on 8.0.1, and still nothing's happened. I'd like Apple to solve this issue, as there's really no alternative to iTunes on the Mac, and I also happen to like iTunes the best even if you DO count in the other players that might exist... My library is really small, btw... Only 10GB in total (including AudioBooks, video's and podcasts) If I were to only mention the Music (Genius only sends whatever is in the Music section), it's only 7GB. I would really love this crash to get out of the app, as things like this remind me to Windows too much... Apart from this tiny issue, my iMac is really working PERFECTLY. Well, there's the infamous N73 Bluetooth issue, but that really seems to be on Nokia's side...

  • Trying to activate genius crashes itunes 10....help!

    Hi all,
I'm trying to activate genius- since I moved from pc to mac and re synced my ipod, I've never been able to use genius.
But every time I try - either from itunes or going through my account- I get to the terms and conditions, accept them- then I get the spinning rainbow of death....
I have my library on an external drive.....could it be this, or perhaps something to do with going from pc to mac?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Same thing...Win7 64 bit crashes.  I have deleted the "extras.itdb" and "Genius.itdb" files a few times...trying to get this going again...but it consistently crashes.  Using version 10.4.1 of itunes.

  • Genius crashing iTunes 8 - bad file?

I have a client who cannot activate the Genius feature in iTunes. After going through the sign-up procedure it begins to scan the iTunes database and then crashes at about halfway though the progress bar. The little wheel (chasing arrows) next to 'Genius' in the side bar hangs, then the entire OS crashes hard with only the cursor moving with a spinning wheel of death. Dock is dead, cannot force quit, the only way out is holding down the power button.
I assume this is a bad file, but there are no entries in any log files and the file names being scanned do not appear so I have no great way to troubleshoot this.
Are there any utilities that might scan your iTunes DB for errors? I realize the problem is likely data corruption on my client's machine but I don't seem to have any simple way of tracking down the source of the problem.

I'm having the same problem. Ever since I downloaded things started screwing up. First my entire library disappeared and then the next day iTunes wouldn't open for me at all. • Genius crashes on opening

MY genius never seem to load without crashing. I am on a recently bought macbook pro and did a migration of my old itunes library
    Any ideas?

I had this exact problem. It started off with itunes crashing on startup, after a while I deduced that it was due to Genius. I know this because I deleted the genius.itdb file and created a new one effectively reseting Genius and allowing iTunes to start up with Genius in the default "switched off" position.
For me, it happens when I switch Genius on and iTunes is sending the info about library to the server and I noticed it all started affter I added "Invaders Must Die" by The Prodigy to my library. Now I know that sounds a bit crazy, but to my complete dismay whilst reading on here yesterday I found another guy who had the same problem and had many phone calls with apple. Apple had told him that there was no problem with Genius, it was actually a code problem with the tracks (which he downloaded from iTunes!!!) one of which was an "Invaders Must Die" track. He had tracks by other artists which also had the same problem - Lily Allen's new song I think was one.
What is even weirder is that when I originally added "Omen" from the "Invaders Must Die" album before I bought the CD, it was a recording from the radio that I made in quicktime!!??? Now I can't see how that can effect genius in any way, I would have thought genius just wouldn't recognize it as the only info that the recording can have in common with official "Omen" download is the audio profile (and that would be slightly different due to it being an analogue recording and having radio chatter at the beginning). Anyway THAT is what messed up my iTunes. When I imported the official CD a few days after and deleted the radio recording the problem was still present. Very strange.
I have no clue to what is going on, all I know is that a great new feature of iTunes is now unavailable to me in iTunes, my iPod Touch and iPhone and I wish apple would B*dy well sort these problems out BEFORE releasing iTunes updates!!!
We need a bug fix to this infuriating problem!!!

  • Genius Crashes iPod Touch

Every time I try to use my Genius list on my iPod Touch it crashes out of the music player. Anyone know of issues with this?

Still no luck with this problem.
I still have not been able to get this to work. I have the 2nd generation touch and was hoping with the recent release of 3.1.2 that the problem would go away. But, Sadly it did not. I even tried resetting the touch again, turning on and off genius but the music player in the Touch crashes every single time on particular songs, while with others it creates the Genius list without any problems.
For Example on Itunes on my computer or the Apple TV. I can create a Genius playlist from a Johnny Cash song and it works every time. However, if I try to create a genius playlist on the Touch from any Johnny Cash song it crashes the music player every time.

  • In the iOS 6 apps genius crashed

When going to the apps icon on my 4S running iOS 6, I select the Genius tap and once switched the program crashes and goes back to my home page

This happens on my 4S too. At first I thought it was because I had Location Services for "Genius for Apps" turned off under Privacy. Enabling it and trying to tab Genius again crashes the AppStore app still.
Passbook and this problem is not a good start at all for iOS 6. I'm hoping these problems aren't happening on the iPhone 5 too...

  • Genius crashes App Store

When I Try to view the genius recommendations in the AppStore, the AppStore closes itself.

Same issue here also. 4s IOS 6

  • Genius crashes (restarts) ipod

I pulled a song up and hit the Genius icon to create a playlist but my ipod went blank for a couple seconds then went back to the home page icons???
Using first gen ipod touch with 3.0 update.

I reformatted ipod and that fixed the problem. make sure you have the most updated software installed.

  • Genius crashes

I set up Geneious under iOS 6 and it crashed after setup. It crashes each time I try to correct an item. So far that's all I tried. I also had the mysterious Apple.com login screen issue fixed by adding a proxy and removing same. I hope the later generation iPod stuff doesn't break my 4th generation iPod Touch. Genious crashes repeatedly. Can duplicate.

I'm in the same boat. I have a 4th Gen Ipod touch and I upgraded to ios6 earlier today. I then setup genious in the appstore. Since then it crashes after a few seconds each time I enter the genious section. I've found the new appstore prone to crashing under other circumstances too but this one is consistent.

  • ITunes 8.1.0.51 - Crash on "Update Genius"

Whenever I go to Update Genius, iTunes crashes. This only happens to me on the new version that has just been released.
I've turned it off for the meantime but any ideas? I read a post about it only affecting Dell computers. I have a COMPAQ Presario laptop and I still have the problem.
    Thank you.

  • ITunes crashes on Genius Update

I'm using iTunes 11.0.55 on Windows 8 64 Bit. I have a huge library consisting mostly of lossless DRM-less M4A files. The music is stored on a NAS.
After enabling Genius, while creating the initial Genius database, iTunes always crashes after about 15-20% / 10 minutes.
I tried the following to remedy the problem:
    - Do a clean uninstall & new install of iTunes
    - Creating a new library
The problem first happened after I (unsuccessfully) tried to share the library with a Macbook notebook. However I recreated and reinstalled iTunes since, so it really can't be the source of the problem.
    Thanks for help!

  • ITunes 8.1.1 Creating a Song in MP3

    Hello,
I recalled that in versions before 8.1, that I would be able to right-click on a song in iTunes and click "Create MP3 Version". In this version, it only shows "Create AAC version". The songs I download in AAC anyway, so I don't want to create the same version, I want to use an mp3 version. Has this been taken out? Can I create an MP3? Thanks.

    This seems really simple but,...
I was having the exact same problem of genius crashing on startup after I installed 8.1.1
I decided to restart my mac and voila! itunes works perfectly again.

  • My Macpro Intel Core Duo-running OS 10.6.8 has been crashing pretty much with everything I try to open.  I find the last resort will be to boot from Snow Leopard system disc. Has anyone experienced  this? I can only run Google Chrome.

In the last few days, it seems that my computer has all of a sudden caught a virus.  I have never had that happened to a computer, but I have surely heard about it.  I can't think of any other reason it is behaving like this.  I know that Macs have been pretty much impervious to viruses, but that was before they were the majority of users.
Anyway, what is happening is, my computer keeps crashing whenever I try to open a program, app, document, folder, file, etc.  I tried to boot from Drive Genius to establish the problem, but Drive Genius crashed too.  I know the last ditch effort (after cleaning and maintenance of disc verification and permissions and repairs, is to reboot from the system disc.
Before I go there I was hoping someone in the community would have a suggestion to help me avoid that ultimate last resort.  The tech support guy at Drive Genius told me that probably would have to be the way to go (as in reboot) and if that doesn't clear it up, it's repair time.
    Thank you for your consideration in advance;
    Lorain R

In the last few days, it seems that my computer has all of a sudden caught a virus.
As others have pointed out, this isn't malware. That should not be your first (or even fifty-first) thought when your Mac starts misbehaving. For more on this topic, see my Mac Malware Guide.
I know the last ditch effort (after cleaning and maintenance of disc verification and permissions and repairs, is to reboot from the system disc.
You mention "cleaning and maintenance." Have you been running utilities claiming to do those things? If so, you may be the victim of an overly-zealous cleaning job, which has removed important files and damaged your system.
If I'm understanding correctly, you're unable to open any applications at all... is that right? Do you have any backups? If you don't have backups, you're in a sticky situation, as it will be difficult to make backups in your current state, but you shouldn't try any kind of repairs without them. (Actually, you shouldn't do anything with your computer without backups, but this is especially important when something is going badly wrong.)
If you have backups, reboot from your Snow Leopard install disc. From there, first, repair the hard drive with Disk Utility. Once that is done, assuming repairs were successful, reinstall the system. You can simply reinstall it on top of your current system, and it will replace any damaged or lost system files with new copies. (You'll also need to update the system via Software Update after reinstalling.)
If you don't have backups, or if Disk Utility can't repair damage, or if the problem continues even after a reinstall, post back with those details.
