ITunes 8 - Loads Slow and Beach Balls

Ever since I started using iTunes 8 it loads real slow and beach balls as I go through my cover art. Anyone else have this issue?? I never had this problem with any other iTunes versions before.
Sidenote: The Genius is turn off.
Thanks.

Hi J|Spoon,
Try deleting the iTunes preference file. Quit iTunes. Locate this file: com.apple.iTunes.plist
It's here: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to your Desktop. Relaunch iTunes and see if you can access your cover art without iTunes freezing up. If that is the case, then drag that .plist file to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Preference files can become corrupted over time. Your Mac will create a new pref file for you.

If your iMac came with or is running Lion, startup holding either  the Command-R keys or the Option key and select the recovery partition and then use Disk Utility to repair the Macintosh HD.

  • Constant freezing and beach balls

I've skimmed other posts and seen that it usualy is a hard drive issue. My question, though, is that most of those posts seem to relate to people having chnaged the computer's original hard drive to something different. My computer's out of the box; haven't changed anything. It's been doing constant 5-45 second freezes and beach balls but when I brought it in to the genuis bar, they took it in - then gave it back to me exactly the same, because it passed every single test. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do? I bought it in November 2010 (Macbook Pro, 13"), and it's running worse than my housemate's older computer yet supposedly nothing is 'wrong' with it.

    Hi a,
It may be a lack of RAM. How much do you have?
One way to get an idea whether more RAM will help or not, is to check Page outs and Swap used. First, use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking this right after starting up isn’t likely to show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities > open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > near the bottom of the window click on System Memory. If Page outs is more that about 10% of Page ins, and/or Swap used is large, chances are good that adding RAM will help.

Sometimes a process can run amok and use more of the CPU than it should, potentially causing a slowdown and/or heat issues and/or other issues. To check on this, first use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking thisright after starting up may not show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities> open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > click on the column heading titled % CPU (this will update continuously, showing the percentage each process is using) > toward the bottom left of the window, click on CPU (this will show % Idle, which will also tell you how much of the CPU is being used).
It may also be due to a corrupt file or OS and reinstalling the OS could fix it.
It may also be due to certain applications which need updating.

  • ITunes 10 very slow and pegs processor

Ever since I upgraded to iTunes10 on my Windows 7 machine it has run like absolute garbage. It is ridicliously slow to do anything, right-clicking on a media item and choosing "Get Info" takes 10 minutes to open. *10 minutes!!*
Also one of my two processor cores is constantly pegged at 100% when the app is idle.
    Specs are a Core2Duo @ 2.7GHz, 8GB of RAM and Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
    Anyone else having this problem?

Sweet Jesus! I thought I was the only one suffering from Apple’s newest bloatware. I am to the point that I avoid adding content to my iPhone 4 because I simply do not have the time to wait for iTunes 10 to respond. I have many audiobooks and simply selecting (“clicking”) them requires me to wait ten seconds or so for the “tick” mark to display. This is simply an exercise in frustration. However, I am fully aware of the problem(s). Initially, iTunes was an agile application that allowed easy access and management of one’s music collection. Today, iTunes has become a bloated and intrusive application that lost the elements that made it great. No longer is it an application to quickly and efficiently manage ones music collection. Because of, I use Media Monkey for real music management. Then, I copy the music into iTunes. Notwithstanding, I do not need an application monitoring my music collection (Genius), nor do I need an application to build my social network. Generally, applications improve over time. However, with each version, iTunes becomes larger, slower, and even more invasive. Perhaps with iTunes 11, we may see some version of a relationship services provider. Subsequently, we will have an application to assist with making friends and strengthening our love life. I hope that somewhere between all these distractions, one may still be able to access and manage his or her music compilation. Until that arrives or returns, I will continue to use Media Monkey for heavy-duty music management such as mass tagging scripts, Meta data tagging editing, etc.

  • I WEB loads slow and grey

My iweb site which is hosted by .mac loads slow and grey on pc's. The grey goes away when loaded but I would rather not have that.
    Any suggestions?

You are thinking along the right track. The problem is the PNGs so try to eliminate the PNGs. Where do the PNGs come from? Well, it turns out that iWeb converts your JPG images into PNGs if you let iWeb do ANYTHING at all to the image. This includes resizing, rotating, framing, opacity changes, drop shadows, reflections...anything.
So what do you think the secret to minimizing PNGs is then??? Right....don't let iWeb do any of these image manipulations. Resize your images outside of iWeb if you can. Apply the effects that you like to your images before bringing them into iWeb. Etc, etc, etc...
I know it seems like this is what you'd expect iWeb to do for you, but unfortunately a side effect of letting iWeb take care of these things is PNG conversion.
Even after doing all that you can do, iWeb still has templated items that only exist as PNGs...so you will not be able to completely get rid of PNGs, but you can for a lot of things. That will help your site load faster in general and without those ugly grey boxes where YOUR images should be.

  • Itunes in external HD slow with beach ball on only certain songs

My itunes folder has always been in an external folder and ran smooth and quick when I would choose any random song. I have about 1500 songs yet only some songs will load with a 5 second delay and rolling beach ball. Is it the newer 8.2 version of itunes, is it the HD? Help.

I've just had exactly the same problem and it coincided with me moving my music folder to a new external hard drive (it was previously on another smaller drive and also upgrading from Panther (10.3.9) to Tiger (10.4.9). I don't think it's a drive problem and name length issue as during the 4 hours last night I was trying to sort this out by moving around folders, consolidating etc etc the actual albums that were getting lost were changing! At one point I transferred all of my music back to the internal drive (to rule out the external drive issue) and using the same library, pointed at the new folder and it all seemed to work OK. However, after a bit more fiddling I started to lose links to albums from there as well. I then looked at the iTunes Music Library.xml file and it seemed that those that were missing had paths to the other external drive still. No matter what I did, I could not get it to rebuild the library with all music in the same location. In the end I trashed the library and dragged all of the music back into iTunes again, which seems to be working OK at the moment - but all of my music is now on the internal drive taking up space whereas I really want it on the external drive again. In the process I have obviously lost all my playlists (why can't I just drag them back from my iPod as they're all on there, but I can't seem to be able to copy them back into iTunes which is a pain?).
I'm still going to try to get to music back onto the hard drive when I get some more time and have noticed in another thread that some people actually have the library on their exetral drive as well, whereas mine has always been in the iTunes folder on the internal drive. How to I move it to the external drive as well - just pick up and drop? Would this help?
I notice that everyone with this problem has OS 10.4.9 - is this just a coincidence? Did your problems coincide with the update as well?

  • Spotlight indexing drive and beach balls in Itunes after Power Outage.

Hi, My Mac Pro is hooked up to a battery backup. Last night we had a wind and rain storm and the power went out. The mac stayed on about 10 minutes before it shut down. The power went back on the next morning. When I put my Mac Pro on spotlight began to re-index my second internal drive. It took about 10 minutes to complete. I assumed that it had already indexed. When I plugged my Iphone into my Mac to charge, itunes opened and I kept getting beach balls until the Iphone synced. I never had this before. I opened disk utility and performed a repair permissions. Should I be concerned? Thanks

  • Slow youtube videos and beach ball spinning appears

    Hi,
I noticed that since Friday May 7, my youtube videos are very slow to load and buffers a lot and also i see a spinning rainbow wheel everytime i change window or tab. Before Friday, my browsing was sooo smooth, youtube videos load instantly and no buffer. I have OSx 10.6.3, latest version of safari and i didnt do anything or install anything to my laptop lately. I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of flash player but still the same slow buffering. Hope you guys can help me coz its so annoying for me already. TIA.
    Melin

    Ok...
How much free disk space on the hard drive?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
also i see a spinning rainbow wheel everytime i change window or tab.
    So it's not just YouTube...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If nothing above helps, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
    Relaunch Safari.

  • 10.4.7 Runs Slow, Spinning Beach Ball, "kass" takes over system

To the helpful frequenters of this forum:
Since installing Tiger and updating to 10.4.7 recently, I have experienced some major system slow downs on my computer. I am running a Titanium Powerbook G4 with 512MB RAM and 12GB free (from a 60GB hard drive).
My problems seem to center on Mail 2 app, which runs very slowly when accessing the IMAP server (a problem I never experienced with Mail 1 in the days of Panther). However, it extends to other applications: when launching iTunes and Safari, I often get a spinning beach ball and a 10-20 second hang that I never had before. Sometimes closing programs can take a long time. Force quit often does not respond, but for some reason pressing my laptop power key (as if to turn off the computer) helps to get things jump-started.
In my Activity Monitor, there is a Process called "kass" that is eating up anywhere from 20-30% of my processor. I think that this is connected to some sort of Key Access software that might have been installed on my computer for my college access, but I am not sure. Here are the details from Activity Monitor:

What I don't understand is why this is flaring up now, since the Key Access has always been there (on OS 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3 as I upgraded sequentially). Perhaps there is some sort of bad interaction with the 10.4.7 upgrade? I'm not really sure, but I was wondering how I would go about eliminating this hang up. It might be the source of so much slowing down on my computer!
    Thank you very much,
    Matthew

    Thanks for your help, everyone.
I seem to have solved the problem. The "kass" function was linked to KeyAccess, an app made by Sassafrass. This app was installed on my computer by my University so that I could use certain programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) while on the school network by obtaining a key through the school Internet connection. For some reason this process started to take over my computer once I upgraded to 10.4.7, so I just removed the application from my computer all together. Now the hang-ups in other programs, as well as the IMAP email seem to be back to their old speediness.
    Strange how these things work.

  • Yosemite slow, spinning beach ball at every action

    Description du problème :
Yosemite worked well for a month or more, until yesterday. I used for the first time a flight simulator downloaded from appstore (for 30 minutes), i don't even know why i did that. After that mbp was really hot. At next start mbp was very slow showing spinningball beach ball at every action (typing, opening folders). I deleted the app, but no improvement was shown. after that i noted there was 10.10.2 upgrade (i had 10.10.1). no improvement. I thought i had to clean a little bit so i downloaded adwaremedic, which found an adware and eliminated it. still no improvement. I finally looked up on support.apple and found plenty of people with this problem and followed intructions: deleted all third party and cleaning programs (fan control and flip4mac wont disappear from system preferences, how to be sure if i uninstalled them right?). anyway still no improvement.
I followed thisguide (Guide: How to solve Yosemite memory leaks and CPU usage) but i'm not sure if i managed to reset smc, as my left **** key doesn't work (i used the right one). still no improvement.
I was thinking about using clamxav (I've read it's the less invasive) to scan the mbp, is it a good idea or not?
might dropbox be a problem (after quitting it, if i try to delete it, it says it's not possible because plugins are in use!)
should i reinstall yosemite? if yes, is it necessary to do a backup?
    Please help me. thank you

  • ITunes Running Very Slow and other errors

    iMac, OSX 10.6.7, 2.66 GHZ, Intel Core 2Duo, 4GB Ram 1067 MHZ DDR3
    iTunes 10.2.2
Media is on 1TB USB attached WD Drive / Mac OS Extended.  Music Folder is 83GB
When I launch iTunes it tries to update Genius and gets the following error:
"We could not complete your iTunes store request. An unknown error occured (4002).  There was an error in the iTunes store.  Please try again later."
While viewing my music list in the iTunes browser if I select a star rating for a song, the spinning beach ball may spin for as long as a minute or longer.
If I launch iTunes and do nothing but play music, it "seems" to do ok.  If I do something like change a rating that then invokes the spinning ball, from
there on out everything is slow.  A change in songs can take a minute or more.
I was just able to download / purchase an album from iTunes store.  It was slow and the spinning ball was active for the entire download.  I was able to
use other applications but could not click anything in iTunes.
After the download I am able to switch between any and all songs in my library without any noticible lag.
I updated the rating on one of the new songs just purchased and it took a full 3 minutes for the spinning ball to stop.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Hard drive access and beach ball

Whenever I open Safari, I hear my hard drive being accessed constantly and get the beach ball. This slows down my computer and makes Safari almost useless. I wasn't sure what the casue of the beach ball was, so I posted something in the OSX forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1878540&tstart=0), but have since debugged it (and started using Firefox) and realized the porblem only happened when I used Safari.
This is a recent issue and I don't recall installing anything recently to cause a change. I have 2GB of RAM and 167GB available on my HD, so it shouldn't be a memory issue. I just cleared the cache and history, but it didn't seem to help.
Can anyone help me - I'd prefer to use an Apple product (Safari), but don't understand why it is failing me.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
It might be an idea to verify the hard drive with Disk Utility just to make sure the disk thrashing isn't a sign of some damage on the drive.
If the disk gets the all clear, try using Onyx and the settings shown on this page to see if it helps:

  • Why is my MacBook Pro slow? Beach ball

Boy, I was looking at a discussion of this from TODAY, about a half hour ago, and now can't find it.
"Why is my MacBook Pro slow?" brings "screen tearing issue" and other things not related to my problem.
I got and ran Easyfind, and got rid of MacKeeper.
What else do I need to do?
I have the beach ball way too often.
I just made an iMovie, but optimizing it for YouTube is impossible.  Boxes keep getting grayed out; complete hangup.
    Can easyfind help further?
    Thank you.

    Hi Tomo 2,
Kim Komando said get Sophos, so I did.  I see it found something called Bredo-K on Nov. 22.
It's now scanning my OVER 5 MILLION FILES.  Seriously, I don't think I need that many.
Right now about 50% of CPU idle,
    about 1.03 GB Ram free.
Sophos is using about 90% of whatever.
This scanning could take all weekend.  I need to get rid of some stuff.  Hard to know what, though.
    Thanks for any more ideas.

  • Brutally slow, spinning beach ball all the time

In the last few months my Intel iMac has slowed to a crawl, making it virtually unusable. The simplest task (opening a new window, dragging a folder, scrolling up or down in Safari) results in the spinning beach ball, often for minutes on end.
I have used Disk Utility to repair permissions, dragged the Fonts and Preferences files from my user Library to the desktop and restarted, and done an Archive and Install, with no improvement. I have 4GB of RAM and at least 10GB of free disk space. Activity Monitor doesn't snow any obvious problems, but often showed the balky programs in red with a "(not responding)" next to each.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated, as I have now resorted to using my wife's laptop as my computer is essentially useless.

With 4GB you should not be paging to disk, but it would not hurt to monitor pageout information. You can do this with *Activity Monitor*, top via Terminal, or if you have installed Xcode, the *vm_stat 60* command from a Terminal session.
What you are looking for is very high pageout activity. But again, with 4GB of memory that should not be an issue, unless you like to run some really memory intensive programs.
After I upgraded to Leopard, I had some slowness that I did not understand. It turned out that when running Tiger, I had a licensed copy of *Little Snitch* installed. However, I did not upgrade Little Snitch to a Leopard compatible version, when I installed Leopard. My problem turned out to be that I had NOT uninstalled the Tiger version of Little Snitch, and as a result its Tiger compatible bits were causing me slow downs when running Leopard.
I actually put up with this for awhile, until I decide to do some house cleaning on System PrefPanes I was no longer really using. That is when I accidentially discovered that my performance came back after getting rid of the Tiger version of Little Snitch.
That was my experience. And I did not really get Beachballs, but I did notice the slowness.
I am suggesting that maybe you have something installed on your system that is not on your Wife's system which is affecting your performance.

  • Project won't load! Spinning beach ball at opening screen.

So my project is multi-camera, has all externally synced audio, and about 45 min of footage in current timeline. When I created the project, and edited the elements within, all worked fine. But now when I try to reopen the project, I get the spinning beach ball hanging at the opening screen for hours. It just shows "loading project into timeline" forever. It just doesn't want to open. Anyone run into these problems before??
