Itunes 8 Really Slow on import

I have a large music collection (around 500gigs of high quality imports of LPs) and decided to start fresh with itunes 8 and create a new library. For days I thought it was hanging because when I would import even a fraction of the library it would just beachball (and would be reported as not responding)... anyway apparently I just wasn't patient enough. Import on itunes 8 seems to kick off much slower than itunes 7 so it takes a L O N G time for the import to even start to register.
My suggestion if you have a large library, quit everything else, import 1/4 of your library each night before you go to bed and then come back in the morning. If your are lucky your import will have started.
I have my music on an external drive btw. Don't know if that's a factor,

Not a solution, just wanted to add my 2 cents to the thread.
I also just built a Windows 7 64bit, core i7 920 system with 6gigs of ram and a 275GTX Graphics Card (ya i spent way to much much, but this is the top of the line system). It blows away the dual Xenon PowerMac I use at work, expect for one thing. iTunes.
I copied all my music from my old computer (about 120gigs). The copying went fine, only took like 45minutes, but iTunes itself runs just as bad as it did on my p4.
I know the issue is being caused by my huge music library, but guess what, all those songs are also indexed into windows media player and it runs great (instantly boots, and instantly responds) just like every other one of my programs (other than iTunes).
Every new release of iTunes it gets slower. considering 90% of the iTunes user-base is windows users, you think they would hire some decent programmers that would know how to optimize iTunes for large music libraries.
It is, without a doubt, an issue with iTunes and not your PCs, I just hope apple finally gives it's PRIMARY CUSTOMERS some love and fix there broken software. I went mac, I came back, but I do love my iPhone.

  • Itunes Really slow

My iTunes has started to get really really slow since the last update... i have over 12 000 songs over 70gb music and i am find my iTunes to go really click different playlist and scrolling up and down etc... anyone else having problems?

    Me too!
I have about 5000 songs in the library at the moment and that is just 1/2 if my entire collection.
I'm running on Athlon 64 3600 with 2GB ram and iTumes is on a striped SATA drive so it is NOT my hardware. No other program behaves like it.
When iTunes gets really 'busy' the taskmanager shows the CPU usage to 100% flat! It happens often and especially near the end of a song, it lasts for 10-20 secs. Its very frustrating since I cannot have iTunes running in the background if I am playing a game for example and I am forced to which to winamp.
Here is another example. As I am writing this, I have open
firefox, vmware, iTunes, creative labs mixer and windows explorer. Usage is between 0 and 5%. As soon as I start clicking on items in the iTunes list, effectively just highlighting items, iTunes' cpu usage jumps to between 15% and 30% until I stop clicking!!!! WHY???
If it was not for the clean interface and the need to have it for my iPod, I'd ditch it immediately.
    Please Please fix it!!!!!

  • Fix? iTunes slow to import CD, sync iPod, freezes on credits - Page Faults

    All,
Using Windows XP on a computer with 512 M of memory (lightning fast for it's time) I found that iTunes would import CDs at 0.3x to 0.7x, way too slow. iTunes resonded slugglishly to UI commands. And the credits screen (help - about iTunes) would freeze. Other applications do not have this problem. I found that iTunes memory management is sub optimal, at best. This causes iTunes to swap portions of its active program memory to the hard disk, slowing the interface by a factor of x1000.
How to verify if this is happening:
    1. Open task manager by RIGHT clicking on the date on the windows control bar
    2. Click on the "Process" tab, then from the menu select "View" then "Select columns . . "
    3. Make sure "CPU", ("handles" (i.e. open files), "threads" (i.e. parallel processes), and "page faults" are checked. Page faults are swap of memory to the hard disk.
    4. Open iTunes, use as usual (e.g. view credits)
    5. If iTunes becomes slow (right away in my case), watch for increasing page faults (what I experience) or excessive threads or handles.
In my case I'm getting over 1000 page hits a second when viewing credits. Someone didn't use good programming skills. (Not necessarily Apple, see below)
Note: I see, and expect, the CPU to go to 100% while importing CDs.
Please note: ** I do not use a mail client on this machine. ** I use a web based mail program and do not use MS outlook, and I don't want to. I only mention this because when I used iTunes, it locked up and I also received an error saying that I needed to setup my outlook client. Turning off automatic updates seems to have solved this lockup.
Since I run Word, excel, iExlorer, games, and windows media manager without error I'm having trouble understanding why iTunes uses so much system resources. Poor development tools? Virtual machine? Bug in complier library?
    Thigs to try to fix:
Since this is a memory issue: Try one or more of the following:
Minimize the screen when importing CD (screen calls are a hog)
This is what made the most improvement for me.
    Stop all other programs
This allowed me to stop the credits screen.
Try stopping / halting your antivirus programs
Try updating your Video card driver.
Note: I have a 'business' style video card. Aboslutly no bells/whistles. I do not wish to upgrade to a directX card just to allow easy transfers to my iPod / iTouch. I am using an Intel 82810E Graphics Controller with drivers provided by Wicrosoft.
Set your performance for best performance:
+ Right click on the "My Computer" icon
+ Click on "advanced" - "Performance" - Visual
+ Click on "adjust for best performace"
Note: This changes the XP look, had no effect for me.
If you are still having trouble, close iTunes, open the Windows Media player to import your CD with the following settings: Tools - Options
Player - Deselect start player in media guide (unless you really like it)
Copy Music - Deselect Copy Protect Music (otherwise it only works in WMP)
    Root cause?
I suspect that the iTunes is calling a function that it expects the video card to do easily. I suspect that the video card doesn't have that functionality, so the video card driver tries to emulate the functionality. The slow response from the driver apparently causes iTunes to go haywire.
    If you read this far:
Please let me know if you found this helpful by writing a response.
If you can think of anything (other than buying a new computer) that would allow this applicaiton to work, let me know. BTW: A real old version of quicktime works just fine on my 486!
    Apple developers:
I would be open for a test bed if you need older HW to qualify on.
Any idea why the credits would cause the page faults?
Any way to use a bare bones video library (e.g. no scrolled fades etc.)?
For an application that essentially copies files to my iPod, it sure uses a lot of resources.

    Welcome to AD!

  • ITunes takes ages to load, then is really slow.

So I've been trying to use iTunes the past day and it's been taking ages to load and then is really slow when its opened. I used the most recent version of iTunes 11. Uninstalled, Reinstalled. Deleted preferenced, Reinstalled. Using iTunes 10 (which worked very well in the past). Finally I gave up and factory reset my PC. And STILL the symptoms are here. My question to the community is if anyone else is experiencing this.
    PC Specs:
    i5 650 3.2GHz
    12GB RAM
    1TB HDD
    nVidia GeForce GTX460 SE
So it's nothing to do with my hardware's capability.

    Small update...
WHen Itunes did eventually load... a few odd things happened.
    1. The icons on my toolbar flicked to white / blank and then came back
    2. Windows Update sprang into life and asked me to install 1 important update
    3. I got an error message
The software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones was not installed correctly. Do you want iTunes to try to repair this for you?
    5. I clicked Yes...
    6. It said it was checking my itunes library
    7. I got a message The Bonjour service has been disabled. Bonjour is required to share music with others. Please re-enable the service to use this feature
    8. This didn't seem to bad so clicked OK
    9. BUt then Itunes disappeared again. It is still running in processes but isn't open.
    Gah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My ipad is running really slow, and it will not let me connect to iTunes or App Store, but have another iPad in house which is working fine I,please help

Try a hard reset by pressing the Home button and Wake / Sleep button at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.
This does not lose any data on your iPad.

  • Itunes conversion feature REALLY SLOW

Hi. Today's my first time using the conversion feature in itunes. (Advanced tab: Create iPod or iPhone version). I'm trying to convert my mp4 file into one that's suitable for my iPod. The problem is that the version is REALLY SLOW. It's been converting for over 30 minutes but the progress bar on top only has about ONE MILLIMETER filled in! To the people who've used the itunes conversion feature before, can you please tell me if the conversion was this slow for you guys?
    Thanks!

  • ITunes 7 really slow

    Hi I have this problem...
When I load my iTunes, some 4000 songs, my computer turns out really slow... The specs are good though: 2GB Ram, 3GHz Intel 630, fast s-ata hard drive... Right now my iTunes is synching with my iPod at a ratio of 20 songs an hour, strange because it's via USB2... What can I change to speed up things? Right now I'm starting to get disgusted with iTunes 7, I read somewhere that installing iTunes 6 can help, but I bought myself a new iPod Video and it needs the 7...
    Please help

  • Why has iTunes gone really slow

Ok for some reason after updating from one of the software updates for mountain lion, iTunes has now become really slow! It's extremely annoying because every time I open it up the whole mac becomes slow and lags loads! I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing anything like this or is it just me? Also if you know what's wrong, please help me as I can't do anything whilst iTunes is syncing my iPhone and iPad. Thanks.

your stats show no problems has this started today if so this link may explain more http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15036

  • ITunes is really slow now.

I added about 1500 songs in the past week, and now iTunes is really slow. Whenever I do anything with iTunes I get the colorful wheel. Can I fix this?

is this with iTunes 11.0.3 (the newest update that just came out a week or two ago)?
If so, don't do anything. I think 11.0.3 is a little buggy - I've noticed the spinning beachball too, sometimes clicking things does nothing, and it crashes a lot. I'm expecting/assuming that Apple will have another update out within a few weeks to fix the bugs.
Quitting and restarting iTunes might help, but I wouldn't do anything more than that.

  • IPod touch is REALLY slow to load and won't connect to iTunes on the PC

I have an iPod touch that won't connect to my iTunes account anymore.  It is also really really slow to load.  I have powered it down and back up and it is still really slow.  Has anyone else experienced this?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • ITunes Upgrade resulting in slow CD import

Last weekend I updated ITunes on my PC. After the update I am now experiencing painfully slow CD imports into ITunes.  A normal 15 track CD would take under 5 minutes in the previous ITunes version but now takes about 6 minutes per song.  The external driver firmware is up to date, I have the latest of everything Windows related on the laptop. Can I get an earlier version of ITunes - very frustrating.

No scrached disks (some of them brand new), and I tried about eight or nine and all were equally slow.
Regarding read speed: The internal DVD-drive (Pioneer 106D) on my four-year old Dual G5 has a read speed of 32X for audio disks, but are those 8X enough to explain the more than 50% better rip speed?
The G5's got faster disks, though, so maybe that is an issue?

  • Macbook Pro 13' (Late 2011) STILL really slow since updating to Mavericks

So I've seen a lot of discussions about the same issue and some have threads have been solved, yet others remain unknown. I have the same problem as others that stated they have experience something similar to my case. Just fyi though, that my computer was already really slow prior to upgrading to Mavericks (on Mountain Lion). That was when I decided to do a clean install of Mountain Lion and everything was snappier than ever. It wasn't long until Mavericks came out and I instantly did an upgrade but everything suddenly started slowing down again and it's getting worse. I hope someone can help me out here, thank you.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Slow cd import with imac 24 vs dual G5

my new imac 24 is much slower at importing cd's (converting to mp3 at 192) than my G5... something like 7-8x with the imac vs 18-20x with the G5... ???
is this typical for your results or do I have a bum setting???
    stephen

    bump... anyone?
the same cd with the same import settings: (ripped with iTunes to MP3 at 192)
    iBook 1.07 G4 5-10x
    power mac dual 1.8 G5 18-22x
    iMac 2.16 24" 7-10x
I really expected more out of the new intel core 2 here... little better than my iBook G4, and the power mac dual G5 is twice as fast...

  • My macbook pro is running really slow after upgrade to Mavericks

my macbook pro is running really slow after upgrading to Mavericks....any ideas?

OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
The above link is not very useful, so if it doesn't help read on.
There are many potential reasons that a Mac may be running slower than expected, but more information is required to begin troubleshooting, much more.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you before proceeding. It is premature to conclude your hard disk is failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.
