ITunes 8 Trouble: erased my playlist, play counts and date added

After installing itunes8 my library was empty so I added my itunes folder back in and everthing is back in the library. But my playcounts are at zero and my playlists are gone. All the "date added" say 9/10/08. When I plug in my iPod it says it's not synced to this library. So is there anyway to restore everything back to normal? Or atleast get my playlists back?
they really messed up with this itunes 8. I'm dissappointed.

  • Got a new Mac, my iTunes is whack, (No Play Count or Date Added)

Hello, everybody. It's been a rough night.
I currently own a G4 iMac and I just got a brand new Macbook. The Macbook is very nice, it's extremely speedy and I am sure I will grow to love it. We've got just one hurdle to get through together: the organization of my music in iTunes. Now, I've had the iMac for five years, and not long after I got it adding music to it became something of an importance, it was my music player. Over the past five years I've not only added thousands of songs, but meticulously and very specifically organized them into playlists based on the number of spins they have and when they were added. To a lot of people I know this sort of thing isn't a huge deal, but for me this organization became, and I kid you not, a huge, huge part of my life.
So I get the new Macbook, fire it up and use Migration Assistant, (with the iMac in Target Disk Mode), to move my data over. When it's done I open the iTunes and am greeted with... nothing. Well, okay, all of my music is there, that's nice, (it's what iTunes is for, etc etc), but NONE of my play count or date added information remains. I weep inside.
Being that this is my first new computer in five years, (a long time!), you might be able to tell that I was hesitant about upgrading. Before getting my Macbook I asked experts at the Apple Store if this method would work, and even received assurance from several people online that everything would be preserved. So, I did my homework, but my Macs and I both apparently failed the test. Here's where we are now:
    1. The iMac, (running Tiger), still has iTunes on it, with all the information, nothing seems to have changed on that end.
    2. The Macbook has a hard drive full of music with no playlist, play count or date added data.
    3. I do own an iPod where I backed up the music before the move. I know that the data information on playlists, play count and date added is on the iPod. I do not dare plug it in to the new machine for fear of the unknown.
Which brings me here, is there some way, any way of rectifying this? Here is what I would like:
    1. For the Macbook iTunes to look EXACTLY like the iMac's does.
    2. For it to work with both my old iPods without question.
This has been long, and I fear that some may pass it over as something too much of an banality to be needed help with. But like some collect shoes or hats, I collect music. It's a lovely collection and it's a large part of who I am. I could start all over, but that's sort of like saying the world could start over if it by chance happened to forget how to turn. It would take a lot of effort, and there would be some (more) tears, but I could move on. But I really, really don't want to. I just want things to be the way they were. I'd very much like to have this information present, and I thank you all for your time.

    ADDED:
Now that I look at it, appears that nothing except for my applications transferred over. My old computer is listed in the Hard Drive, but I can't access any of the folders because I don't have that "level of privileges" or whatever, (odd, considering they're both my computers, do they need to be hooked up for this?). I don't really need for my old applications to be there, (Hello, iWork '06 Demo!), so can I just go and erase them, or am I better just starting all over again?

  • [All Platforms][Playlists] Play count and play history for songs to create personal charts

Hi guys, I switched from iTunes to Spotify about a year ago and I really do like the service. Lately I checked out Apple Music and in comparison Spotify still kicks ass. However, it was incredible to have access to all of my old iTunes playlists again. Why? Because I created playlists with my personal charts, meaning intelligent playlists which sort songs by play count. I would love to see this feature in Spotify. Additionally you could also track when a song has been played, so I could create a playlist which lists my favorite songs from a specific time frame.  Best wishesDominik

Sup man! I made the switch from iTunes about 3 years ago, but I have never gone back. Especially since I have a $5 / mo deal for Spotify premium for students, so premium is sick to use on the computer and transfer music painlessly to your electronic device. Cool stuff. Also, the algorithms that Spotify employs have unique shuffling programs implemented internally. They get numerous complaints about similar songs/artists playing in close sequence to one another. When this would happen (the original random number generator would obviously play the same artist within 3-4 songs because of pure chance and logistics), so they implemented a different algorithm as a fix. The new algorithm implemented a fix for this complaint (which was considered to be along the lines of the gambler’s fallacy theory… but that’s another long explanations) so that people wouldn’t complain as much. This switch happened within the past year, so people are just starting to notice how the shuffle feature has “improved”. This whole thing brings on the discussion of “what truly is random?” when it comes to the world of random number generators and the gambler’s fallacy. If you want to check out my Spotify playlists, my acct is: chrisheishman and my most popular playlist actually is “acoustic indie mix” with about 400+ songs and 200+ followers. You should check it out! Cheers & good luck with your music journey! Chris

  • Just updated my ITunes, Plays fine, but play count and date played do not change. What is going on?

Updated I Tunes 11.0 and all plays well, just the last date played never changes and the play count remains the same no matter how many times I play the song. Not really sure where to go with this.

    Hi Liz,
Sorry to hear you are having a similar problem.  Last night I went to the tool bar at the top of iphoto, clicked on "File",  then clicked "Browse Backups" in the drop down menu.    I have an external hard drive that is set up to Time Machine.   The Browse Backups  opened the iphoto pages in the Time Machine.  I selected a date one day ahead of the day I performed the now infamous update, and it showed my iphoto library as it had existed that day.   I then clicked  "Restore Library" at the bottom right corner of the Time Machine screen.   Roughly 2 hours later my iphoto was back to normal.   When I opened iphoto there was a message saying I need to upgrade my program to be compatible with the new version of iphoto(version 9.2.1).  I clicked "Upgrade" and within seconds it had done whatever upgrading it needed to do.
The only glitch in the restoration was that it restored the library as it appeared last week, so I no longer had photos I had imported this past weekend.   I simply went back to the Browse Backups in the drop down menu,  when Time Machine opened I selected the page showing my pictures from this weekend and again said to Restore Library.   Roughly 45 minutes later the library was restored including the most recent photos.
I am now a happy camper.
I don't know if any of this will be of help to you because your email says you are having trouble with photos imported after the upgrade was performed.   Have you had any pop up notices when you first open iphoto,  that tell you you need an upgrade to be compatible with the new iphoto?     If so have you clicked "upgrade"?
Good luck Liz,  if you have Time Machine running as a back up to your library, maybe you wil be able to get help there, by following my instructions above.   Otherwise,   good luck with your investigations.   I'd be interested in hearing how you make out.

  • IPod Shuffle 2 no longer updating playlist play count and last played date

I use my shuffle 2 in the gym.  When I'm done working out I sync and the most recently played songs are rotated off using a smart play list.  This is no longer working.  I reset the shuffle 2, I've forced sync and auto filled many times.  My latest workout it still lists all the songs I just listened to in the order I listened to them and has their last played date as many months ago.
This seems to be affecting my other iPod too, but it is tougher to diagnose.  I signed up to iTunes Match and after several days that is still running but I noticed this problem long before iTunes Match became available in Canada.  Both my iPod Shuffle and iTunes are up to date but my music is on an older but upgraded Mac.  It has a G4 so no Lion upgrade, I just checked it is 10.5.8

All my tracks should be MP3s or AAC.  I ripped them myselfs with iTunes.  I may have bought some songs directly off of record labels or some other online music store, but I own my music legally whether I bought it on CD or got given it by magazines or record labels.
I went to the gym today.  I set the shuffle to random.  Some songs were synched back to iTunes but they weren't the songs I listened to, at least not all of them.  Some of them may have been the songs I listened to last workout, at least one or two of the songs updated I did listen to today.
I listened to some other songs last night on my main Mac so it is easy to determine which songs iTunes updated this morning.
I haven't had much time to play with Match.  It is still updating and uploading, it has 6000 songs to go.  That means in a half month of trying it has managed to find and/or upload a little over 1000 songs actually close to 2000 now.  It is something, but it isn't the service I was sold.  All my songs and playlists were supposed to be available in the cloud.  That hasn't happened and in the case of my smart playlists will never happen.
I'll read you link, but I wrote a blog posting how I was disappointed with the service so far.
    Thanks!

  • L can not find my playlist, play count, etc. on my new macbook itunes

I have recently purchased a macbook. i have about 22G of music oon my external hard drive. I have moved about 6G of music from my external HD to my macbook. I can not figure out how to get my playlist, play counts and ratings on the macbook. I do not want to add all of my original itune music 22G because i will be away with my laptop and i need the space for other things. I am not able to bring the External HD. I hope someone can help me with this. thanks

To transfer your iTunes metadata (tags, playcounts, playlists, etc) you need to locate and transfer the iTunes Music Library file from the original computer to the MacBook.
The easiest way to do that is to export the iTunes Library data as an XML file, email to yourself, and save it on the MacBook's desktop.
Now open iTunes and from the file menu, select Import, and navigate to the xml file, and select. This will add all of the data you are looking to put on the MacBook. However, you will get all of the songs - not just those that were added to the MacBook's hard drive. These will have the dreaded next to the name. If you can live with this, this is the easiest way to add your metadata.

  • Can I get my music collection (play counts and playlists inc.) from my iPad to my PC?

I had a problem with iTunes where I couldn't add songs to the library because I didn't have sufficient permissions to edit my iTunes library (even though I did). After a few days of tweaking administrator permissions and the like, I got really annoyed and tried re-installing iTunes to see if it would make it go away. Whilst the iTunes64Setup.exe file was downloading, I was fiddling with the .itl and .xml files in my iTunes folder and when I re-installed iTunes I had lost all my play counts and playlists. When iTunes opened, I assumed it must have overwritten the two files because when I looked at them in Windows Explorer they were both a lot smaller in size.
Obviously, I didn't sync my iPad or iPhone after this had happened, so I still have the playlists and play counts stored on them. Is there any way I can:
    a) Recover a previous version of the .xml and .itl files on my laptop and use them to restore my plays?
    or
    b) Use iTunes Match to restore them onto my laptop?
I'm not sure about b). When you subscribe to Match, does it analyze your current library and then save it to the Cloud so you can redownload it?
I'm going to buy the new iPhone when it is released in the next couple of months so I'm willing to jailbreak my iPhone 4 if need be.
    Thanks for any help.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Restoring play counts & original data after reformat

I reformatted my computer and followed the steps online to restore my library, by importing my iTunes Library xml file from the desktop (and then dragging My Music into the iTunes window). Although I was able to obtain all of my original playlists, none of the play counts, or dates added, or similar, were restored.
If someone has any ideas about how to correct this, would be much appreciated!

    You are guessing right
After a reformat, the best way to restore your third party apps is to reinstall from their install disks. SuperDuper or Time Machine can certainly restore your Applications folder but in many cases you will need associated files. There's the rub. It's rarely the application but the associated file that is the problem. My user tip on where important data is stored may help.
Have you tested your apps in a new user account?
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • My iTunes doesn't keep track of my listening history anymore. It doesn't update play counts and default "Recently Played" playlist.

My iTunes doesn't keep track of my listening history anymore. It doesn't update play counts and default "Recently Played" playlist. But it still tracking plays from my iPhone and syncing them.
I've tried to repair it with setup file. Nothing's changed.
Can you help me with that?
NOTE: Now I tried disabling the crossfade feature and it worked, started to count again. But I like crossfade, I don't want to keep it off.

I think I got this figured out. The playcount does update, but not how the previous iPod models update their playcount. Instead of immediately updating the playcount right after you finish the song like the older iPod models, iPod Touch keeps the updates in memory. The next time you connect to iTunes it'll sync those playcounts in memory to the actual songs itself, effectively updating the playcount of the songs only after connecting to iTunes. I have set my syncing manually. That's why after connecting to iTunes, my playcounts are updated. BUT it doesn't solve the mystery of my Smart Playlist. Even though in iTunes, the correct songs are listed, in the iPod Touch, it shows the old playlist.
Don't you just hate that? It was working fine before on non-iPod touch models. Now we have to live with this new bug. I just hope when they release software 2.0 it fixes these bugs and that they *give it for free!* People shouldn't be charged on something they should have gotten as a support!

  • How to transfer library with play count and top 25 playlist to another itunes library?

    Hi,
I would like to transfer all my music, with the play count and top 25 most played and other playlists to another iTunes library on a Mac. How would I go about doing this?

What exactly are you trying to do?  You already have another library on the computer and wish to add items from another library?  This is not easily done and meeting all the requirements you have posted.  While it is possible to transfer play count I think it is one of the things that requires Applescripting knowledge.
If you are just wanting to move a library from one place to another that is possible, though still tricky because you start encountering user permissions.

  • Will play count and playhead position sync back to iTunes?

I have a bunch of smart playlists that contain all the unplayed episodes of my favorite podcasts. If I drag these onto the Shuffle, will the play count and playhead position from my Shuffle sync back to iTunes?
It seems like the answer is no -- this is really a one-way copy to the Shuffle, and not a "sync".

The iPod shuffle is supposed to maintain a "played" flag for played tracks. I don't know if podcasts will work the same way as normal tracks, but I can't think of a good reason why they wouldn't. Having said that, after the iTunes 8.1 update, my shuffle's marking the wrong tracks as "played" and leaving the actually played tracks unmarked, so until the iTunes team comes up with a fix for all the bugs they introduced in that update, anything goes.

  • When I sync my iPad with iTunes it does not update the play count?  Is there a setting I need to change?

When I sync my iPad with iTunes it does not update my play counts.  Is there a way to make this happen?

Are you using iTunes Match by chance?  I had no problems whatsoever with play counts synching between any of my devices until I started using iTunes Match.  I turned it off and magically my play counts synced.  Once. Hasn't happened again though.

  • ITunes Play Count and Last Played not updating?

    Hi All,
I have an IPOD shuffle 1GB 2nd gen, I'm using the latest ITunes 7.7.1.11, I have Windows XP SP3 intalled. On Aug 14th for some reason that was the last time ITunes Play Count and Last Played columns updated in ITunes. I listen to and recharge my shuffle everyday. When I hook my IPOD to the base it is recognized and ITunes opens and says it's syncing, then after about 30 seconds it says sync is complete, ok to disconnect, the flashing orange light goes green & everything seems correct except those 2 columns don't get updated, does anyone know how to make ITunes start updating that information again?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Steve

    Hi Paul,
Just downloaded and installed iTunes 8.0. I played a few songs on my shuffle and synced it again, the problem remains the same, the last played & play count do not change. I wonder what happened on Aug 14th because thats the last time it worked.
    Thank you again,
    Steve

  • Play counts and "Last Played" not updating on short songs?

It looks like a lot of people have had trouble with play counts not updating with crossfade turned on. I've never used crossfade, so this doesn't bother me. However, I do have a plethora of very short tracks in my library (owing to there being many video game soundtracks with short fanfares as tracks), and I've noticed that when playing any song that's 10 seconds or less, it will show up in the "History" tab of "Up Next", but "Plays" and "Last Played" remain the same. Any other song in my library, whether it's 11 seconds long like "Got a Star Piece (part 1)" from "Super Mario RPG" by Yoko Shimomura or 11 minutes long like "I Am" from "As the World Bleeds" by Theocracy, will update its play count properly when played. Why is 10 seconds enough time to play a song and add it to my history, but not enough time to update when I last played it and make it appear in the smart playlist of recently played songs? Is iTunes 11 so obsessed with 11 that if a song isn't 11 seconds long, it doesn't consider it to be worth tracking?

I am having this exact same issue in iTunes 11 running on OSX 10.6.8.
Short tracks (less than 10sec) do not update their metadata to increase the play count. However if I play a short track on my iPod or iPhone and then sync with iTunes the play count and last played info is updated.
This really messes up my smart playlists that use playcount limiters.
I hope there is a fix for this soon.

  • Help, Library corrupted, need to save ratings, play counts, and last played

Help, my iTunes lost its connection to my media server yesterday and it seems to have totally corrupted the library. I have all my music files intact, but if I recreate the library by starting afresh, I will lose 6 years worth of ratings, play counts, and last played dates. I do not want to lose this information. I have the information in an library export.
How can I add back the music and restore the metadata??
