Itunes 8 upgrade kills vista PC

I attempted to upgrade from itunes 6 to itunes 8 on my vista pc 4 hours ago. The pc froze on reboot (?) and I have not been able to get it to even boot. The screen image is repeated four times. The display is apparently locked into a lower resolution VGA mode.
The system restore to two days ago did not work.
I am looking at reloading the entire system to the original factory settings, reloading all of the applications and then restoring all of my data files. This will probably take a day and a half.

After you restart the computer, when you try to open up iTunes, try getting it from your Start > Programs menu. If you can open it that way, drag it from that menu to your desktop to re-create your shortcut. Perhaps it was somehow linked to your installer file rather than your application .exe file?

Go into your Documents\Music\iTunes\ directory. Move the files called "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" to your desktop. Then, you should be able to open up iTunes. If so, click your File menu and choose Import (if running iTunes 8 it's File > Library > Import Playlist) and choose the iTunes Music Library.xml file that's been placed on your desktop.

Whenever any Apple products are sent in for service Apple makes it very clear that it is not responsible for personal data left on those machines, and not backed up elsewhere. I'd imagine (although I'm not 100% positive) it would work the same for software. You might be able to find more information in Apple's legal documentation at http://www.apple.com/legal/. This is a user-to-user forum, so I'd be surprised if many people knew the specifics offhand.

The iTunes downloads have always been free. Regarding the 2.1 update, specific to an iPhone or iPod touch... if you have an iPhone you don't need to pay for the update. Same for the iPod touch, 2nd generation (the one released this past Tuesday). If you have a 1st generation iPod touch for which you've already paid for the upgrade, the iPod software update files will remain on your computer, even if you uninstall/reinstall iTunes. In the event that you need to re-download a 2.x version, simply act as though you are going to pay for it again with the same Apple ID used to purchase it the first time, and iTunes will automatically prompt you to download it again for free.

  • No sound or progress bar movement in iTunes with upgrade to Vista Ultimate

I just upgraded my computer to Vista Ultimate and my itunes does not play sound, although other applications on the computer do. Just in case, I downloaded the latest driver for my sound card. Also, the progress bar at the top does not move, although itunes shows that the song is playing. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times as recommended by the ITS people at my school to no avail. I backed up my music and completely wiped everything itunes and then reinstalled but it's still doing the same thing. Please Help!
    iPod 30 GB Windows Vista

    Hello
Because you wrote here already third time I have tested clean Vista installation on Qosmio G30-126 but the same PQG32E like yours.
I have installed Vista ultimate and the sound works without installing sound driver. Anyway install sigmatel sound driver. Please after Vista installation install Value Added Package at first. After doing this install:
    - display driver,
    - sound driver,
    - Synaptics TouchPad Driver
    - Software Modem and so on.
I hope everything will be OK.
    Bye and good luck!

  • Since I upgraded Windows Vista to Windows 7 iTunes only works in Windows 7 "Safe Mode".

Since I upgraded Windows Vista to Windows 7 iTunes only works in Windows 7 "Safe Mode". it will not run in the normal mode. (It ran properly in Vista)  I spent several hours with the Microsoft Technician going through the "1717 suggestions, but to no avail.  On my own, I tried iTunes in Windows 7 "Safe Mode" and was successful!  It ran like a charm.  Unfortunately, I can't run iTunes properly in "Safe Mode"  I have not tried moving one set of the files yet.  But if iTunes works in Safe Mode, do I need to relocate anything or do I need to find what is causing the conflict between Windows 7 and iTunes?

    Which Satellite A205?
Which Windows 7 (64-bit)? What about the other laptop?
Which printer model, version, and so forth?

  • Just upgraded to vista and now can't open itunes

I just upgraded to vista (what a pain) I have uninstalled itunes and then reinstalled itunes but I still can't open it. This is what happens. When I click on the itunes icon I get the licence agareement which I check agree and when it goes away I get an error message which says: "The folder Itunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." I have tried clicking on the Itunes icon and have gone to itunes properties control panel and clicked on security and tried to get permission many times. After reading post's on this fourm I went to the itunes folder on my c drive and went to the same control panel and tried again but to no avail. I had no trouble with itunes on XP and have used it for years. Btw I can open Quicktime player but it will not play my video files (I don't care because quicktime is not my default player). but I can open it.
I have an Ipod nano and I want to use it to listen to audio books but I can't load them onto it without itunes.
Thanks for any help in advances

Yes I still have a problem. This is what it is in a nutshell. With User Account Control on in vista I can't open itunes. I am not sure what happens when I try but here goes. First I have installed itunes into my computer and have an icon on my desktop. When I click on that icon the first thing that happens is that I get a licenses agreement which I accept. As soon as I accept the agreement it goes away and I get an error message that says “The folder Itunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." The only option that the error message gives me is to say “OK”. When I click on the OK button on the error message it goes away and nothing else happens. Because of this problem I have uninstalled and installed itunes at least 5 times.
I have tried to read as many post in this forum as I can trying to find a solutions to this problem but to no avail. I have also gone to the vista forum and have read as many posts as I can about itunes problems that are there but to no avail. I have tried many fixes that have not work except one. And that was “to turn off the User Account Control.” When I turned off this control I was able to open itunes for the first times. Since then I have opened itunes many times and use it to load my ipod. But when I turn on User Account Control I have the same problem and I can’t open itune. I am open to suggestions on how to fix this problem and at this time I am not sure what is wrong. I have tried my things trying to fix this problem but for all I know I might have does something wrong. So at point I will try anything that you suggest.

  • Upgraded to Vista and kept iTunes Library on 2nd drive - how to retrieve?

Hi, I hope somebody can help!
I upgraded to Vista and at the same time installed a 2nd hard drive onto my PC. This has become the C drive and the new D drive is actually the former C one (i.e. before the upgrade). This is where my iTunes Library files are.
My question is, how can I import this folder into the new iTunes installation i have just done in a way which recognises my playlists, podcasts and purchased content??
    All help greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks!!

It may not be that simple... in Vista, the file path would be different.
You can try importing your library file:
    Launch iTunes
    Click File > Import
    Navigate to D:\...\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml
Select the iTunes Music Library file and import
I'm thinking in this case you may see your playlist data, but probably no audio files themselves.
You can add these to the library by clicking File > Add Folder to Library
    Navigate to D:\...\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\
Select the iTunes Music folder and add it
    http://lifehacker.com/software/itunes/geek-to-live--how-to-move-an-itunes-librar y-from-a-pc-to-mac-and-back-242468.php
That link explains the conversion of the library file from PC to Mac, but from XP to Vista is the same concept. Essentially, you'd need to find and replace the file path from
    C:\Documents & Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\
    to
    D:\Users\username\Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\
(these folders may still be "my documents" and "my music" depending on which edition of Vista you have)
    Hope this is helpful

  • TS1717 are there problems with iTunes upgrading from Vista to Windows 7?

are ther problems upgrading iTunes from Vista to Windows 7?

The best method is to use Windows Easy Transfer first to backup all your data, and do custom clean install. And install all your apps and drivers afterwards.
Yes it should work. Make sure you are ready, and have all the latest drivers and applications ahead of time.
There are some "gottchas" with the upgrade from Vista.

  • ITunes 8 upgrade and Windows Vista

I tried installing the iTunes 8 upgrade and have not been able to get it to install correctly. When it completes the installation, it says that it needs to reboot my system, so I tell it to go ahead and reboot. Once the system is rebooted, I click on the iTunes icon and iTunes starts to try to re-install again. This happens repeatedly. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

  • ITunes Not Responding with Vista 64-bit Running on Dell Studio 15

    Hi!
I am running Vista 64-bit SP2 and downloaded the newest 64-bit version of iTunes. My music is located on an external network drive. Every time I open iTunes it starts to load the music and then just sits there and I have to kill it with the Task Manager.
I had the same setup only using XP on my old laptop and iTunes ran fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing a problem? I started with a brand new laptop with Vista SP1 and had the same error. So I just upgraded to Vista SP2 thinking that might help but it had no effect.
Thank you for any suggestions, I don't know what else to try...

Itunes was unable to load data class information from sync services. reconnect or try again later.
    any suggestions pls
    Mario

The article says that I should upgrade to the latest iTunes. I am on the latest iTunes version.
If you could read just a tiny little bit further, under the "Additional Information" section immediately after that, it says:
If you are still experiencing this issue when syncing, or have not installed Xcode 4 and get this alert:
Follow the troubleshooting steps in Mac OS X v10.5, v10.6: Resetting the SyncServices folder.
If the issue is still unresolved, follow steps in Sync Services: Advanced troubleshooting for contact and calendar syncing.
    Have you tried those measures?

  • Authorization Problems with iTunes 7.1 and Vista

I'm running Windows Vista Business edition. Any time I try to play a purchased song, I get prompted that "you've already got 5 computers authorized to play this", but when I check my actual account settings, it says I've only got 3 computers our of 5 authorized (which is correct). I've tried updating to the latest version of iTunes (7.1) and it didn't help. I tried to run the "fix the seurity permissions issue in Vista" application that Apple released and it doesn't even appear to run (gives me the EULA, I hit 'accept' and it just closes the window).
Iv'e checked all of the standard issues that I've seen bandied about. Yes, I'm using my administrator account (my only account on the machine is my admin acct.). I've tried right clicking and launching it as an admin (just in case..)...no change. Songs that I have purchased since upgrading to Vista work just fine and will play. Anything purchased before the upgrade WILL NOT WORK.
I'm just kind of frustrated as other people have mentioned as well. I've got many many songs that I cannot listen to at all due to this issue. Plus to be honest, I'm afraid to plug in my iPod to update it. I don't want it to "update" and then all of a sudden I can't even play the songs from the iPod either. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it as it is getting a bit tiring.
    Thanks in advance.

Hey there - It sounds like you have songs from more than one account in your library.
When you try to play a song that needs to be authorized it'll have the account ID that it was purchased with listed in the pop-up window (where you enter your password).
This is the important part: Make sure that the account ID that the song asks you for is the ID that you login to the iTunes store with when you check how many authorizations you have left.
    Hope this helps!

  • Upgrade to Vista and Sync

I have just upgraded to windows Vista Home edition. My Itunes will not fully sync with my Video Ipod. My error message is: Itunes could not write to disk because I do not have access priviledges.
Most of my orginal stuff is there but non of my purchased music will sync.
    Craig

I can't believe there aren't more complaints like yours. I was able to transfer my purchased Itunes to my new Vista machine after I installed 7.1.1 to the new machine (running Vista Premium Home Media Center...whatever.
Gotta say that I like the way Itunes and Windows Media Player sort it out on Windows XP much better than on Vista. Everytime I launch Windows Media Player on Vista machine, as in to watch HDTV or play non-itunes stuff, Itunes launches anyway.
I know Microsoft probably doesn't care about this problem, but the programs should be able to work without stepping on each other.

  • Upgraded from vista to windows 7 not seeing music list

I upgraded from vista to windows 7. When I sync my iPhone 4 I am not seeing my music listed nor my apps in the list. I had backed up my entire computer to my external hard drive and copied everything over to iTunes. But not showing up in any lists when I connect my phone???? Any ideas?

    Hi,
I'm am used to working on Mac's but u don't think my advice will hurt.
iTunes reads your hard drive for songs and compiles a song list for them.
It then stores this data as your ituneslibrary.plist file.
In the file drop down menu you should have an option to select library.
Try reelecting your iTunes library icon and then it should reload your iTunes with playlists and play counts etc

  • Latest itunes update / upgrade messed up my itunes.

Last upgrade killed my itunes. I unistalled and reinstalled. I am still getting the message listed below.
    C:\Documents and Settings\All
    Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\Installer
    Cache\iTunes 9.0.1.8\itunes.msi.
It results in a fatal error.
What do I need to do to get itunes back?

Doublechecking. Is it saying that the iTunes.msi is missing?
