ITunes 9.0.2 Column Browser Problem

Since upgrading to iTunes 9.0.2, I'm having a problem in Column Browser mode.
I have the Column Browser pane on top, showing Genre, Artists & Albums.
As soon as I move the cursor into one of the fields, the list immediately jumps to the beginning of the list. If I scroll down and select an artist, as soon as I move the cursor, it jumps back to the top of the list. It's driving me nuts!
This happens with both my Apple Mouse and my Logitech MX Revolution. I've tried removing the Logitech driver, but the problem remains.
I've also tried trashing my iTunes preferences, which also didn't help.
Anyone else seeing this or have any suggestions?

Hello all,
I am unable to reproduce the behavior you are seeing. Can you use QuickTime Player to do a screen recording of the behavior occurring and send the file to me <[email protected]>. Please include a link to this thread on Discussions in your email and also your Discussions username (if you have one).
Thanks,
Roy

• Why can't I see the column browser in iTunes 11.4?

Why can't I see the column browser in iTunes 11.4?
Just imported a CD of rare folk music that a friend gave me and want to edit the title, album name, etc like I used to.
In iTunes under "View" the column Browser options are greyed out - not available.
Seems that this is the view where editing is possible.
What can I do to bring back column browser?

Select Songs (not Artists or Albums) at top and you can use the Column browser.

• ITunes Column Browser inoperative

I'm running a new 27-inch iMac under OS X Mavericks and with iTunes v.11.1.3(8). The past couple or three upgrades for iTunes have had the Column Browser "grayed out" and thus inoperative. I'd like to display my extensive collection of music showing when it was last played, but for that the Column Browser needs to be activated.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The option appears to have been removed in iTunes 11.

• After downloading the new iTunes, the scroll wheel scrolls way too much in the column browser and skips over 4 or 5 artists/albums every time.

Whenever I try to scroll through my artists or albums in the column browser, I suddenly feel like stuff is missing because every click of the scroll wheel brings the list down too far and it skips 4 or 5 items every time. My column browser is about 2 inches long and fits 7 items on the viewable pane at any one time. It used to work just fine, but now I'd have to have the browser more than double that size to avoid this weird problem.. and I dont really want it that big. I suppose I'll just make it that big unless there's some sort of solution, but I'd rather not have to change my personalized setup because iTunes decided to change something like that randomly. Would anyone happen to know how to fix this, or at the very least know what I'm talking about (and maybe you're experiencing it too).

I have stated what I was able to glean from the report. If you disagree so be it.
I will say that I heard the same comment numerous times in the past of years of usage without problems. Only to have them tell me later oh by the way I removed the code that you suggested I should remove and the performance increased.
As I said it is your Mac and you can do with it as you wish. I am just trying to help you solve your problem.

• I upgraded my Itunes to the latest version and now it won't let me view my library with the column browser. Can i get that back?

i upgraded my Itunes to the latest version and now it won't let me view my library with the column browser. Can i get that back? I tried using the shortcut for it and nothing happens. When I try to do it from the view menu, it shows up as something I can't click on. The new library format is driving me crazy and I just want to get back to the old library view.

We need to sort out some facts here first:
• You cannot be running Mt. Lion on your iMac G5. What Mac is it? What is the Model Identifier listed in About This Mac; More Info; Hardware Overview
• What is the model of your Epson Scanner?
• Have you attempted to scan using Image Capture, located in your Applications folder?
• Your Palm Pilot software will only run in Snow Leopard; so depending upon which Mac you have, you will either have to:
1) partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it to "dual-boot" when you want to access you Palm software, or
2) install Snow Leopard Server (now available from Apple for $20 telephone orders USA & Canda only) into Parallels 8 to run your Palm software in Mt. Lion:

• Can't see album art in Songs view in iTunes 11, column browser issues

The column browser is still the most effective way for me to navigate my music, but in iTunes 11 it's only available in Songs view. This kinda makes sense, the column browser would be somewhat redundant in the other views, but Songs view is now missing the album art on the left side, which makes it a lot harder to view my music. This is what it looked like in iTunes 10:
In iTunes 11 it looks like this:
The album art was't just pretty, it had a great function of visually separating each of my albums in the list view. Now they all mush together. Sure, I can see the art now in the Artists or Genre view, but not with the column browser. I want to be able to sort by Genre, Artist and Albums - all three. Not one or the other. The column browser is the only way to do this and it just got uglier.
On top of all this, now if I navigate to a certain place in the column browser and then click on anything else in iTunes, like the Artists view, Movies, Podcasts, etc and then jump back to the column browser, the whole column browser is reset and I've lost my place. This never used to happen in iTunes 10.
It's like Apple is trying to marginalize the column browser till no-one wants to use it anymore.

I found this in another discussion about iTunes 11:
"To view in list/song view with art work on the side
Go to prefernces >general and uncheck use large text. Go to Artist view > view > options > check group compulations. then clik on all artists and all you music will appear in list view with the art work on the left This is great for me as I recognize my music by art work not title, artist, ect.. Wish I could do additional sorts/see info in this view such as date added, BPM, last played ect."
can you try it and post a screen shot?

• The column browser is no longer available when trying to view music in iTunes. I'm only able to use the column browser only when viewing playlists. Why?

I noticed that after one of the recent updates to iTunes, I am unable to view my music using the column browser type view. Only when I select one of my playlists is the music displayed with the column browser. When I select Music to view the contents of my library, only the album covers are displayed on the right side. The old column browser type display is not available any more - it is grayed out. I do have "show list views for all media" checked in my Preferences / General tab.
Did Apple screw up or is it me?

You're welcome.

• Where is the column browser in itunes 12

I recently upgraded to iTunes 12, and I was surprised to find that my column browser was gone. I've searched around, and I've found several articles that say I can activate it using the View > Column Browser option, but I don't have a Column Browser option in my View menu. Any tips on how I can restore my column browser?

• ITunes 9.1 Column Browser

Is there any way to use the "colomn browser" in iTunes 9.1 to view the top songs when I try to "view all" from iTunes home page, or at least add an additional colomn to sort by? In every other iTunes version before this one I was able to use the column browser when I viewed the top songs?

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I've been away from my computer for a while. No. When I'm on the iTunes home page and I click on "see all" for the "Top Chart" songs, I just get a list of the songs with no way to sort through them by changing the column headings. Example: Say I want to sort through all of the "Top Chart Songs" by genre, I can not find a way to add that heading and sort by it. In earlier versions I could view those songs in a colomn browser way and sort by genre. Now when I try to use the column browser when I'm viewing the Top Chart Songs, it goes to a colmn browser but a colmn browser for everthing not just the Top Chart Songs.

• Why is my column browser greyed/grayed out in iTunes 11??

Since upgrading to iTunes 11 I haven't been able to get the column browser back to how I had it previously. I want to have a genre column and an artist column, but the column browser options are greyed out for me.
Any tips?

OK, I'm not ashamed to back down from my initial shock and awe about the new iTunes. I also discovered the simple fix for column browsing that thomaselsted eloquently describes, and I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt on the rest, as it has often proved to be true that climbing up the learning curve on a new piece of software or hardware can be rewarding.
However, Apple please note:
To column browse albums, etc. requires extra steps/clicks, because you have to get out of album view, for instance, go to songs view, turn on columns view, and take it from there. Not good.
When playing radio stations. the mini viewer does not show the current song.
Getting in and out of mini viewer is now also a multi-step process.
Those sorts of things need to be fixed, because adding features should subtract needed user involvement, not add to it!
Reserving my final judgement, which I am sure puts Apple into a stark terror mode.

• I can't use the column browser on my iPod classic when it is hooked up to iTunes. Did they do away with it?

When I hook my iPod Classic up to iTunes on my computer the column browser is not there and the selection to turn it on is grayed out. Has it been done away with? It is still there on a 5th generation Nano.

It might be the battery, it sure sounds as though it could be. What happens if you leave it to charge, does the charging symbol show, does the battery icon show full, part full or empty at any time?
If you check here; https://locate.apple.com/uk/en/ and enter your postcode in the Service box, you should see the options available to you from Apple and its Authorised Service Providers. They can advise you about the battery and you should be given the cost before you commit to spending your dosh!

• ITunes 11 - column Browser

Is it just me or does the column browser only work when you choose songs or Playlists from the menu at the top of the window?
I think the column browser should always be available. I have a large 'classical music' collection and this is much better way to help organise music for cataloging and of course for listening.
Apple if you have turned of this feature please consider turning it back on. I have been loyal to your for years even before it was cool. I am sure I am not the only one.

Thanks, but the column browser is not available in my PLAYLISTS view - still grayed out. As for the songs operation, why in the world would I want to operate the system that way? I have 30,000 songs on my computer, and I don't listen to music by song but by artist and album. Therefore I woudl love to see my music collection the way I could see it in the previous incarnation of iTunes. That is, I could simply scroll through the artists in a grid view, which allowed me to see dozens of artists at a time. Now a have a vertical list of a thousand artists.
All this means that if I want to see my music in the form closest to my earlier version, I have to go to playlists and select ARTIST from the VIEW list. If I'm working from a smaller play list, I can select the GRID view, and that provides some relief from the pointless complexity.
Also missing: The LAST PLAYED option is now gone. That was helpful to have when you're listening to music several hours a day. It would also be helpful to have when the system breaks away from music playing while downloading from iTunes.
MORE TO THE POINT: If you leave playlist and then return, iTunes doesn't place you where you were. It starts at the top of the artist list. That's just dumb, as it assumes that all listeners are static from the beinning of a song to the end. In other words, we can't browse without starting over when we want to return to our starting point.
My discussion of the column browser may have been slightly dumb, but here's the deal: I was simply hoping to find a way of viewing my music as I did in the earlier version. This new iTunes is geared toward a different kind of listener - maybe those who play pop songs here and there. That's fine, but why did Apple have to destroy the earlier version?
The upshot is that this new version is a colossal pain, and for those of us who are serious collectors it offers no advantages and many disadvantages. I am now looking for a different way to play music. I'm also looking to buy more music from Amazon - the price point is better anyway.

• Need Help with iTunes 11.0 Column Browser - PC

In the new version of iTunes 11.0, I can't seem to get three columns when using the column browser. I want to see Artists, Albums, and then Songs in that order, but it won't allow me to move the Songs panel as a column. I was able to do this with the older version of iTunes. This is a waste of screen space since the artists and albums don't require wide columns at all. What is up with Apple these days?

I'm using iTunes 11.0.2 on a 21" iMac that's 2 years old. Today iTunes started playing on it's own and it's never done that to me before. I had to Force Quit iTunes twice and I restarted my computer. As soon as I restarted my computer I did not open iTunes, but within 10 minutes it not only opened itself but it started playing. This is super frustrating and I need it to stop. Can anyone help?

• ITunes store forces columned browsing on music genre

I am trying to get to the home page for the Christian & Gospel section of the iTunes store but this stupid columned browsing keeps showing up. Removing the columned browsing feature sends it back to the main music home. I have reinstalled iTunes, deleted plists, EVERYTHING but it's like the program is hellbent on keeping it in columned browsing. I've tried in seperate users too and it changes nothing. All other music genres have their main pages displaying properly.

I just replied similarly in another post of mine. I hope this helps. Yup, iTunes removed the genre. Here is the response from iTunes support:

I understand that you are concerned that the Christian & Gospel category disappeared from the iTunes Store.
Unfortunately, these are no longer available. However, Apple is constantly working with content providers to expand the iTunes Store catalog and to make more items available. Just check the Store for updates because new items are added everyday.

• Albums not showing up in column browser

I am using itunes 11.0.1.12. Along the top, I have the "songs" tab checked. Then underneath I have "genres", "artists", and "albums" in the column browser. When I go to "rock" in genres, then "Beatles" in artists, I only have 1 album (Sgt Pepper) show up in the genre list but I have 4 albums by them! I see all the songs and albums in the main view and can play them all, but for some reason only Sgt Pepper shows up in the album field on top in the column browser. This is also not unique to the Beatles. This is happening with other artists as well.
I did not have this problem with earlier versions of itunes, where genre, artist, and album were originally on the left instead of on top. It was working perfectly. I have not changed any fields in any songs or anything else for that matter. Just a simple upgrade to the newet version of itunes.
Please, any help would be greatly appreciated as this is incredibly frustrating.
Thank you

You've picked the correct place to post regarding iTunes for Windows. (Or the post was relocated.)
Select one track from one album that hasn't appeared where you expect it to. Press CTRL+I to Get Info and look at the summary tab. Where does iTunes tell you that the file is? Where do you think it should be? A common issue is files going into the Compilations folder when you might expect them to be listed under the Album Artist.
