Itunes 9.02, Snow Leopard and iMac 24 - FREEZE UP!

I have 4 mac machines in the home and this problem is only affecting the iMac 24. From reading multiple forums, I can safely say that I am not the only one. iTunes freezes sort of randomly during playback, store browsing, podcast etc...
The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. After I reboot my local Disk needs to be repaired with Disk Utility as the directory counts do not match. I have used the install DVD to repair my main disk over 10 times now.
I have tried all the suggestions on the forums including:
removing plugins
Re-installing iTunes (multiple times)
Rebuilding library
removing SyncServices directory
disabling genius and home sharing
and more
This problem seems to have started after the installation of iTunes 9
I am usually a very happy Apple customer but this has been quite the frustrating experience. Can someone acknowledge this issue at Apple so that I can rest assured that a patch will fix this at some point?
I am out of ideas and search engines to look for answers. Any feedback on this thread is appreciated.

I am reporting exact same problem on iMac 24" (3.06GHz/Mac OS X 10.6.2/iTunes 9.0.2).
iTunes randomly freezes, leaving only the spinning beach ball. Sometimes, if left alone for several minutes, it'll report "iTunes library files cannot be saved (-50)" error. Alas, clicking "OK" to dismiss the dialog window only results in the same message popping up again and again. In all cases of iTunes' freezing and the ensuing beach ball, the Dock seems to go awry, too. The application switcher (command-tab) won't show and clicking on the dock will only freeze it; But, the menubar clock somehow still runs.
After a hard restart, which I am so weary of after having done so many during the last couple of months, iTunes always goes through the long "Checking iTunes library" process before starting up again.
I can't seem to pinpoint the pattern for these freezes.
For now, I have disconnected a Western Digital My Studio II external hard drive used for Time Machine per some online discussion about the lack of Snow Leopard support for that drive by Western Digital and have tossed iTunes' preference files. I'm not ready to rebuild the library file just yet.
At any rate, I hope someone can give us a clear answer. Thank you.

  • Sharing iTunes Library between Snow Leopard and Windows 8

    My setup:
    2006 Macbook, running Snow Leopard
Microsoft Surface Pro, running Windows 8 Pro
    Toshiba 1TB portable external HDD
I am using my external HDD to host all of my media content, including my iTunes library. When I want to take advantage of the portability of my Surface Pro, I connect my external HDD to my MacBook, and use my MacBook as a media server. When it is connected this way, all of my music is in my iTunes Library. When I use my MacBook to listen to my iTunes library, all of my music is there. The problem is when I connect my external HDD directly to my Surface Pro, some of my music is missing. This is inconvenient because it leaves me without the ability to add new music or delete music from my iTunes library unless I am working on my MacBook. I have already tried ripping my iPod, which actually has ALL of my music on it, and transferring it directly to my external HDD. When it is connected to my MacBook directly, it looks like that actually worked. However, if I connect it to my Surface Pro or use my MacBook as a server and connect to my external as a network drive, the music is missing. Am I missing something obvious? Has anyone else had this problem?

Sounds like some of your music on external drive is in file format that Windows can't read. Am I missing something?

  • Will reinstall of Snow Leopard help iMac stop freezing?

    Hello,
I've been having problems with my Mac freezing.  I've tried all kinds of things (verify and repair permissions and disk etc, make sure enough free space, as well as checking fans, disk utility etc) and the problem persists.  It's a 24inch iMac that I bought in late 2008 and the problems have been  ongoing intermittently for  months now.  Basically what will happen is  that I’ll be using it when it will suddenly freeze and the screen goes  blank.  The only thing that works then is to restart by holding down the  power button on the back to turn it off and then on again.  I use it  most often for internet (I use firefox) but the issue has happened when  doing other things too, so I don’t think it’s related to any particular  programme.
I took it into the genius bar and after checking the disks and finding no problem their advice was to reinstall snow leopard.  I was the last appointment of the day before a long weekend and the guy was helpful but fairly rushed.  The thing is that I had this problem with leopard as well before upgrading to snow leopard, so I can't see how it's related to snow leopard.  So, is reinstalling snow leopard likely to help?  Would it be easier to upgrade now to Mountain Lion instead and see if that helps?
Any suggestions gratefully accepted and please let me know if there's other information that you would need to know in order to provide any suggestions.
    Thanks so much in advance

I have the same model. What I suggest you try next for this problem:
    1. Run the Apple Hardware Test. It can't detect all hardware problems, especially intermittent ones like you might be having, but it is still a good first step.
    2. Reset the SMC. I'm not sure why but this has fixed some odd problems I have had in the past with my 2008 iMac.
    3. If this doesn't help, try running for a while without any peripherals attached to your iMac besides the keyboard & mouse. If you don't see any freezing problems, try reattaching your other peripherals one by one & running that configuration long enough to see if one of them is causing your problems.
    4. If none of this helps, go ahead & reinstall Snow Leopard, making sure you run Software Update afterwards to update it to the latest version. The Snow Leopard installer isn't like earlier OS installers. To reinstall the system just run it & accept the defaults. It won't write over or alter your user data or create any "Previous System" folder stuff, so it is a fairly painless procedure. It even performs the equivalent of Disk Utility's verify disk step, so you don't have to do that beforehand.
    5. If none of this helps, reply to this topic & we can suggest other things to try.

  • Apple Mail opens multiple windows (Snow Leopard and iMac)

After power outage and restart, Apple Mail will open several times after the double click on the app icon. Approximately 30 identical windows in a row with a huge black shadow around. The CPU utilization remains near 100%. The top mail window is very slow. A work is hardly possible. A restore of the Mail app with time machine was not successful. Mail can be left only with a "force quit". I can not find a solution for this strange behavior. Thanks for the help.

I am having the same problem. Mail appears with 2 windows, seems locked up, but actually it is grinding away. Response latency so great that it has become almost useless.

  • Since installing Snow Leopard and Lion two weeks ago, my iTunes program opens seemingly at will.  It usually starts playing music, too.  What is causing this?

Since installing Snow Leopard and then Lion on my Intel-based iMac two weeks ago, my iTunes program seems to open at will whenever the computer is on.   It often begins playing music, as well.  What is causing this and how do I make it stop?

There are ways to minimize, mitigate, and help avoid a lot of problems.
    Bootable backups.
Zeroing a drive twice before using, and format it with SL DVD Apple Disk Utility for sure.
Even a clean install should import old apps without having to reauthorize.
If you must do an upgrade, do it from the SL DVD, after repairing the drive and be sure to use the SL version of Alsoft Disk Warrior (4.2).
Wait six months before jumping on a new OS.
10% is still too many. Yes, it is more sensitive to RAM and hard drive errors, doesn't like some controllers; most ext hdd cases; and enough software to make for test-only status. And it only IDs some known incompatible applications, drivers, extensions, etc and does not remove even those always in best manner.
Plus, there are problems with the new Rosetta and the cache files it now uses. So some apps and plug-ins will cause more trouble. Not all are ready. Good reason to hold off for the months it takes.
Other devices act different as far as on/off behavior.
(Migrating from G5s to Mac Pro can cause all kinds of problems, weird behavior, sluggish system, and why anyone that went down that road was strongly recommended to NOT use Migration Assistant for any of their applications, and to ONLY do clean/fresh installs of any apps. If you skipped that day, didn't read the Guide to M.A., or didn't want to do fresh installs then, your system could have been on borrowed time. If you did do clean install of applications, great.
Installing SL can result in a corrupt directory - I think and it "seems" to be happening, but no real proof, just gut feeling and instinct (underlying file system problem? weak sectors that pre-existed waiting to happen?).
Remember all the "there just aren't a lot of 64-bit drivers" for Vista and XP? it's come home to roost.
... my guess is not enough incense and offerings. To hop into TimeMachine and SuperDuper backup images and pull the 1TB for another day (week, month, year).

I have a 22" iMac desktop running OSX 10.6  Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command P R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? I just did a software update yesterday and have about 20GB left on my Hard drive. The last thing I did was try to install some plugin's for Pro Tools 8, but it wouldnt let me install so I restarted and now I'm screwed. Please Help!

    iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.6)

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie.  Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks for the reply.  I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long.  After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix.  I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and a new Imac. Could someone tell me where the preference is to change file to open in original program instead of preview?

Right-click on one of the files and choose 'get info'. in the info box. Change the 'open with' setting to your correct application. Check the 'always open with' option before OK-ing the change, then click the 'change all' button before closing the info window.

I'm trying to update my parent's iMac G5 with OS X Snow Leopard and unable to do so because it doesn't have an Intel processor. Are all new upgrades going to be unavailable? What is the last available upgrade? Is it possible to get an Intel processor installed?

Actually you can upgrade to snow leopard.  I have an iMac G4 and upgraded to snow leopard by installing it using an external DVD RW drive.  It was complicated but it worked.  I ended up going back to using tiger though.  I liked it better the simple old school way.

Until I installed the SMC FanControl application my screen would "break up" into strange patterns and then would eventually freeze.  Please help.

If you are trying to upgrade using a gray-faced OS X disk from another system, that won't work, as those disks are locked to the system types they are delivered with. You'll need to drop the $29 on a retail copy of Snow Leopard, which is available from the Apple online store. Note Snow Leopard requires 1GB minimum, and you may want at least 2GB for better performance.

I had an older version of Mac OS, I upgraded to Snow leopard and then OSx Lion, most of my software has been upgraded except for Imovie.  Now I can't get my projects to upload or share to iDVD or iTunes.   Also to compound the situation everytime I attempt to share to iDVD or iTunes, iMovie quits unexpectedly.    What do I do?

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.
