ITunes 9.1 not sorting artists correctly

Just upgraded iTunes on Win7 PC to 9.1 and seem to have a problem with sorting on the Artist.
I have a large (2800 CDs + various downloads) collection, with a lot of jazz - so quite a lot of music where the artist name is not a band name but a person's name. I always edit the Artist name so that it's Last name, First. The Album Artist that was added a while back was a nice help in this issue, but it seems to be causing problems with 9.1 I noticed after the upgrade that iTunes went through my library - and afterward, I suddenly had 150+ artists more than I did before. Charles, Ray had become 1) Charles, Ray 2) Ray Charles 3) Charles, Ray. (Yes, TWO entries with Charles, Ray.) Many other artists have similar issues and it seems to be taking the Album Artist and making duplicate entries for songs/records. When I removed the AA from the above, it collapsed back into 1 artist.
Additionally though, I have noticed that there is even more than that wrong. For example, I have many John Coltrane records. All 66 of them are now showing up in the sorting order as "Coltrane, John" - but in the letter "A" next to Alice Coltrane. Similarly for a couple of Stevie Wonder songs - they now show properly as "Wonder, Stevie" in the list, but they're sorted in "S" as if it's "Stevie Wonder".
This is really maddening. It looks to me like Apple messed up something here, and it's playing total havoc with the organization of my collection.

Update - it looks like after quitting and restarting iTunes, the problem of not sorting alphabetically (Wonder, Stevie in S) is gone.
However, it does appear to be sorting on Album Artist as primary key, instead of just Artist, and so far I can't find a way to change that.

The weird thing is, it worked before. I encoded all the videos previously and had them all listed and didn't encounter this problem, but I noticed I'd forgotten to decomb/detelecine the videos so I deleted everything and re-encoded it all. AFter filling the tags out and setting poster frames again I was thinking of making life easier by just pasting the same artwork for every episode, so I did, but didn't like the results so I deleted it again (I selected every video, used Get Info and pasted the artwork that way).
I think it was after this that the problem started to occur. In any case I've been through every episode and made sure the name, series, episode and episode id fields are all filled in with incremental values and they are. I even made sure the Sort Name field was filled in on every video. But this didn't work either.
So, thinking another restart was needed I deleted every video again. Re-encoded them all, again. Set the tags for every video and poster frame again. Finished it all off nicely, checked cover flow and was highly annoyed to find it was STILL showing the same two pieces of art work for every video as shown in that image I posted.
Ultimately, I wouldn't care so much that cover flow is screwing up like this as I always intended to sort by program anyway so it would only ever display one piece of artwork for an entire series of videos, however where-as when it was working it picked the artwork for the first episode of a series to display, its instead picking one of the latter episodes. I can't seem to find any way of choosing what artwork I want displayed.

I attach my Creative Zen to my computer true USB,
I manually copy Albums to my creative zen.
If i view my (ZEN) folder in Windows XP, everything looks great and sorted!
I safely remove my ZEN player from my computer,.
The ZEN rebuilds his data.
I go and view albums, and what do i see each time! over and over again!
Albums fused together, albums scattered true each other, MOST albums got different names then in windows XP!
I get really frustrated from this! how can i make this right!
I want the ZEN to show the albums like in WINDOWS XP! how hard can this be!!!

Hi,
The Creative ZEN organizes songs according to the ID3tag of the music file, not by folders. If you want to arrange the music files in the order you want, please check and make sure that the music files are tagged properly. You may need a third-party tag editor to do this.

Apple TV Does Not Sort Artists The Same As iTunes

I'm having an issue I hope somebody can tell me how to get around. Many CDs I import (and some songs purchased on iTunes) will have a songs on them with a "featured" aritst. So, for instance ... instead of the artist for the particular song being "R.E.M." like the other songs on that album, it is "R.E.M. Feat. Kate Pearson". Then, in iTunes within the 'Artist Box' at above the song list in iTunes, there are two different artists: "R.E.M." and "R.E.M. Feat. Kate Pearson". To fix this in iTunes, I click into the 'Get Info' on the song and change the Album Artist and Sort Artist to "R.E.M." Then, everything is grouped together correctly.
Now, the issue: This fix does not appear to transfer over to AppleTV. It still separates the artists as two separate artists.
Any ideas or thoughts on how to get this to work correctly on AppleTV like it does on iTunes?

Ok, I just figured it out on my end. Steps to follow:
On your Mac or PC:
Get into iTunes:
Where your ATV is right click it and Disconnect (stop streaming)
Your ATV will disappear then go to your Apple TV.
On your Apple TV do the following:
Go to Settings:
Click Computers:
Then where your shared Computer is click on it and Disconnect.
Once this is done, you will still see your computers name or "Connect to" click on that and it will show a 5 digit number. Go to your Computer and type it in when the Apple TV pops up in iTunes. This will totally reset your ATV and you can rename it if you would like. Also choose "Custom" for syncing and then once you hit Apply any purchases you made on your ATV will transfer to your computer right then and their.

Iphone not sorting music correctly.

I can find the song title by searching songs and it has the right artist, but cant find under artist. It is also merging albums with same name too. "Greatest Hits" When I look at the playlist in itunes on my Mac it all looks right and sorts by the artist correctly. Any help?

I'm also having this issue - I'm getting about 27GB of garbage data put into the iPhone's 'other' category

iTunes is set to 'convert larger songs to 128k AAC', and it's trying to sync a 9,500 song library which is a mixture of aiff, wav, mp3, m4p and a couple of m4v.
Previously these all fit on my iPhone a treat. Left iTunes last night after already having transferred around 7000 of them - iTunes informed me i'd have nearly 10GB space remaining. Came back this morning and iTunes shows my phone is now 15GB over capacity. It shows all the library has synced though - no greyed out songs.
When I go to the phone, that says it has 7GB space remaining and only 1700 songs synced. in the music app itself, there's very few songs in there. Looking in Settings>General>Usage, there's no visibility of where that 27GB is being used up. Music category is only 11GB (which should be more like 38GB).
Please help I've wiped and resynced my phone 3 times now, it's driving me mental: I just want to listen to music. I've never had this issue with Android's drag n drop.

ITunes U lectures not sorted

I have a ton of iTunes U content that shows up under the "Music or Podcasts" section of my iTunes library but I can not get it to now show up under the "iTunes U" section. They are not sorting automatically and when I attempt to drag and drop them to the proper area the whole library area lights up, I drop them but they still do not sort.
On a side note, ALL of my Podcasts show up under my "Music" section as well. Basically if I go to "Music" I see EVERYTHING. If I go to "Podcasts" I see Podcasts and iTunes U stuff and if I click on "iTunes U" its empty. I even tried downloading something from iTunes U on my iPhone and syncing and still no go, and ironically enough, the item DOESNT even show in the iTunes U section of my iPhone's iPod.
This has been an issue for a long time (well not the iTunes U part but the rest) and now with iTunes 9 I have the sort issues with iTunes U. What gives? Am I just missing something that will auto sort these items into the appropriate locations?

To get you previously downloaded iTunes U tracks to appear in the new iTunes U section, you need to change the media kind for the tracks. It looks like this was a new field added in this latest release. Select all the iTunes U tracks. Then right click and select "Get Info". On the Options tab you will see a field labeled "Media Kind". Change the value to "iTunes U". The tracks will now show up in the iTunes U section. Should be the same thing for podcasts as well. Just pick the value of "Podcasts".

IPod/Music App in iOS5 not sorting artist list alphabetically

I've got what it seems to be an annoying bug from the new Music App/iPod in iOS5. It simply sorts my artists out of alphabetical order on the artist dashboard. I tried to use the option "group by album artist" on and off and it seems to have no effect on that issue.
I also found a way to fix it temporally, erasing all music data, and resyncing all the playlists/selected albums. But whenever I sync again to add a new album or playlist, it messes up with the alphabetical order again. Anyone with the same problem? Is there a bug fix, workaround?

I have the same problem, I called apple about it. they recommended that I killed the music on the device and then remove the .itl file. after completing those steps to no avail decided to remove the music from the device and then reinstall itunes as this was the next step according to the apple technician. nada. I was replacing my laptop that I sync with anyway so I moved the music to my new pc and re-added all music to itunes. before syncing I /completly/ wiped my device! synced for the first time everything went well. added additional music and viola *Problem Happen*! I know this isnt really that big of an issue but c'mon I thought that updating to 5.01 last night would help but no joy there either! hopfully some of you have better luck than I did, I will be calling apple today I guess. BTW, does anyone know where the indexing for the artist lists happen? is it in itunes or on the device itself. that may help in determining where the problem is actually created.

New iTunes U Downloads not showing up correctly

I happily started trying to use the new iTunes U app today, but I'm getting frustrated.
When I open the app and go into the online catalog, I can select a course lecture to download. When I download it, however, it gets shunted to the iPhone Music app, rather than the shelves of the iTunes U app library. Actually, that's not entirely accurate. When I downloaded the first lecture from the Yale Game Theory course, it appeared in the iTunes U app, but every subsequent download has gone to the Music app alone. I have restarted the phone, deleted and redownloaded the app, and wiped all the previously stored lectures off my device. Nothing seems to work.
Any ideas?

You now download them directly to the iTunes U app. As of iOS 6 (I think) it has become more self contained and doesn't require interaaction with the Music or Video apps.It is also subscription based.

KM sort not sorting items correctly?

I have 20 docs inside a folder displayed in a portal. When these are shown sorted by name they are not shown as I would exspected.
the structure of the docs are:
1 xxxx
2 xxxx
20 xxxx
they are order as follows:
10 xxxx
19 xxxx
1 xxxxx
20 xxxx
2 xxxx
9 xxxxx
This seems strange as I would expect that the ordering would be 1, 2, 3 etc?
Does anyone have any explaination for this??

Hi Jesper,
Do not worry about that, it is a common behaviour across whole software world, for example, check the order of files within your music collection on your computer. You will see the same situation.
You can get around that by changing the single digit names to start with a leading 0:
01 xxx
02 xxx
10 xxx

It's most likely been overwritten by the new backup file.

IPad Video app not sorting correctly

All,
Long time reader, first time poster - but I cannot seem to find a resolution to my issue, I fail to see how this issue could go unresolved for as long as I have had it;
The iPad video App when streaming from a home shared iTunes account does not sort TV shows as per the TV Show / Season / Episode attributes in the metadata. Is there a fix for this other than re-entering the metadata to the Artist attribute - I have a moderately sized library and this would consume my attention for far too long, not to mention its double handling!!!
Surely the introduction of a sort function on iOS devices and Apple TV is not too much to expect.

Actually there is a fix, that I found from another thread. Plug in yor device to the computer as it's faster. Un synch all your music from the iPad, which will remove it from the Pad. When that's done, turn the music synch back on, putting your tunes back on the device.
The music library is corrupted and this will fix that. A regular synch will not work.

Use ProcessMonitor from Microsoft and look in the logs to see if there are any Access Denied errors. Also look in the IIS logs and Event viewer to see if anything there is being logged.
Anti-virus software logs is another place to look....
Pop up blocker in the Browser maybe or possibly adding the new server name to the trusted list.... Domain permissions possibly...
If you browse the App from the Server does that work?

That is about the best way I can phrase my question.
I put year/month/date at the beginning of a show, hoping for them to sort by date and I get mixed results.
Would creating a Folder within the Artists' existing folder that said "Pearl Jam Live", inside the "Pearl Jam" folder in iTunes Media help this "Date Sorting Issue"?

you do not move the masters into a references library - you turn your current library into a referenced library. As Terence Devlin said:
File -> Relocate Masters
What you should set up:
Select a folder, where you want to store your referenced files - probably on an external drive.
Decide on a hierarchical folder structure inside this folder - that is completely up to you.
Select a project from your library and use the command "File -> Relocate Masters/Originals" to move the original image files to the folder where you want to go them to. Only take care not to send two projects to the same folder.
Alternatively, if you do not care about the folder structure Aperture will use, select all images at once from the "Photos" view and let Aperture decide how to assing the folders - in the "Relocate Originals" dialoge you can specify a subfolder format.

Sort artists not quite matching up from itunes to ipod

OK, here's my dilemma. First off, I could not find this in the search field.
I have updated to itunes 11. I'm slowly learning to like it; however I'm having a problem with sorting artists in compilation albums. For example, I have "Atlantic Records: 50 Years". In order to keep the album all together in itunes, I sort it under "A" for Atlantic. itunes 11 shows all of the songs with the artists name underneath (which I love!) When I sync my ipod (1st generation ipod video), and search under Artists, all the individual artists are seperated (still sorted under "A") making it impossible to listen to that album in its entirety - unless of course I access it through "Albums" on my ipod.
Is there a way to sort the album so that it stays together in the "Artist" field under "Atlantic"? I have this issue with classical albums as well . . .

Synced photos from iTunes not sorted correctly

I have around 300 pics that I took with my iphone that I moved to a local folder on PC.
I want to put those pics back on the iphone to use in a timelapse video.
I enabled Photo sync on itunes and chose that folder, and synced.
All synced OK, but these pics are not sorted correctly on the iphone.
The file names on the PC are exactly as iphone assigned them when taken, and according to date taken.
It is very important that they are sorted in ascending file name; any ideas how I can correct the sorting?

For those in this discussion concerned with the "Sort" order, the criteria is in the "metadata" date that changes when you adjust the photos.
The directions below apply to Lightroom
To keep the order you created you must make an adjustment to "ALL" photos at the same time such as increasing the contrast by (1) point.
First select and change the contrast in the first photo in your collection, then select the remaining photos, click "Sync" The "Metatdata" date will change on all photos selected and will then import in the prper order.
I should mention that I have renamed all photos so they have a name that is sequential but I don't know if that matters
